Abstract:
Introducción: El tiburón punta blanca (Triaenodon obesus) es una especie de arrecife de aguas tropicales, no migratoria, que ha demostrado no tener una alta conectividad costera, como la observada para otras especies de tiburón, sin embargo posee la distribución más amplia de todas las demás especies de tiburón de arrecife del Indo-Pacífico. T. obesus, es una de las especies de tiburón más comunes en el Parque Nacional Isla del Coco (PNIC), y no presenta una estacionalidad marcada. En las bahías localizadas en el norte del PNIC, Bahía Chatham y Bahía Wafer, reside una saludable población del tiburón punta blanca de arrecife. A pesar de ser una especie abundante en las bahías Chatham y Wafer del PNIC, la información sobre su residencia resulta escaza. Objetivo: Conocer sobre el uso de hábitat y los movimientos del tiburón punta blanca de arrecife mejorará su manejo en el PNIC y en otros lugares del Pacífico Tropical Oriental. Para esto se realizó un estudio preliminar sobre la residencia en las bahías Chatham y Wafer del PNIC, utilizando telemetría acústica. Métodos: Se realizó una expedición de marcaje de tiburones al Parque Nacional Isla del Coco entre el 25 de noviembre al 5 de diciembre del 2014. Durante esta expedición se realizaron 2 giras nocturnas entre las 18:00 y las 22:00 a Bahía Chatham y Bahía Wafer y se marcaron 8 individuos de T. obesus con telemetría acústica y se instalaron dos receptores, uno en cada bahía. Resultados: Entre noviembre 2014 y diciembre 2015 los tiburones punta blanca marcados fueron detectados por los receptores instalados en las bahías en un total de 278 706 ocasiones. Los tiburones T. obesus marcados permanecieron largos periodos en las bahías Chatham y Wafer, El índice de Residencia (IR) medio de los T. obesus marcados fue de 0.97±0,03, reportando una tendencia en la baja del número total de detecciones durante las horas nocturnas. Los tiburones punta blanca de arrecife mostraron una alta fidelidad al sitio de marcaje, que se ve reflejado en los elevados índices de residencia reportados, particularmente altos en comparación con otras especies de tiburón de arrecife. Las detecciones de los tiburones en las bahías tienden a disminuir a partir de las 18:00 horas, cuando el tiburón punta blanca se vuelve activo para cazar en el arrecife. Conclusiones: En conclusión, los tiburones punta blanca poseen una alta residencia y fidelidad, lo cual confirma su bajo rango de hogar. El Área Marina Protegida de la Isla del Coco probablemente brinda una protección efectiva a la población del tiburón punta blanca de la pesca ilegal.

Las formas de producir, consumir, informar, gestionar y pensar se han modificado y estos cambios han influido en el turismo, el cual debe adaptarse a nuevas demandas. Bahía Blanca constituye un centro urbano intermedio, donde se desarrolla el turismo de Congresos y Convenciones y posee atractivos que son promocionados desde la comuna. Además tiene recursos potenciales que podrían ser incorporados a la oferta turística. Tal es el caso del recurso natural termal que, valorizado como atractivo turístico, podría dar lugar a que la ciudad se posicione como turística. El objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en analizar el recurso potencial termal de Bahía Blanca. Metodológicamente se realizaron encuestas a pobladores y entrevistas a funcionarios, para conocer la mirada turística y la concepción sobre el recurso termal respectivamente. Se espera que existan condiciones favorables para desarrollar la actividad turística termal en la localidad.

Abstract:
Son escasos los trabajos sobre el origen y conservación de estructuras defensivas del siglo XIX en la región Pampeana. En este trabajo se comparan dos estructuras de cavado de la ciudad de Bahía Blanca (Buenos Aires, Argentina): la “Zanja de Rosas” (1833-1834) y la “Zanja de Cerri” (1876). Se realiza un abordaje usando herramientas de la Geoarqueología y la Arqueología Histórica. Se analiza el contexto histórico, los procesos postdepositacionales y su estado actual. Las metodologías desarrolladas permitieron reconocer su origen antrópico y diferenciar los distintos componentes. Los resultados obtenidos reflejan que la construcción estuvo condicionada por las características del sustrato. Por último, se discute su funcionalidad material y simbólica y la lógica subyacente en su construcción.

