Master 's thesis deals with design of a drivetrain of six cylinder inline engine with cylinder deactivation for heavy agricultural vehicles. In this thesis were devised various possibilities of crankshaft balancing, the best design solution of counterweight was based on optimization in software Catia. Further, the crankshaft was analysed for force and momentum loading and torsional vibration, based on which, the torsional vibration damper was designed. There were considered several options for cylinder deactivation, which were analysed for finest run of engine and the best thermal distribution. Based on these criteria, the best option was to deactivate 2nd and 5th cylinder. The crankshaft was analysed for the fatigue failure by finite element method. The fatigue failure is the most dangerous case for the crankshaft, the resulting safety factor for this limit state is 3,05.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an implementation of a controller for a redundantly-actuated parallel mechanism.
Firstly, an introduction to the structure and kinematic properties of the parallel mechanism is presented. We begin by describing the ASI hydraulic actuator, the main constituents of the mechanism, and move on to review the properties of the whole system. The inverse and forward relationships are derived, and the Jacobian matrix of the system is calculated using velocity analysis.
The controller of the shoulder employs the above properties and relationships to balance for any external forces, in particular the gravity, and to estimate its magnitude. This is done in two steps: damping the motion to rest primarily, and subsequently, determining the bias and actual force vectors in static equilibrium. Finally, the results of the experiments are presented.
The formulation of the optimization of the force distribution problem is then studied. Given an overdetermined system, we present two methods for finding the optimal minimum-norm vector of forces, one in Hilbert space and the other in a generalized complete normed space. The latter is indeed an algorithmic procedure for obtaining a minimum $ infty$-norm or a minimum effort solution, which is a solution of a set of equations whose maximum component's magnitude is the smallest possible. In this method, the dual of problem is solved and then the optimal solution is generated by using concepts from functional analysis.

This thesis presents the Data Processing Slice Load Balancing solution to enable dynamic load balancing of Data Stream Processing on DDS-based systems (Data Distribution Service). A large number of applications require continuous and timely processing of high-volume of data originated from many distributed sources, such as network monitoring, traffic engineering systems, intelligent routing of cars in metropolitan areas, sensor networks, telecommunication systems, financial applications and meteorology. The key concept of the proposed solution is the Data Processing Slice (DPS), which is the basic unit of data processing load of server nodes in a DDS Domain. The Data Processing Slice Load Balancing solution consists of a load balancer, which is responsible for monitoring the current load of a set of homogenous data processing nodes and when a load unbalance is detected, it coordinates the actions to redistribute some data processing slices among the processing nodes in a secure way. Experiments with large data stream have demonstrated the low overhead, good performance and the reliability of the proposed solution.

Ong, Chin Guan. "Shaking and Balance of a Convertible One- and Two-Cylinder Reciprocating Compressor." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31433.

Abstract:
This research involves the study of a one- and two-cylinder convertible reciprocating Freon compressor for air conditioning or refrigeration purposes. The main concern is the reduction of the vibration (noise) caused during the operation of the compressor. Vibration is a main concern when the compressor is shifted from the one-cylinder operation to the two-cylinder operation mode and the reverse of this shift. The objectives for this research are (1) to investigate the shaking force due to the reciprocating mass at high frequencies, which are up to 4600 Hz (80w) in this research; (2) to determine the dominant force for compressor vibration among the three possible sources of shaking force due to reciprocating mass, impact forces due to clearance at the connecting rod - piston joint, and the z-axis force from the motor torque due to the rotor's conductor rods being skewed at an angle; (3) to minimize the difference in change of kinetic energies when switching between the one- and two-cylinder operating modes of the compressor. The properties of the vibration in one- and two-cylinder operation have been studied and results have been analyzed in terms of kinetic energies generated in different setting of operation of the compressor. Dynamic simulation for the impact force is computed using SIMULINK. The Z-axis force due to the motor is computed. Results indicated that shaking force due to the reciprocating mass is the dominant force for only the first two harmonics (w, 2w). An optimization routine based on Hooke and Jeeves pattern search method is developed and an optimized setting of angle, force, and torque for balancing of the crankshaft to achieve objective (3) is determined.

