Abstract:
Generalized n-gons are certain geometric structures (incidence geometries) that generalize the concept of projective planes (the nontrivial generalized 3-gons are exactly the projective planes). In a simplified world, every generalized n-gon of finite Morley rank would be an algebraic one, i.e., one of the three families described in [9] for example. To our horror, John Baldwin [2], using methods discovered by Hrushovski [7], constructed ℵ1-categorical projective planes which are not algebraic. The projective planes that Baldwin constructed fail to be algebraic in a dramatic way.Indeed, every algebraic projective plane over an algebraically closed field is Desarguesian [12]. In particular, an algebraically closed field (isomorphic to the base field) can be interpreted in every one of them. However, in the projective planes that Baldwin constructed, one cannot even interpret an infinite group. In this article we show that the same phenomenon occurs for the generalized n-gons if n ≥ 3 is an odd integer. For each such n we construct many nonisomorphic generalized n-gons of finite Morley rank that do not interpret an infinite group. As one may expect, our method is inspired by Hrushovski and Baldwin, and we follow Baldwin's line of approach. Quite often our proofs are a verification of the fact that the proofs of Baldwin [2] for n = 3 carry over to an arbitrary positive odd integer n (which is sometimes far from being obvious). As in [2], we begin by defining a certain collection of finite graphs K* and a binary relation ≤ on these graphs. We show that (K*, ≤) satisfies the amalgamation property.

Abstract:
Background: Within recent years, parks built on top of former landfills have come under scrutiny for their effectiveness at mitigating the effects of the landfill underneath. The purpose of this study is to identify the biogas emissions of converted landfills nearly a century after landfill closure. Methods: Soil and air emissions for methane and carbon dioxide were collected at 112 sites within the North and South portions of Parc Baldwin in Montreal, Quebec, as well as the presumed boundaries of the former landfill. Results: Overall, it was found that South Baldwin and the immediate area (previously a landfill) had a higher mean average methane concentration, as well as a greater number of sites with methane present than North Baldwin. Particular raised areas in South Baldwin showed anomalously high carbon dioxide concentrations. There was a large degree of heterogeneity between emissions at different sites. Limitations: The Eagle 2 machine is limited to measuring only up to 5,000 ppm or 0.5% volume. Another difficulty with the variation in collection of the data is the differences in collection dates. Conclusions: Ultimately, while South Baldwin did have higher CO2 and methane emissions compared to its counterpart, it is inconclusive whether or not this phenomenon is related to the landfill or other factors. Gas concentrations were significantly below the lower explosive limit in both parks.

Abstract:
By situating Baldwin’s Jimmy’s Blues and Other Poems in conversation with Jericho Brown’s 2019 poetry collection The Tradition, this article examines the theory of love in their poetic thinking. It argues that in their poetry, love emerges as a multifaceted mode of knowing and feeling, grounded in corporeal intensity and imbued with sociopolitical and historical meanings. Both Baldwin and Brown view love as integral to the understanding of queer sexuality and racial politics, foregrounding at the same time the challenges of loving and being loved in a historically anti-Black society. Their poetics of love coalesces the intellectual and the affective, the erotic and the political, moving beyond the conventions of inward-bound and personal lyric toward what Martinican philosopher and novelist Édouard Glissant termed a “poetics of relation.” Such transgenerational reading also allows us to explore Baldwin’s and Brown’s poetry as acutely attuned to historical moments which seem strikingly similar: Reagan’s and Trump’s presidencies.

Abstract:
In 1963—as good a date as any to serve as a pivot between “fifties” and “sixties” America—James Baldwin remarked, “The American Negro has the great advantage of having never believed the collection of myths to which white Americans cling: that their ancestors were all freedom-loving heroes, that they were born in the greatest country the world has ever seen, or that Americans are invincible in battle and wise in peace.” It was a bracing declaration, a bit gentler than Malcolm X's designation of Negroes as “victims of Americanism” and perhaps by now, as historians focus ever greater attention on the nationally constitutive role of slavery and white supremacy, almost a commonplace. Yet Baldwin's idea remains challenging to plumb and to fully inhabit. For at that moment, which both Kevin Schultz and Andrew Hartman suggest was preoccupied with “the very question of America and its meaning,” Baldwin's little book, The Fire Next Time, upended the whole debate. He was no black nationalist and, notwithstanding his expatriate life in France, no “emigrationist,” for he believed that blacks in the United States were, socially and culturally, wholly of, if not in, this country; and yet, given the deep corruption in the national past, there was no “meaning” to return to, reclaim, realize, or vindicate as a promise of black freedom. The verb Baldwin chose, in a determinedly existentialist vein, was to “achieve our country”—to create a viable moral meaning for national identity where none as yet existed. If Schultz's subjects, William F. Buckley Jr, and Norman Mailer, were “vying for the soul of the nation” and Hartman's warriors fighting “for the soul of America,” they were—in Baldwin's perspective—chasing a chimera. Such a thing wasn't there; it was yet to come, if at all.

Abstract:
On May 12th, 1926 Stanley Baldwin announced the end of the General Strike in a radio broadcast to the nation. The announcement was followed by a choir singing Parry's now familiarJerusalemwith its resounding climactic affirmation of ‘England's green and pleasant Land’.1It is hard to resist the speculation that this was Baldwin's choice as much as Reith's, since the Conservative Prime Minister had from the outset of his political career been identified as an ordinary man rooted deeply in the English countryside.2Baldwin's private correspondence demonstrates that his attachment to ‘our eternal hills’ was entirely genuine, but there can be little doubt that this was also an image that he consciously cultivated, and which – via his mastery of the new instruments of mass communication – he was able to convey to a wide and popular audience. To this extent he might be thought of as a Tory populist: as J.C. Squire noted in theObserverreview of Baldwin's 1926 collection of his speeches, entitledOn England(released just before the General Strike), ‘this is the work of a thoroughly representative Englishman: not the common man, but one expressing what the common man feels and cannot say for himself’. These ‘common’ themes and sentiments ranged across a number of issues from Shakespeare to the topical ‘Peace in Industry’, but pride of place in the volume was granted to his definitive statement on national identity, given in May 1924 ‘to celebrate our country and our Patron Saint’ at the Annual Dinner of the Royal Society of St. George, and entitled plainly and unambiguously ‘England’.

Abstract:
James Baldwin criticism from 2001 through 2010 is marked by an increased appreciation for Baldwin’s entire oeuvre including his writing after the mid 1960s. The question of his artistic decline remains debated, but more scholars find a greater consistency and power in Baldwin’s later work than previous scholars had found. A group of dedicated Baldwin scholars emerged during this period and have continued to host regular international conferences. The application of new and diverse critical lenses—including cultural studies, political theory, religious studies, and black queer theory—contributed to more complex readings of Baldwin’s texts. Historical and legal approaches re-assessed Baldwin’s relationship to the Civil Rights and Black Power movements and new material emerged on Baldwin’s decade in Turkey. Some historical perspective gave many critics a more nuanced approach to the old “art” vs. “politics” debate as it surfaced in Baldwin’s initial reception, many now finding Baldwin’s “angry” work to be more “relevant” than “out of touch” as it was thought of during his lifetime. In the first decade of the new millennium, three books of new primary source material, a new biography, four books of literary criticism, three edited collections of critical essays, two special issues of journals and numerous book chapters and articles were published, marking a significant increase not only in the quantity, but the quality of Baldwin criticism.