El autor estudia el impacto que la creación y el funcionamiento del Complejo Petroquímico de Bahía Blanca (Argentina) tuvo sobre su espacio local. Repasa su historia regional, empresarial y económica desde la década de 1970, cuando empezó a planearse su implantación, para continuar con su complicada puesta en marcha, y así posteriormente analizar los distintos procesos de reconversión que se realizaron para llegar a la situación de importante adelanto productivo en que se halla el polo en la actualidad. El autor también expone ciertos presupuestos teóricos que guiaron la investigación sobre los problemas de la economía del espacio. Por último, articula la teoría económica y el análisis histórico buscando establecer hasta qué punto ha avanzado el proceso de desarrollo local de la ciudad de Bahía Blanca en torno al desempeño de ese enorme complejo industrial durante los últimos años.Palabras clave: economía regional, encadenamientos, polo industrial, petroquímica.The Socio-economic Impact of the Petrochemical Complex of Bahía Blanca (Argentina) on its Local Environment Abstract The author studies the impact made by the creation and operation of the Petrochemical Complex of Bahía Blanca (Argentina) on its local environment. He reviews its regional, organizational, and economic history since the seventies, when its establishment started to be considered. He continues with its complicated commissioning. Then, he analyses the different conversion process that were implemented to achieve the important productive progress that the pole currently enjoys. The author also presents some theoretical assumptions that guided the research on space economy problems. Finally, he articulates economic theory to history analysis, with the aim of establishing how far the process of local development of Bahía Blanca has progressed due to the performance of this enormous industrial complex over the past years. Este artículo pretende ofrecer una metodología para planificar los espacios urbanos, a través del reconocimiento de las imágenes percibidas por diferentes actores. El objetivo es comprender el sistema perceptivo de referencia local de los adolescentes de Bahía Blanca, a partir de sus prácticas socioespaciales y de sus vínculos con familiares y amigos, como medios para definir y categorizar los lugares de mayor concurrencia habitual que, por su significado emocional, se convierten en geosímbolos de referencia colectiva. El método utilizado se fundamenta en datos cuali-cuantitativos para elaborar cartografía de abstracción subjetiva, que posteriormente será utilizada para orientar la intervención urbana bajo conceptos de estética y funcionalidad. Se espera contribuir al reconocimiento de los sectores que más agradan a los jóvenes en aras de la redefinición del diseño de las zonas urbanas de Bahía Blanca.

Abstract:
El cuidado de los menores considerados en riesgo moral y material en la Argentina de principios del siglo XX queda muchas veces a cargo de instituciones de caridad en las cuales las benefactoras adquieren especial protagonismo. El objetivo del presente artículo es identificar las funciones asumidas por las mujeres en el periodo de surgimiento y afianzamiento del Patronato de la Infancia de Bahía Blanca, caracterizándolas en el marco de las relaciones que establecen con las personas que las rodean, así como de las representaciones de género emergentes de las mismas. Cabe preguntarse de qué manera se definen, a partir de las prácticas y los discursos vinculados con el caso analizado, los lugares ocupados por las benefactoras en relación a los hombres de su círculo social y a otras mujeres de distintos estratos y ocupaciones que se involucran con la institución, como las amas de leche y las religiosas. Se plantea que la actuación de las propulsoras de este emprendimiento representa en muchos sentidos una transgresión a los modelos imperantes de femineidad pero que, sin embargo, tanto los discursos de los hombres como los de las mujeres asocian sus actividades con esos presupuestos dominantes. Benefactor Women in Southwestern Buenos Aires: the Case of Child Board of Bahía Blanca, 1906-1931AbstractThe care of minors considered to be in moral and material hazard in Argentina in early XXth century is often left in charge of charity institutions, in which benefactor women obtain a special leading role. The aim of this paper is to identify the duties assumed by women in emergence and growth period of Bahia Blanca’s Child Board, portraying them in the framework of the relationships they establish with people close to them, and in the gender representation that emerge from those relationships. Based on experiences and speeches related to the mentioned case, it is worth considering how the places held by benefactor women are defined regarding men from their social circle, and other women from different occupations and social strata, who get involved with the institution such as wet nurses and nuns. In this paper, it is explained that the performance of promoters of these entrepreneurship represents -in many ways- a transgression of prevailing models of femininity. Nevertheless, this performance is associated by both women and men with their activities with those dominant assumptions. Keywords: women, charity, Child Board, Bahia Blanca.