This dissertation presents a retractable mechanism design of pedal crank for bicycle. It allows the length of the crank to be variable according the crank angular position in order to achieve efficient transmission. We model the bicycle and the rider’s leg as a five-bar linkage with revolute joints only, and derive the related equations for kinematic and force analysis. By taking into account the location of the human lower limb geometry and the ability of applying force of thigh, the optimum crank length for each crank position is obtained. Then, the required cam mechanism is designed according the obtained variable crank lengths. . The 3D model of this design has been constructed via Pro / Engineer Wildfire 3.0 software. The simulation has also been performed to check for interference. Then, the strength analysis is done by using ANSYS Workbench 11.0 software to verify the strength of this design. Finally, a prototype of this design has been fabricated and installed in a bicycle to confirm its feasibility.

Abstract In this study, the application of slider – crank mechanism in lifting a weight is discussed. During the mechanism design stage, the effects of significant factors on mechanical performance should be studied. By computer aided software and mechanism theory, the mechanical behaviors can be predicted in advance to improve the design accuracy. The position, velocity, and acceleration analysis of each link are performed to predict the mechanism behavior of the slider-crank system. Then the dynamical analysis is carried out to solve the reaction force and torque on each link. The required horse power of motor can be estimated by the driving force. The feasible procedures to design a mechanism system is proposed to solve several practical problems.

The object of this thesis is to design nonlinear controllers for the slider-crank mechanism, which is driven by a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous servo motor. First, the dynamic equation of motion of the motor-slider-crank coupled system is derived by Hamilton's principle and Lagrange multiplier method. Then, an adaptive controller and a sliding mode controller are designed to enhance the robustness of the coupled system with regard to external load disturbance and plant parameter variations. Finally, numerical simulation and experimental results are presented to show that the proposed nonlinear controllers are suitable to apply in the motor-slider-crarik coupled system with good tracking performance.

A compliant mechanism achieves its movement via the expansion of flexible segments or the distortion of one portion of the materials employed. However, repeating the deformation of materials in compliant mechanisms causes a serious problem that has not been considered in previous work. A number of viable configurations were investigated herein, based on the Finite Element Method to carry out the comparison of convergence stress on each model, in order to select one configuration. The comparison technique is then combined with optimization to obtain the configuration with improved performance. From this configuration, a prototype was generated and tested. The testing result showed that the compliant crank-slider mechanism indicated displacement, as well as characteristics similar to the model prediction. This thesis offers directions for further work by incorporating a compliant crank-slider mechanism into electrical contacts called constant-force electrical contacts.

This thesis presents a novel variable-length crank mechanism design intended for application on a bicycle. Based on an effective and laborsaving foot-peddling path, the intuitively simple design allows for simple installation and energy conservation. The variable lengths of the pedal crank are obtained by considering the pedal force from the human foot at different configurations during peddling. The resulting lengths corresponding to the angular position of each crank are too complicated to design a simple mechanism. Therefore, an approximated elliptical curve is adopted for the design. An elliptic trammel mechanism is then applied to this desired device for efficient pedaling. Solidworks software was used to model and create the dynamic stimulation of this novel design. The preliminary result has confirmed its feasibility.

This research experimentally studies the heat transfer of heat sink with oscillating foil actuated with linkage. The experiments were conducted in a rectangular duct. The linkage which is driven by motor results in oscillation of foil in the duct. The induced air flow in the duct causes forced convective heat transfer on heat sink. Five angular amplitudes, four oscillating frequencies, and three foil lengths are employed to measure the averaged velocity at the inlet and the junction temperature of the heating surface. The air flow and heat transfer performance are analyzed with the measured data. In addition, the flow structures were recorded and observed with high speed digital camera and smoke.

The kinematic and dynamic formulations of a spatial slider-crank mechanism shall be redefined by simply geometric constraints in this study. The governing equations, formulated by the Hamilton principle and partitioning method, include effects of mass, external force, reducing gear box and motor electric input. In order to verify the perfection of geometric modeling, the simulated software-MSC. VisualNastran 4D is adopted in contrast with the numerical analysis of kinematics. Furthermore, the integral variable structure control (IVSC) is employed to execute the velocity and position controls. Numerical results show that the accuracy of kinematic analysis, and the good performance of IVSC robust against to the parameter variation and external disturbance.