Abstract:
One of the characteristics of Roquefort cheese is the presence of irregularly shaped openings. Although many factors affect the development of opening in blue-veined cheeses (Martley & Crow, 1996), the limiting step in the case of Roquefort cheese is the production of CO2 by lactic acid bacteria (J.-P. Reverbel, pers. comm.). Most of the opening occurs after moulding; the process is difficult to control and many manufacturing runs result in cheeses with an insufficient opening. Concentrated suspensions of Leuconostoc strains are used to increase the production of CO2 (Devoyod & Muller, 1969), but it would clearly be useful to have microorganisms that produce larger quantities of the gas. McKay & Baldwin (1974) isolated a spontaneous mutant of Lactococcus lactis that produced more acetoin and CO2 than the parent strain. This mutant was lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)-deficient, which favoured the conversion of pyruvate into end products other than lactate. Following nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis, we isolated three Lc. lactis mutants whose LDH activities were reduced to varying extents and which produced varying amounts of CO2 (Boumerdassi et al. 1997). Subsequent work showed that these mutants were unstable on successive subculture in milk or synthetic broth (El Attar et al. 2000).The aim of our current work was to select a large number of Lc. lactis mutants producing excess CO2. This would increase the probability of selecting stable mutants and also provide a collection of strains with differing gas production activities. Currently available screening methods are, however, unsuitable for processing large numbers of mutants, which is why we have developed an improved screening method.

Abstract:
The ‘Gyffard’ partbooks (British Library, Add. MSS 17802–5) are perhaps the most important source of Tudor sacred music of the mid-sixteenth century, for unlike the only other collection that could reasonably lay claim to that title—the Henrician partbooks at Peterhouse, Cambridge—they have survived intact. Just six of Gyffard's 94 pieces have contemporary concordances, and only three of these are wholly straightforward. Taverner's Western Wind Mass (no. 24) turns up again in John Sadler's partbooks; two voices only of Redford's Christus resurgens (no. 58) are found in Tenbury MS 389 and its companion, the James part-book; and Van Wilder's Pater noster (no. 6) is printed in Susato's Liber quartus ecclesiasticarum cantionum quatuor vocum (Antwerp, 1554). Two of the three problematic items appear to be four-part reworkings of what were originally five-voice pieces. Taverner's Dum transisset (no. 61) appears a5 in both the Dow and Baldwin partbooks; Johnson's Gaude Maria Virgo (no. 85) is found in its five-part version, though textless, in British Library, Add. MS 31390; finally, a fragment of Tye's Western Wind Mass resurfaces in British Library, Add. MSS 18936–9, attributed to ‘Alphonsus’. There are therefore at least 88 unica in Gyffard—a significantly higher proportion than in any other contemporary source of comparable size. Our knowledge of the state of English sacred polyphony on the eve of the Reformation is heavily dependent on these partbooks, for they preserve a representative cross-section of liturgical genres by a wide range of composers encompassing the great and the obscure.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article is dedicated to the collection from the Bremen Kunsthalle, comprising 1715 drawings, 50 paintings, and about 3000 prints found by Soviet troops in castle of Karnzow near Berlin in May 1945. The collection was not seized by Soviet trophy brigades but was looted by soldiers and officers of the 38th Field Engineers' Brigade of the Red Army. After their return to the USSR and demobilization, some of the officers donated their loot to different museums around the Soviet Union. One of the most important parts of the collection, with 362 drawings and two paintings—among them works of Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, and Van Gogh, was appropriated by Captain Viktor Baldin. In 1948 Baldin deposited his loot in the A. V. Shchusev State Research Museum of Architecture in Moscow. Later Baldin became the director of the museum and advocated return of the art to its rightful owners.Since the days of Gorbachev's perestroika, these art works have frequently attracted public attention and provoked fierce debates. The Federal Law on Cultural Valuables adopted in 1998 did not cover art works looted by private individuals. Rather, such conflicts have to be solved within the framework of Russian criminal law.In contrast, other works of art from the same Bremen Kunsthalle collection were restituted from the United States, Ukraine, and Estonia. Another 101 drawings and prints of the collection, seized by another member of Baldin's brigade, were returned from Russia to Bremen in 2000, but that was in “exchange” for an original mosaic from the legendary Amber Chamber. However, despite more than 20 years of efforts by German officials and endless negotiations, the Baldin Collection remains in the Russian Federation. The return of those stolen drawings any time soon now looks highly improbable. The case of the Baldin Collection became the most striking example of the Russian nonrestitution of cultural property looted during World War II.

Abstract:
In 2006, a cyst nematode was discovered in tare dirt at a potato (Solanum tuberosum) processing facility in eastern Idaho. The nematode was found during a routine survey conducted jointly by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service through the Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey program. Extensive additional sampling from two suspect fields led to the identification of the same nematode in a 45-acre (18.2-ha) field located in northern Bingham County. The morphology of cysts and second-stage juveniles and molecular analyses established the identity of the species as the pale cyst nematode Globodera pallida (Stone 1973) Behrens 1975. Morphological characters used for identification included cyst shape, characteristics of cyst terminal cone including nature of fenestration, cyst wall pattern, anal-vulval distance, number of cuticular ridges between anus and vulva, and Granek's ratio (1,4). The second-stage juvenile morphologies critical for identification were the following: body and stylet length, shape of stylet knobs, shape and length of tail and hyaline tail terminus, and number of refractive bodies in the hyaline part of tail (1,4). Diagnosis as G. pallida was clearly confirmed by two molecular tests. First, PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) profiles of a ribosomal DNA fragment using restriction enzymes RsaI, TaqI, and AluI (2) were consistent with a G. pallida control and not G. rostochiensis. Second, the ribosomal DNA region that extends from the 3′ end of the 18S ribosomal subunit and includes all of ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2 to the 5′ end of the 28S ribosomal subunit was used to generate sequence for the most accurate species determination. Sequences obtained from three individual juveniles were compared with those from several Globodera species (3), revealing unequivocal similarity to G. pallida. This detection represents a new country record for G. pallida in the United States. Collection of additional information regarding distribution of this nematode within the region is underway. Abstract:
The aim of the text is to describe the varieties and transformations of the literary genre inspired by Ovid’s Heroides, which occurred in Jesuit works in the early modern period (sixteenth and seventeenth centuries) within a specific geographical area, i.e. especially in Germany and the Netherlands. These considerations are preceded by a short reflection on Christian heroides created by humanist authors in the sixteenth century. The paper discusses mainly volumes covering entire collections containing numerous sacrae heroides and also presents some illustrative examples. The most important authors for the implementation of the genre are presented: Jakob Bidermann, Jean Vincart and Jakob Balde, as well as (more briefly) Balduin Cabillavius. The concepts of each collection and their ideological dominants are discussed. The analyses are complemented by fragments of some elegies quoted in the original along with the Polish translation made by the author.

