Full textThe focus on this paper is to show the values of the tenses and the modality morphemes in the Balanta language. The Balanta is a language spoken between Casamance, South of Senegal, and Geba River, north of Guinea-Bissau. The Balanta is an Atlantic language of the Niger-Congo branch, of which Fufulde, Wolof, Diola, Serer, Temne are among the most spoken. The Balanta is located in the north branch, in the group called Bak, togheter with Diola, Mandyak, Mankanya and Papel. The verbal paradigm of Balanta presents the following tenses and modality morphemes: {-Æ} present, remote past, future, change of stage, deictic, conclusive, inconclusive, the last four morphemes are used to express the attitude of the speaker in relation to the propositional content or in relation to the truth of the statement, or in relation to the listener. The morpheme {-Æ} present, in accordance with the verbal paradigm and the kind of verb, present values such as present and past in the perfective, present or future in the imperfective; the modality morphemes, in accordance with the verbal paradigm and the kind of verb, present values such as change of stage and interruption action, closing action in the time and certitude, no action closing and incertitude

Full textThis PhD dissertation aspire to characterize the "Balanta Mané/Bejja" identity, which has been in constant reconstruction, including their ethno-politics dimension, cultural and religious matrix, and its fluidity over time and space. Historically, the presence of Islam, in particular the one disseminate by the "Màndinka, contributed to build up their identity, based on their opposition or resistance: "bàlan". The "Balanta" define themselves as "those who refuse" : in "absentia" of a specific identity, this operates as an identity label. The ancient history and the most recent conflicts have led the "Bejaa" to shape and develop their identity "on the border" between the Casamance and the north of Guinea-Bissau. The ongoing "mandinguization", present in this region for more than a century, affects both the "Bejaa" converted to Islam and the "Bejaa" pagan, and entails the reconstruction of the socio-cultural, political and religious institutions. Their identity strategies, collective and individuals, as well as their various form of resistance (for instance, the women's ones), when faced with the diffusion of Islam (disseminated by the religious brotherhoods, Marabous, or Muslim reformists) are other elements of their "plasticity" which reveals the "local construction" of the "ajaa" identity

Full textThis study, with an annexe, is a reflection on the approach of aphasic subject, in his medical and rehabilitation contexts, from the very start of the diagnosis of his language disturb: the aphasia, or the loss of the acquired language, is generally a syndrome of adult subject. Based on the fundamentals of philosophy, the initial reflection evokes the difficulty of a homogeneous and satisfactory ethics, during the complex medical and paramedical course of this kind of patient, pointing some specific obstacles in the medical, psychological ethics or in the ethics of education. Then, a brief definition of the neuropsychology of language is followed by a presentation of the aphasia, a comment leaned on a mixed aphasia case study, containing a familial and a medical anamneses (Narrative medicine) and a neuropsychological balance assessment (narrative also), focused on the language, witch tends to show that, in a more or less diffuse way, the aphasic subject suffers from a lack of homogeneity on the set or part of the care chain, till the end of the long period of his language rehabilitation (at least three years), when his mother tongue became foreign language. The didactics of the languages, six-thousand-years-old, and its short history is briefly explained; it is the teaching aids proposed for the rehabilitation: the tutorage is especially conceived and adapted to the subject, showing the interest of the field of humanities and social sciences, in a course of care. The care takes into account the psychological state of the patient, his profoundly bruised identity, the neuropsychological balance assessment and the balance assessment of language. Finally, this study suggests the reality of the multidisciplinary field of medical ethics in the field of aphasiology. It expresses a synergy where the position of psychologist, neuropsychologist or speech pathologist, linguist, educationalist language can join

The thesis analyzes the characteristic compensation strategies, which areobserved to be often applied by men. Based on the analysis benefits anddisadvantages each of the strategies are defined. After that, the taskprioritization framework is shown, which enables simultaneous realiztation ofmultiple tasks. In order to include different tasks and constraints in theframework, the formal way of their notation is developed. Special attention isgiven to the constraints that arise as a consequence of contacts with theenvironment. Methodology for determining whether some of the existingcontacts can be broken, but that the desired movement is feasible, andwhether is it necessary to establish a new contact for the realization of theintended movement. By including the constraints in the task prioritizationframework, methodology for modification of the movement in the presence ofconstraints is obtained.