This paper investigates kinematic and dynamic analyses of an intermittent slider-crank mechanism which consists of four parts: crank, pneumatic cylinder, slider and two stops at both ends of the stroke. When the crank rotates continuously, the slider contacts with the stops and the pneumatic cylinder is compressed or extended. Meanwhile, a manipulator attached at the slider can operate upward or downward. The motions of the intermittent slider-crank mechanism could be divided into three stages, and be formulated by Hamilton’s principle. In order to compare the operating performance of the motor-mechanism coupled system, the PM synchronous servomotor with the integral variable structure control (IVSC) and separately excited DC motor taken as actuators are investigated. Finally, by using Runge-Kutta method, the transient amplitudes are obtained and compared with the traditional slider-crank mechanism.

High speed is an important issue in the semiconductor processing equipment. As usual, the chip needed to be transferred frequently in the semiconductor back-end processing. In recent years, the Pick & Place Machine (PPM) has been widely applied to automation equipments and press fabrication industries, especially in semiconductor IC packaging process because it could satisfy the requirements. Die bonding is a very important process of IC packaging. The quality of IC packaging depends on the speed, accuracy, and precision of the pick and place process. Therefore, a pick and place device is always necessary to hit the target of accurate transmission at the shortest time. One of the most important and common mechanisms is the crank-rocker. It is found in pumps, compressors, steam engines, feeders, crushers, etc. Specially, It is very useful to perform the function of pick and place used in die-bonding system in semiconductor fabrication. In this research, the author has cooperated with the professional IC package equipment manufacturer, 3S Silicon Tech., Inc. The purpose of this research is to propose a mechanical design, kinematic, dynamic analysis and measure the vibration for a crank-rocker pick and place mechanism (PPM), which is applied to a die-bonding system.

In this thesis, the vibration analysis of slider-crank mecha- nism with a flexible connecting rod is studied. The equations of motion of Timoshenko beam and its corresponding boundary conditi- ons are developed by Hamilton's principle, which are transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations by using of finite element method. The realistic operation condition is that the cr- ank rotates, and the end of connecting rod moves reciprocally wi- th slider along the horizontal guide. The geometric constraint of the end of connecting rod is derived and introduced into the equ- ations of motion and boundary conditons. It is found that the bo- undary condition of the connecting rod moving with slider is the moving boundary supports, but not the simply supported ones assu- med in all references. Finally, the Runge-Kutta numerical method is applied to obtain the transient amplitudes which are compared with those of considering the flexible rod to be Euler beam or assuming the ends of connecting rod to be simply supported. Fur- thermore, the harmonic balance method is used to obtain the steaty-state solutions of the system.

CORBA applications can transparently use services running on the client’s machine, on the local-area network, or across the Internet. Standard CORBA services help the application locate service instances, but do not provide a mechanism to identify service instance that will give good performance. The LBBroker we present in the thesis act as an extended location service. It probes and uses the weights vector to evaluate probe results then selects the services that will give optimal performance. Test with a distributed MD-Calculation application show that service instance chosen by LBBroker give better performance than service instances chosen by round-robin or random selection in local-area network and Internet environments.

The static balancing mechanism is a mechanism, which balances the weight of objects via springs. Such as supporting frames and surgical lights, SCM is broadly applied to support and pick-and-place objects. To ensure the safety of the objects in manufacture process, the static balancing mechanism can be balanced at arbitrary rest configuration and moves objects stably without aids of actuators. The design of SCM can be separated into two sections, the configuration synthesis and the spring-design. Since there is no systematic procedure about the configuration synthesis, the configuration is always four-bar parallelogram mechanism. A systematic design procedure for one-dof four- and six-link static balancing mechanisms is developed in this study. Structural characteristics for the two-link static balancing mechanism are investigated, from which general structural characteristics for up-to-six link static balancing mechanisms can be generated. According to these structural characteristics, an atlas of valid configurations for up-to-six link static balancing mechanisms is obtained. It will be shown that a static balancing mechanism can be synthesized by connecting multiple one-dof static balancing mechanisms to adapt to versatile design requirements. It is believed that the proposed approach provides better physical comprehension in the design process and is beneficial to extent the application of static balancing mechanisms.

