Duda, Romain. "Ethnoecology of hunting in an empty forest. Practices, local perceptions and social change among the Baka (Cameroon)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/457587.
Full textAs other tropical forest areas, Central Africa shelters both a high biodiversity and many local communities who depend on it for their subsistence. However, conservation policies enforced in such contexts rarely succeed to conceal human development and ecosystem sustainability. Conservationists consider subsistence hunting as a major hurdle to wildlife conservation, but for local populations hunting is deeply embedded in cultural identity, diet, economy, and social and symbolic practices. In this context, this thesis examines the tensions between subsistence hunting and defaunation. Defaunation of Central African forests is driven by a multiplicity of factors including the complex entanglement of wildlife in a wide range of apparently incompatible values and priorities. Beyond Western concerns regarding ecosystems sustainability and the intrinsic value of animal species, defaunation also generates concerns related to food security, public health (epizootics), indigenous rights, and even national security (in relation to ivory trafficking). Despite these tensions, the understanding of the human and social dimensions of the “bushmeat crisis” remains underexplored. This thesis explores the socio-cultural aspects of hunting and wildlife crisis through data collected during 14 months of fieldwork in two Baka villages of southeaster Cameroon. The Baka live in a context polarized by conservation measures on one side and economic incentives for bushmeat trade on the other. This thesis provides a broad view of how the Baka society reacts to a fast changing context where fauna has become a major stake. To do so, I analyse the way Baka hunt, consume, and commercialize wild meat, but also how they interpret environmental changes and their potential impacts on social structure and wellbeing. Through the different chapters of the thesis, I using an ethnoecological approach and combine data collected through qualitative and quantitative methods. Specifically, I used systematic surveys to collect data on informants’ (n=269) socio-economic characteristics, hunting outputs, hunting knowledge, status, and meat consumption. These data are associated with information from semi-structured interviews and from insights generated during long periods of participant observation. For the Baka, the acquisition and sharing of wild meat remains a critical symbolic and social practice, although the context of hunting seems to have changed to what was previously described. Nowadays, the Baka hunt and consume mostly small mammals, notably rodents, in a landscape seemingly depleted due to past over hunting. Hunting is not equally practiced by all the Baka: while most Baka have relatively low hunting outputs, some others –pushed by economic incentives and the unregulated presence of shotguns in the area- seem to be largely involved in bushmeat trade. Variations in hunting practices relate to variations in hunting knowledge and skills, which in turn are reflected on different social status. Previous patterns of status attribution to hunters are, however, being altered arguably because of the decrease in bushmeat sharing, notably by elephant hunting specialists. Finally this thesis shed light upon Baka perceptions on wildlife changes and conservation measures, a process that is mostly negatively perceived by the Baka, who express feelings of marginalisation and fear due to the use of force and abuses from conservation agents. This thesis is the first to provide a deep analysis of hunting in the current context of Baka populations. It highlights intracultural variations on social aspects related to hunting, such as diet, status, income, and social perceptions. At the applied level, this work suggests that current conservation policies critically need a full understanding of local people’s cosmovisions, reactions to changes, and the consequences of both defaunation and imposed conservation measures on their social, economic and cultural frameworks.
Nguede, Ngono Jean-Pierre. Paris, EHESS, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EHES0707.
Full textThis thesis proposes a thorough analysis of the resilience of socio-environmental in two communities of hunter / gatherers, Baka and Bakola Cameroon. These communities formerly nomadic lived in the forest where they drew most of their life and survival. Today they have been displaced from their ancestral lands for the sake of creating protected areas, agro-industrial, forestry and execution of major mining projects, these communities are more than ever in touch Standing with "big black" or Bantu largely influence their lifestyle (hunting, gathering and fishing) and often determine their future. To cope with these changes, the government of Cameroon and national and international organizations through extensive programs accompany gradually Baka and Bakola to rebuild a new life that incorporates the requirements of "modernity. " Despite this support, these people are still under the influence of scourges such as alcoholism, disease, malnutrition, marginalization, in schooling, non-recognition of their rights, etc. . How do they cope with the changes occurring in their lives? The thesis aims to identify the different mutations, to describe and analyze the strategies established by the Baka and Bakola to adapt. Some mutations may appear on the surface without question a fundamental attachment to the forest and some ancestral values. However, different exogenous pressures (such as settlement, globalization) and endogenous (such as attitude of individuals, transmission) which determine the degree of progress of the various mutations should not be underestimated, as they are a threat to development. The concept of relience proves operative to evaluate the adequacy of policies accompanying minorities by the actors of development and a tool to understand the adaptability of these societies in rapid transition