Full textResearch of hydrogen application are quite new in clinical conditions, however theefficiency of molecular hydrogen in previous clinical studies is evident. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the effect of supplementation with hydrogen rich water (HRW)on baseline oxidative stress parameters in elite male judokas. Experimental treatment wascarried out in two phases. In the first phase, experimental group (N=6) weresupplemented daily with HRW (4g) for 28 days, while the control group (N=6) was usedplacebo. After supplementation intake all subjects had "washout" period for 28 days, afterwhich the same protocol was repeated for a period of 28 days. In the second stage ofexperimental treatment, acute effects of supplementation with molecular hydrogen onacid base balance of elite female judokas were examined. In this phase of the study, subjects from experimental group (N=4) were supplemented daily with HRW (4g), whilethe control group (N=4) used placebo. After supplementation all subjects had a"washout" period for a 4 days, after which the same protocol was repeated wherein themembers of the experimental group (N=4) used placebo, while the control group (N=4)was supplemented daily with HRW. The results of analyzed antioxidant enzymes activityin placebo and HRW group indicated on the occurrence of statistically significantdifferences in antioxidant status of elite judo athletes. Obtained results indicate thatresponse of the body due to intake HRW is reflected in increasing levels of SOD andGSH due to the implementation of programmed physical activity. Also, trend of MDAdecreasing in HRW group was detectable. In addition, application of HRW did not causenegative changes in the biochemical and hematological parameters. Acute effects ofsupplementation were affected to a statistically significant reduction in lactateaccumulation and pH increase after applied special judo fitness test (SJFT) on the topjudoka. However, use of supplements had no significant effect on improving performancein elite judokas. Obtained results confirm ergogenic antioxidant power of molecularhydrogen, wherein further studies are necessary in order to adjust the conditions in whichmolecular hydrogen will exerted its maximum in sport.

This study reports on the impact of the Authorial Empathy Scale (AES), a tool designed to measure responses to literature that balance attention both to authors’ aesthetic choices and to empathetic engagement with the narrative world, on teachers’ instructional practices and students’ written and spoken responses. The research is guided by the following research questions: (1) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape the teaching practice of two secondary ELA teachers? (2) In what ways, if any, does a literary unit intervention designed to foster readings of authorial empathy shape secondary students’ responses to texts? Data consist of stimulated-recall interviews and discussion transcripts of teachers and students that were analyzed for the goals, tools, and sources of their decisions. The major findings are the use of the AES seemed to facilitate a common approach among teachers and students for generating more balanced responses to texts. However, sustaining the balanced responses faced challenges in the form of institutional rubrics, IRE discussion patterns, and the specific demands of writing tasks. Students who evidenced greater mastery of the conventions of academic writing tended to generate more authorially empathetic responses to texts. During the Authorial Empathy unit, students tended to engage in more extensive and collaborative talk turns during discussion. The results make clear the importance for teachers to select texts, tasks, and tools that support the use of the AES in guiding students to respond with authorial empathy.

Full textIn St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands (USVI), the growing population of English language learners (ELLs) are expected to meet the standards of the Smarter Balanced assessment and take the test during their first year of school on the island. However, meeting the accountability measures while acquiring academic language proficiency is overwhelming. The lack of language proficiency in English prevents ELLs from achieving academic success in high-stakes standardized testing. For this reason, it was necessary to study this phenomenon. This study addressed the problem of educational policies concerning strategies to help ELLs to demonstrate success on standardized assessments (Modiga, 2013). Results will give leaders and teachers a voice regarding ways to improve practices to assist ELLs on standardized assessments. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the struggle of ESL teachers in the USVI to meet not only the language needs of ELLs but also the requirements for them to pass the Smarter Balanced assessment in the St. Croix School District. Eight themes emerged from the data analysis: lack of professional development (PD), language support, commonly used assessments, language proficiency, cultural diversity, language background experience and expectations, district and school-wide initiatives, and lack of understanding how to meet the provisions of the constructivism theory or ESSA. The first recommendation is to extend the scope of the research to involve more mainstream middle school teachers across the USVI who also serve ELLs and must prepare them for the Smarter Balanced assessment. The second recommendation is to identify instructional practices that can best meet the needs of ELLs in content-area classes in the USVI. The third recommendation is to compare the perceptions of best practices of mainstream teachers from two districts in the USVI, one not making statistically significant gains with ELLs and the other making statistically substantial gains on the Smarter Balanced assessment. The last recommendation is to conduct a study in the USVI on the alignment of the core curriculum with English language proficiency and Common Core State Standards with mainstream teachers using ESL strategies to serve ELLs’ language needs to see if there is improvement on standardized test scores.