Los últimos estudios sobre los hallazgos y observaciones que Darwin hiciera durante su viaje a bordo del Beagle señalan al área de Bahía Blanca, en el sudoeste de la región pampeana como una de las escalas más inspiradoras para la elaboración de su teoría de la evolución. Los sitios de Punta Alta y Monte Hermoso con sus restos fósiles de mamíferos cenozoicos fueron una de las mayores motivaciones del joven naturalista. Las exploraciones paleontológicas junto a las observaciones que realizara sobre la fauna y la flora de la región constituyen la evidencia de que esta zona fue un componente crucial para su pensamiento transmutacional aunque los historiadores lo hayan pasado por alto o minimizado.

Dentro de la dinámica de la globalización, se asiste a un proceso contradictorio de homogeneización de pautas culturales, formas de consumo y comportamientos de ocio; a la vez que se exacerban las individualidades, debilitándose los vínculos que articulan identidades. En la sociedad actual el consumo de actividades de ocio simboliza posición social y distinción, es decir, constituye un factor de identificación social. El presente trabajo se enmarca desde la perspectiva espacial del análisis del ocio y tiene como área de estudio a la localidad de Bahía Blanca, ciudad intermedia ubicada en la región del Sudoeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. El objetivo principal de la investigación es analizar la importancia que los espacios de ocio de la ciudad tienen como lugares de identificación para la población, teniendo en cuenta la relevancia que las actividades de ocio adquieren en la actualidad. Se define un tipo de investigación descriptiva y exploratoria: se realiza una revisión y selección bibliográfica y se utiliza la encuesta a residentes como herramienta exploratoria. Los resultados obtenidos permiten determinar como primera aproximación, que la ciudad de Bahía Blanca no es ajena a los procesos urbanos contradictorios resultados de la adaptación de las ciudades a los cambios económicos y culturales globales.Palabras claves: Ocio; Consumo; Espacio; Identificación Social.THE VALUATION OF LEISURE AS A FACTOR OF SOCIAL IDENTIFICATION. ANALYSIS FROM A SPACE PERSPECTIVE IN THE CITY OF BAHÍA BLANCA (ARGENTINA)ABSTRACTWithin the dynamics of globalization, there is a contradictory process of homogenization of cultural patterns, ways to consumption and leisure behaviors; while at the same time exacerbating individualities, weakening the links that articulate identities. In today's society the consumption of leisure activities symbolizes social position and distinction, that is, it constitutes a factor of social identification. The present work is framed from the spatial perspective of the leisure analysis and its study area is the town of Bahía Blanca, an intermediate city located in the Southwest region of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The main objective of the research is to analyze the importance that the leisure spaces of the city have as places of identification for the population, taking into account the relevance that leisure activities acquire at present. For the proposed research, is defined a descriptive and exploratory type of research. A review and selection of bibliography is made and the survey of resident is used as an exploratory tool. The results obtained allow us to determine as a first approximation that the city of Bahia Blanca is not alien to the contradictory urban processes results of the adaptation of cities to global economic and cultural changes.Keywords: Leisure; Consumption; Space; Social Identification.A VALORIZAÇÃO DO LAZER COMO FATOR DE IDENTIFICAÇÃO SOCIAL. Na sociedade de hoje o consumo de lazer simboliza status social e distinção, ou seja, um fator de identificação social. Este trabalho situou-se na perspectiva da análise espacial do lazer e a sua área de estudo foi a cidade de Bahía Blanca, cidade média localizada na região sudoeste da província de Buenos Aires, Argentina. O principal objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a importância que os espaços de lazer da cidade têm como lugares de identificação social para a população, considerando a importância que as atividades de lazer adquirem hoje. Definiu-se como metodologia o tipo de pesquisa descritiva e exploratória: realizou-se a revisão e seleção da literatura bibliográfica sobre o tema e usou-se como ferramenta exploratória a entrevista com residentes. Os resultados permitem determinar, como uma primeira aproximação, que a cidade de Bahía Blanca não está alheia aos processos urbanos contraditórios, resultados da adaptação das cidades às mudanças económicas e culturais globais.Palavras-chave: Lazer; Consumo; Espaço; Identificação Social.

