Mäkeläinen, M. (Marko). "Algorithms for opportunistic load balancing cognitive engine." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2013. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201303011071.

Abstract:
Due to the increasing use of more and more powerful smart devices demands on the scarce radio spectrum are becoming more intense. One way to cope with increasing demands on radio spectrum is to apply innovative and flexible authorization schemes like spectrum sharing. Under the spectrum sharing paradigm, multiple users and/or systems are authorized to utilize the same spectrum band in a defined sharing agreement. A technology that is generally recommended for the implementation of spectrum sharing is called cognitive radio (CR). In this thesis, we design and implement a cognitive engine (CE) that intelligently and dynamically allocates spectrum resources to users. We first consider a scenario where a network has an exclusive access to a spectrum band and the CE accepts or rejects the arrival user requests based on an algorithm that takes into account a user’s priority and its bandwidth demand. We then consider a spectrum sharing scenario where along with the exclusive utilization to its own spectrum band a network also can opportunistically utilize another network’s spectrum band. For this scenario, we design and implement a CE that performs two main tasks: 1) Accepts or rejects arrival user requests based on a priority based algorithm; and 2) it intelligently load balances the user traffic between the two available network resources, while taking into account the primary user activity in the shared spectrum band. We provide a load balancing algorithm and evaluate its performance under different primary and secondary user traffic scenarios. We show that the proposed load balancing algorithm increases average throughput of the network and it also reduces the average number of users rejected by the network
Yhä tehokkaampien älykkäiden langattomien päätelaitteiden nopea lisääntyminen johtaa niukan radiospektrin yhä kiihtyvään käyttöön. Eräs menetelmä radiospektrin lisääntyvän kysynnän tyydyttämiseen on hyödyntää innovatiivista ja joustavaa resurssin käytönjakoa kuten spektrin jakamista. Spektrinjakamismalli mahdollistaa useiden käyttäjien ja/tai järjestelmien yhtäaikaisen käytön samalla taajuuskaistalla hyödyntämällä sovittua käytäntöä resurssien jakamisesta. Radiospektrin jakaminen on tänä päivänä yleisesti suositeltu toteuttamaan hyödyntämällä kognitiivista radioteknologiaa.

Hillerborg, Per. "Dynamic Model of a Diesel Engine for Diagnosis and Balancing." Thesis, KTH, Reglerteknik, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-107535.

Abstract:
To monitor and control the combustion in a diesel engine one can study the speed signal from the flywheel. The idea is that if individual cylinders give different amount of torque this will lead to variations in the flywheel speed. A model which describes the cylinder torque based on flywheel speed can be used to estimate the torque from individual cylinders. With this new knowledge of the individual performance of each cylinder the engine can be balanced. The balancing aim at making the speed of the flywheel more even but also required a model with estimated cylinder torque as input. This model may also be used for testing new control algorithms easily and gaining understanding of the dynamics. In this thesis a time dissolved model is constructed to describe the cylinder pressure-, crankshaft-, flywheel and damper dynamics. The model is based on a physical point of view by approximating the system into nodes containing mass, stiffness and friction. The inputs into the model are injection data from the engine management system (EMS) and a torque from a drive line. Ways to reduce the complexity of the model are investigated in order to invert the model to estimate the injection data based on flywheel speed measurements. Measurementsare done in a test bed to receive data required for model simulation and validation. The result is that the main behavior of the dynamics is caught. The self oscillation behaviors in some operating points are however not caught which indicates that the model can not explain all behaviors. A reduced model works almost as well but of course looses more of the non stiffness behavior. As expected, the model equations can not be solved in real time. The result of the inverted reduced model depends on the flywheel signal. When the signal contains little non stiffness behavior the result is good. An observer model based on the reduced model is suggested and tested in order to estimate the indicated torque from flywheel data. The observer manages to detect errors in the injection.

To investigate this question an A/B style listening test is conducted, where the subjects get to answer both quantitative and qualitative questions. The answers are then analyzed using simple t-tests and categorizations of the qualitative information. The results of the test indicate that the mix with VBS is preferred in both the headphones and the laptop. There are no information indicating that the VBS has affected the mix in a poor or good way in the Loudspeakers.

Abstract:
Introduction Overall the evidence is consistent and robust that UK South Asian communities are at elevated risk of lifestyle related disease. A potential worsening of obesity related risk in South Asian children carries implications for persisting disparities in chronic disease across generations making it advantageous to target this specific group for obesity prevention. Psychosocial factors are particularly important in obesity and key to understanding the determinants of dietary and physical activity behaviour, and factors that might influence behaviour modification in South Asians. The study aims to identify beliefs and perceptions that contribute to health risk and health protective behaviours in young UK South Asian families and to develop a theory which can be used to define specific objectives that lead to effective behaviour change to improve health outcomes for this population. Design Grounded theory methodology was applied to investigate how factors influence South Asian mother’s decisions to engage in health behaviours for themselves and their children taking into account specific beliefs and practices influencing health behaviours. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with seven female participants who were mothers to young children aged 5-12 years of age. Results The grounded theory is underpinned by three categories that emerged out of analysis of the data; cultural identity, health beliefs and barriers. These categories and their properties, tell the story of the influences and pressures on South Asian mothers as they attempt to negotiate a healthy family lifestyle. The data emerged to form a grounded theory of the balancing act South Asian mothers engage in to negotiate a healthy family lifestyle. Conclusions This study contributes to an improved understanding of the unique factors influencing young South Asian family’s health behaviours and recognition of the need to help them to find a healthier lifestyle balance. In addition, it has revealed how these factors relate to the initiation and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle and will be of use to health professionals and service providers when designing interventions to address and prevent health inequalities among this group. Emphasising the need to involve both the family and their community in interventions, in order for them to be effective. Limitations of these findings and their implications for future research and practice are considered.

Abstract:
Since internal combustion engines made their early appearance, continuous evolutions took place in order to fulfill the requests of their application domains, whether pursuing reliability improvement, higher engine power or even manufacturing optimization and cost sustainability. Nowadays there is a growing concern about environmental issues, including oil reserves shortage, economic and financial crisis impact, so driving critical increase of energetic efficiency in internal combustion engines, as a field of study. In this context arises the concept of over-expanded engine, for it shows higher efficiency, allowing less fuel consumption and lower polluting emissions than conventional engines. The present work describes the manufacturing constraints and solutions of an experimental internal combustion engine, the UMotor. This is an over-expanded cycle engine under development in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of University of Minho, to equip the EconomicUM, a formula Shell® prototype vehicle. A theoretical overview is presented about the over-expanded cycle engines, describing its principles of operation and their possibilities in the society. The work is focused on the development and manufacturing of components of the engine, including the crankcase, the camshaft, the rocker arms, the crankshaft and the intake manifold. The work presents an overview of the actual stage in the development of components, including modifications to the project using CAD/CAM tools, and describes the manufacturing processes and procedures to be undertaken in the near future to achieve a fully functional prototype engine.
