Abstract:
This project explored the way working mothers cope with home, work, family demands as well as self-care. It mainly focused on the balance they have been able to achieve in their lives as working women, wife, and mothers. This study used qualitative research to examine the challenges these women face in their working and personal lives, the support systems they rely on to fulfill their multiple roles, and the strategies and coping skills they utilize to maintain work and family life balance. This study used an interview format with a qualitative method based. In this approach, primarily open-ended questions were used. The major focus was to explore and then compared participants’ responses to those questions. This method was chosen because it allows for a comparison of different experiences of a common topic The challenges discussed by the working women included: (a) work schedule, (b) time constraints and (c) exhaustion. The participants relied on the following support systems to fulfill their multiple roles: (a) husbands, (b) grandparent and family, (c) co-workers, and (d) bosses. Finally, the strategies the working women used to achieve work/family balance included (a) planning, (c) faith, and (d) accepting limitations.

Organisations have been concerned for some time with work-life balance. Several programmes and benefits have been created to promote a better employees work-life balance, aiming to improve the productivity. It is also in the interest of academics to study the impact of the imbalance on organisations and on employees well-being, as wells as its causes and consequences. However, the majority of these studies are focused on upper class workers, who are also known as white-collars, while little attention is paid to the less qualified professionals. This fact has motivated this study, which has the objective to comprehend how work-life balance is perceived by individuals from different socioeconomic strata. Anchored in Bourdieu s (2007) assumptions that individual perceptions are impacted by social class or fraction of class, it is presumed that the work-life balance is perceived differently by individuals from different professional segments. Through qualitative research, workers from different socioeconomic strata were interviewed aiming to understand the perception of each one in relation to work-life balance. The results indicated that work-life balance is better comprehended by workers with higher socioeconomic status, suggesting that this concept was defined by the elite, the academic researchers, members of the intelectual elite of the society (Bourdieu, 2007), for the elite.

Applewhite, Pamela Applewhite. "Examining the Role of Emotional Intelligence in the Work and Life Balance of Foster Care Workers." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3517.

Full text
Abstract:
Foster care workers are an important part of the social service system, as they are the first line of support for children without families or who have been subjected to tragic events leading to their need for foster care. Foster care workers often experience work-life boundary issues due to the emotional nature of their work. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between (a) emotional intelligence and absenteeism and (b) emotional intelligence and work-life balance with foster care workers. Data was collected from foster care workers in the state of South Carolina employed with the Department of Social Services (n=200). Participants completed the Emotional Social Competency Inventory (ESCI) and the Work Related Quality of Life Scale (WRQoL) via pen and paper and email receipts. Ordinary least squares regression was used, including methods for mediation testing; multivariate analysis of covariance was also carried out for robustness testing purposes. No significant relationship was found between emotional intelligence and absenteeism. There was a significant relationship between various elements of emotional intelligence and various elements of work-life balance, but the effect sizes were small (> 0.04). There were no significance effects based on the results for absenteeism. Overall, the results illuminate the role of emotional intelligence on the work and life balance of foster care workers. One recommendation for future research would be to distinguish between voluntary and involuntary absenteeism. The results of the study can be used by organizations that employ foster care workers to improve the work and life balance and the effects of absenteeism in this line of work.

Mahlanza, Matlala Nono. "Investigating organisational factors that impact on engagement of knowledge workers in the banking sector of Botswana." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020031.