Full textThis thesis proposes a detailed analysis on the dynamic of change observed among the Baka from Gabon, a hunter-gatherer community. This group is composed of less than 1000 individuals speaking an Ubangian language inside a Bantu environment. By comparing their language with others from the same linguistic sub-group, some singularities from Baka and some resemblance with the Monzombo sub-group can be seen. These two ethnolinguistic groups, Baka and Monzombo groups, seem to have kept close contact based on skill exchanges (hunting/gathering and fishing/iron skills). This interaction is witnessed in the exchanges the Baka population preserves with their current Bantu neighbors, especially with Fang in Gabon.Nowadays, the Baka way of life is still characterized by their mobility and the forest. Nevertheless, due to a non-migratory lifestyle imposed by the State, the proximity with the Fang group and the growing globalization, dramatic changes are inflicted to the Baka community. Changes at which they are trying to adapt. These constraints do not affect only their language (system and use) but also many sociocultural habits such as settlement, mobility, food and means of support or religion. The aim of this thesis is to identify these ongoing transformations, to describe and to evaluate their impact bearing in mind the singularity of many contexts. An argumentative reflection on categorization principles is also proposed on lexical domains such as fauna, flora and diseases. Certain changes could arise without necessarily questioning their bonds to the forest and ancestral values. Nonetheless, both exogenous (globalization and a sedentary life) and endogenous pressures (individual behavior and culture transmission) determining the progress of different transformations should not be under evaluated as being a threat to the language, to the knowledge of the flora and fauna and to certain sociocultural practices
Gallois, Sandrine. "Dynamics of Local Ecological Knowledge A case study among the Baka children from southeastern Cameroon." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/382477.
Full textThis PhD thesis analyzes the processes of local ecological knowledge acquisition among children (between 5 and 16 years-old) of a hunter-gatherer society under rapid social-ecological changes: the Baka from southeastern Cameroon. I pay particular attention to the context in which knowledge acquisition occurs and how such context is nowadays being transformed. In its five empirical chapters, this thesis investigates: a) the local ecological knowledge held by Baka children; b) the context in which children acquire local ecological knowledge (i.e., their involvement in daily activities); c) children’s social organization during subsistence activities; d) the relation between parental livelihood strategies and children's daily activities; and e) adult's and children's perceptions of their daily activities and livelihood. The results of this dissertation show that children's local ecological knowledge varies according to child’s sex and the age, and that children’s hold specific knowledge, i.e. different than adult's knowledge. My findings also show that Baka children frequently engage in subsistence activities, underlying the central place of such activities for the acquisition of local ecological knowledge during childhood. I also found that children's engagement in daily activities vary according to the child’s sex from an early age and that the choice of activities changes with age, with increasing involvement in newly introduced activities (i.e., listening to modern music and playing soccer) as children grow up. Moreover, my results also provide evidence of the presence of multiple patterns of social organization among Baka children during their subsistence activities, highlighting a high diversity of pathways for the acquisition of local ecological knowledge during childhood. Additionally, findings from this work illustrate how the livelihood strategies adopted by Baka parents, a proxy for social changes, are not related to children’s involvement in daily activities, suggesting that social changes might be best assessed at the community level. Finally, I also found that individual's expectations towards adult's livelihood differ between generations, with children favoring daily activities related to a sedentarized way of living. This thesis brings new insights to the discussion on the impacts of social-ecological changes on local ecological knowledge by considering the importance of children's daily lives and perceptions in a context of change. By highlighting the specificity of children's local ecological knowledge system, results from this work stress the importance of developing methodological tools adapted to research with children. This thesis also illustrates the high autonomy and independence of Baka children and underlines that the actual behavior of children seem to be shaped by the overall community cultural setting more than by the specific parental behavior. Since childhood is a key period for the acquisition of cultural knowledge, results from thesis call for further research focusing on the potential impacts of new activities (i.e., schooling, agriculture, TV watching) on the acquisition of local ecological knowledge among the Baka. Finally, this work highlights the importance of assessing social-ecological changes not only by examining various knowledge domains and diverse social groups, but also to the broader social context and considering what people do and how they perceive their own reality.