Abstract:
The Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB), holds one of the world’s largest collections of sacred and secular works by the Italian composer Baldassarre Galuppi, “il Buranello”, whose operatic music was very popular in the mid-1750s with the Saxon elector and Polish king August III and other members of his court. This impressive collection of Galuppiana includes numerous copies of liturgical works from the copying house of the Venetian priest and notorius forger Iseppo (Giuseppe) Baldan. Recently, several compositions falsely attributed to Galuppi by Baldan have turned out to be the works of Antonio Vivaldi, including an excellent setting of Dixit Dominus (RV 807).
This article demonstrates that the Galuppi-Baldan manuscripts were sent in several batches from Venice to Warsaw (and not Dresden, as originally thought) during the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763), when August III resided in the Polish capital. The Saxon prime minister count Heinrich von Brühl and his musically gifted daughter Maria Amalia also stayed in Warsaw during this period, as did Brühl’s secretary and musical director Friedrich August von Koenig, who arranged for the purchases from Galuppi and Baldan. The fact that operas were also being sent from Rome to Warsaw during the war shows that the nobility in the Polish capital was up-to-date with all the latest Italian music. Reports of performances of Galuppi’s music in Warsaw is presented through official documents and letters written by Friedrich August de Rossi, secretary of Italian affairs at the Saxon-Polish court. This includes a description of a serenate performed at the fifty-seventh birthday of Brühl in August 1757, and evidence is provided which strongly suggests that the music, the so-called “Endimione” serenate, was specially composed by Galuppi for this occasion. Finally, details of the musical manuscripts being sent from Warsaw to Dresden in 1763 and the cataloguing of the collection is presented, in addition to an account of a previously unknown visit of Galuppi to the Saxon capital in 1765.

The 2014 reissue of his two poetry collections, Jimmy’s Blues (1983) and Gypsy (1989), as Jimmy’s Blues and Other Poems urges us to revisit Baldwin’s poetry as an expression of his ideas and sentiments through a different lens: that of a blues poetics. In Baldwin’s poetry, the blues provide an aesthetic and epistemic framework for his expression of a radical internationalist politics of liberation.

Abstract:
Two further unknown sacred vocal compositions by Vivaldi, a Dixit Dominus and a Lauda Jerusalem, have turned up in a collection that has already witnessed two similar discoveries in recent decades: that of the former Saxon Hofkapelle, today in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek / Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden. Like their predecessors, the newly discovered works were acquired between the mid-1750s and early 1760s from the copying shop of Iseppo Baldan in Venice, who falsified the attribution on the title page to make the composer Galuppi instead of Vivaldi. Whereas the Lauda Jerusalem is an arrangement by Vivaldi of an anonymous stile antico setting of the same psalm in his own collection (and in turn the model for his own Credidi propter quod, rv605), the Dixit Dominus, scored for choir, soloists and orchestra, is an entirely original composition of outstanding musical quality that dates from the composer’s late period. This article explores the background to the Hofkapelle’s purchases from Baldan and provides a description of the new compositions, together with several arguments (based on musical concordances, general stylistic features and notational characteristics) for their attribution to Vivaldi.

Abstract:
Modern surface transportation vehicles often include different levels of automation. Higher automation levels have the potential to impact surface transportation in unforeseen ways. For example, connected vehicles with higher levels of automation are at a higher risk for hacking attempts, because automated driving assistance systems often rely on onboard sensors and internet connectivity (Amoozadeh et al., 2015). As the automation level of vehicle control rises, it is necessary to examine the effect different levels of automation have on the driver-vehicle interactions. While research into the effect of automation level on driver-vehicle interactions is growing, research into how automation level affects driver’s responses to vehicle hacking attempts is very limited. In addition, auditory warnings have been shown to effectively attract a driver’s attention while performing a driving task, which is often visually demanding (Baldwin, 2011; Petermeijer, Doubek, & de Winter, 2017). An auditory warning can be either speech-based containing sematic information (e.g., “car in blind spot”) or non-sematic (e.g., a tone, or an earcon), which can influence driver behaviors differently (Sabic, Mishler, Chen, & Hu, 2017). The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of level of automation and warning type on driver responses to novel critical events, using vehicle hacking attempts as a concrete example, in a driving simulator. The current study compared how level of automation (manual vs. automated) and warning type (non-semantic vs. semantic) affected drivers’ responses to a vehicle hacking attempt using time to collision (TTC) values, maximum steering wheel angle, number of successful responses, and other measures of response. A full factorial between-subjects design with the two factors made four conditions (Manual Semantic, Manual Non-Semantic, Automated Semantic, and Automated Non-Semantic). Seventy-two participants recruited using SONA ( odupsychology.sona-systems.com ) completed two simulated drives to school in a driving simulator. The first drive ended with the participant safely arriving at school. A two-second warning was presented to the participants three quarters of the way through the second drive and was immediately followed by a simulated vehicle hacking attempt. The warning either stated “Danger, hacking attempt incoming” in the semantic conditions or was a 500 Hz sine tone in the non-semantic conditions. The hacking attempt lasted five seconds before simulating a crash into a vehicle and ending the simulation if no intervention by the driver occurred. Our results revealed no significant effect of level of automation or warning type on TTC or successful response rate. However, there was a significant effect of level of automation on maximum steering wheel angle. This is a measure of response quality (Shen & Neyens, 2017), such that manual drivers had safer responses to the hacking attempt with smaller maximum steering wheel angles. In addition, an effect of warning type that approached significance was also found for maximum steering wheel angle such that participants who received a semantic warning had more severe and dangerous responses to the hacking attempt. The TTC and successful response results from the current experiment do not match those in the previous literature. The null results were potentially due to the warning implementation time and the complexity of the vehicle hacking attempt. In contrast, the maximum steering wheel angle results indicated that level of automation and warning type affected the safety and severity of the participants’ responses to the vehicle hacking attempt. This suggests that both factors may influence responses to hacking attempts in some capacity. Further research will be required to determine if level of automation and warning type affect participants ability to safely respond to vehicle hacking attempts. Acknowledgments. Abstract:
We read with interest the Gaber&rsquo;s article on a retrospective analysis of long-COVID (LC) patents referred to an LC service in Northern England between November 2020 and November 2022 [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. It was found that of 17 patients aged &gt;70 years with LC, only 7 had their fatigue associated with post-exertional malaise (PEM) [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. One of these 7 patients had a history of fibromyalgia and her PEM preceded a COVID-19 infection [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. Only 6 patients had significant comorbidity [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. A total of 482 of the 515 &lt;70 year-old patients had PEM related to their fatigue (93.5%) [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. It was concluded that the prevailing hypotheses explaining the rarity of LC in the elderly population are due to data collection bias and/or biopsychosocial factors [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. The study is impressive, but some points require discussion. The assumption that LC is less common among patients over 70 years is not supported. In support of their arguments, the author cites a meta-analysis of 45 studies in which the definition of ME, the diagnostic methods used, and the population groups varied significantly between studies (&ldquo; The prevalence rates were varied by enrolled participants (gender, study participants, and population group), case definitions and diagnostic methods&rdquo;) [Lim, E. J. <em>et al</em>., 2020]. This suggests that individual study results are not reliable. The author compares LC with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and emphasizes that ME/CFS requires the presence of PEM for diagnosis [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. In general, however, it is not justified to combine the terms CFS and ME. Encephalomyelitis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) due to either infectious or immunological causes and is usually associated with CNS abnormalities on imaging particularly after use of contrast medium. Inflammation of the CNS can usually be documented by abnormal parameters in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examinations. However, none of the included 17 patients had apparent CNS imaging or CSF examinations.&nbsp; A limitation of the study is it small group size (n=17) [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. From such a small number of patients, conclusions become questionable. In addition, the control group consisted of 515 patients with LC aged &lt;70 years [Gaber, T. A, 2023]. There was also no statistical analysis. Therefore, the study design is not suitable for drawing conclusions such as those presented in the article.&nbsp; It is not mentioned whether the included patients were diagnosed with depression or not. Since depression is a major cause of rest- and exercise-related fatigue [Baldwin, D. S. <em>et al</em>., 2006], it is important to know how many people had depression as a possible cause of fatigue. Another cause of fatigue that was not taken into account in the assessment is medication. Several medications are known to cause fatigue. In particular hypnotics, sedatives, anxiolytics, benzodiazepines, neuroleptics, antidepressants, antiepileptics, immunosuppressants, steroids, and antibiotics can cause fatigue [Zlott, D. A. <em>et al</em>., 2010]. How many of the patents included were already taking medications in these classes before the COVID infection and how many received them after the onset of the infection? It is also not considered that extensive use of electronic media could lead to increased fatigue. Since communication, education, and work have often been significantly reduced to the use of electronic media (&ldquo;home office&rdquo;, &ldquo;home schooling&rdquo;) and electronic media have been used more commonly since the pandemic than before [McClain, C. <em>et al</em>., 2021], it is conceivable that electro-smog contributed to the symptoms of LC [Kato, Y. <em>et al</em>., 2012].&nbsp; In conclusion, the excellent study has limitations that should be addressed before drawing final conclusions. Clarifying the weaknesses would strengthen the conclusions and could improve the study