Full text
Abstract:
There is extensive literature on employee engagement; its antecedents; linkages to positive business outcomes; and its positive impact on retention. Top performing organisations have even found that aligning the engagement strategies to the business goals drive performance outcomes. There is no universal definition of employee engagement and drivers, therefore, a general approach without due cognisance of worker demographics may result in the application of inappropriate engagement strategies. In this study, the focus is on knowledge workers within the banking sector of Botswana. Knowledge workers make up almost two thirds of organisations and are said to be unique and complex in their nature. Work to a knowledge worker is more mental than physical, hence, the need to use interventions aimed at the behaviour to increase their performance. The needs of a knowledge worker and that of the business ought to be integrated. An organisation that is able to identify those factors that would influence their engagement is promised high levels of productivity that would translate into profits and high retention. The main research problem for this study was to determine the strategies that should be used to engage knowledge workers within the banking sector in Botswana. A literature study was conducted to identify characteristics of knowledge workers, meaning of employee engagement and approaches to measuring employee engagement. Eleven organisational factors that have an influence on employee engagement and some of the engagement strategies were identified from literature. The eleven factors identified were: growth and development; rewards and recognition; trust in leadership; work/life balance; two way communication; mission, vision and values; quality of manager; relationship with colleagues; fairness of HR policies; job design; and accountability. An empirical study was also conducted to investigate which of the eleven organisational factors had an influence in the engagement of knowledge workers. The current engagement level of knowledge workers within the banking sector was measured using the Gallup Q12 measuring tool. The main findings from this research are that a significant number of knowledge workers are engaged. The findings of this study also coincide with the theoretical overview that there are organisational factors that have an influence on the engagement of employees. A significant finding was that, although knowledge workers differ in their perception of the organisational factors, they generally indicate that work/life balance initiatives are lacking in their workplace.

Ocampo, Evelyn. "EFFECTS OF ON-CALL WORK ON PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL WORKERS." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/296.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempted to examine the effects of on-call work schedules on professional social workers. This was achieved through the use of a demographic survey and qualitative face-to-face and phone interviews. A total of 15 interview questions were explored, the subjects included: the impacts of on-call work on psychological, physiological, emotional well-being and work family balance of professional social workers. Participants were recruited using availability sampling and the sample size consisted of nine participants. The nine interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The researcher identified common themes related to on-call work schedules. Results found that participants suffered familial disruption as well as impacts on their well-being and support system. There was also a lack of access to patient information and similar difficulties experienced by participants while on-call. Participants also provided suggestions in order to improve on-call experiences. It is recommended that similar studies be conducted on a larger sample size to insure generalizability and a greater understanding of the impacts on-call work has on the social work profession.

Abstract:
This study examines the jobs-housing balance and the excess commute of Saturn employees in Spring Hill. Until recently, the number of jobs has greatly exceeded the number of houses. In 2005 the balance is about even, however many newer residents are believed to be people who work in Nashville. Many Saturn employees live on the outskirts of Spring Hill and must commute longer distances to work. A spatial analysis using GIS of employee home locations shows that 74% of employees commute is in excess compared to if employees actually lived within Spring Hill. Surveys of Saturn employees shows traffic en route to work is a major frustration. It is suggested that future housing development in Spring Hill occur closer to Saturn. This will equilibrate the jobs-housing balance and will reduce the excess commute. Other Southern towns may wish to consider these results when planning for the development of automobile manufacturers.

Abstract:
The objective and purpose of this PhD is to provide pragmatic solutions to the Posted Workers Directive 96/71/EC.1 This European Union legislation is designed to govern a unique category of worker that moves throughout the internal market temporarily under the provision of services. The Directive was created to protect workers’ rights, combat social dumping by ensuring a climate of fair competition and promote the transnational provision of services. In practice, it has failed to fulfil its objectives, as seen by the Laval Triplet.2 Therefore, following a thorough analysis of the issues that are intrinsic to the Directive itself and also highlight wider issues such as the competing interests of the internal market and national labour law as well as the conflicting economic and social policy interests, this thesis will provide legislative solutions which will constitute the requisite original contribution to knowledge. The thesis is composed of five parts, beginning with the Introduction and ending with the Conclusions. The central Chapters follow the chronological order of the Directive’s story as follows: Chapter 1 details why and how the Directive was created including an analysis of the early case law; Chapter 2 analyses the issues associated with the Directive and it offers an original critique of the Court’s interpretation of the Directive; and Chapter 3 reviews the solutions that have already been suggested by the EU Institutions, the European Social Partners and the academic literature before providing my own input to the field. The form of methodology adopted throughout is therefore doctrinal.