In distributed computing systems, load balancing is one of the most important factors that affect the system performance. In this thesis a sender-initiated dynamic load balancing policies in a distributed computing system has been proposed. There are four policies consisted in the proposed load balancing mechanism. For the transfer policy, instead of defining a fixed threshold value in the traditional load balancing policies, we are applying the extension set theory and using the average response time of jobs as a factor to create an adaptive threshold value which is calculated by relational function of average response time, for determining that a new arriving job should be migrated or not. In addition to the transfer policy, bypass-transfer method is used in the location policy. Jobs that need to be migrated do not need to be transferred to central node first, but are transferred to destination node directly, so as to reduce the communication costs. In our information policy, once a job is completed in a node, the information including the response time of the job and the number of jobs in the queue will be sent to master node. For selection policy, the new arriving job is selected for migrating, if migration is needed. In order to make the system more reliable, a template queue is added at the master node of the system to reduce the job arrival failure. A simulation model has been built for evaluating the performance of the system. Comparing with other load balancing mechanisms, such as RT and ALBCII algorithms, the simulation results show that a better performance can be achieved by the proposed mechanism.

In the era of Big Data, many data analytics applications rely on parallel and distributed computing to process massive amounts of data. MapReduce is a parallel processing framework with strengths such as simple operation, high fault tolerance, and high scalability, which has been widely used in big data processing in recent years. There are several open-source software packages using MapReduce, with Hadoop being the most prominent. However, data skew is a frequent problem when MapReduce is used to handle data-intensive applications. The primary cause of data skew is an uneven distribution of data, e.g., when a dataset presents a Zipf distribution. When the default hash partitioning function in Hadoop processes such datasets, the workload cannot be evenly distributed to each reducer under most circumstances. As the workload is unequally distributed between different reducers, the amount of data input through network transmission cannot be reduced as much as it could have been under ideal circumstances. To mitigate the negative effects of data skew on the performance of MapReduce, this study divides the above-mentioned problem into two scenarios, where each scenario has its own objective. This paper proposes a priority-based load balancing mechanism which combines reservoir sampling, the two-phase greedy algorithm, and an algorithm for splitting reduce keys, and further incorporates the concepts of data locality and priority, to achieve the objectives of the previously mentioned scenarios. The proposed mechanism is implemented as follows: the data distribution of the dataset is first obtained using data sampling, followed by considerations on the number of occurrences of each reduce key and the amount of data distributed to each data node. Finally, all the reduce keys are assigned to a suitable reducer one by one for processing. The results of this experiment demonstrate that the proposed priority-based load balancing mechanism can effectively reduce the amount of data input through network transmission to each reducer. More importantly, this mechanism balances the workload of each reducer, and the resulting execution time is significantly shorter than that of the default hash partitioning function in Hadoop.

In order to provide large bisection bandwidth, data center networks employ multi-rooted topologies (e.g., Leaf Spine, Fat Tree). There are multiple paths can be used between any two hosts. Therefore, data center needs a good load balancing mechanism to utilize the available bandwidth. Recent state-of-art load balancing mechanisms only load balance traffic among all the shortest paths. These mechanisms only perform effectively when the topology is symmetric. If there are link failures occurred in the network, the number of shortest paths diminished. Using these mechanisms might cause unnecessary bandwidth reduced. This thesis presents CACOM, a congestion-aware load balancing with compensatory mechanism. The compensatory mechanism will be activated when there are link failures in the network. This mechanism increases the bandwidth by using both shortest path and non-shortest path. The compensatory mechanism can increase the bandwidth between switches and reduce the flow completion time of the flows in the network.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to investigate the balance and application of slider-crank mechanism and multi-cylinder engines. At first, the shaking force and shaking moment of slider-crank mechanism and multi-cylinder engines are derived. Then, the balance of multi-cylinder engines is investigated and discussed. Furthermore, the dynamic force analysis of slider-crank mechanism for press is performed for different eccentricities and gravity force directions, and the optimum transmission angle of working stroke is obtained by optimization. Finally, the coupler point of gear-slider-crank mechanism that can generate the elliptical or straight-line coupler curves is derived and animated. The result of this paper is benefit to the design of slider-crank mechanism and its applications, such as engines, compressors, presses, and other automation machines etc.

