Curry, Jane. "Balkan Ecumene and Synthesis in Selected Compositions for Classical Guitar by Dusan Bogdanovic, Nikos Mamangakis and Ian Krouse." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195587.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecumene is a word describing the collective traditions and influence of a geographically and historically recognizable culture; in this study, the inhabitants of the Balkan region. In compositions by Dusan Bogdanovic (b.1955), Nikos Mamangakis (b. 1929) and Ian Krouse (b.1956), Balkan ecumene can be heard shaping modern repertoire for the classical guitar. In this study, relevant geography is first outlined, followed by a detailed investigation of how specific Balkan rhythms, melodies, and harmonies are used in selected works by these composers. The works are: Six Balkan Miniatures by Bogdanovic;, Hassapiko and Tsifteteli from Folk Dance Suite by Mamangakis, and Variations on a Moldavian Hora by Krouse. An exploration of other academic study into musical synthesis gives context to the blending of Eastern European folk music and Western classical art music found here.

Backovic, Jovana. "Between two worlds : approaching Balkan oral music tradition through the use of technology as a compositional and performing medium." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2014. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/53400/.

Full text
Abstract:
This text explores the problems of interpreting musical identity, meaning, and sociocultural value of a compositional work influenced by two traditions with different values: the modernist tradition based on Western European classical heritage, and the oral tradition of the Balkans. It also follows the process of transformation and recreation of the author's musical language: from classical, notation-oriented to a more intuitive, improvisational and live-performance based. Through detailing some of the experiences of the author as a composer and a performer, it also discusses some observations on the ways in which this discrepancy between two traditions and practices has affected and still influences those creative practices in Serbia and the former Yugoslavia that relate to traditional music and its derivations. By identifying musical performance within certain socio-cultural contexts this dichotomy can be highlighted. As a result, a substantial part of this text focuses on investigating the capacity of a technologically assisted composition and performance practice to overcome this issue. Technology is here perceived not only as an instrument for recording, improvising, composing and performing but also as a medium which communicates musical value. In this study, the oral tradition from the Balkans was approached not only as a purely acoustic phenomenon, but it also included a raised awareness of the nature of the continuous fusion of various cultures in the region, as well as existing cultural and religious antagonisms. This study investigates the problems of constructing musical identity as well as the meaning of an author’s creative practice in relation to the socio-cultural environment of its origin, whilst observing its reception by audiences outside the Balkan region. Socio-cultural environments are established through exploring the writings of the authors that depict the Balkans historical, cultural and musical spheres in relation to other cultural practices and influences.

Ignatidou, Artemis. "Four short (hi)stories of a 19th century Greek-European musical interaction, and the cultural outcomes thereof." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/16094.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the impact of western art music ('classical') upon the construction of Greek-European identity in the 19th century. Through the examination of institutions such as the Theatre of Athens that hosted the Italian opera for the better part of the 19th century, the Conservatory of Athens (1873), the Conservatory of Thessaloniki (1914), various 19th century literary societies, press content, scores, publications on music, and state regulations on education, the thesis utilizes both musical, as well as extra-musical material to construct a cultural and social history of Greece's understanding of the 'European' in relation to local Greek society through music between 1840 and 1914. At the same time, it highlights the importance of transnational institutional and interpersonal musical networks between Greece and Europe (mainly England, France, and Germany), to demonstrate how political and aesthetic preferences influenced long-term policy, cultural practice, and musical tradition. While examining the 19th century diplomatic, political, and cultural practices of the expanding 19th century Greek Kingdom, the thesis traces the development of western musical taste and practice in Balkan Greece in relation to the local modernizing society. It highlights the importance of local and European artistic agents and networks, identifies the tension between the projection of European identity and raw acoustic divergence, argues for about the contribution of music to the construction of Greek-European identity, and examines the cultural and political negotiations about the conflicting relationship between Byzantine-Hellenic-European-Modern Greek, as expressed through music and debates on music. The last part of the thesis assembles the 19th century material to explain the relationship between nationalism and musical practice at the turn of the 20th century, and as such the long-term influence of western art music upon the construction of Greek-European national identity.