Abstract:
The study was intended to examine the relationship of perfectionism with body dysmorphic disorder symptoms among men seeking and not seeking hair transplants. For this purpose, the cross-sectional method was used. The study was conducted at different dermatological/hair transplant clinics and at different government and private institutions in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, from February 2020 to October 2020. The sample was comprised of adult balding men aged 19 to 65 years from both clinical (hair transplant clinics) and non-clinical settings (banks, offices, parks, shopping malls) in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. For data collection, purposive sampling was used. The instruments used were the Multi-Dimensional Perfectionism Scale and Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale modified for BDD(YBOCS-BDD). The sample was comprised of 150 balding men, 75 (50%) each were taken from clinical and non-clinical settings. The results have revealed that Perfectionism was significantly positively related to body dysmorphic disorder symptoms (p&lt;.01). The Mean value for perfectionism was 184.53 (19.92) and on body dysmorphic disorder symptoms was 14.37 (10.11) for men who were seeking hair transplant while the mean value on perfectionism was 180.16 (22.75) and on body dysmorphic disorder symptoms was 11.25 (17.89) for men who were not seeking treatment. Therefore, Men seeking hair transplants had higher levels of perfectionism and body dysmorphic disorder symptoms than men not seeking hair transplants.

Am J Sports Med. 2014;42(11):2769–2776. Clinical Questions: In pediatric patients, does early operative treatment of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury result in decreased knee instability compared with delayed or nonoperative treatment? Data Sources: This review focused on the PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. The following query searches were used: ACL or anterior cruciate ligament and young or child or children or pediatric or immature. Dates searched were not specified. A separate search was also conducted of abstracts published between 2009 and 2011 from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine; International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine; European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery, and Arthroscopy; American Orthopaedic Association; Arthroscopy Association of North America; Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America; and American Academy of Pediatrics conferences. Study Selection: Available studies were included only if they were written in English; were of level 1, 2, or 3 evidence (grading taxonomy not stated); were cohort designs that compared nonoperative and operative treatments; involved an early versus delayed ACL reconstruction that could be prospective or retrospective; and reported primary outcome interest measures. Animal studies, basic science studies, case series, reviews, commentaries, and editorials were excluded from the review. Data Extraction: A systematic assessment tool, Guide to Community Preventive Services: Systematic Reviews and Evidence-Based Recommendations, was used by 2 of the authors to independently grade the quality of each study that met the inclusion criteria. The tool focused on 6 areas: intervention and study description, sampling, measurement, analysis, interpretation of results, and other execution factors. This tool helped to ensure consistency, reduce bias, and improve the validity and reliability of preventive health care studies. Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. Six studies compared nonoperative with operative treatment, and 5 studies compared early reconstruction (open physes) with delayed reconstruction (closed physes). Studies in this meta-analysis consisted of the following: four level-3 prospective studies, four level-3 retrospective studies, one level-2 retrospective study, one level-3 case-control study, and one level-3 study with both prospective and retrospective data collection. All of the studies included data related to patient demographics, treatment interventions, follow-up duration, presence of any meniscal symptoms, time to return to sport participation, patient-reported outcomes (International Knee Documentation Committee [IKDC], Lysholm, or Tegner scores), the need for a second surgical procedure, and any posttreatment problems. Main Results: Of those who chose the nonoperative route, 75% reported instability, whereas only 13.6% of those who had surgery reported instability. These data also showed that nonoperative or delayed-operative patients were 33.7 times more likely to report instability than the early operative group. Those who chose the nonoperative route had a 12 times greater risk (odds ratio = 12.2, 95% confidence interval = 1.55, 96.3) of developing a meniscal tear after the initial injury. Three studies included in the meta-analysis reported return to sport status, but only 2 studies provided adequate data for both operative and nonoperative patients. In 1 study, 92% of operative patients were able to return to sport, but only 43.75% of nonoperative patients were able to do so. The second study reported that all operative and nonoperative patients were able to return to the same level of sport after injury. Of those in the early operative group, 6% required a repeat surgical intervention for either an ACL rerupture or a meniscal tear, and 19% of those who initially chose nonoperative treatment eventually needed surgery to repair the ACL or meniscus. Findings favor the early operative group over the delayed operative and nonoperative groups based on IKDC scores. One study reported a significant difference in operative patients, with an IKDC mean score of 95 compared with 87 in the nonoperative group. Similarly, a different study reported a mean score of 94.6 in the early operative group compared with 82.4 in the delayed operative group and was stated to have met the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). The MCID was not met for the Lysholm and Tegner scores between operative and nonoperative patients. Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis favor early operative treatment for pediatric patients with ACL tears over delayed or nonoperative treatment. Early operative treatment is initiated shortly after the injury, while the patient is still skeletally immature and the growth plates are open. Current evidence suggests that early ACL reconstruction will result in less knee instability and a more likely return to the preinjury activity level without affecting the growth plates or causing growth disturbances.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTBetween 1898 and 1905, three American expeditions attempted to reach the geographical North Pole from the archipelago of Zemlya Frantsa-Iosifa [Franz Josef Land] and each went to extraordinary and expensive lengths to stage their work. The third of these, the Ziegler polar expedition (1903–1905), led by Anthony Fiala and funded by the American baking soda tycoon William Ziegler, set up numerous camps and caches of supplies along its various expedition routes through the islands. The papers of Anton Vedoe and Ernest Leffingwell at the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College reveal both the locations and contents of the caches Fiala ordered to be established in spring 1905, as he made his second and final attempt to reach the pole. These caches extend from the expedition base camp (Camp Abruzzi) at Bukhta Teplitsa [Teplitz Bay] on Ostrov Rudol'fa [Rudolf Island] to the main base of the preceding 1901–1902 Baldwin-Ziegler expedition (Camp Ziegler) on Ostrov Aldzher [Alger Island]. Little is known of the condition of these sites, especially the main cache site of Kane Lodge on Ostrov Grili [Greely Island]. As such, they hold the potential to provide new sources of archaeological data to study American polar ambitions at the turn of the 20th century. While these sites remain unexplored, increasing tourism in the islands necessitates informed planning and field research to establish the nature and stability of these remains so that they may be preserved and the potential effects of tourism mitigated.

