Abstract:
The focus on this paper is to show the values of the tenses and the modality morphemes in the Balanta language. The Balanta is a language spoken between Casamance, South of Senegal, and Geba River, north of Guinea-Bissau. The Balanta is an Atlantic language of the Niger-Congo branch, of which Fufulde, Wolof, Diola, Serer, Temne are among the most spoken. The Balanta is located in the north branch, in the group called Bak, togheter with Diola, Mandyak, Mankanya and Papel. The verbal paradigm of Balanta presents the following tenses and modality morphemes: {-Æ} present, remote past, future, change of stage, deictic, conclusive, inconclusive, the last four morphemes are used to express the attitude of the speaker in relation to the propositional content or in relation to the truth of the statement, or in relation to the listener. The morpheme {-Æ} present, in accordance with the verbal paradigm and the kind of verb, present values such as present and past in the perfective, present or future in the imperfective; the modality morphemes, in accordance with the verbal paradigm and the kind of verb, present values such as change of stage and interruption action, closing action in the time and certitude, no action closing and incertitude

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation aspire to characterize the "Balanta Mané/Bejja" identity, which has been in constant reconstruction, including their ethno-politics dimension, cultural and religious matrix, and its fluidity over time and space. Historically, the presence of Islam, in particular the one disseminate by the "Màndinka, contributed to build up their identity, based on their opposition or resistance: "bàlan". The "Balanta" define themselves as "those who refuse" : in "absentia" of a specific identity, this operates as an identity label. The ancient history and the most recent conflicts have led the "Bejaa" to shape and develop their identity "on the border" between the Casamance and the north of Guinea-Bissau. The ongoing "mandinguization", present in this region for more than a century, affects both the "Bejaa" converted to Islam and the "Bejaa" pagan, and entails the reconstruction of the socio-cultural, political and religious institutions. Their identity strategies, collective and individuals, as well as their various form of resistance (for instance, the women's ones), when faced with the diffusion of Islam (disseminated by the religious brotherhoods, Marabous, or Muslim reformists) are other elements of their "plasticity" which reveals the "local construction" of the "ajaa" identity

In the first part, the pressureless gas dynamic system with source (body force) is examined and solved by using Shadow Waves. The source represents gravity and Shadow Wave solution (containing the delta function) shows acceleration (contrary to shocks, for example). In the second part, one will nd numerical calculations that conrms the above results.

Abstract:
This study, with an annexe, is a reflection on the approach of aphasic subject, in his medical and rehabilitation contexts, from the very start of the diagnosis of his language disturb: the aphasia, or the loss of the acquired language, is generally a syndrome of adult subject. Based on the fundamentals of philosophy, the initial reflection evokes the difficulty of a homogeneous and satisfactory ethics, during the complex medical and paramedical course of this kind of patient, pointing some specific obstacles in the medical, psychological ethics or in the ethics of education. Then, a brief definition of the neuropsychology of language is followed by a presentation of the aphasia, a comment leaned on a mixed aphasia case study, containing a familial and a medical anamneses (Narrative medicine) and a neuropsychological balance assessment (narrative also), focused on the language, witch tends to show that, in a more or less diffuse way, the aphasic subject suffers from a lack of homogeneity on the set or part of the care chain, till the end of the long period of his language rehabilitation (at least three years), when his mother tongue became foreign language. The didactics of the languages, six-thousand-years-old, and its short history is briefly explained; it is the teaching aids proposed for the rehabilitation: the tutorage is especially conceived and adapted to the subject, showing the interest of the field of humanities and social sciences, in a course of care. The care takes into account the psychological state of the patient, his profoundly bruised identity, the neuropsychological balance assessment and the balance assessment of language. Finally, this study suggests the reality of the multidisciplinary field of medical ethics in the field of aphasiology. It expresses a synergy where the position of psychologist, neuropsychologist or speech pathologist, linguist, educationalist language can join

Abstract:
Women are twice as likely as men to become depressed. While they seek help for mental disorders more often than men, they also seek to help others, trying to keep everyone happy while taking care of parents, spouses, and children. Sometimes, doing it all is doing too much. In Finding Your Emotional Balance, Dr. Merry Noel Miller offers women of all ages advice for coping with life’s challenges while increasing its joys. Drawing on her three decades of experience as a psychiatrist specializing in women’s mental health―as well as her own personal struggles with depression and grief―she explains the special vulnerabilities and strengths of women during adolescence, the childbearing years, menopause, and late in life. Dr. Miller opens each chapter with stories about women who are dealing with issues related to their stage in life. She discusses common mental disorders in the context of life stages, exploring the symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, and unresolved grief. She also offers a variety of remedies, suggesting medical and non-medical approaches to finding emotional balance even in the most stressful times. Each chapter ends with a list of suggested readings and websites.