In this thesis, the dynamic behavior of slider-crank mechanism with a crack in the flexible linkage is studied. The crank of the system is assumed to be rigid and the flexible linkage is modeled as a Timoshenko beam. The crack in the flexible linkage is modeled as a transverse open crack whose local flexibilities are calculated by using a fracture mechanics approach and the Castigliano’s theorem. The finite element method and Hamiltion’s principle are employed to derive the equations of motion of the system. Dynamic responses are obtained by using the Runge-Kutta method. Influences on dynamic response of the system due to different depths and locations of the crack on flexible linkage are investigated.

Slider-crank mechanisms are widely used for industrial equipment. If the dynamic balance is designed for a machine, then the operational condition will be more stable. In general, the dynamic balance design methods are weight balance techniques, but these techniques will increase the weight and applied load of the desired machine. The purpose of this work is to use the vector loop and speed function design approaches for improving the motion and dynamic (shaking force and shaking moment) characteristics. First, we analyze the motion and dynamic characteristics of a given slider-crank mechanism. Secondly, we design a continuous speed function and chose the design parameters of the design function for improving the motion and dynamic characteristics.

Abstract Considering a crank-slider mechanism, the analysis of the longitudinal and transverse vibration of the cracked flexible connecting rod is analyzed in this study. First of all, the connecting rod is assumed as the Euler’s beam, then the equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton’s principle. Moreover, by using the Galerkin method with mode shape function that satisfies the boundary conditions, the equations of motion are reduced to the Mathieu equations. And then, Runge-Kutta method is employed to determine the transient amplitude, some parameters, such as the ratio ( ) of rotating angular velocity of the crank to natural frequency of transverse vibration for the link without crack, the ratio ( ) of the crank length to connecting rod length, and the ratio (a / R) of crack depth to radius of link, influence the amplitude. The results reveal that the natural frequency of connecting rod is not influenced by the angular velocity. While the ratio of the crank length to connecting rod length increases, the transient transverse amplitude increases, too. The ratio of crack depth increases, the transverse amplitude increases a little.

In this thesis, we propose a load balancing mechanism to reduce the handoff frequency based on mobility of hierarchical mobile Internet version 6 (HMIPv6). We apply history-based mobility strategy to allow a mobile node (MN) to select the suitable mobility anchor point (MAP) in HMIPv6. The proposal also can decentralize the traffic concentration within the same layer MAP domain. In the first instance, we would like to apply the MN’s mobile history for the criterion of selecting proper MAP in the densely meshed tree topology. Furthermore, we organize border adjacent MAPs which in the same layer into the virtual domain. By informing the border adjacent MAPs about the virtual domain, the load sharing is acceptable. Therefore, we can focus handoff on MN’s mobile history and reach to load balancing management. The contributions in this thesis are as follows: (1)MN can move seamless by estimative handoff frequency and applying mobile history. (2)By employing the virtual domain, load sharing can be implemented in the same layer of hierarchy to achieve load balancing. As expected, HMIPv6 will be employed in the future. We trust that The result of our research in this thesis will be much helpful to improve the load balancing and handoff frequency in the HMIPv6.

The characteristics of linkage balancing mechanism is first discussed on the base of Newton’s 2nd Law. Employing the Equivalent Mass Inertia method to model the balancing force of the linkage balancing mechanism. To synthesize the dimensions of the balancing mechanism by 2 precision toggle positions synthesis theory, establish the solution line, show the distribution of the solutions. Find the suitable dimensions for balancing mechanism within the solution line that satisfied the dynamic characteristic of design requirement. The study utilizes the computer-aided method to analyze the motion of the balancing mechanism, plot the curve of dynamic forces, establish the solution line and choose the right solution. At last, design a set of dimensions of balancing mechanism as a balancer for a press machine.