Full textWith an ethnolinguistical approach i question the cultural relationship between two pygmy groups with different languages, Baka from Cameroon (oubanguian speaking community) and aka from C. A. R. (Bantu). By using a very wide vocabulary thematicaly arranged (nature, plants, animals, techniques, society, religion, music) i am able to show the common origin of both aka and Baka from a unique ethnic group nammed Baakaa. They separate while encoutering Bantu c10 villagers (for the aka) and oubanguian villagers (from Gbanzili-sere subgroup). By taking into account vocabularies from related languages spoken by non-pygmy groups, i look for the conditions of pygmy linguistical "mutation" : the association between these societies was based upon religious conceptions, due to both differences in appearance and forest specialization of the pygmies, obvious through the common vocabulary. Before their association with villagers, Baakaa pygmies were already forest hunter-gatherers. Lexical analysis and ethnographical comparisons give data to examine phenomenon of borrowing and transfer between differing societies, thus contributing to the more general problems of lexical evolution. The second important point resides in the lexical marks of an origin from eastern Congo basin for the Baakaa pygmies

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to develop an articulation between psychoanalysis and the practices of the Pigmy healer particularly referring to the Pygmy tribe in Cameroun known as Bakas (practicing among the community via invisible and supernatural powers) and to offer an analysis based on the hypothesis of the unconscious. Applying the usual psychoanalytical device we have come to observe that relying on the concepts of projection and repression, it is likely for the symptom to migrate without the patient being aware of it. It is therefore essential to establish a distinction between the psychopathological and the cultural in order to extract the eventual psychological alterations beyond the so called diagnosis or understanding of the healer. Shifting from the cultural to the psychoanalytical, we have discovered that once the symptom has been stripped of its cultural aspect we have been able to bring to light the universal aspect of the subjective independently from the cultural originality of the individuals familiar with rituals based on the sacred. From a clinical perspective this research enables us to approach the relation between the Pigmy culture and the hosting culture of these migrants. This is leading to a series of questioning concerning the treatment approach of the Pigmy patient particularly when confronted to the notion of transference

Full textThis qualitative study has, on the basis of the sociocultural perspective, examined the phenomenon of interaction between colleagues. The study's purpose was to examine perceptions of good interaction, based on some enrolled nurses ' perspective and the selection group consisted of seven professional enrolled nurses from five different workplaces. The study used a phenomenological approach and focus group discussions, and the research data was thematically analyzed. The results of the study consisted of five core themes, called interaction keys: Investing and see each other at work, To endeavor to be a team, To work on the basis of trust and equal interaction terms, To convey, and vary work attitude, To be able to provide and receive assistance with respect. The results were analyzed using the concepts from Wenger's theory Communities of practice, and thru that it was revealed that perceptions of a good collegial interaction in enrolled nursing practice can be said to contain the same basic elements that constitute and develops a Community of practice. This is because all interaction keys include statements that can be understood by Wenger's concept area, fellowship and internship. The result can also be understood on the basis of the sociocultural perspective's assumption that language is an essential mediating tool for learning, in a social context.

Full textƁaka is an Ubangian language of the Niger-Congo language family. The grammatical description is based on a text corpus that was collected during fieldwork in the department of Haut Nyong in the East Province of Cameroon. The corpus consists of recordings (1h and 36 min) of spontaneous speech, which were annotated in Toolbox, Elan and Praat and then analyzed from a structuralist-functionalist perspective. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part 1 contains the introduction and the phonological analysis. Part 2 is dedicated to defining the word classes. As Ɓaka is a language with little morphology, the following 15 word classes were identified through syntactic criteria: verb, noun, relational noun, personal pronoun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, numeral, predicator, preposition, subordinator, coordinator, interjection, onomatopoeia and modal. For each of these defined word classes, a study of their forms and functions is presented. Part 3 deals with the syntax of Ɓaka, more precisely with the noun phrase, the verb phrase and non-verbal predication, which are the fundamental structuring units of this language. Non-verbal predication encompasses both the use of non-verbal predicators as well as constructions that contain no dedicated predicators and are based on two juxtaposed elements, whose characteristic features are analyzed in detail. Part 3 is also concerned with complex sentences. It examines coordinating and subordinating connectors as well as topicalization and focalization strategies, which reflect hierarchical relations in the sentence. The thesis concludes with a bibliography and an appendix containing three transcribed texts from the corpus