The thesis analyzes the characteristic compensation strategies, which areobserved to be often applied by men. Based on the analysis benefits anddisadvantages each of the strategies are defined. After that, the taskprioritization framework is shown, which enables simultaneous realiztation ofmultiple tasks. In order to include different tasks and constraints in theframework, the formal way of their notation is developed. Special attention isgiven to the constraints that arise as a consequence of contacts with theenvironment. Methodology for determining whether some of the existingcontacts can be broken, but that the desired movement is feasible, andwhether is it necessary to establish a new contact for the realization of theintended movement. By including the constraints in the task prioritizationframework, methodology for modification of the movement in the presence ofconstraints is obtained.

Abstract:
Research of hydrogen application are quite new in clinical conditions, however theefficiency of molecular hydrogen in previous clinical studies is evident. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the effect of supplementation with hydrogen rich water (HRW)on baseline oxidative stress parameters in elite male judokas. Experimental treatment wascarried out in two phases. In the first phase, experimental group (N=6) weresupplemented daily with HRW (4g) for 28 days, while the control group (N=6) was usedplacebo. After supplementation intake all subjects had "washout" period for 28 days, afterwhich the same protocol was repeated for a period of 28 days. In the second stage ofexperimental treatment, acute effects of supplementation with molecular hydrogen onacid base balance of elite female judokas were examined. In this phase of the study, subjects from experimental group (N=4) were supplemented daily with HRW (4g), whilethe control group (N=4) used placebo. After supplementation all subjects had a"washout" period for a 4 days, after which the same protocol was repeated wherein themembers of the experimental group (N=4) used placebo, while the control group (N=4)was supplemented daily with HRW. The results of analyzed antioxidant enzymes activityin placebo and HRW group indicated on the occurrence of statistically significantdifferences in antioxidant status of elite judo athletes. Obtained results indicate thatresponse of the body due to intake HRW is reflected in increasing levels of SOD andGSH due to the implementation of programmed physical activity. Also, trend of MDAdecreasing in HRW group was detectable. In addition, application of HRW did not causenegative changes in the biochemical and hematological parameters. Acute effects ofsupplementation were affected to a statistically significant reduction in lactateaccumulation and pH increase after applied special judo fitness test (SJFT) on the topjudoka. However, use of supplements had no significant effect on improving performancein elite judokas. Obtained results confirm ergogenic antioxidant power of molecularhydrogen, wherein further studies are necessary in order to adjust the conditions in whichmolecular hydrogen will exerted its maximum in sport.

Literacy & Learners
Ph.D.
This study reports on the impact of the Authorial Empathy Scale (AES), a tool designed to measure responses to literature that balance attention both to authors’ aesthetic choices and to empathetic engagement with the narrative world, on teachers’ instructional practices and students’ written and spoken responses. The research is guided by the following research questions: (1) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape the teaching practice of two secondary ELA teachers? (2) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape secondary students’ responses to texts? Data consist of stimulated-recall interviews and discussion transcripts of teachers and students that were analyzed for the goals, tools, and sources of their decisions. The major findings are the use of the AES seemed to facilitate a common approach among teachers and students for generating more balanced responses to texts. However, sustaining the balanced responses faced challenges in the form of institutional rubrics, IRE discussion patterns, and the specific demands of writing tasks. Students who evidenced greater mastery of the conventions of academic writing tended to generate more authorially empathetic responses to texts. During the Authorial Empathy unit, students tended to engage in more extensive and collaborative talk turns during discussion. The results make clear the importance for teachers to select texts, tasks, and tools that support the use of the AES in guiding students to respond with authorial empathy.