Full textLearning a new language means making use, more or less consciously, of the sphere ofproximity between the target linguistic system and the other languages. This proximitystimulates some transfers between the linguistic systems, thus acquiring either a positive or anegative value within interlanguage. This one is considered the third language system developedby the learner, being different from the source language and the target language. We focus onthese transfers and on their influence over interlanguage, in the case of the Romanian learnersstudying French as a foreign language, but also Italian and Spanish. The data analysis enables us, on the one hand, to give an account of the connectionexisting between the conformity to the norm and the complexity of interlanguage and, on theother hand, to ascertain the role of both positive and negative linguistic transfers against thesetwo dimensions of interlanguage (the complexity and the conformity)

Full textResearch affirmed that instructional strategies that promote English Language Learners’ (ELLs) Academic Language Proficiency (ALP) are essential in the primary grades for ELLs to succeed in school. This quantitative causal-comparative study relied on the premise of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory and addressed to what extent Balanced Math instruction affected ELLs’ math performance in Grade 1 and Grade 2, as measured by STAR Math. This study examined the extent differences existed on STAR Math Scores and Student Growth Percentiles of ELLs in Grade 1 and Grade 2 based on exposure to Balanced Math instruction in a rural school district located in the Pacific Northwest. The Mann-Whitney U test examined the extent there were significant differences, p < .05 of the dependent variable, Student Growth Percentile, based on exposure to Balanced Math instruction. The results of the Mann-Whitney U were not statistically significant, U = 1034.50, p = .062, and the null hypothesis could not be rejected. ANOVA assessed if there were significant differences based on the alpha level p < .05 of the dependent variable, STAR Math Scaled Scores, based on exposure to Balanced Math instruction. The results of the ANOVA were not statistically significant, F (1,114) = 0.12, p = .729, &eegr; 2p = 0.00, and the null hypothesis could not be rejected. This study concluded there were no significant differences between ELLs who received Balanced Math instruction and ELLs who did not receive Balanced Math instruction.

Full textGiven that schooling is compulsory and that the quality of literacy instruction that children receive in the primary years lays the foundation for the rest of formal learning, management and teachers are under strong pressure to ensure the improvement of literacy in schools. This study reports on a literacy intervention directed at improving literacy instruction for seventytwo English Additional Language (EAL) learners in grades one to four. The intervention aimed to help teachers maximise teaching time through a theoretically sound approach that balanced language experience, shared and guided reading and writing, and embedded phonics and word level instruction within the context of reading and writing. In doing so, the approach breaks with the traditional position still held by many teachers that learners must first be taught to sound out letters and read words before they can be taught to read and write. Daily features of the literacy programme included whole class shared reading and small group guided reading and writing. Whereas shared reading engaged learners in lively literacy experiences on challenging texts, small group guided reading enabled teachers to match instruction and texts more closely to individual learners' needs. During shared and guided reading sessions, teachers modelled behaviours and strategies on interesting texts, interacted with learners and provided direct instruction in phonics and word level work. Once a week, planned outings and practical activities created opportunities for developing the learners' language and extending their conceptual understandings.

Full textThis study investigated the efficacy of the Read 180 program and its impact on upper secondary ELL students participating in the Read 180 program. The targeted population consisted of four 11th and 12 th grade ELL READ 180 students attending a rural school with a school population of 884 students. To assess the effects of the Read 180 program, data was collected in regards to student reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities from the beginning and the end of the 2017–2018 academic school year. Although this study was limited in duration and scope, it clearly shows that the Read 180 program had limited success in regards to student achievement in the areas of reading and writing. In addition, the data shows little to no progress for the target students in regards to listening and speaking. In addition, the study revealed that the students’ lack of a positive attitude in regards to the Read 180 program may have hindered student progress. Based on these findings, some pedagogical and teacher training recommendations are discussed, and a suggestion is included for future research.

The purpose of this work is to identify the occurrence of noises that affect the communication process, with accounting statements working as businesses language within the process of account rendering between the social work entities and the City Hall of the City of Tabo??o da Serra - City Council of Social Work (CMAS) and City Hall of Tabo??o da Serra (PMTS). In order to do that, it is based on studies that suggest the existence of a relationship between the accounting process, as business language, and the communication theory, with emphasis on the noises that may interfere in any communication process. The investigation tries to identify the occurrence of noises according to the perception of the users of accounting statements, issues - social work entities and receivers - CMAS and PMTS. The reason for carrying out this research comes from the study carried out by the Commission of Guidance Analysis and Inspection COAF/CMAS, where it was detected that the majority of the registered entities had their registrations cancelled or suspended because of problems with the account rendering and research carried out at CMAS, where it was observed the difficulty of the CMAS in establishing and maintaining partnerships with the social work entities in the city. The communication theory reveals that, some times, the level of knowledge of the issuer and the receiver, the social and cultural context where both of them are inserted, the channel used, the content of the message are responsible for problems that occur in the communication process. Therefore, this theory establishes parameters to determine if the communicative act takes place efficiently and effectively. As the main purpose of accounting is the supply of useful information for taking decisions, if accounting statements are not understood, it means that noises took place during the process and that the communicative act did not fully take place. In order to avoid or diminish the harmful effects of the noise it is essential to know where and how they take place.
Full textMeasuring innovative activities is important in order to manage and operate the enterprise more effectively. Many tools appeared on the market, but most of them measured the business success based on financial results. The Balanced Scoredcard (BSC) model, however, included all the aspects of the company, not just a financial component, and it was proven to be an effective tool. The emergence of this model created synergy throughout the company, because this model enabled identification of the strategic indicators that the company should achieve in order to improve its business. This paper shows the current situation regarding to innovation and the introduction of innovative activities in business operations in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, but also explores whether the BSC model is applicable for the evaluation and monitoring of innovative activities in enterprises. A modified BSC model with very carefully selected factors with a focus on innovative activities is a good auxiliary tool for measuring and continuously monitoring the performance of the company. The application of such tools in small and medium-sized enterprises would improve their business.