Abstract:
The objectives of this study are to (1) describe the ecranisation process in terms of plot reduction and (2) explain the function of the ecranisation process that appears in the plot of James Baldwin's novel If Beale Street Could Talk (1974) to the film If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) by Barry Jenkins. This study employs ecranisation theory by Eneste (1991) to analyze the transformation from novel into Film If Beale Street Could Talk. Descriptive qualitative data analysis was employed in this study. Data collecting methods based on a review of the literature because the medium utilized to create novels and films are different, the results of this study show that the ecranisation process happens in the plot. The reduction of plot from components that aren't as crucial for display causes a general reduction.

Abstract:
Kara Walker describes her book After the Deluge (2007) as “rumination” on Hurricane Katrina structured in the form of a “visual essay.” The book combines Walker's own artwork and the works of other artists into “a narrative of fluid symbols” in which the overarching analogy of “murky, toxic waters” holds the potential to “become the amniotic fluid of a potentially new and difficult birth.” This essay considers Walker's use of history within this collection of images to show how the book opens up ways to interrogate Katrina's particular significance as a wholly new, and yet eerily familiar, historical “event.” Nuancing a reading of Walker's book with reference to James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time (1963), to which After the Deluge implicitly alludes, the essay examines Walker's artistic challenge to the notion that history is a narratable account of a past that precedes the present and demonstrates how that challenge encourages us to think about the potential uses of history within civil rights discourse after Katrina.

Abstract:
The algal flora of the western group of the Azores archipelago (Islands of Flores and Corvo) has attracted the interest of many researchers on numerous past occasions (such as Drouet 1866, Trelease 1897, Gain 1914, Schmidt 1929, Schmidt 1931, Azevedo et al. 1990, Fralick and Hehre 1990, Neto and Azevedo 1990, Neto and Baldwin 1990, Neto 1996, Neto 1997, Neto 1999, Tittley and Neto 1996, Tittley and Neto 2000, Tittley and Neto 2005, Tittley and Neto 2006, Azevedo 1998, Azevedo 1999, Tittley et al. 1998, Dionísio et al. 2008, Neto et al. 2008). Despite this interest, the macroalgal flora of the Islands cannot be described as well-known with the published information reflecting limited collections preformed in short term visits by scientists. To overcome this, a thorough investigation, encompassing collections and presence data recording, has been undertaken for both the littoral and sublittoral regions, down to a depth of approximately 40 m, covering a relatively large area on both Islands (approximately 143 km2 for Flores and 17 km2 for Corvo). This paper lists the resultant taxonomic records and provides information on species ecology and occurrence around both these Islands, thereby improving the knowledge of the Azorean macroalgal flora at both local and regional scales. For the Island of Flores, a total of 1687 specimens (including some taxa identified only to genus level) belonging to 196 taxa of macroalgae are registered, comprising 120 Rhodophyta, 35 Chlorophyta and 41 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae). Of these taxa, 128 were identified to species level (80 Rhodophyta, 22 Chlorophyta and 26 Ochrophyta), encompassing 37 new records for the Island (20 Rhodophyta, 6 Chlorophyta and 11 Ochrophyta); two Macaronesian endemics (<em>Laurencia viridis</em> Gil-Rodríguez &amp; Haroun and <em>Millerella tinerfensis</em> (Seoane-Camba) S.M.Boo &amp; J.M.Rico); six introduced (the Rhodophyta <em>Asparagopsis armata</em> Harvey, <em>Neoizziella divaricata</em> (C.K.Tseng) S.-M.Lin, S.-Y.Yang &amp; Huisman, and <em>Symphyocladia marchantioides</em> (Harvey) Falkenberg; the Chlorophyta <em>Codium fragile</em> subsp. <em>fragile</em> (Suringar) Hariot; and the Ochrophyta <em>Hydroclathrus tilesii</em> (Endlicher) Santiañez &amp; M.J.Wynne, and <em>Papenfussiella kuromo</em> (Yendo) Inagaki); and 14 species of uncertain status (10 Rhodophyta, 2 Chlorophyta and 2 Ochrophyta). For the Island of Corvo, a total of 390 specimens distributed in 56 taxa of macroalgae are registered, comprising 30 Rhodophyta, 9 Chlorophyta and 17 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae). Whilst a number of taxa were identified only to the genus level, 43 were identified to species level (22 Rhodophyta, 8 Chlorophyta and 13 Ochrophyta), comprising 22 new records for the Island (9 Rhodophyta, 4 Chlorophyta and 9 Ochrophyta), two introduced species (the Rhodophyta <em>Asparagopsis armata</em> and the Chlorophyta <em>Codium fragile</em> subsp. <em>fragile</em>, and seven species of uncertain status (5 Rhodophyta and 2 Ochrophyta).

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Cushing’s syndrome is very rare in pregnancy with around 200 cases reported in literature. It remains a diagnostic dilemma as pregnancy itself is a hypercortisolemic state. Several clinical characteristics of Cushing’s syndrome such as insulin resistance and hirsutism may overlap with normal variants of pregnancy and therefore leading to a missed diagnosis. We hereby present a case of a young pregnant woman with severe insulin resistance, with workup consistent with Cushing’s syndrome. Clinical Case: This was a 27-year-old pregnant woman with DM type 2 diagnosed about 7 years ago. During her pregnancy she was started on insulin and was later admitted to the hospital at 32 weeks for inpatient management of pre-eclampsia and uncontrolled hyperglycemia. Endocrine was consulted for severe insulin resistance and persistent hyperglycemia. On exam patient was noted to be obese with facial plethora, frontal balding and significant facial hirsutism. During the pregnancy she had noted significant weight gain with substantial worsening of frontal balding and hirsutism. Her current pregnancy was spontaneous but was after many years of trying to conceive. Prior pregnancy 8 years ago was uncomplicated with no history for GDM at that time. Review of recent pre-pregnancy imaging revealed left adrenal mass measuring 3.5 cm with 40 HU which measured around 2 cm 8 years ago. Biochemical work up revealed elevated 8 am cortisol at 35.4 ug/dL (ref range 6.2 - 19.4) with suppressed ACTH &amp;lt;5 pg/mL (6 – 50). Testosterone was high at 299 ng/dL (8 – 48) and DHEAS was low normal at 37 mcg/dL (18 – 391). Plasma and 24 hour urine metanephrine collection results were normal. 24-hour urine free cortisol was measured and was elevated at 628.5 mcg/24(4.0–50.0). Midnight salivary cortisol was 0.87 mcg/dL (&amp;lt;OR=0.09). Patient was managed conservatively with plan for surgical intervention post-delivery. Pregnancy was complicated by PPROM at 35 weeks with subsequent cesarean section. Baby was of average weight but developed mild hyperbilirubinemia which required short NICU stay. On reevaluation at 4-week postpartum period, repeat biochemical workup revealed elevated cortisol of 22.5 mcg/dL, ACTH &amp;lt;5 pg/ml, elevated 24-hour urine cortisol 163.9 mcg/24h with appropriate urinary creatinine. Testosterone level was improved postpartum to 9 ng/dL. DHEAS was 39 mcg/dL. Repeat imaging with CT with adrenal protocol revealed left adrenal mass measuring 2.3 cm with 20 HU with absolute washout of 79%. She was started on ketoconazole is now awaiting surgical intervention. Conclusion: We suspect that this patient may have had pregestational subclinical Cushing’s syndrome which eventually progressed to Cushing’s syndrome during pregnancy. Although this is a rare finding during pregnancy, workup for Cushing’s should be considered in pregnant women with severe insulin resistance, hirsutism, hypertension and pre-eclampsia.