Camacho, Sally A. "The Struggle that ESL Teachers in the USVI Face with ELLs Not Passing the Smarter Balanced Assessment." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10936528.

Full text
Abstract:

In St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands (USVI), the growing population of English language learners (ELLs) are expected to meet the standards of the Smarter Balanced assessment and take the test during their first year of school on the island. However, meeting the accountability measures while acquiring academic language proficiency is overwhelming. The lack of language proficiency in English prevents ELLs from achieving academic success in high-stakes standardized testing. For this reason, it was necessary to study this phenomenon. This study addressed the problem of educational policies concerning strategies to help ELLs to demonstrate success on standardized assessments (Modiga, 2013). Results will give leaders and teachers a voice regarding ways to improve practices to assist ELLs on standardized assessments. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the struggle of ESL teachers in the USVI to meet not only the language needs of ELLs but also the requirements for them to pass the Smarter Balanced assessment in the St. Croix School District. Eight themes emerged from the data analysis: lack of professional development (PD), language support, commonly used assessments, language proficiency, cultural diversity, language background experience and expectations, district and school-wide initiatives, and lack of understanding how to meet the provisions of the constructivism theory or ESSA. The first recommendation is to extend the scope of the research to involve more mainstream middle school teachers across the USVI who also serve ELLs and must prepare them for the Smarter Balanced assessment. The second recommendation is to identify instructional practices that can best meet the needs of ELLs in content-area classes in the USVI. The third recommendation is to compare the perceptions of best practices of mainstream teachers from two districts in the USVI, one not making statistically significant gains with ELLs and the other making statistically substantial gains on the Smarter Balanced assessment. The last recommendation is to conduct a study in the USVI on the alignment of the core curriculum with English language proficiency and Common Core State Standards with mainstream teachers using ESL strategies to serve ELLs’ language needs to see if there is improvement on standardized test scores.

Mayrhofer, Sonja Nicole. "The body (un)balanced : humoral theory and late medieval literature." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6203.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation examines late medieval literature through the lens of medical history, especially humoral psychology. Although the humors are still of interest to the history of medicine, they are often overlooked in current literary criticism. My project examines how the humors influenced representations of bodies in medieval literary texts (St. Erkenwald, Chaucer's Franklin's Tale, Richard Coer de Lyon, and Marie de France's Yonec). In chapters exploring the connection between the humors and religious devotion, marriage, cannibalism, and shape-shifting, I show that humoral psychology was not just a medical theory known to medieval medical practitioners, but also a deeply influential cosmology for the literary representation of bodies and emotions. I approach this project from two angles, using a methodology that relies on textual analysis and cultural contextualization. My work also aligns itself with scholars who have explored early modern works through the lens of historical phenomenology (Smith, Paster, Floyd-Wilson, Rowe). The project moreover encourages and contributes to the dialogue between the humanities and sciences in general and literature and medicine more specifically, as it makes connections to medical theories post-Descartes (Damasio) and to current scholarship regarding non-Western medical practices (Horden; Hsu) that discuss debates about balancing emotions and locating those emotions within the physical body. My project thus provides an analytical approach for interpreting medieval literature via medical models while also showing what the medieval period can contribute to the ongoing work of assessing the role of emotions in the past and its continued resonance in current medical debates.

Learning a new language means making use, more or less consciously, of the sphere ofproximity between the target linguistic system and the other languages. This proximitystimulates some transfers between the linguistic systems, thus acquiring either a positive or anegative value within interlanguage. This one is considered the third language system developedby the learner, being different from the source language and the target language. We focus onthese transfers and on their influence over interlanguage, in the case of the Romanian learnersstudying French as a foreign language, but also Italian and Spanish. The data analysis enables us, on the one hand, to give an account of the connectionexisting between the conformity to the norm and the complexity of interlanguage and, on theother hand, to ascertain the role of both positive and negative linguistic transfers against thesetwo dimensions of interlanguage (the complexity and the conformity)

Abstract:

