Within the history of concepts, the conceptualization of time is central. Historical actors rely on their experiences for orientation in the present, and they produce expectations about the future. To imagine their horizons of expectation they need concepts about the future. When the future becomes difficult to conceive of for a variety of reasons, they take refuge in concepts describing unruly and uncertain times such as crisis or chaos. Abstract:
CHO1 is a kinesin-like motor protein essential for cytokinesis in mammalian cells. To analyze how CHO1 functions, we established RNAi and genetic rescue assays. CHO1-depleted cells reached a late stage of cytokinesis but fused back to form binucleate cells because of the absence of the midbody matrix in the middle of the intercellular bridge. Expression of exogenous CHO1 restored the formation of the midbody matrix and rescued cytokinesis in siRNA-treated cells. By analyzing phenotypes rescued with different constructs, it was shown that both motor and stalk domains function in midbody formati

Abstract: In his final novel, Back to Blood , Tom Wolfe delivers a warning and an antidote. The warning concerns the widespread disbelief in God and the renunciation of values. In this vacuum flows nihilism, hedonism, and zero-sum power dynamics. Wolfe dramatizes this sociological prognosis in Back to Blood , where his hero, Nestor Camacho, becomes the sole light bearer of traditional morality, namely chivalry. After obtaining a definition of chivalry using historical sources and modern scholars, this paper will show how Tom Wolfe in Back to Blood resurrects the chivalric ideal and endorses it

Abstract: Previous scholars have noted George Saunders’s interest in critiquing American consumerist mentality and satirizing corporate ethics. A smaller number have studied Saunders’s interest in the human experience as defined through a spiritual quest. The material and spiritual collide in this essay, which studies Saunders’s use of the Semplica Girls, in “The Semplica Girl Diaries,” to embody an intersection between our human limitations and our responses to those limitations through material, aesthetic, and spiritual avenues.

For assessment of the effect of diet cycling on body weight gain patterns, 3-mo-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were either cycled from chow to a high-energy condensed milk (CM) diet, back to chow, and then back to CM diet at 3-mo intervals (cyclers) or were fed chow to 9 mo of age and then CM diet for 3 mo (noncyclers). Nine of 21 cyclers developed diet-induced obesity (DIO), gaining 36, 59, and 281% more weight than chow-fed controls (CF) at each cycle, respectively. Twelve cycled rats were diet-resistant (DR) with comparable weight gain to CF rats after the first CM diet and chow cycles. Howev

Abstract: Denise Levertov valorized the imagination as the perceptive faculty whereby it is possible for us to see God. Recent studies in neuroscience back up the insight—shared with Hans Urs von Balthasar and Rowan Williams—that engaging with poetry provides a defamiliarizing experience with language that engages the whole person, not just the mind. Here I read Levertov's poem "The Jacob's Ladder" as an argument for and a demonstration of how poetry provides the reader with a unique avenue for spiritual transformation.

Abstract Overexpression of Bcl-2/Bcl-XL protein has been observed in more than 80% of B-cell lymphomas. Diffuse large cell lymphoma (DLCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. (−)-Gossypol, a natural product isolated from cottonseeds, was discovered as a potent small-molecule inhibitor of Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL proteins, with a Ki value in the nanomole per liter range for both. In vitro, (−)-gossypol showed significant growth inhibition effect against WSU-DLCL2 lymphoma cell line and fresh cells obtained from a lymphoma patient with no effect on normal peripheral blood lymphocytes.

Abstract:
γ-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (γ-MSH) is an endogenous agonist of the melanocortin 3-receptor (MC3R). Genetic disruption of MC3Rs increases adiposity and blunts responses to fasting, suggesting that increased MC3R signaling could be physiologically beneficial in the long term. Interestingly, several studies have concluded that activation of MC3Rs is orexigenic in the short term. Therefore, we aimed to examine the short- and long-term effects of γ-MSH in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) on energy homeostasis and hypothesized that the effect of MC3R agonism is dependent on the state of

Abstract While the resistivity method offers clear advantages for detecting underground defects beneath urban roads, the complex surface conditions of these roads preclude the deployment of regular arrays. This complexity significantly challenges conventional resistivity detection methods for underground defects. This study designed a high-density resistivity detection observation system adaptable to the deployment of irregular arrays along urban roads. This method obtains high-dimensional apparent resistivity data and employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for its dimensionality reduction

Methods Thirty-seven eyes with cataracts and crystalline lens dislocations underwent cataract surgery. An L-shaped chop hook was introduced into the anterior chamber, and the tip was pushed or pulled to the centre of the anterior capsular edge of the zonular dialysis during the cataract operation. Postoperative follow-up was conducted for ≥ 1 month. Results All patients’ postoperative visual abilities improved except one patient with glaucoma. One patient