ABSTRACT: In the year 1585 the flemish painter Hans Bol made the series of twelve drawings with evangelical themes related with the twelve months of the year and the twelve signs of the zodiac. That same year the engraver Adriaen Collaert engraved in copper the series with the title of Emblemata evangelica ad XII signa coelestia sive totidem ani menses accommodata, which is what served to give diffusion to the work. However, Hans Bol’s original drawings were always in private collections until 2014 when the King Baudouin Foundation of Brussels acquired them and published a work about the drawings and the first series of engravings. In this study, we make known this publication to researchers in the Spanish language and several incomplete series inspired by the Evangelical Emblemata are analyzed.&#x0D; KEYWORDS&#x0D; Hans Bol; Adriaen Collaert; Abel Grimmer; Diego Quispe Tito; Emblemata evangelica.&#x0D; RESUMEN: En el año 1585 el pintor flamenco Hans Bol realiza la serie de los doce dibujos sobre temas evangélicos relacionados con los doce meses del año y los doce signos del zodiaco. Aims. The aim of this paper is the spectroscopic study of 13 galaxies belonging to the field of the protocluster associated with the radio galaxy 7C 1756+6520 at z = 1.4156. In particular, we focus on the characterization of the nuclear activity. Methods. This analysis has been performed on rest-frame optical spectra taken with the Large Binocular Telescope, using the spectrograph LUCI, which is operative in the near-infrared domain. The adopted spectral coverage allowed us to observe emission lines such as Hα, Hβ, [O III]λ 5007 Å, and [N II]λ 6583 Å at the redshift of the central radio galaxy. We observed the central part of the protocluster, which is suitable to include the radio galaxy, several spectroscopically confirmed active galactic nuclei (AGN) belonging to the protocluster, and other objects that might be members of the protocluster. Results. For four previously identified protocluster members, we derived the redshift by detecting emission lines that have never detected before for these galaxies. We identified a new protocluster member and eight new possible protocluster members. The stacked spectrum of the galaxies in which we detected the [O III]λ 5007 Å emission line revealed the second line of the [O III] doublet at 4959 Å and the Hβ line, which confirms that they belong to the protocluster. By collecting all members identified so far in this work and other members from the literature, we defined 31 galaxies, including the central radio galaxy, around the redshift 1.4152 ± 0.056. This corresponds to peculiar velocities ≲5000 km s−1 with respect to the radio galaxy. The position versus velocity phase-space diagram suggests that three AGN of the protocluster and the central radio galaxy might be a virialized population that has been coexisting for a long time in the densest core region of this forming structure. This protocluster is characterized by a high fraction of AGN (~23%). For one of them, AGN1317, we produced two so-called Baldwin, Phillips &amp; Terlevich (BPT) diagrams. The high fraction of AGN and their distribution within the protocluster seem to be consistent with predictions of some theoretical models on AGN growth and feedback. These models are based on galaxy interactions and ram pressure as triggers of AGN activity. Conclusions. The high fraction of AGN belonging to the protocluster suggests that they were likely triggered at the same time, maybe by the ongoing formation of the protocluster. Observations of AGN in this protocluster and in other distant clusters will help clarifying whether the resulting high fraction of AGN is unusual or typical for such structures at high redshift. Our next step will be analyses of previously acquired high-resolution radio data of the central radio galaxy to derive information on the nature of the radio galaxy and connect it with its cosmic evolution.

Abstract:
Langston Hughes (1902–67), the wondering wandering poet, has left behind a rich legacy of books that never grow dusty on the shelves. There seems to be no path that Hughes left untrodden; he wrote drama, novels, short stories, two autobiographies, poetry, journalistic prose, an opera libretto, history, children's stories, and even lyrics for songs, in addition to his translations. Hughes was the first African American author to earn his living from writing and his career spans a long time, from the 1920s until the 1960s – he never stopped writing during this period. The Harlem Renaissance introduced prominent black writers who engraved their names in the American canon, such as Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Jean Toomer and Zora Neale Hurston, but Hughes markedly stands out for his artistic achievements and longer career. Hughes had been identified by many as the spokesperson for his race since his works dug deep into black life, and his innovative techniques embraced black dialect and the rhythms of black music. He captured the essence of black life with conspicuous sensitivity and polished his voice throughout four decades. His name also had long been tied to the politics of identity in America. Brooding over his position, Hughes chose to take pride in being black in a racist nation. In his case, the dialectics of identity are more complicated, as they encompass debates involving Africa, black nationalism and competing constructions surrounding a seeming authentic blackness, in addition to Du Bois's double consciousness. Critics still endeavour to decipher the many enigmas Hughes left unresolved, having been a private person and a controversial writer. His career continues to broach speculative questions concerning his closeted sexual orientation and his true political position. The beginning of the new millennium coincided with the centennial of his birth and heralded the advent of new well-researched scholarship on his life and works, including Emily Bernard's Remember Me to Harlem: The Letters of Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten, 1925–1964 (2001), Kate A. Baldwin's Beyond the Color Line and the Iron Curtain: Reading Encounters between Black and Red, 1922–1963 (2002), Anthony Dawahare's Nationalism, Marxism, and African American Literature between the Wars: A New Pandora's Box (2002), Bruce R. Schwartz's Langston Hughes: Working toward Salvation (2003), and John Edgar Tidwell and Cheryl R. Ragar's edited collection Montage of a Dream: The Art and Life of Langston Hughes (2007), among others.