Abstract:
The Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) has a morphological configuration resulting from hydrological and sedimentary processes related to Late Quaternary sea level changes. This estuarine system occupies a large coastal plain with a dense net of tidal channels, low-altitude islands and large intertidal flats. Little is known about the sedimentary units of the marine subbottom. Therefore, a stratigraphical analysis of the northern coast of Bahía Blanca estuary was carried out using high resolution seismic (3.5 kHz) in order to: i) define Quaternary sequences, ii) describe sedimentary structures, and iii) determine the paleoenvironmental conditions of sedimentation. The seismic stratigraphic data collected and their correlation with drilling lithological data show five seismic sequences (S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5), of which S1-S2 were found to be associated with a continental paleoenvironment of Miocene-Pleistocene age. Sequences S3 and S4, whose lithology and seismic facies (paleochannel structures and prograding reflection configurations), were defined on these materials, to evidence the development of an ancient deltaic environment which was part of a large Pleistocene drainage system. The S5 sequence was formed during the Holocene transgressive-regressive process and complete the seismostratigraphic column defined in the present study.

De acuerdo con dichos registros oficiales,en la ciudad existen 32 villas y asenta-mientos precarios. Estos aglutinan a un total de más de ocho mil familias, repre-sentando alrededor de un 10% de la población total de la ciudad. Documentamos un grave déficit en materia de políticas públicas que atienden os problemas de integración sociourbana de una parte signifiativa de la población de la ciudad. En tal sentido, proponemos un esquema para organizar la evaluación de la política pública existente y discutir nuevas intervenciones.

Por ello, en la historia urbana y urbanística de Bahía Blanca la sensación de un desarrollo incompleto contrasta con grandes aspiraciones inalcanzadas. El objetivo del artículo es comparar imaginarios y realidades en torno a los predios ferroviarios desafectados, analizando documentos de la prensa y de los planes urbanos. Dicha tarea ha sido concebida en referencia a la historia del urbanismo en la Argentina y a sus paradigmas disciplinares.</p>

ABSTRACT Chitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers in the planet. Chitin was quantified in seston fractions in order to obtain the first characterization of this polymer in the Bahía Blanca Estuary. Sampling was conducted at two sites: a non- impacted tidal channel -Bahía del Medio (BM)- and a sewage discharge sector -Canal Vieja (CV)-, during winter and summer. The highest values of chitin were observed in the seston fraction <20 µm (6.1 mg L-1 in BM in summer). The remaining larger fractions (20-60, 60-200, 200-500 and >500 µm) did not exceed ~1% of total chitin.. The higher concentration of chitin in seston <20 µm suggests that this fraction is a large reservoir of this biopolymer contributing to organic matter for microorganisms in the food web of the Bahía Blanca Estuary. This study is also the first report on the possible sources of chitin in Argentina marine ecosystems.

This paper aims to examine the determinants of smart-city commitment across individuals from Bahía Blanca, Argentina. Literature has identified different factors explaining citizens’ commitment to smart cities, such as education, age, labor condition, and other more subjective factors, such as trust and awareness about the smart-city concept. A mediator factor of smart commitment is e-readiness or digital readiness, that is, the level of preparedness to properly exploit internet opportunities such as e-government and e-commerce. To achieve this goal, we used a survey conducted on 97 citizens (followers of the Moderniza Bahía Facebook) from the city of Bahía Blanca, Argentina. By estimating a structural equation model, we found that higher levels of ICT use are associated with higher levels of smart-city commitment and that higher awareness of the smart-city concept is related to higher levels of smart-city commitment. Sociodemographic factors such as age and labor condition also explain ICT use.

