This chapter aims to measure the relationship between the number of women in the board of directors and company performance in the listed companies in Bahrain Bourse. The study uses panel data where the data is collected from the investor's guide in Bahrain Bourse and the annual reports from the listed companies from 2013 to 2017. The sample of the study includes 39 listed companies; the independent variable is the number of women in the board of directors in each company, which was measured using dummy variables; and the dependent variable is the company performance, which was measured using two measurement models driven from previous studies: accounting measurement (return on assets) and market measurement (Tobin's Q). The study also utilizes three control variables in order to help measuring the relationship between the number of women in the board of directors and company performance. The study concludes that there is a positive correlation between the number of women in the board of directors and the company's ROA and Tobin's Q.

This chapter investigates the relationship between the audit committee and earnings quality of listed companies in Bahrain Bourse and to examine whether those companies comply with the obligatory code of corporate governance. The sample of this study includes 40 companies listed in Bahrain Bourse for the period 2013-2017. The model of the study tested the relationship between the independent variables of audit committee characteristics and the dependent variable of earnings quality using pooled data regression. The findings of the study showed that the Bahraini listed companies comply and follow the code of corporate governance and some audit committee characteristics have an impact on earnings quality.

One of the biggest challenges for managers today is decision making. The adoption of technological solutions to obtain information more easily and intuitively is increasing, so decisions are taken with greater coherence. In this aspect, Business Intelligence (BI) appears as a tool that extracts, transforms, and enables data to be crossed to assist managers in making decisions. This chapter proposes a BI maturity assessment model to assess the level of this phenomenon in the management of the Information Technology (IT) area to verify the main reasons why the IT managers of a company from the private sector in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, do not use BI tools in their management practices whereas their clients implemented such processes in the last two years. As a result, the level of maturity reached was 01, denominated empirical management or without maturity.

Project management is a complex undertaking with many stages and processes. It should follow the full business life cycle from definition and justification of the project through to delivering demonstrable benefits for the company. Nowadays, more and more organizations adjust their organizational culture towards project orientation. There is a big challenge, for each organization, to continually improve its project management processes to increase quality of outputs and satisfaction of customers. Measuring project management implementation maturity can assist in this effort by providing a valuable framework for performance improvement. The construction and engineering industry in Bahrain has witnessed many technological advances recently that require competent project management.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the separation and independence of the AHRB from the HEFCE. In 2001, through the aid of Bahram Bekhradnia, the AHRB gained autonomy from the HEFCE. At the beginning of the fiscal year in April 2001, the ARHB became a company limited by guarantee. In September of the same year, the organisation gained legal status as a charity, hence affording it certain tax advantages. The newly independent company and charity took on new trustees, however it retained its broad responsibilities. It also took on the responsibility for producing its own audited Statutory Accounts. At the same time, the organisation's staff formally transferred to the employment of the ARHB and in the following year additional staff were recruited. In the month of October, the organisation signed a ten-year lease contract on its new office in Whitefriars Building in Bristol. In addition, the organisation was also attaining full realization of its programmes and objectives. It formed three award schemes including the Research Leave scheme. It also created the Fellowships in the Creative and Performing Arts. In addition, the organisation also formed new funding schemes and in 2002, upon the approval of the government, the Research Council funded projects throughout the UK. In sum, as Chief Executive David Eastwood puts it, the ARHB was achieving independence and operating in ways which still mirrored those of the research councils.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates the findings of this work with three case studies. It demonstrates how the understanding of extraterritoriality developed and defended here differs from and improves upon previous accounts. The chapter analyses bilateral cooperation in higher education between Ireland and Bahrain, the implications of a Special Economic Zone, run by Chinese shareholders in Nigeria, and export subsidies for sugar produced in the EU. The case studies cover a range of issues that implicate civil and political, as well as economic and social rights. In each of these case studies, I compare my account of jurisdiction as political power with previous accounts of jurisdiction and extraterritoriality in general. In detailing the disagreements, I show that the present approach is more successful than others in explaining extraterritorial human rights obligations of states. It allows us to assess very different scenarios according to the same principle: jurisdiction is required, and it is based on political power and the application of rules because this is what integrity and equality make it. The case studies show the present theory’s potential to supply plausible guidance in a principled manner, and across a very wide spectrum of cases.

Abstract:
Poor integration of pedagogical and technological learning elements within teaching and learning methodologies may have substantial impacts on the effectiveness of learning. Although educational institutions are improving their courses, teaching and learning methodologies and assessment strategies with tailored approaches, their efforts at improvement tend to focus narrowly on academic results. The authors believe that educational courses should give priority to educational goals and labour market expectations (industrial companies’ requirements) in devising the methodology of teaching and learning. The technology based learning system has a capability to comply with diverse requirements as mentioned. The purpose of this paper is to develop an extended information quality framework to measure the effectiveness of e-learning content for technology based learning system for engineering education courses (EECs) in Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) in Bahrain. The model incorporates the requirements of educational goals (TVE goals) and modern industrial needs and integrates these with existing information quality frameworks. The extended model incorporates pedagogical and technological elements, is consistent with the educational objectives and industrial requirements, and can be used as guidelines for measuring the effectiveness of e-learning packages delivered in EECs.

Sitting atop a rickety Indian bus trundling up the Beas Valley to the delightful hill station of Manali in the Kulu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, peering between swaying bodies and piles of luggage, I caught my first glimpse of the snowy peaks of the Himalaya. Yes, those white streaks way up in the sky were not, after all, clouds: they were glints of sunlight on impossibly high and steep ice-fields plastered onto the sides of mountains that tore up into the sky. It was a sight to take one’s breath away and I knew instantly that this was going to be the start of a great adventure. We were a typical shoestring British student expedition of five friends who could fit easily into two overloaded rickshaws, heading for the mountains around the Tos Glacier. Mountaineers dream about climbing in the Himalaya. Since my earliest days of climbing the hills and crags of Snowdonia and northern Scotland, I had yearned to see and climb those magical Himalayan Mountains. Now here I was, and the reality of the Himalaya was even better than I imagined. I had taken three months off from my PhD studies on the geology of the Oman Mountains to go on this expedition. We had driven a Land Rover out from England to Muscat through a snowy Europe and across the Empty Quarter of Arabia from Syria and Jordan to the United Arab Emirates and Oman. After three months’ fieldwork in Oman I caught a passenger ship, the MV Dwarka, last of the British East India Company merchant vessels that plied the Gulf route from Basra via Kuwait, Bahrain, Dubai, and Muscat to Karachi, and then travelled through Pakistan by train into India. That first expedition to Kulu was a revelation. We camped on the Tos Glacier, four days’ walk above the village of Manikarin in the Parbati Valley of eastern Kulu, for about four weeks. During that time the weather was perfect almost every day.