Research affirmed that instructional strategies that promote English Language Learners’ (ELLs) Academic Language Proficiency (ALP) are essential in the primary grades for ELLs to succeed in school. This quantitative causal-comparative study relied on the premise of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and addressed to what extent Balanced Math instruction affected ELLs’ math performance in Grade 1 and Grade 2, as measured by STAR Math. This study examined the extent differences existed on STAR Math Scores and Student Growth Percentiles of ELLs in Grade 1 and Grade 2 based on exposure to Balanced Math instruction in a rural school district located in the Pacific Northwest. The Mann-Whitney U test examined the extent there were significant differences, p < .05 of the dependent variable, Student Growth Percentile, based on exposure to Balanced Math instruction. The results of the Mann-Whitney U were not statistically significant, U = 1034.50, p = .062, and the null hypothesis could not be rejected. ANOVA assessed if there were significant differences based on the alpha level p < .05 of the dependent variable, STAR Math Scaled Scores, based on exposure to Balanced Math instruction. The results of the ANOVA were not statistically significant, F (1,114) = 0.12, p = .729, &eegr; 2p = 0.00, and the null hypothesis could not be rejected. This study concluded there were no significant differences between ELLs who received Balanced Math instruction and ELLs who did not receive Balanced Math instruction.

Abstract:
Background: Case reports are presented on four Veterans, aged 29–46 years, who complained of chronic dizziness and/or postural instability following blast exposures. Two of the four individuals were diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury and three of the four were exposed to multiple blasts. Comprehensive vestibular, balance, gait, audiometry and neuroimaging procedures were used to characterize their injuries.Case report: Vestibular assessment included videonystagmography, rotary chair and cervical and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. Balance and gait testing included the sensory organization test, preferred gait speed and the dynamic gait index. Audiometric studies included pure tone audiometry and middle-ear measurements. Neuroimaging procedures included high resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging, susceptibility-weighted imaging and diffusion-tensor imaging.Findings: Based on the neuroimaging and vestibular and balance test results, it was found that all individuals had diffuse axonal injuries and all had one or more micro-hemorrhages or vascular anomalies. Three of the four individuals had abnormal vestibular function, all had abnormally slow walking speeds and two had abnormal gait and balance dysfunction. Conclusion: The use of contemporary neuroimaging studies in conjunction with comprehensive vestibular and balance assessment provided a better understanding of the pathophysiology and pathoanatomy of dizziness following blast exposures than standard vestibular and balance testing alone.

Full text
Abstract:
Part 1 of the thesis, ‘The Balance of Where We Are: A Theory of Composition in Relation to Cognitive Poetics’, considers a compositional theory of poetry, with particular attention to the creative process, the poetic line, and trope. Drawing on from the disciplines of creative writing and cognitive poetics, this thesis asserts basic and important considerations for writing poetry. Chapter One seeks a model for the creative process that will aid in sustaining poetic composition but without dictating a specific method of writing. In presenting several theories of creativity it discusses ways of understanding these mental processes in preparation for the actual poem. It suggests an approach to poetry that will keep the writer focussed and aware of his or her limitations. Chapter Two establishes what it means to be writing poetry in an ‘age of cognitive science’ where some literary scholars have made a ‘cognitive turn’, by explaining the field of cognitive poetics. It considers specifically the cognitive poetics of Reuven Tsur as an important theory to enhance poetic composition. It connects some of Tsur’s discussions on poetic elements to enhance the craft-oriented approach to poetry. Chapter Three examines the poetic line as the basic unit of a poem which any compositional theory must consider. It reiterates the neural theory of the line as a ‘carrier wave’ of conceptual information that is both pleasing to the ear and the mind. It then re- evaluates specific poetic experiments concerning the line, and suggests a method of scanning to help the contemporary reader’s awareness of poetic rhythms. Chapter Four examines trope, specifically poetic metaphor in relation to the assumption of conceptual metaphor theory that poetic metaphors are extensions of everyday metaphors. It welcomes an alternative cognitive-literary explanation by re-iterating metaphor theories from Reuven Tsur and Don Paterson. Finally, it argues that the practitioner is always writing the variation of the ‘one’ poem that he or she has discovered. Part 2 of the thesis, ‘The Secret Uncles: Poems’, consists of my own poems.