e4974049Teacher training for the development of digital skills is a key factor for in pedagogical innovation in Distance Higher Education. Taking into account the difficulties of many professors to work in this modality and the lack of training programs for online education, this study focus on professors’ competencies for online teaching in Higher Education. This article presents results regarding professors' perception about their competences for the exercise of teaching online. Under an online survey was used as data collection instrument. It was applied to professors who carry out online teaching activities in public or private higher education institutions in Brazil and Portugal, as they represent the Portuguese speaking countries with the greatest international relevance in the field of provision in this context. The study involved a simple non-probability sampling process, composed of 277 university professors, of which 236 from Brazil and 41 from Portugal. Descriptive statistical analysis and parametric tests were conducted to assess the differences between the professors’ perceptions of both nationalities. The results show that these teachers have favorable self-perceptions regarding their knowledge of content, pedagogy, technology as well as regarding their transversal skills associated with online education. However, they perceive some difficulty in effectively integrating different knowledges (scientific and pedagogical) with technology in their pedagogical practices. The differences found between countries were not statistically significant. The need to invest in professors’ training is detected, especially in the area of technologies and their integration with pedagogical and content knowledge. Keywords: Distance education, Higher Education, Teacher Education, Teacher Competencies.ReferencesALI, Radwan; WRIGHT, James. Abstract:
Abstract Background: Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) have immunomodulatory properties that may potentiate anti-PD-L1 therapy. To explore this, we developed the academic ARIANES phase 2 basket trial, which evaluated the PARPi rucaparib (R) and the anti-PD-L1 atezolizumab (A) in selected patients (pts). We performed single-cell RNA + T cell receptor sequencing (scRNA+TCR-seq) on 3 sequential tumor biopsies in a pts subset. Methods: ARIANES comprised 4 molecularly-selected DNA damage response deficient (DDRd), 3 platinum-sensitive, and 2 unselected cohorts of pts with non-small cell lung (NSCLC), prostate (CRPC), and other non-breast non-ovarian cancers. R was administered for 3 weeks, followed by R+A. Primary endpoint was overall response rate (ORR) at 12 weeks per cohort. scRNA+TCR-seq was performed on fresh biopsies collected at baseline, on R, and on R + A in the same lesion, with concomitant plasma collection. We tracked the evolution over time of tumor and microenvironment cells, differentially expressed genes and signatures within each cell population, and TCR clonal dynamics. Results: ARIANES enrolled 130 pts, including 27 DDRd CRPC and 3 DDRd NSCLC pts, on which we focus here. Best ORR by RECIST v1.1 was 22% (6/27) in CRPC pts, and mPFS: 7.9 months (95% CI 4 - 11.1) at data cut-off. ORR was 0% in NSCLC pts. We successfully profiled 3 sequential fresh biopsies in 2 BRCA2-mutant CRPC, 1 ATM-mutant, and 1 RAD54L-mutant NSCLC pts. Tumor, T and B lymphoid, myeloid, plasma, dendritic, NK, endothelial, and stromal cells were identified in all samples. Differential expression testing unveiled PARP1 upregulation in tumor cells on R. One CRPC pt with prolonged partial response displayed activation of innate immune sensing pathways (including cGAS-STING and IFN signaling) in tumor and immune cells, as well as JAK/STAT and CCL5, all increasing gradually on R and R + A; scTCR-seq revealed the expansion of specific T cell clonotypes on R + A. One ATM-mutant NSCLC pt with 6-month stable disease displayed increased cGAS/STING, JAK/STAT and CCL5 activation on R in NK cells only, and no TCR expansion. None of the above was observed in the 2 pts who progressed. Complete clinical and translational study results will be presented at the congress. Conclusion: Sequential scRNA+TCR-seq enables the dynamic assessment of tumor and immune cells on therapy. Our data confirms the potential of R to activate innate immune pathways in pt tumors, and R + A to induce T cell activation and clonal expansion. To our knowledge, this is the first study providing a longitudinal single-cell resolution analysis of the clonal evolution of tumor and immune cells in pts on PARPi + anti-PD-L1. We identify potential biological correlates of therapy response, including the activation of innate immune pathways and TCR expansion. Abstract:
BackgroundThe aging process is a normal physiological phenomenon and has an impact on the body composition and physical fitness of the elderly. It is characterized by a progressive increase in total body fat mass, a decrease in muscle mass and changes in distribution in terms of an increase in abdominal fat tissue. These changes in the elderly have a great impact on health, functional capacity, and quality of life. The variability of body composition components contributes to the origin and progression of pathology and disability. Today osteodensitometric examination is considered one of the most versatile imaging techniques for assessing osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity, and is currently the only technique capable of identifying all of these conditions at the same time. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural bone loss, leading to an increased risk of fracture caused by a minor trauma.ObjectivesTo determine the presence of normal values of T score, osteopenia and osteoporosis, to determine the distribution of BMI and values of lean muscle mass, adipose tissue and visceral adipose tissue of the examined population.MethodsIn this retrospective study conducted from March to April 2019 at the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina, 699 respondents of both sexes over 65 participated. Exclusion criteria were established osteoporosis and treatment. The research consisted of collecting general information of the respondents (gender, age, smoking status, level of education, marital status). Body composition (BMD, FM, VAT, LM) was measured by osteodensitometric examination. Also, all subjects body weight, and height were measured and their body mass index (BMI) was determined.ResultsThe average age of respondents was 71.92 ± 5.14, most respondents 50.6% have secondary education, 52.2% are married, 9.5% are smokers. The classification of the total T score shows a normal finding in 26.8%, with osteopenia 58.4% and with osteoporosis 14.8% of subjects. According to (BMI) with a normal finding is 16.5%, overweight is 38.5% and obese 45% of respondents. The average BMI of men is 28.79 ± 4.01, and for women the average BMI is 29.92 ± 4.91. The average value of VAT is 1,537 ± 0,820, FM 31,105 ± 9,152 and LM 43,735 ± 8,279. Men have higher average VAT values (2.06 ± 0.90) compared to women (1.32 ± 0.67). The average FM is higher in women (32.49 ± 8.88) than in men (27.60 ± 8.89). The average LM is higher in men (53.38 ± 7.05) than in women (39.92 ± 4.97). Subjects with normal findings were 61.5% obese, with osteopenia 40.2%, and with osteoporosis 28% obese. The measured value of LM in persons with normal findings is 47,921 ± 8,738, with osteopenia 42,342 ± 7,378, with osteoporosis 40,443 ± 6,949. The measured value of FM in persons with normal findings is 34.37 ± 9.51, with osteopenia 30.20 ± 8.75, and with osteoporosis 27.60 ± 7.14. The measured value of VAT in persons with normal findings is 34.37 ± 9.51, with osteopenia 34.37 ± 9.51, with osteoporosis 27.60 ± 7.14.ConclusionHigher values of BMI, LM, FM, and VAT have a positive effect on the hip and spine T score, and a protective role against osteoporosis.References[1]Salvio G, Petrelli M, Paolini S, Baldini V, Sbaffi C, Basili S, Giordano A, Balercia G, Cinti S. Abstract:
BackgroundTo obtain a comprehensive understanding of the needs of individuals in a particular community, it is essential to actively listen to and interpret the patient experience. A proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) analytics engine was applied to social media conversations from an online community for those living with Sjögren’s disease (SjD). Sjögren’s disease is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of exocrine glands, most often presenting with dryness of the eyes and mouth (sicca). Some women with SjD also report vaginal dryness and discomfort[1]lthough individuals with SjD have an increased risk for poor mental health outcomes (e.g., anxiety, depression), the unique role of vaginal dryness and the resulting mental health impact are not well understood.ObjectivesThe objective of the current study was to identify specific mental health impacts associated with vaginal dryness in SjD. We also aimed to explore common topics shared by community members discussing these symptoms to understand their impact on daily living.MethodsData included the public subreddit r/sjogrens, which contained 3779 users and 41,406 posts/comments from October 2012 to March 2022. The proprietary AI engine used for analysis leverages natural language processing techniques to analyze text-based social media data sources. First, the engine used entity recognition to identify the most frequent clinical findings mentioned across all posts/comments. Anxiety and depression were among the most frequently mentioned mental health symptoms in conversations. The engine then extracted the most frequent dryness-related symptoms from the data, which included dry eyes, mouth, throat, and vagina. We then fit 2 logistic regression models where dryness mentions (e.g., ‘dry eyes’, ‘vaginal dryness’) predicted mentions of ‘anxiety’ (model 1) or ‘depression’ (model 2). For our exploratory analysis, we used a guided topic modeling approach to extract conversations about vaginal dryness. This involved providing a list of seed terms (e.g., ‘vaginal dryness’, ‘vaginal pain’) around which the model could converge in identifying word clusters.ResultsIn total, topic modeling revealed 563 posts/comments from 345 users regarding vaginal dryness. “Vaginal dryness” was a significant predictor (P&lt;.001) in both regression models, with adjusted odds ratios between 2.2 and 2.8 (95% CI, 1.9-4.2), suggesting that users mentioning vaginal dryness are 2 to 3 times more likely to mention a negative mental health outcome. Our guided topic modeling approach yielded 3 subtopics within the primary vaginal dryness topic. These included conversational topics about ‘sexual discomfort’, ‘lubrication’, and ‘marital impacts’ across 141 users.ConclusionThese findings suggest that vaginal dryness and sexual dysfunction in SjD are prevalent and associated with specific negative mental health symptoms. Potential daily impacts were illuminated when topic modeling showed conversations centered on physical pain during sex (i.e., dyspareunia) and adverse impacts on marriage/relationships. This social listening approach also revealed management techniques (e.g., lubrication) for individuals experiencing sexual discomfort. Interrogating social media conversations can be invaluable to elucidating patient-reported mental health challenges in rare diseases. It remains unknown how these conversational references to negative mental health symptoms directly translate to specific mental health diagnoses (e.g., anxiety disorder) or treatment challenges in patients with SjD. Future work should comprehensively explore these symptoms so clinicians, caregivers, and patients can better understand and manage mental health in the context of chronic disease.Reference[1]van Nimwegen JF, Arends S, van Zuiden GS, Vissink A, Kroese FGM, Bootsma H. Abstract:
<strong>ABSTRACT</strong> For the majority of local and foreign varieties, Moroccan Picholine and oleasters types, the obtained oil content relating to the fruit fresh weight varied between 14.3% to 23%; excepted, the Picual variety, type oleastre BM2, Manzanille and Cucco varieties and Moroccan Picholine M1 type, which gave oil contents higher than 23%, respectively 23.23%; 23.76%; 23.83%; 25.14% and 25.83% compared to other cultivars. Gordal, Ascolana Dura, and Bouchouk Rkike Varieties, have given average oil content relative to the fresh matter lower than 17% for the local variety Bouchouk Rkike, 16% for Gordal variety and 16.9% for Ascolana Dura variety. Also, in studied oleaster types, noticeable oil contents were obtained especially for the types BM2 (23.76%), BM3 (20.95%), BMR (21.36%), BMM (18.09%). The Gordal and Bouchouk Rkike varieties presented the highest humidy percentage. Ascolana Dura, Cucco and Manzanille, Moroccan Picholine type M1 and oleaster type BM3, BMK, BMR, have the lowest one. By cons, varieties of Bouchouk Laghlide, Bouchouika, Bakhboukh Beldi, Dahbia, Picholine du Languedoc, Picual, Ascolana Tenera, types Moroccan Picholine, G9, G10, S1, S2, M6, type oleasters BM2, BM4, have presented an intermediate percentage of fruit humidity. <strong>Keywords: </strong>Olive (<em>Olea europaea </em>L.), genetic resources, oil richness, fruit humidity. <strong>REFERENCES</strong> Agabbio, M., 1977. Abstract:
The pain and oppression experienced by the immigrants attract more and more researchers and writers to explore their stories and sufferings. Being a diasporic writer, she made collection of short stories explaining the nature, behavior, and experiences while living in a foreign country. Her stories highlight the experiences of displaced people because of partition. She also discussed what immigrants went through and were targeted for their clothing, their skin color and their cultural life. It is really tough for immigrants to acquire the dialect, accent, culture and politics of the country in which they have shifted to. It becomes an identity crisis for these people.