Founded on the body of works by Serbianneosymbolist poets, this monographicpresentation of poetic forms in a particularperiod of Serbian literature is a step toward theevaluation of the form and represents dueacknowledgement of the formalization problemby means of established rules. Studying therepertoire of poetic forms of these poetsbelonging to a modernized tradition, recognizing their form usage, proposingtypological classifications and marking themanners in which they are related to the form(how and to which extent are strict andpredefined rules broken; is there any destructionor stylization of forms) will contribute to thecontinued actualization of the issue of fixedforms. Much has been written on neosymbolistpoets and there are significant texts in whichtheir poetics is interpreted. Nevertheless, it hasnever been researched which poetic forms areused and how, nor has there ever been anycomparative analysis of specific techniques ofall the poets within this orientation. Somepoems of these poets can only be recognized asexamples in the papers systematicallypresenting all fixed forms of poems, stanzas, and verses. The goal of this research is toanalyze poetic preconceptions of neosymbolistpoetry in terms of commitment to establishedpoetic forms. In addition, the research aims topinpoint the thoughts on the forms of therespective poets within this group expressed inessays, paying attention to fundamentaldifferences in their understanding, and to noticeconsistency in poetic statements and particularpoetic achievements. Finally, it highlights thetypes and characteristics of the forms used bySerbian neosymbolist poets, as well as thetechniques applied in their modernization.Studious consideration and interpretation ofprinciples involved in writing poems have beenneglected to this very day, just like anycomparative analysis of the use of poetic formsby neosymbolists and the poets they revered. The first chapter of the doctoral thesisPoetic Forms of Serbian Neosymbolism takes alook at the notion of poetic forms, offers anoverview of the existing literature dealing withfixed forms, and indicates previous findings andthe methodological framework of this research. Then the basic poetic postulates of neosymbolistpoetry are considered and the tendency towardfixed forms as a kind of relation to tradition ishighlighted. Finally, the first chapter brings theoverview of the corpus – bibliography of formsin poetic books. The second chapter presents the awarenessof the significance of the form tangible in theexplicit poetics of these poets. It also underlinesthe literary and historical context of Serbianneosymbolist poetry, which indicates theinfluence of both European and Serbian modernpoetry, as well as the activation andmodernization of poetic tradition. The central chapter of this monographpresents an overview of fixed forms of poemsand stanzas used by Serbian neosymbolist poets.Based on their origin, forms are classified as:Roman (the most common), Greek-Byzantineand classical. All the poems by the listed poetsusing the same forms are clearly grouped, andeach of them interpreted, on its own and inrelation to the poems by the other authors.Certain types of stanzas taken from the traditionare listed as well. The relation between free andrhymed verse is highlighted interpretively andthe revival of verses stemming from classical,European and Serbian tradition is underscoredtoo. In general, the conclusion proposes thecharacteristics of chosen poetic forms and theusage of the tradition of the second postwargeneration of poets. Furthermore, it drawsattention to the issue of poem creatingprinciples harmonized with poetic eras, and toinnovation in structuring techniques whichbrought improvements in the development ofSerbian poetry.

Full textThe central concern of this thesis is to investigate the development of the personal identity of the main characters in four novels, a novella, and a short-story, written in German by authors from different countries who have immigrated to post World War II Germany and Switzerland. Earlier research concerning these identity processes is reviewed with emphasis on the relevance of the different theoretical models of development of personal identity used. A model called “identity-balance”, first described by the German sociologist Lothar Krappmann, is used in analysing the changes in personal identity. This model is preferred because of Krappmann’s strong emphasis on interaction, process, and openness. Based upon the results of the interpretations a modification of Krappmann’s model is suggested in order to better shed light upon identity processes following migration. As languages are shown to play a great role in these processes, aspects concerned with multilingualism and the part languages play in the “identity-balance” are discussed throughout the thesis. The textual interpretations reveal the connection between three lines of change: changes in personal identity, changes in society following migration, and changes in the field of literature.