Abstract:
This study investigated the effectiveness of the READ 180 balanced literacy program in addressing the problem of low reading achievement among urban minority high school students. Research has shown low reading achievement to negatively impact academic and economic success. Holdaway's theory of natural literacy, which suggests reading instruction should be purposeful and realistic, supports READ 180 as a remedial intervention. The specific purpose of the study was to evaluate READ 180 in relation to improving classroom reading achievement, standardized language arts test scores, and graduation rates among students in a low-income, high-minority urban high school. Subjects were 2 cohorts of students consisting of 619 enrolled in READ 180 during the school year of 2007-2008 and 358 students enrolled in READ 180 during the school year of 2010-2011 at an urban high school in New Jersey. Following a goals-based program evaluation design, a paired difference t test was used to evaluate classroom reading achievement; a chi-square test was used to evaluate graduation rates; and a multiple regression analysis controlling for initial status was used to evaluate performance on the standardized language arts test. Findings indicated moderate improvement in classroom reading achievement, no improvement in graduation rates, and strong improvement in standardized test scores only for English learners. Results suggested that a balanced literacy program such as READ 180 may provide effective reading remediation for English learners in low-income urban areas, thereby promoting social change through increased academic success and upward economic mobility.

Abstract:
This study investigates the use of metaphors in corporate storytelling and the strategies that may be applied when translating these from English to Swedish. The conceptual metaphor theory was used as a starting point for the investigation of structural metaphors in particular. The results reveal that the most common translation strategy was keeping the same conceptual metaphor in the target text. The second most common strategy was changing into a different metaphor. Moreover, metaphors were often omitted which results in a translation with less evocative imagery. The metaphorical concepts organism and building were found to be the most frequent. The weave metaphor was frequent in storytelling, and the organism, building, and machine metaphors were common in business contexts, similar to what earlier studies have found. Some conceptual metaphors were less frequent in the translation due to cultural differences, although both similarities and differences were encountered when analyzing the metaphorical expressions in detail. The study also reveals that an awareness of organizational metaphors is fundamental in order to render an inspirational and persuasive text in this genre as accurately as possible, while at the same time being faithful to the style and imagery in the original.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Education))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
Given that schooling is compulsory and that the quality of literacy instruction that children receive in the primary years lays the foundation for the rest of formal learning, management and teachers are under strong pressure to ensure the improvement of literacy in schools. This study reports on a literacy intervention directed at improving literacy instruction for seventytwo English Additional Language (EAL) learners in grades one to four. The intervention aimed to help teachers maximise teaching time through a theoretically sound approach that balanced language experience, shared and guided reading and writing, and embedded phonics and word level instruction within the context of reading and writing. In doing so, the approach breaks with the traditional position still held by many teachers that learners must first be taught to sound out letters and read words before they can be taught to read and write. Daily features of the literacy programme included whole class shared reading and small group guided reading and writing. Whereas shared reading engaged learners in lively literacy experiences on challenging texts, small group guided reading enabled teachers to match instruction and texts more closely to individual learners' needs. During shared and guided reading sessions, teachers modelled behaviours and strategies on interesting texts, interacted with learners and provided direct instruction in phonics and word level work. Once a week, planned outings and practical activities created opportunities for developing the learners' language and extending their conceptual understandings.

Abstract:

This study investigated the efficacy of the Read 180 program and its impact on upper secondary ELL students participating in the Read 180 program. The targeted population consisted of four 11th and 12 th grade ELL READ 180 students attending a rural school with a school population of 884 students. To assess the effects of the Read 180 program, data was collected in regards to student reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities from the beginning and the end of the 2017–2018 academic school year. Although this study was limited in duration and scope, it clearly shows that the Read 180 program had limited success in regards to student achievement in the areas of reading and writing. In addition, the data shows little to no progress for the target students in regards to listening and speaking. In addition, the study revealed that the students’ lack of a positive attitude in regards to the Read 180 program may have hindered student progress. Based on these findings, some pedagogical and teacher training recommendations are discussed, and a suggestion is included for future research.