Pickerden, Anita Mary. "How do older workers in the Fire and Rescue Service deal with work life balance issues as they plan for, approach, and transition through retirement?" Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28490.

Full text
Abstract:
How can older workers in the public sector maintain a satisfactory work life balance in the last ten or fifteen years of their career and into retirement? Organisational policies designed to support work life balance may help, but only if there is a corporate will to overcome prevailing internal culture, together with an understanding of the specific needs of older workers. Work life balance, which has gained importance over the past few decades, is defined here as the way in which individuals apportion time spent in their paid work with all of the other activities in their lives. Those approaching the end of their working lives come from a workaholic generation used to long hours as a way of showing loyalty to their employers, whereas their younger colleagues expect good work life balance as the norm. While the notion of work life balance for those who are no longer in paid work may seem strange, the way an individual plans for and controls the manner of their retirement may impact their well-being both before and after retirement. For many, retirement is no longer a single step from employment into non-employment; rather a phased reduction or sometimes ‘un-retirement’ and these changes may affect individual perceptions of their work life balance. This qualitative study, with uniformed and non-uniformed staff aged 45+ employed by a metropolitan Fire & Rescue Service, enabled participants to consider their work life balance issues; particularly whether there were any issues that were specific to that age cohort; and whether those issues might change as they moved towards and through retirement, although few had made detailed plans about their post-retirement lives. The effectiveness of organisational work life balance policies was found to be subject to the prevailing culture as well as pressures on the public sector to reduce staffing levels while maintaining front line services. The effects of the abolition of the Default Retirement Age and changes in the pension schemes have yet to be fully addressed by the organisation or individual employees.

Abstract:
Introduction: Low Back Pain Syndrome is commonly classified as a set of signs and symptoms, of multifactorial origin. Rural work has been currently reported in the scientific literature as one of the most harmful labor practices to human health. Objective: Characterizing low back pain syndrome and associated factors in rural workers exposed to short- to long-term pesticides. Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional and analytical study in which 322 male rural workers aged 18-59 years old have been exposed to pesticides and the parameters evaluated were: anthropometric characteristics, socio-demographic (marital status, alcoholism and smoking) , acute and chronic pain index in the lumbar spine, hip, knee and ankle through Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Body Map, as well as functional parameters: body balance through the BERG Balance Scale (BBS), Risk of falls: Time Up and Go Test (TUG TEST) and functionality by OSWESTRY (ODI). The statistical approach was analytical descriptive. Results: Regarding the anthropometric parameters observed: age (34.9 ± 8.4 years), weight (72.9 ± 5.3 kg), height (1.69 ± 0.05) and BMI (24.7 ± 1,9 kg / m²). Most workers n=216 (67.1%) were in the age group of 18-39 years, adequate BMI n=179 (41.9%), time of exposure to pesticides =36 months n=202 (62,7%), predominantly single (n=225) (69.9%), low consumption of tobacco and alcohol respectively, n=193 (59.9%) n=183 (56.8%). It was evidenced that a sample presents acute low back pain n = 219 (66.1%), hip pain n =238 (73.9%) and moderate functional disability n=139 (43.2%). There was a strong correlation between TUG TEST vs. ODI (r= 0.8, p=0.01). Acute low back pain. Age (r=0.8, p=0.01), marital status (r=0.75, p=0.01). Conclusion: The data suggest that rural workers present a higher rate of mild acute low back pain and mild to moderate hip pain, low body imbalance, moderate risk of falls and moderate functional disability.