Abstract:
The Appalachian ballad tradition is alive among a new generation of singers, most of whom learned their songs directly from an oral tradition, either from older singers, or from recordings, or both. This two-disk album — a project in support of Great Smoky Mountains National Park — brings these powerful songs to people who might never have bought a recording or gone to a concert to hear these musicians. They will be delighted with the variety of music here, from the Old World as well as the New. Below is a list of a few of the tracks you can hear:Disc One"Barbry Allen" (Carol Elizabeth Jones), "Thomas the Rhymer" (Archie Fisher), "Lord Thomas and Fair Ellender" (Sheila Kay Adams), "Eggs And Marrowbone" (Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin), "The Sheffield Apprentice" (Martin Simpson, Andy Cutting, and Nancy Kerr), , "The Bold Lieutenant" (Alice Gerrard), "Lord Bateman" (Carol Elizabeth Jones), "The Farmer’s Curst Wife" (Donna Ray Norton), "Mr. Frog Went a-Courtin'" (Bill and the Belles), "Barbara Allen" (Rosanne Cash)

Witkowski, Brian Charles. "Carl Loewe's "Gregor auf dem Stein": A Precursor to Late German Romanticism." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/217070.

Full text
Abstract:
Carl Loewe (1796-1869) was a prolific composer of works for voice and piano with an output exceeding 400 pieces. Just as Schubert pioneered Lieder as a new genre of art music in the nineteenth century, Loewe can be credited for his comparable innovation with the ballad, a narrative song that depicts a story. Though Loewe is often considered a conservative musical figure in the nineteenth century, later romantic composers like Richard Wagner and Hugo Wolf held his ballads in high regard, as they show Loewe's compositional originality in boldly producing drama through the piano-singer format. This document displays how Loewe in his ballad cycle Gregor auf dem Stein, Op. 38 (1834) creates a continuous musical drama to enhance a theological legend. This work is an example of how Loewe foreshadows aspects of later German Romanticism, more fully realized by Wagner and Wolf, through use of musical and dramatic continuity, progressive tonality, motives, and declamatory vocal style.

Hyder, Thomas. "The Legacy of Civil Rights Protest Music: Sweet Honey in the Rock's "The Ballad of Harry T. Moore"." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5314.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the role music played in the Civil Rights Movement as a form of political protest. The first part of the studies analyzed how political protest music was used in the early part of the twentieth-century leading up to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. An analysis of the role of music in African-American culture also provides a historical background to the music-making of the Civil Rights Movement. Specific musical forms such as topical ballads, freedom songs, and spirituals are examined. In addition, musical influences of African culture as well as religious influences on music-making during the Civil Rights Movement are also examined. The second section of the paper investigates the life and murder of NAACP organizer Harry T. Moore of Mims, Florida. Moore's life and death became the subject of a topical ballad, “The Ballad of Harry T. Moore”, composed in 2001 by musical group Sweet Honey In The Rock. An analysis of the song's, literary, political, and musical connections to the ideology and music of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as subject matter, gives evidence that places the song within the tradition of the musical protest activities of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Public Accounts Brazilian is headed for the International Convergence of Accounting. This work approaches the study of disclosure of financial information derived from the recognition of common household goods such as bridges, streets, roads, bridges and squares by the public through the explanatory notes. The overall objective was to validate a proposed structure that promotes the note disclosure of accounting information to its users, in support of decision-making process, proper accountability and the necessary support to the instrumentalization of social control. The survey was conducted in two steps: first, the descriptive study by means of literature and documentary and second, the survey questionnaire applied to public accountants of the City of S??o Paulo Metropolitan Region, composed of 39 municipalities. The sample was defined by non-probabilistic method using an intentional sample, since the intention was to collect data from respondents who represented the opinion of the population. We surveyed the opinions of 33 respondents from 22 municipalities. The data were quantitative treatment. The results indicate that the majority of individuals surveyed agree that the proposed structure presented an explanatory note can be validated as an instrument to promote the disclosure of accounting information to its users, in support of decision-making process, the provision of adequate accounts and the necessary support for the manipulation of social control. However, the minority of subjects that make reservations as to the structure of notes to collaborate with comments that serve as factors that point to the need for improving the structure itself of explanatory notes validated.