The purpose of this work is to identify the occurrence of noises that affect the communication process, with accounting statements working as businesses language within the process of account rendering between the social work entities and the City Hall of the City of Tabo??o da Serra - City Council of Social Work (CMAS) and City Hall of Tabo??o da Serra (PMTS). In order to do that, it is based on studies that suggest the existence of a relationship between the accounting process, as business language, and the communication theory, with emphasis on the noises that may interfere in any communication process. The investigation tries to identify the occurrence of noises according to the perception of the users of accounting statements, issues - social work entities and receivers - CMAS and PMTS. The reason for carrying out this research comes from the study carried out by the Commission of Guidance Analysis and Inspection COAF/CMAS, where it was detected that the majority of the registered entities had their registrations cancelled or suspended because of problems with the account rendering and research carried out at CMAS, where it was observed the difficulty of the CMAS in establishing and maintaining partnerships with the social work entities in the city. The communication theory reveals that, some times, the level of knowledge of the issuer and the receiver, the social and cultural context where both of them are inserted, the channel used, the content of the message are responsible for problems that occur in the communication process. Therefore, this theory establishes parameters to determine if the communicative act takes place efficiently and effectively. As the main purpose of accounting is the supply of useful information for taking decisions, if accounting statements are not understood, it means that noises took place during the process and that the communicative act did not fully take place. In order to avoid or diminish the harmful effects of the noise it is essential to know where and how they take place.
Abstract:

Abstract:
Primena ovakvih alata u malim i srednjim preduzećima bi unapredila i poboljšala njihovo poslovanje.
Measuring innovative activities is important in order to manage and operate the enterprise more effectively. Many tools appeared on the market, but most of them measured the business success based on financial results. The Balanced Scoredcard (BSC) model, however, included all the aspects of the company, not just a financial component, and it was proven to be an effective tool. The emergence of this model created synergy throughout the company, because this model enabled identification of the strategic indicators that the company should achieve in order to improve its business. This paper shows the current situation regarding to innovation and the introduction of innovative activities in business operations in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, but also explores whether the BSC model is applicable for the evaluation and monitoring of innovative activities in enterprises. A modified BSC model with very carefully selected factors with a focus on innovative activities is a good auxiliary tool for measuring and continuously monitoring the performance of the company. The application of such tools in small and medium-sized enterprises would improve their business.

Abstract:
Founded on the body of works by Serbianneosymbolist poets, this monographicpresentation of poetic forms in a particularperiod of Serbian literature is a step toward theevaluation of the form and represents dueacknowledgement of the formalization problemby means of established rules. Studying therepertoire of poetic forms of these poetsbelonging to a modernized tradition, recognizing their form usage, proposingtypological classifications and marking themanners in which they are related to the form(how and to which extent are strict andpredefined rules broken; is there any destructionor stylization of forms) will contribute to thecontinued actualization of the issue of fixedforms. Much has been written on neosymbolistpoets and there are significant texts in whichtheir poetics is interpreted. Nevertheless, it hasnever been researched which poetic forms areused and how, nor has there ever been anycomparative analysis of specific techniques ofall the poets within this orientation. Somepoems of these poets can only be recognized asexamples in the papers systematicallypresenting all fixed forms of poems, stanzas, and verses. The goal of this research is toanalyze poetic preconceptions of neosymbolistpoetry in terms of commitment to establishedpoetic forms. In addition, the research aims topinpoint the thoughts on the forms of therespective poets within this group expressed inessays, paying attention to fundamentaldifferences in their understanding, and to noticeconsistency in poetic statements and particularpoetic achievements. Finally, it highlights thetypes and characteristics of the forms used bySerbian neosymbolist poets, as well as thetechniques applied in their modernization.Studious consideration and interpretation ofprinciples involved in writing poems have beenneglected to this very day, just like anycomparative analysis of the use of poetic formsby neosymbolists and the poets they revered. The first chapter of the doctoral thesisPoetic Forms of Serbian Neosymbolism takes alook at the notion of poetic forms, offers anoverview of the existing literature dealing withfixed forms, and indicates previous findings andthe methodological framework of this research. Then the basic poetic postulates of neosymbolistpoetry are considered and the tendency towardfixed forms as a kind of relation to tradition ishighlighted. Finally, the first chapter brings theoverview of the corpus – bibliography of formsin poetic books. The second chapter presents the awarenessof the significance of the form tangible in theexplicit poetics of these poets. It also underlinesthe literary and historical context of Serbianneosymbolist poetry, which indicates theinfluence of both European and Serbian modernpoetry, as well as the activation andmodernization of poetic tradition. The central chapter of this monographpresents an overview of fixed forms of poemsand stanzas used by Serbian neosymbolist poets.Based on their origin, forms are classified as:Roman (the most common), Greek-Byzantineand classical. All the poems by the listed poetsusing the same forms are clearly grouped, andeach of them interpreted, on its own and inrelation to the poems by the other authors.Certain types of stanzas taken from the traditionare listed as well. The relation between free andrhymed verse is highlighted interpretively andthe revival of verses stemming from classical,European and Serbian tradition is underscoredtoo. In general, the conclusion proposes thecharacteristics of chosen poetic forms and theusage of the tradition of the second postwargeneration of poets. Furthermore, it drawsattention to the issue of poem creatingprinciples harmonized with poetic eras, and toinnovation in structuring techniques whichbrought improvements in the development ofSerbian poetry.