Abstract:
In recent years, a growing body of research has examined the issue of work–life balance (WLB). WLB initiatives have been developed by organisations, not only to aid employees in leading healthier and more satisfying lives, but to attract and retain talent. One area where WLB issues have not been examined in detail is from the perspective of Chinese immigrant women. As one of the largest and growing Asian ethnic groups, the WLB issues faced by Chinese women are especially worthy of being examined and addressed. The primary purpose of this research was to explore the WLB experience of Chinese women in administrative roles at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). It also aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on WLB issues for minority ethnic groups and investigated Chinese women’s coping strategies for integrating work with their non-work roles. An exploratory qualitative case study approach was adopted for this study in order to compare and contrast organisational initiatives and policies for WLB with women’s experiences. A triangulated research design was also employed to glean qualitative data by virtue of multiple methods including archival evidence such as publicly available documentation, secondary research on WLB and AUT’s WLB policies, and semi-structured interviews. This study involved 12 Chinese female administrative staff and three staff members from the Human Resource Department (HRD), the Asian Staff Network (ASN) and the AUT Branch of Tertiary Institutes Allied Staff Association (TIASA). Participants were recruited by utilising sources such as the Asian Staff Network (ASN) and the researcher’s network of contacts within AUT. The findings of the study indicated that Chinese women’s WLB experience and ways of handling work–family conflict (WFC) and family–work conflict (FWC) were affected by their experiences of immigration and cultural backgrounds. In particular, their family situation had a critical influence on the way they organised their households and arranged for childcare or eldercare. Child/elder care responsibilities, personal/family emergencies, and personal/individual sacrifice engendered tensions around their ability to integrate WLB. In addition, work factors such as heavy workloads, meeting deadlines, and working longer hours, and cultural barriers caused emotional stress and physical consequences. While informal support from managers and colleagues and the WLB policies offered by the university helped women address their WLB issues, some policies were underutilised. A variety of coping strategies such as family members, win-lose strategies, time management, building clear boundaries, changing mindsets, and demonstrating commitment were actively adopted by Chinese women as mechanisms to cope with tensions between their work and family lives. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of the theory and practice of WLB.

Abstract:
Eleven male and 10 female freelance production workers were interviewed about their experiences of life within the New Zealand film industry. Respondents’ accounts contrast sharply with glamorous images of the industry portrayed in the media. Respondents enjoyed the creative challenges, camaraderie, excitement, and intensity of their working lives and identified strongly with their work. However, they also experienced continual financial insecurity, unpredictable and demoralising periods of unemployment, and recurrent problems maintaining a reasonable work-life balance. Many of the older respondents cited these factors as their main reason for attempting to find work outside the industry. Female production workers appeared to pay a particularly high price for their involvement in the industry and often sacrificed other areas of their lives for their careers. Women frequently compensated for this imbalance by becoming even more career focussed, thus compounding the problems in non-work areas of their lives. Respondents’ accounts are interpreted in relation to current structural conditions, working practices, and power imbalances within the New Zealand film industry. It is argued that freelance production workers’ complex psychological relationship with their work is simultaneously a product of their work environment and helps to perpetuate industry conditions which disadvantage the workforce.

With the changes in the work organization and the emergence of the flexible production system, especially from the 80`s, new work arrangements have appeared. One of them is the reduced hours working day in which one works a total of weekly hours smaller than the standard. Parallel to this phenomenon, the female participation in the market place has increased more noticeably from the 70`s and the conflicts between work and family have become more frequent. The reduced hours employment is pointed by some researchers as potentially favourable to the conciliation between work and family. Other researchers about the reduced hours job think it is disadvantageous to the workers because it is not their choice and it results in salary, benefit and career losses. Due to these controversies and because there isn t much research about it in Brazil, we aim to study the impact of the reduced hours work in the banks since it works with thirty-hour working day. For this reason, union trade representatives and bank workers who were employed in the countryside of São Paulo`s state were interviewed based on semi-structured outlines. Some information were collected from the RAIS (Annual List of Social Information) data base considering the period of 1994 to 2002. We found out that on the one hand the thirty-hour working day helps the bank workers to have more free time for their personal/ family activities, but most of times they don t work in this scheme by own choice and end up dealing with salary losses, less development opportunities, limited professional rise and less time to develop their activities. These aspects can limit the potential advantages of this kind of employment to the balance between work and family. We also noticed that the percentage of bank workers on thirty-hour working days in Brazil and São Paulos`s state has been decreasing and there is the predominance of women in this kind of job. Still the salary losses have been sharper for bank workers on thirty-hour working days and to the women.