Shieh, David, Mia Sevilla, Anthony Palmeri, et al. "The Shieh Score as a Risk Assessment Instrument for Reducing Hospital-Acquired Pressure Injuries." Journal of Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nursing, July 20, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.1097/won.0000000000000997.

Full text
Abstract:
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Shieh Score's effectiveness in decreasing the rate of hospital-acquired pressure injuries when combined with an early warning notification system and standard order set of preventative measures. DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: This target population was nonpregnant, adult, hospitalized patients on inpatient and observation status at a tertiary hospital (Kaiser Permanente, Baldwin Park, California) during the 2020 year of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A new, risk assessment instrument, the Shieh Score, was developed in 2019 to predict hospitalized patients at high risk for pressure injuries. Data collection occurred between January 21, 2020, and December 31, 2020. When a hospital patient met the high-risk criteria for the Shieh Score, a provider-ordered pink-colored sheet of paper titled “Skin at Risk” was hung at the head of the bed and a standard order set of pressure injury preventative measures was implemented by nursing staff. RESULTS: Implementation of the program (Shieh Score, early warning system, and standard order set for preventive interventions) resulted in a 38% reduction in the annual hospital-acquired pressure injury rate from a mean incidence rate of 1.03 to 0.64 hospital-acquired pressure injuries per 1000 patient-days measured for the year 2020. CONCLUSION: The Shieh Score is a pressure injury risk assessment instrument, which effectively identifies patients at high risk for hospital-acquired pressure injuries and decreases the hospital-acquired pressure injury rate when combined with an early warning notification system and standard order set.

Ethan, Schmidt. "The Church of the Theotokos of the Pharos." Database of Religious History, June 27, 2024. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.12574166.

Full text
Abstract:
The Church of the Theotokos of the Pharos was a chapel constructed in the eighth century in the midst of the Great Palace of Boukoleon in Constantinople (close to a lighthouse that gave the chapel its name) to house the instruments of Christ's Passion, which were soon joined by other celebrated items including the famous Mandylion of Edessa and numerous other relics. It is first attested in the entry of the Chronicle of Theophanes for the year 769 when it was the site of the wedding of Irene of Athens and Leo IV. After the end of Iconoclasm it was rededicated, an occasion which prompted Photios, who was patriarch at the time, to write a homily which offers us precious information regarding the church. In the intervening centuries, its collection of relics continued to grow, a fact attested by the itinerary of Anthony of Novgorod, as well as a list embedded in an account of the palace coup of John 'the Fat' Komnenos in 1200 authored by Nicholas Mesarites, who was skeuophylax of the church and was personally responsible for the care of its contents. During the sack of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade, it avoided direct damage, and together with its contents was turned over into the care of the Latin Emperor Baldwin I. Nevertheless, the days of the Church of the Theotokos of the Pharos were numbered, and it presumably fell into disuse and ruin during the Latin occupation, as its contents were sold to fill the coffers of the beleaguered state. It is not attested in later sources. Relatively little can be ascertained regarding the form of the chapel save that it was small and extremely ornately decorated, features emphasized alike by Photios, Mesarites, Robert of Clari, and that it featured three apses, a central dome, and a narthex, suggesting that it, as restored in the 9th century, may have been an early example of the cross-in-square type. Moreover, given the Byzantine aesthetic predilection for intricate patterning and color, even the brief outlines which survive are suggestive to the historian's imagination, especially those that mention its impressive silver ciborium, its polychrome marble revetments, and the jewel-like opulence of its interior. Moreover, the appearance and especially the function of the chapel inspired that of La Sainte Chapelle (which would come to house much of the Pharos' former contents) as well as the Relic Chapel at Karlstejn.