Abstract:
This paper presents a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews investigating 1) How teachers in the course English 6 interpret the terms "relatively varied" and "well-grounded and balanced", and how their interpretations differed, 2) How do the teachers interpret the terms in relations to the National Agency for Education’s commentary material?, and 3) What kind of resources do the teachers use to understand those terms? The reason for conducting this research is to gain a greater understanding of how teachers in the course English 6 in upper secondary school interpret the terms in the requirements. The terms in our requirements leave a lot of room for interpretations, and I want to find out how teachers with experiences of teaching interpret the terms in order to better understand how they can be interpret. My finding revealed that three out of four of the interviewed teachers did not mention the terms in their description of them, they brought in other aspects from the requirements, and did not address neither of the terms clearly. This applied to all the teachers, except for T4. The teacher that did address the terms was the only one who read the National Agency’s commentary material, therefore T4’s interpretations of the term aligned closest to the description in the commentary material. From the answers the teachers provided me with, they seemed to interpret the requirements in their own way and this is a validity and reliability issue when assessing the students’ texts. The teachers answers are also discussed from a norm-referenced perspective.

Abstract:

The central concern of this thesis is to investigate the development of the personal identity of the main characters in four novels, a novella, and a short-story, written in German by authors from different countries who have immigrated to post World War II Germany and Switzerland. Earlier research concerning these identity processes is reviewed with emphasis on the relevance of the different theoretical models of development of personal identity used. A model called “identity-balance”, first described by the German sociologist Lothar Krappmann, is used in analysing the changes in personal identity. This model is preferred because of Krappmann’s strong emphasis on interaction, process, and openness. Based upon the results of the interpretations a modification of Krappmann’s model is suggested in order to better shed light upon identity processes following migration. As languages are shown to play a great role in these processes, aspects concerned with multilingualism and the part languages play in the “identity-balance” are discussed throughout the thesis. The textual interpretations reveal the connection between three lines of change: changes in personal identity, changes in society following migration, and changes in the field of literature.

Palmer, Kelly. "Increasing oral language fluency and syntactic structure through a balanced reading approach a case study of a five-year old beginning reader of the edge of the autism spectrum." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/595.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, a significant surge has occurred in the amount of children who are being diagnosed with a disorder on the autism spectrum. Current statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2011) show that 1 in 110 children in the United States have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and that the diagnosis of such is estimated to grow prodigiously due to a variety of different aspects, such as an ever-increasing broadening definition of autism, an inclusion of autism as a disability category under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990, improved diagnostic methods, and some other unknown factors (In Nickel's work as cited by Nickels in 2010). Also, because a lack of or weakness in communication skills is a common characteristic for students who have an ASD, receiving early intervention to increase communication is imperative for this population. In consideration of this premise, this study looks at whether using a blended, balanced mode of reading instruction, the Language Experience Approach (Stauffer, 1970; Van Allen, 1970) and the work of Patricia Oelwein (1995), through written means can improve oral language fluency output and syntactical structure concurrently for a student who has suffered from many of the symptoms of ASD, but has not been clinically diagnosed. Along with the collection of qualitative data aggregated throughout this study through observational means, quantitative data was also collected before, during, and after the intervention to measure the effects on the subject. Quantitative data was obtained from a Letter-Identification Assessment (Clay 2005), the QRI-5 (Leslie & Caldwell, 2011), the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (Dunn & Dunn, 1997) , and Mean Length of Utterance (MLU).; Results obtained from this study showed that the interventions had a positive effect on the subject in terms of listening, speaking, reading, and writing where the fluency and complexity of the subject's speech patterns and ability to read and write improved over the course of the intervention period.