Abstract: The present work was based in a data set obtained in a larger research project named ¿(In)Segurança Alimentar em Grupos de Agricultores Familiares do Brasil¿ developed in the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (FCM) and Faculdade de Engenharia Agrícola (FEAGRI) with Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) registered as number 503527/2003-3, and made possible by the Edital CTAGRO/MCT/CNPq/MESA 01/2003. The data refers to three assentamentos rurais established at different times, through the action of the Landless Movement (MST) in Pontal do Paranapanema region, where social movements like that are very strong. The main objective was to measure the food security of the population living in the rural settlements, as much as its relation with self sustainable food production, here understood as production of fruits and vegetables in small areas and raising of small animals. For that the methodology called Escala Brasileira de Insegurança Alimentar (EBIA) was used. This method uses questionnaires with key questions that indicate whether there is food security or food insecurity (this last one divided in light, moderate and strong). From the 301 families interviewed, the following situation was envisaged: 41,1% in food security (SA); 40,7% in light food insecurity (IL), 14,1% in moderate food insecurity (IM) and 4,0% in strong food insecurity (IG). It was verified that the families that have self-sustainable production (animal and plant production) are in better food security conditions than those that did not had this production. It was concluded that to observe how the settled families relate the production designated to self consumption and yours relation with the insecurity food condition seems to be an indication to overcome the hunger condition that affect many families even in the rural area

Abstract:
This research examines the competitive balance of the CSL since its formation using two popular within-season balance measures. Findings show that balance has been more volatile since league reorganization, but is neither consistently more nor less balanced. Furthermore, we question whether it is coincidental that the CSL was most balanced across all teams in the seasons immediately following its establishment and reorganization, hypothesizing that the traditional Chinese cultural value of harmony may be the root cause. Simple comparisons of win concentrations of top Chinese and UEFA teams do not suggest league imbalance. Given Chinese fan penchant for national team games, we propose that (contrary to the UOH) league interest could potentially be increased by greater imbalance skewed toward the top teams.

Abstract:
The aging of the population, the mass entry of women into the labor market, verified in recent years, the increase in life expectancy and the lengthening of the retirement age with the Fornero-Monti Reform, contributed to the change of the morphology of the family, of working contexts and of society as a whole, making clear the need to better understand the dynamics that these changes entail. Although the aging of female workers represents an important change, this phenomenon has not been analyzed yet. The present study aims to understand and shed light on the characteristics of of workers over 50, especially to know the peculiarities of their family / extra-work and work relationships through the sociological concept of Social Capital considered of extreme importance to understand the potential of female workers. The research involved 4962 workers between 50 and 69 years of 18 companies associated with Valore D, throughout Italy, who completed a questionnaire. The study shows that female workers still have a good level of potential and that the CSF and CSL can play an important important role as a resource for women in this phase of their life, but also for companies and society itself.

Perez, Pauline. "Les intermittents du travail." Thesis, Jouy-en Josas, HEC, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHEC0007/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on the results of a 3-year field study among a population of occasional French workers named after the researcher "Intermittents du travail", this research aims at understanding what is expected from today's work and what is rejected in the way executives experience it. After achieving brillant studies and a successful career start as executives in a big company, the "Intermittents du travail" left everything to come and live on the French West Coast, attempting to design a new way of working which would grant less space to work and more space to private activities. We choose the theoretical framework of the French psychosociology of work and the clinical practical approach that underlies it (Lhuilier et al.,2013) to interpret the data. By conceiving work transitions as an intricacy between resistance and creation processes, both at micro-and macro-social levels, this approach enables us to unveil some mecanisms potentially harmful in today's work that would make top-level workers deeply unsatisfied about the true nature of a work they had dreamt of and idealized during so many years before.Furthermore, the analysis of the transition's aftermaths reveals the critical aspects of what a "good job" should consist in as appositive to the "bullshit job" (Graeber,2013)these people experienced previously: the importance of working as a craftsman in every situation- which means to be concerned by the beauty and the quality of work, both using the head and the hands (Sennette,2010)-, the art of unravelling, the capacity of balancing work activities with leisure ones and, among others