The National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) started in the 1950s is the world?s largest public school program and the oldest Brazilian food program. A major change in the PNAE occurred in the 1990s when the resource management and program execution has become responsibility of the states and municipalities. Another change, which brought great attention to the program and that was the focus of this work, took place with the enactment of Law n?11.947/09, which made it mandatory investment of at least 30% of school feeding resources with acquisition of family farming products. This change was the result of the insertion of PNAE in public policies of Food and Nutritional Security, which strengthened the role of the program as an instrument to strengthening family agriculture and guaranteeing the right to healthy food for public school students in the country. This policy opens the possibility of a large institutional market for products from family farms and can assist in the process of collective organization of this category of farmers. The implementation is an important element of the policy cycle, in which decisions are taken and strategies sets through which the objectives of a public policy can be achieved. In this dynamic process there are involved different social actors who need to talk to another. This leads us to reflect on the obstacles and challenges in implementing this policy. We decided to conduct evaluation of the implementation process of the acquisition of family farming products, with approach focused on the dynamics of social actors involved in implementing this policy in the Rio de Janeiro?s municipality. We present a literature review of PNAE trajectory and the difficulties already encountered in the implementation of the acquisition of family farming in large cities, such as the difficulty of dealing with the Public Call instrument, issuing Daps for family farmers and the logistics of delivering products. Then prepared a history of agriculture in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, addressing aspects of agricultural production and existing public policies for this sector. We reconstitute a history of the implementation process of the PNAE?s acquisition of family farming the city, starting from the narratives of farmers, the Consea-Rio and municipal managers. Finally, we present an assessment of (non) implementation of this acquisition, because despite some attempts put in place, the city still does not acquire genres of family farming for school feeding. The balance is the result of analysis of the interaction between the regulatory framework of PNAE at the national level, with political, social and economic characteristics of the local context and indicates the established negotiations and strategies designed for the policy to take effect. We note that the lack of knowledge of City Hall about the reality of family farming and the difficulty of dealing with the normative instruments can be a barrier to implementation. As well as the poor organization of municipal farmers in formal groups and the high degree of urbanization of the municipality.

This research intends to contribute for the improvement of the financial statements of the entities controlled by the City of S??o Paulo. The target-population was determined from mixed capital companies. The data was collected through a questionnaire answered by the senior management. The solicited data was related to "the best practices guide about corporate governance" edited by the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance - IBGC. The answers of the searched companies had been grouped by questions and had been analyzed in group. The main conclusions are: the guidelines of corporate governance haven't been applied by the organizations, the senior management don't have controls to certify that the report doesn't contain any untrue statement of a material fact, and, furthermore, the procedures are different from that expected.
Lynch-Thomason, Sara. "“I’ve Always Identified with the Women:” How Appalachian Women Ballad Singers’ Repertoire Choices Reflect Their Gendered Concerns." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3488.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how contemporary Appalachian women’s gendered experiences influence their choices of ballad repertoire. This inquiry is pursued through a feminist analysis of interviews with six women ballad singers from Madison County, North Carolina. In evaluating the women’s choices of ballads and their commentary on the songs, this thesis draws upon narratological theories as well as concepts from Appalachian traditional music studies. This study finds that women’s repertoire preferences reveal contemporary female concerns for physical safety and political agency. The singers also extract hidden transcripts from ballad texts and use ballads to educate audiences about women’s historic oppression. However, some singers find other factors, such as a song’s tune, or its significance as a part of regional heritage, to be more significant than the narrative content of the songs. This work affirms the contemporary influences of gendered concerns in ballad singing communities.

The purpose of this work is to identify the occurrence of noises that affect the communication process, with accounting statements working as businesses language within the process of account rendering between the social work entities and the City Hall of the City of Tabo??o da Serra - City Council of Social Work (CMAS) and City Hall of Tabo??o da Serra (PMTS). In order to do that, it is based on studies that suggest the existence of a relationship between the accounting process, as business language, and the communication theory, with emphasis on the noises that may interfere in any communication process. The investigation tries to identify the occurrence of noises according to the perception of the users of accounting statements, issues - social work entities and receivers - CMAS and PMTS. The reason for carrying out this research comes from the study carried out by the Commission of Guidance Analysis and Inspection COAF/CMAS, where it was detected that the majority of the registered entities had their registrations cancelled or suspended because of problems with the account rendering and research carried out at CMAS, where it was observed the difficulty of the CMAS in establishing and maintaining partnerships with the social work entities in the city. The communication theory reveals that, some times, the level of knowledge of the issuer and the receiver, the social and cultural context where both of them are inserted, the channel used, the content of the message are responsible for problems that occur in the communication process. Therefore, this theory establishes parameters to determine if the communicative act takes place efficiently and effectively. As the main purpose of accounting is the supply of useful information for taking decisions, if accounting statements are not understood, it means that noises took place during the process and that the communicative act did not fully take place. In order to avoid or diminish the harmful effects of the noise it is essential to know where and how they take place.

Abstract:

In February 2005, a collection predominantly containing medieval ballads was found in the library of Växjö. The collectors were mainly George Stephens, originally from Scotland, and Gunnar Olof Hyltén-Cavallius, both active in Småland in the nineteenth century. In connection with an intital inventory of the material, Magnus Gustafsson, ethnomusicologist at Smålands Musikarkiv, marked ballads of uncertain origin with a question mark.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate 22 of these marked ballads. To be able to compare them with other material we have developed a method to identify differences. By means of the method both the text and the melody are compared and in addition the differences in terms of quality and quantity are assessed. We have compared the collection, named Växjö Stadsbiblioteks Stephenssamling (VSS), with the Swedish edition of medieval ballads, Sveriges Medeltida Ballader (SMB). In the comparison, a ballad forgotten since the mid nineteenth century was retrieved .