Blunt, Aurelia LaShawn. "Teachers' Perceptions of Integrating Social Studies Text During Reading - Language Arts Instruction." ScholarWorks, 2015. http://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1377.

Full text
Abstract:
In a large urban school system located in a metropolitan city in the southeastern United States, third- and fifth-grade minority students in Title I elementary schools are performing below proficiency in social studies on the statewide standardized assessments. The lack of exposure to the social studies curriculum continues to hinder minority students from successfully comprehending complex informational text, which is important to their success in the newly adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the problem teachers faced with an insufficient amount of time for teaching social studies content and the recent requirement to increase student exposure to informational text. The research used Lev Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism to provide a framework for the methods used in this paper. To address these problems, this study explored two third-grade and two fifth-grade language arts teachers' perceptions of integrating social studies text during their reading-language arts block. Further, the study observed teachers as they integrated social studies text to teach reading. Data for this case study were compiled from interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. The data were reviewed and coded to identify major themes and were then analyzed to generalize data findings. Teachers reported integrating social studies text afforded them the opportunity to maximize instructional time, teach the CCSS, and expose students to more informational text. Implications for positive social change include enabling teachers to identify the benefits of integrating social studies text during reading-language arts instruction and enabling minority students to increase their scores on the statewide social studies assessment.

Vacek, Antonín. "Business Process Reengineering in public sector." Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2010. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-72462.

Full text
Abstract:
The main goal of this work is to create some kind of simple methodology that can help to improve effectiveness of public organizations. There're a lot of theories and methodologies focused on this topic and there is a good chance many new ones will be presented in the future. These came mainly from management field and sometimes from other fields as well. This work focuses mainly on Business Process Reengineering and combines it with other methodologies hoping, it will help in a process improvements in the public sector. Focus is on Czech Republic but this work should be useful to other countries as well, if necessary changes are made in order to shape things that are different between the countries. In this work, a whole project cycle of the public organization processes improvement project can be found, but some project phases will be explained in more detail then the other. Focus is on the analytic parts of the project (strategy creation, use of UML, BSC and other models and methodologies like that) rather than the project management parts of the project. All the practical examples are from public sector organization -- namely the administrative office of one of the city districts of Prague. After reading this work, reader should have moderate understanding of the application of a BPR methodology in the public sector and how it can be supported by other methodologies. There is also big portion of models and diagrams in this work showing pieces of reality from chosen public organization. Their meaning is to show what is usually done in this kind of project and how to understand the models. This works goal isn't creation of a guideline to UML or any other modeling principles.

Evans, Jr Richard Austin. "Fostering success in reading: a survey of teaching methods and collaboration practices of high performing elementary schools in Texas." Texas A&M University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/3968.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined reading programs in 68 Texas elementary schools that were identified as successful by their scores on TAAS assessment results in the 1999-2000 school year. These schools’ student populations had a high proportion of culturally diverse and low-SES students. The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine if and how teaching methods and collaboration (intervention/support teams) were used by effective schools to foster reading success in all students; (2) to identify cohesive patterns (clusters) or models in schools’ use of collaboration and teaching methods; (3) to examine these clusters of similar schools and see if the patterns differed based on the school/community demography (urban, suburban, or rural). The study was conducted in 68 schools in 33 school districts that represented various demographic settings from 12 different Education Service Centers across Texas. From these original 332 variables, 26 variables were selected that were of medium frequency and strongly correlated with high TAAS scores over a 4- year period. These 26 variables were used to examine the 68 high-performing Texas elementary schools for clusters. K-means analysis and HCA were both applied to the 26 response variables, using them as complementary techniques to arrive at a five cluster solution. Results from correlations of individual characteristics and from identifying school clusters suggested that school community type could possibly be moderately predictive of student performance on the TAAS/TAKS over time.