Wake, Nicholas. "Towards an understanding of the balanced scorecard as a means of management control of knowledge workers." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/3215/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how the Balanced Scorecard supports management control of knowledge workers. The research takes a case study approach, analyzing three divisions within the Rolls Royce Marine business. The literature is used to both frame the research question and to generate a number of theoretical propositions and a priori constructs which the research explores. The work relies on participant observation, in‐depth interviewing and documentary data as data collection methods. Data analysis is through in vivo analysis of interview data, relying on triangulation between data sources. The analysis yields a number of results. Firstly, the research situates the balanced scorecard as an important strategic communication mechanism, but one that is not used for operational control system. It situates the balanced scorecard as one of a number of control systems within the organisations case studied, providing evidence of where the balanced scorecard supports control activities. This research provides a number of contributions to knowledge. Two frameworks are created: the first – the management control typology is important since it draws together strands of research and provides a single framework for management control systems. The second, the knowledge worker typology provides a system for understanding the different types of knowledge work and hence advances the debate on defining what is a knowledge worker. The empirical investigation provides some tentative conclusions on the different types of control systems used for different types of knowledge worker. It also identifies that the way in which the balanced scorecard is used within the case study organisations differs from the approach suggested by the original literature. The work argues that to understand management control systems in their entirety, it is necessary to both understand what the management control system is and also how it is used. The work concludes by suggesting a research agenda which explores the cultural aspects of management control systems in more depth.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Fall risk increases with age and visual impairment, yet the oldest-old adults (>85 years) are rarely studied. Partnered dance improves mobility, balance, and quality of life in older individuals with movement impairment. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the feasibility and participant satisfaction of an adapted tango program amongst these oldest-old adults with visual impairment. Exploratory analyses were conducted to determine efficacy of the program in improving balance and gait. Methods: In a repeated-measures, one-group experimental design, 13 older adults (7 women; age: M = 86.9 years, SD = 5.9 years, range = 77–95 years) with visual impairment (best eye acuity: M = 0.63, SD = 0.6 logMAR) participated in an adapted tango program of twenty 1.5-hour lessons, within 11 weeks. Feasibility included evaluation of facility access, safety, volunteer assistant retention, and participant retention and satisfaction. Participants were evaluated for balance, lower body strength, and quality of life in two baseline observations, immediately after the program and 1 month later. Results: Twelve participants completed the program. The facility was adequate, no injuries were sustained, and participants and volunteers were retained throughout. Participants reported enjoyment and improvements in physical well-being. Exploratory measures of dynamic postural control (p < .001), lower body strength (p = .056), and general vision-related quality of life (p = .032) scores showed improvements following training. Discussion: These older individuals with visual impairment benefitted from 30 hours of tango instruction adapted for their capabilities.

Abstract:
Despite the relatively consistent finding that Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and low Neuroticism are associated with the practice of health-promoting behaviors, the reasons for these linkages are not well understood. This prospective study addressed this gap by taking a self-regulation resource perspective on why these traits relate to health-promoting behaviors by examining the role of higher positive relative to negative state affect. Students completed baseline (N = 330), and two week follow-up (N = 195) surveys. Bootstrapping analyses of the indirect effects of each of the three traits on Time 2 health behaviors were significant in the expected directions, with Kappa squares ranging from .11 to .13. In the full longitudinal analyses controlling for Time 1 health behaviors, the indirect effects of Conscientiousness and Agreeableness through affect balance on Time 2 health behaviors were positive and significant, whereas the indirect effects through Neuroticism were negative and significant after accounting for the Time 1 practice of health behaviors. These findings provide a process-oriented understanding of how Big Five traits are linked to health-promoting behaviors and extend previous research supporting a self-regulation resource perspective on personality and health behaviors.