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo es estimar el período de incubación y el intervalo serial de Covid-19 en una muestra de pacientes sintomáticos en la ciudad de Bahía Blanca durante marzo-mayo de 2020. Se registraron fechas de aparición de síntomas de casos primarios y secundarios y para los primeros 18 casos de transmisión local de SARS-Cov2 en Bahía Blanca (Argentina). La duración de la aparición de síntomas fue estimada suponiendo una distribución log normal. Para el intervalo serial se supuso una distribución gamma. Los parámetros fueron estimados por máxima verosimilitud. Del total de 18 casos de transmisión local analizados, 17% ocurrió en fase presintomática y asintomática. El período de incubación promedio es de 7.9 días (95% IC 4.6, 11.1) y de 7.5 días (95% IC 4.1, 10.9) si se toman los casos con mayor certidumbre sobre infectores y fechas de exposición. La mediana es 6.1 y 5.8 días respectivamente. La estimación puntual del intervalo serial es 6.8 días (95% IC: 4.0-9.6) y 5.5 días (95% IC: 2.8, 8.1) considerando solo los pares más fiables. La mediana del intervalo serial se ubica en 5.2 y 4.1 días respectivamente. La incubación y el intervalo serial podrían ser algo más largos en Bahía Blanca que en otras ciudades. La transmisión de asintomáticos y de pre-sintomáticos no es despreciable.

In this study we investigate for the first time the zooplankton assemblages in a relatively small tidal channel called Bahía del Medio, situated in the middle-outer area of the Bahía Blanca Estuary, South of the Main channel. We focused the study on micro- and mesozooplankton assemblages with emphasis on tintinnids, copepods and meroplankton along the annual cycle 1997-1998. Fifteen species of tintinnids belonging to 6 genera were observed in the study area, the mean total tintinnid abundance fluctuating between 3.4 x 10(6) ind. m-3 and 5.1 x 10(6) ind m-3. The mesozooplankton comprised 11 taxa, total abundance fluctuating between 449 ind m-3 in March 1997 and only 1 ind m-3 in October 1997. The channel proved to be spatially homogeneous in its physical and biochemical features. Micro- and mesozooplankton abundance displayed a high degree of spatial homogeneity, though the seasonal variation in both environment and zooplankton was significant. Comparison with the zooplankton observed at a station in the Main channel of the estuary showed differences in number of taxa represented, a general lower abundance of both assemblages and the presence of some rare species, a fact which is discussed.

The land around Bahía Blanca, Argentina, has been farmed intensively for six decades. We report the concentrations of a number of organochlorine pesticides (DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor epoxide and lindane), and of DDT metabolites (DDD + DDE) in three different layers (0–5, 5–10 and 10–20 cm) of the soils in 44 fields of eight farms that have been devoted to horticulture for periods ranging from 15 to 60 yr. In spite of the horticultural use of these substances having been banned for the past 13–35 yr, high concentrations were found – up to nearly 12 mg kg-1 for DDT + DDD + DDE, 17 mg kg-1 for dieldrin, 4 mg kg-1 for endrin, 7 mg kg-1 for heptachlor epoxide and 0.8 mg kg-1 for lindane. The highest concentrations of DDT, dieldrin, endrin and heptachlor epoxide were found on the oldest farms, the highest levels of DDD + DDE on middle-aged farms (35–40 yr), and the hi ghest levels of lindane on 15–40-year-old farms that had rather lower soil pH than the older farms. Concentrations invariably decreased slightly with increasing depth, and for DDT, dieldrin and heptachlor epoxide they exhibited significant positive correlation with soil organic matter content. Principal components analysis confirmed the distinguishability of three groups of analytes: one comprising DDT, dieldrin, endrin and heptachlor epoxide associated with higher soil organic matter and clay contents; and two singletons, DDD + DDE associated with higher pH and lindane. We conclude that these pesticides have very limited mobility in these semiarid alkaline soils. Key words: Organochlorine, semiarid soils, horticulture, depth variation.

