To understand what constitutes WLB or what influences subjective perceptions and experiences of WLB, one must interpret it through the lens of individuals who enact it every day. This thesis adopted a multilevel approach to examine employees' subjective perceptions of work-life balance among the three dimensions of influence: organisational policy framework and line manager support(internal environment) and economic climate (external environment). In contemporary capitalist economies such as the UK, it is commonly held that an increasing number of people and households experience anxiety over time and symptoms of 'time squeeze'. Existing accounts of the character and causes of this phenomenon are rather one-dimensional and lacking in nuance, however. Abstract:
This paper investigates informal employment in Brazil's highly regulated labor market, focusing on the intensive margin of informality within formal firms. Using a comprehensive dataset of labor audits conducted from 1997 to 2012, we find that formal firms caught with informal workers face sustained slower growth. Informal workers are found across firms of all sizes, and their characteristics closely resemble those of formal employees. Building on these empirical findings, we develop a dynamic general equilibrium model where firms balance the flexibility of informality against potential costs.

Abstract:
Using comprehensive balance-sheet data for Spain, we document the use of fixed-term and open-ended contracts by firms over the period 2004-2019. We show that the use of temporary contracts is very heterogeneous across firms, with the distribution of the temporary share being severely right-skewed: the median share of temporary employment is only 3%, while the average is 18%. Part of this variation is related to the sector and region where firms operate as well as to the macroeconomic cycle. However, around 80% of the variation reflects differences across firms operating in the same industry, i

Abstract:
This report focuses on firms and labor markets in Latin America and the Caribbean during the COVID-19 crisis and recovery. Through a balance sheet analysis, it shows how larger firms have navigated the crisis by cutting back on variable costs and investment, depleting their productive capital. It also shows that small and medium-size enterprises suffered more in closures and restrictions on credit access, and the unprecedented impacts on labor markets, where participation rates and particularly women suffered the most. Moreover, labor informality has increased and is now more endemic than ever

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the effects of recent Venezuelan immigration to Colombia on the fiscal balance, the labor market, and economic growth. For this purpose, we built a dynamic general equilibrium model with a search and matching structure in the labor market. The higher fiscal spending to address immigration negatively impacts the government's budget in the short term, which is offset by higher output, consumption, and employment level, increasing the government's revenues mainly through indirect tax collection. The effect on the labor market is different for unskilled workers--whose higher su

Abstract:
Written for the Second Congressional Commission on Education and based on existing research, this Policy Note provides a snapshot of the country’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET). It finds that enrollment and graduation from TVET programs have increased over time, but the COVID-19 pandemic has impeded this progress. People are more inclined to seek community-based training programs than enterprise-based training programs. In terms of reasons for taking TVET, participants are starting to appreciate the program’s value in upskilling and retooling beyond just gaining employ

Abstract:
Companies face different effective marginal tax rates on their income. This can be detrimental to allocative efficiency unless taxes offset other distortions in the economy. This paper estimates the effect of tax rate heterogeneity on aggregate productivity in distorted economies with multiple frictions. Using firm-level balance-sheet data and estimates of marginal tax rates, we find that tax heterogeneity reduces total factor productivity by about 3 percent. Our findings highlight the positive correlation between marginal tax rates and other distortions to capital and especially labor. This i

Open banking initiatives, which aim to increase competition and innovation in the financial sector by enabling the customer-authorised sharing of financial data among banks, regulated third-party providers and other financial stakeholders, are becoming widespread around the world. This paper investigates the impact of open banking on the development of the fintech sector, focusing particularly on payment-related financial services. We utilise the implementation of the Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) in Europe as a natural experiment and employ a difference-in-differences methodology t