Abstract:
The use of low-cost interactive game technology for balance rehabilitation has become more popular recently, with generally good outcomes. Very little research has been undertaken to determine whether this technology is appropriate for balance assessment. The Wii balance board has good reliability and is comparable to a research-grade force plate; however, recent studies examining the relationship between Wii Fit games and measures of balance and mobility demonstrate conflicting findings. This study found that the Wii Fit was feasible for community-dwelling older women to safely use the balance board and quickly learn the Wii Fit games. The Ski Slalom game scores were strongly correlated with several balance and mobility measures, whereas Table Tilt game scores were not. Based on these findings, the Ski Slalom game may have utility in the evaluation of balance problems in community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract:
Background: Case reports are presented on four Veterans, aged 29–46 years, who complained of chronic dizziness and/or postural instability following blast exposures. Two of the four individuals were diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury and three of the four were exposed to multiple blasts. Comprehensive vestibular, balance, gait, audiometry and neuroimaging procedures were used to characterize their injuries.Case report: Vestibular assessment included videonystagmography, rotary chair and cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. Balance and gait testing included the sensory organization test, preferred gait speed and the dynamic gait index. Audiometric studies included pure tone audiometry and middle-ear measurements. Neuroimaging procedures included high resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging, susceptibility-weighted imaging and diffusion-tensor imaging.Findings: Based on the neuroimaging and vestibular and balance test results, it was found that all individuals had diffuse axonal injuries and all had one or more micro-hemorrhages or vascular anomalies. Three of the four individuals had abnormal vestibular function, all had abnormally slow walking speeds and two had abnormal gait and balance dysfunction. Conclusion: The use of contemporary neuroimaging studies in conjunction with comprehensive vestibular and balance assessment provided a better understanding of the pathophysiology and pathoanatomy of dizziness following blast exposures than standard vestibular and balance testing alone.

Walters, Christopher Matchette. "A conductor's analysis of standard choral works applying the high challenge-skill balance dimension of flow theory." Thesis, Boston University, 2014. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/11078.

Abstract:
Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston University
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's psychological construct "flow"-a subjective state describing an individual's optimal experience and engagement during intrinsically-motivated activity-has remained influential with respect to widely divergent fields of inquiry. Review of recent literature in music psychology and music education concerned specifically with flow, or "flow theory," reveals certain aspects of musical experience, and of choral experience. However, the application of flow theory specifically to the context ofchoral music-making remains largely underdeveloped, particularly as it concerns the subjectively-perceived nature of the construct. The present document presents a conductor's analysis ofthree standard choral works in light of this subjectively-perceived nature of the high challenge-skill balance dimension of flow theory. Chapter One considers the origins of flow theory, and elaborates upon the so-called nine "dimensions" of the flow experience. Additionally, this chapter offers a review of the relevant research concerned with: flow in music learning, flow experience in group settings, and flow in choral ensembles. Chapter Two outlines the document's analytical framework, which puts forward the possibility of accounting for the subjectively-perceived nature of challenges and skills-as espoused by the most contemporary conceptions of flow theory-through the lens of identifying "salient potential challenges" in choral works. Chapter Three analyzes three standard choral works: Jean-Baptist Weckerlin's Mon coeur se recommande avous, Johannes Brahms' O schone Nacht (op. 92, no. 1), and Joseph Haydn's Te Deum (Hob. XXIIIc: 2). Salient potential challenges to be found in each piece are explored in terms of the following common analytical categories: vocal/technical challenges, tonal/rhythmic challenges, and structural awareness challenges. Chapter Four offers a concluding summary as well as suggestions for further research. Structural diagrams, and texts and translations, made available in the appendices to the document, supplement the analytical work.
