Full textToday's career choices and ambitions impose different demands on the individuals than in the past. In a labour market that demands flexibility and responsibility, the individuals are expected to be able to work almost anytime and from anywhere. These factors have contributed to an imbalance between work and family life that can trigger various forms of illness. In this study, I investigate how parents of young children perceive their mental health in relation to the balance between work and family life. This is achieved through a study that employs qualitative methods and data collection based on six individual semi-structured interviews, where the material is then analysed based on a manifest content analysis. The results show that today’s parents are well aware of the imbalance between their work and family life, and that this negatively affects their health in several ways, ranging from stress and anxiety to sleep problems and personal conflicts. To address this imbalance the parents creates routines, shared responsibilities at home, and allow personal time for leisure, in an attempt to create a form of control over this imbalance. The conclusion of this study is that parent’s experience that they have to have routines at work and family life, where the parents have lower demands on their own health.

Full textThe audit profession is characterized by high staff turnover, where a significant number of employees quit after a few years and before they have written the authorization test. Some of the reasons as to why young auditors choose to remain are materialistic rewards and recognition on performed tasks. Among experienced auditors’ choices to quit, there is the inability for work-life balance. Prior research has been conducted on what motivates younger auditors. However, there is a lack of what factors auditors with family value to remain in the profession. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about what motivates auditors with family to remain in auditing despite high workload. In the study, factors are presented that auditors with family value and that makes them stay within the profession. Ten qualitative interviews were conducted with auditors who have worked for at least three years and have family. Respondents from both Big 4-firms and smaller firms have participated to find out whether their perspectives differ depending on agency size. The study shows that factors that auditors with family primarily value are their colleagues, that they have challenging tasks, responsibilities and flexibility. Furthermore, flexibility is a factor that is important for enabling a functioning family life. Salary is another factor that auditors with family value, however to a lesser extent. The high workload of the audit profession during busy season is appreciated among auditors with family, as they prefer the intensity and when there are multiple things to do rather than during the low season. In the past decade, the audit firms and managers have changed towards further promoting work-life balance. The audit firms have promoted such a balance through mail and activities that focus on family life, while the managers have promoted this by discussing the family life of the employees during personal meetings with them. In order to further enable work-life balance among the employees, the audit firms should promote this together with the managers. This since the study shows that the managers can influence and motivate the employees, upon which it has a greater effect rather than if only the audit firms try to promote such a balance.

Full textDuring the last decade a great change has occurred in families attitude towards work. The traditional working day of 8-hours is no longer the norm, and the emerging information and communication technology allows an employee to get access to all work 24/7. One consequence of these changes is that the demand for family related and household services has increased for both men and women. The report has shown research and studies indicating that the negative effects that a not functional work-life balance entails, both the negative consequences for workers and employers. It is therefore important that employers allow employees work-life balance to function. The report has shown two models, shaped to give employers options to help their employees work-life balance resulting in have a successful business. The first model, model 1, is a direct model for the employer based on being able to integrate work and family by having an employee nanny in the business building. The second model, model 2, is an indirect model where the company is sponsoring recourses that would help families with the unpaid work at home and give the employee the option of deciding them self in how work-life balance can be improved even if it does not include the everyday combination with the children The report shows that model 1 with the nanny can offer a great addition to the pre-school 'early' closing times, less stress and more family time for workers. The model, however, offers a narrow solution alternative to a small audience. Model 2 can, however, offer an improved balance to a wider audience where employees can both get more time with family and help at home, which enables a better balance between work and family. The model can however be considered a expensive solution for many companies. Model 1 is best suited to companies where many employees have children and where employees regularly work at the company. Model 2 is best suitable in companies where employees often work at another location and where employees have difficulty in getting the children to work. A survey was done to investigate the two models' theory of requirement image for suitability and the employees interest for the models. Our survey was sent to a management company and the results prove the theories about the requirement image of each model and that the company would be best off with model 2 because employees are often at the customer. The report notes that the two models may offer a good alternative solution to the symptoms, but the real problem is the working times. In most industries in Sweden employees must be, in principle, constantly reachable, something employers and employees must accept if industries are to compete in the global market with a variety of low-wage countries (eg China and India). If Sweden wants to remain competitive in a globalized world knowledge, efficiency and creativity are our best weapons. Therefore must Swedish employers ensure that employees have a functional work-life balance so that we may remain more effective and creative and therefore being competitive globally.

Full textTitle: The impact of salary model's on real estate agents balance between family and work. Level: Bachelor Thesis in Business Administration C, 15.0 hp. Author: Desiree Apell och Liza Malmqvist Supervisor: Maria Fregidou - Malama, Ernst Hollander and Pär Vilhelmson Date: 2014 – may Aim: The aim of this study was to explain how real estate agents experienced their pay model affecting their balance between family and work and in what extent they felt their pay model being stressful or motivating. Furthermore, the aim of this study was partially to validate an emerging theory by answering whether gender, career aspirations and parenthood-affected real estate agents balance between family and work. Method: We did a quantitative research by using mail surveys. Result & Conclusions: If the respondents felt motivated by their pay model, then they did not experience the salary model was affecting their balance between family and work, however, they experienced balance in life. Flexible working hours could contribute work-life balance to the respondents. Individuals, who experienced stress, also experienced that their pay model was affecting their balance between life and work. They also experienced that they did not have balance between family and work. Suggestions for future research: To be able to determine if this study is credible and generalizable, this study's purpose and research questions need further research. Flexible work should be studied further to determine whether it contributes real estate’s balance between family and work. Contribution of the thesis: Based on this study, this study can inspire the franchisees or executives in the real estate industry to design more stable and better conditions for their employees.

Full textIn the following essay, we examine managers’ experiences about Work-life balance, the balance between work and private life. The topic is relevant in today’s society where an increasing amount of people end up in a field of tension between devoting time to both career and family. Furthermore, it is a relevant topic in the guise of changes at the labor market by increased pace and new flexible work forms, which may cause difficulties for individuals to create a satisfactory balance. The study's purpose is to gain an understanding of municipal managers’ experience of the balance between work and private life, and immerse ourselves in the way they separates the work from the privacy. Based on the study´s purpose and research questions, we conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with eight managers in a local municipal organization. The material has been transcribed and analyzed by coding. The results are presented by following themes; Balance between work and private life, Flexibilities impact on balance and the balance impact on well-being. In summary, the results of the study shows that municipal managers experience that balance primarily involves being able to combine work and family life in a satisfactory way. However, the managers of this study generally felt difficulties in finding this sort of balance, and to separate their work from their private life. Several managers experience that an imbalance affects their wellbeing negatively. Managers did however emphasis that flexibility in work forms could be an opportunity to partially facilitate the creation of balance. Finally, we have discussed the result in relation to theories of work-life balance and previous research in the area.

Full textWork-life balance, the balance between work and private life, has been interesting researchers over the last decades, and several studies has been conducted in the field. Different perspectives have been considered, both individual and organizational. This study highlights the patterns and factors that affect managers' work-life balance. The study is based on 14 qualitative semi-structured interviews with managers in different industries. The interviews covered the managers’ experiences of work-life balance and a thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The results show that managers experience a relatively high level of work-life balance, but the balance seems to fluctuate in periods of stress and high workload. The study finds no clear gender differences regarding the managers’ way of creating balance. Although the respondents raise their attention to the issue regarding women’s double workload, both at work and at home. Finally, it can be noted that the nature of the tasks, the flexible working hours, the ability to set limits between the life domains, the conflict between different roles, as well as social support, and the demands the managers face are the factors that influence the balance between work and private life the most.