Full textNowadays, many parametric systems support history-based , constraint-based and feature-based modelling. Unfortunately, most systems fail during the reevaluation phase when various kind of topological changes occur. This issue is known as “persistent naming”. It refers to the problem of identifying entities in an initial parametric model and matching them in the reevaluated model. Several solutions have been proposed to solve this problem, but they remain insufficient. In this thesis, we focus on the persistent and homogeneous naming of entities in any dimension (vertices, edges, aggregates of edges, faces; aggregates of faces (“shells”), volumes, aggregates of volumes, etc) and entities resulting from the intersection of non-planar objects. To do that, we propose a hierarchical platform which gathers, by relations of aggregations, entities of any dimension. Our idea is then, to begin by naming (i. E. ) to characterize and to map) the smaller usable entities: the edges. The management of names of the edges is mainly carried out by a graph tracing the evolution of these entities during the process of parametric modelling. Then, we used the computed matching between these edges by exploiting the hierarchical and aggregative structure of the topological model, in order to deduce the matching between the entities of higher dimension. Our solution is implemented on a geometric kerned based on the generalized maps model

Full textTakahotsy, a bara literary genre, always refers to an origin; the world creation is one of the ambiguous and frustrating questions that these narratives try to work out. This study proposes to analyse one aspect of the bara mythology, an ethnic group living in the south of madagascar. It rests on a corpus gathered by five investigators between 1916 and 1968. This anthology is a sample of bara literary productions referring to the origin of the world. In situating cosmogony in the oral tradition of this ethnic group, one is led to deal with a broader field : bara literature. Subsequent to this, one will have to concentrate on the corpus in order to explore the formal typology of these narratives and their mode of enunciation. Tsi movement to and from bara literature is analysed in a new fashion with the method of analysis resorted to. The aims of these narratives can therefore be laid out thanks to the analysis of forms and contents. Thus, one will discover that in bara literature, cosmogony does not only refer to an origin but can also be used to solved a specific problem which originates from the very act of narration in a given situation. Indeed, cosmogony is much more an attempt to organize the world than an attempt to go up along the course of time through the knowledge of tradition and social structure. The imaginary is expressed with talent : there appears a balance between the firmness of persuasion and the humour conveyd by the interaction of the signifying units

Full textHand hygiene is the most effective method to prevent transmission of pathogens and to decrease the prevalence of nosocomial infections. However, ”just to wash the hands” is not a sufficient protection against pathogen transmission. In addition, hand hygiene must be carried out in a proper way and when it’s indicated according to published guidelines. The aim of this literature review was to study how health care workers adhere to hand hygiene guidelines in the Western World. Mainly, it’s based on ten scientific articles that comprise studies, in which each in its own way and specific context, having evaluated adherence to hand hygiene guidelines. The result compilation shows that the overall adherence among health care workers in the Western World is low and rarely exceeds 50 %. It also shows that adherence varies between different groups of health care workers, where nurses can be established as the most compliant group. Furthermore, the usage of gloves seems to contribute to a greater adherence to handwashing in situations after patient contact. Also, the general adherence appears to be higher in situations after patient contact compared to situations before patient contact. The results reveal that adherence tends to increase when hand rub solutions are present compared to when they not are present. The effort to make hand rub solutions more accessible through the implementation of hand hygiene programmes has also been proven to successfully contribute to better adherence rates. The authors of this work desire to, as a consequence of the obvious difficulty to perform hand hygiene according to published guidelines, appeal to all health care workers to consider this problem seriously and to make their own contributions to an overall improvement.

Full textCommunication between two people consists of both verbal- and nonverbal behaviour. The nonverbal communication can strenghten or contradict the verbal communication. In some situations nonverbal communication is much more important and sometimes, it can be a better way to reach a person, than verbal communication. The aim of this study was to reveal the nonverbal communication between nurse and patient and also show its importance. The questions the study answered were: What significance does nonverbal communication have in the nurse – patient relationship and how does the nurse use this knowledge? The theoretical frame of reference for the work was Hilde Eide’s och Tomas Eide’s view of nursing communication. The method was a litterature review which was based on nine scientific articles. The results indicated that empathy, active listening and nonverbal communication are important components in the nurse – patient relationship. The study also found that empathy is a central part of both nonverbal and verbal communication. Understanding and knowledge form an emotional bond between nurse and patient and they create a solid foundation for good health care.
