Abstract:
This article looks at the contributions that historical photograph collections can make to people’s lives, by examining the ideas that museums, archives and libraries explore and apply in the management of such collections. For instance, the theme of the photograph as an historical record of events will be used to examine the archivist’s approach; the photograph as a source of information for learning or enjoyment will introduce theories developed by the library community; and the value of the photograph as a physical object will form the basis for looking at how museums approach our vast and

Based on BFO, an event-based ontology for historical description (EOHD) is designed. To define events, event-related vocabularies are taken from the Library of Congress’ event types (2012). Abstract The National Library of Poland holds three historical collections with a unified visual form. The arrangement of the Wilanów collection was carried out in the first half of the nineteenth century, whereas the Krasiński collection was arranged in the early twentieth century respectively the 1950’s or 1960’s in the case of drawings by Norwid. This contribution describes the structure of mountings found in these collections, as well as the historical context in which they were created. The author, the current head of collection management at Purdue University Libraries (West Lafayette, Indiana) and a long-time proponent of meeting user information needs with innovative collection development practices as reflected by her extensive record of scholarship, has written a provocative work that can serve as both a wake-up call and catalyst to action for academic librarians who manage collections. Ward introduces readers to the concept of “rightsizing,” a term adapted from the corporate world that can be used to encapsulate activities done to increase a library’s overall floor spac

Having lost statehood at the end of the 18th century, the people of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth desperately tried to regain it, organizing the November Uprising in 1830, and later the January Uprising in 1863–1864. Given the fact that historical science in the 19th century was elitist in nature, there was an urgent need to convey free-thinking national ideas and thoughts to the average citizen, in connection with which scientists very often resorted to journalism and literary creativity. It should be noted that for ordinary people deprived of independence, literature turned into a kind

The Berlin State Library—Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation probably suffered more from the vicissitudes of the twentieth century than any other German cultural institution. It experienced the destruction of the building and the evacuation and loss of collections. Like Berlin, it was divided after World War II and was reunited after Berlin was reunited. In 2018, the library marks a century since the establishment of the Prussian State Library. But the legacy of the past century remains. However, the scale and heterogeneity of such collections raises significant challenges when researchers attempt to find and extract relevant content. This work describes Curatr, an online platform that incorporates domain expertise and methods from machine learning to support the exploration and curation of large historical corpora. We discuss the use of this platform in making the British Library Digital Corpus of 18th and 19th century books more access

This contribution evaluates the importance of Basel-made prints for the Czech Lands based mainly on quantitative data. It also traces the representation of Basel prints produced from the end of the 15th until early 17th century in large historical collections in the Czech Republic and analyses their relative proportion in the libraries of intellectual elites. In the second part, the author tries to determine the proportion of Basel prints in the reconstructed core of the Carolinum library, which survives in collections of the current National Library of the Czech Republic.