Objetivo: Describir los tipos de errores que referencian los conductores de automóviles que circularon en la ciudad de Bahía Blanca durante el período septiembre 2014 y abril de 2015. Método: Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal de tipo cuantitativo. Se definió una muestra por conveniencia y se confeccionó una encuesta en formato digital, de tipo estructurada, dirigida a los automovilistas, teniendo como base el “Driver Behaviour Questionnaire” en la versión traducida al español. Luego fue validada mediante el método Delphi. Se analizó con software estadístico SPSS. Resultados: El 30% al realizar un giro, estuvo a punto de chocar con una bicicleta o moto. Un 36,3% sostuvo que por ir distraído, se dio cuenta tarde de que el vehículo de adelante redujo su velocidad debiendo frenar bruscamente para evitar el choque, el 25,3% se olvida de utilizar el guiñe antes de girar o cambiar de carril. El 80,2% usa siempre el cinturón de seguridad. El 11,4% pasa los semáforos en rojo. Un 43,9% utiliza el celular mientras maneja y el 22,9% de los encuestados reconoce que alguna vez condujo por encima del límite legal de alcohol. El 38% se impacienta y acelera bruscamente a la salida de un semáforo y un 62,7% se impacienta y se adelanta de forma arriesgada a un vehículo lento. Conclusiones: El manejo es una situación compleja que requiere de múltiples habilidades pero fundamentalmente una conciencia de respeto y solidaridad sumado a un enfático control punitorio sobre errores voluntarios graves.

We investigated the occurrence and seasonal variation of the biomass of rotifers, tintinnids, the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Gyrodinium fusus and copepod nauplii in the Bahía Blanca Estuary (38°42′S61°50 ′W), Argentina, during an annual cycle. The rotifers fauna comprised three species, while the tintinnids were represented by sixteen species. The biomass of the rotifers fluctuated between 0.62 and 8.90 µgC l−1. The biomass of the tintinnids fluctuated between 0.13 and 9.37 µgC l−1, the biomass of the nauplii stages between 1.78 and 7.65 µgC l−1; while the biomass of G. fusus varied from 0.26 and 7.94 µgC l−1, these results are compared to estimates of microzooplankton in other regions. We analysed the presence of the different groups in relation to the environmental variables, based on point-biserial correlation. Salinity fluctuated between 25.14 and 36.64; temperature between 7.5 and 23.2°C, solar radiation between 0.9 and 30.8 MJ m−2d−1 and Secchi distance between 0.25 and 1.43 m. Rotifers were correlated positively with temperature, chlorophyll-a and Secchi depth and negatively with salinity. The tintinnids were positively correlated with salinity. Gyrodinium fusus was positively correlated with Secchi depth, and chlorophyll-a, and negatively with temperature and solar radiation. Nauplii stages were negatively correlated with chlorophyll-a. Based on the occurrence of the microzooplankters in relation to the physico-chemical variables, it was possible to establish two seasonal assemblages: (a) the co-occurrence of the rotifers and the heterotrophic dinoflagellate G. fusus during the winter–spring; and (b) the tintinnids and nauplii larvae during the summer. We conclude that, in this estuary, physico-chemical variables are the forcing factors that directly, or indirectly, influence the seasonal assemblages of the microzooplankton.

AbstractThis study was conducted in two populations of crabs, Cyrtograpsus angulatus and Neohelice granulata from the Bahía Blanca Estuary, in Argentina, to identify risk factors for infection by the acanthocephalan Profilicollis chasmagnathi and to assess the association between infection and mortality of these hosts. Cyrtograpsus angulatus and N. granulata crabs were sampled seasonally over the course of a year, and spring sampling included collection of dead crabs predated by Olrog's gulls in a nearby breeding colony. Potential risk factors for infection were assessed and the number of cystacanth larvae per crab was counted. In C. angulatus, the odds of infection increased by 7% for each millimetre increase in carapace length, and were nearly 17 times greater in crabs sampled from the Olrog's gull feeding area compared with those sampled from nests in the breeding colony. For every millimetre increase in carapace length in N. granulata, the odds of infection increased by 13% in crabs from the breeding colony, and by 32% in crabs from the feeding area. Mean intensity of infection in N. granulata increased by 16.5% for each additional millimetre of carapace width. The level of parasite aggregation was lowest in the largest C. angulatus and highest in N. granulata predated by Olrog's gull. The results show that host size is the most important factor influencing infection prevalence in both crab species and intensity of infection in N. granulata, and suggest the presence of parasite-induced mortality in the populations studied.