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to ascertain if exercising mental training, analysis and research on a musical piece before beginning the physical practicing process will benefit and simplify the learning process. The piece chosen is Eduard Tubin’s “Ballade” for violin and piano. Different sections have been analysed and translated into a narrative from my point of view. Historical background information is presented and the piece is also visual as a graph. From my research I deduct that mental techniques should be much more engaged into the everyday practice routine to avoid frustration and physical injuries, and assist in the learning process.

I presented the piece in my examination with Erik Lanninger playing the piano but the recording is made in the hall of Musikaliska with Iveta Calite as the pianist on 30/05/17.

Abstract:

Emma Eriksson and Christina Henriksson: Mirror mirror on the wall: A study on how ballad texts reflect women as carriers of tradition in nineteenth century Sweden, Växjö: Musikvetenskap C, 10 p 2005.

The aim of this essay is to analyze relations between ballad texts and the lives of female carriers of tradition in nineteenth century Sweden. Four carriers of tradition have been chosen, connected by being informants to Gunnar Olof Hyltén Cavallius, a collector of medieval ballads in Sweden around 1850. The four women are Anna Ehrenström (1786-1857), Catarina Andersdotter (1792-1857), Johanna Gustafva Angel (1791-1869) och Wendela Hebbe (1808-1899). Their lives are seen from a women’s historical perspective.

Although there are uncertainties regarding to what extent the collected repertoire of the four women reflects their repertoire as a whole, some conclusions can be drawn regarding relations between remaining ballads and their lives as women. These relations are traced in textual themes and in textual form (e.g. repetition of words and phrases). The closeness between life situation, and choice and shape of ballad texts, leads us to conclude that these occurrences are due to deliberate choices, and that the ballad text thus mirror the lives of these women.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the Czech community of musicians who play so-called "Balkan music". The research deals with those coming originally from the Czech Republic and who do not have any obvious links to the Balkan peninsula. The emphasis is put on their stereotypical notion about Balkans. The content of the music works they produce and the way how are performed are considered as the key moments how the musicians express their feelings and visions about Balkan. The most of the thesis originates from my personal experience with the "Balkan music" in the Czech environment and from my participation in the Džezvica band. This band is also utilized as an reference model of the "western idea"about the Balkan. The work comprises of both theoretical part denoting the stereotypization and balkanism and the field research carried out during years 2010-2012 in Prague. As an integral part follows the analysis of semi-structured interviews with selected musicians on the (general) topic "balkan music". As the main outcome, the thesis captures and analyses whether we can evaluate the "czech balkanism" with the balkanism and if and how are such musicians' concepts being made.

Abstract:
This Ph.D. thesis deals with the musical phenomenon Balkan music in Prague. The so- called Balkan music (in the sense of Shelemay's 2006 soundscape) is considered to be the result of social negotiating (counterpoint) between the agents, i.e., the Czech musicians and audience, and also those (musicians and audience) who originally come from the Balkan countries. Using the tools of ethnographic research, the thesis explores the nature of this relationship. Specifically, I focus on the very creation of the concept Balkan music in the Czech scene and the role the Balkan migration plays in its formation. It turns out that the very imagination of the 'Balkans' plays a key role in defining the phenomenon, and the form of music itself is the result of the imaginations of (an imaginary) milieu (i.e., stereotypes) that is perceived as culturally distant (Todorova 2009).

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the relationship between music and identity, in a collective of bands that perform Balkan music in Lisbon. Supported by a theoretical and methodological framework based on Ethnomusicology studies on music and identity, I proceeded to analyse the emergence of the founding groups of this collective – Kumpania Algazarra and Farra Fanfarra – presenting an ethnographic description of them. I attempt to understand why is the Balkan music chosen, what are the sound elements used in its representation, what are the processes of musical signification and how the Balkan phenomenon is reflected in the lifestyle of the studied performers. After participant observation and fieldwork analyses, I confirm the existence of an identity construction based on Balkan’s imaginary that the musicians aim to reproduce. I trace hypotheses that lead me to consider this collective as a musically imagined community, based on the sharing of symbols of their own, verifying that music’s evocation of imagined identities can lead to the transformation of the individual and collective identities. I conclude by proposing the analysis of the studied music as a metaphor of a specific social identity, sustained by a musically imagined collective.

Abstract:
The work deals with interethnic contexts in the traditional Bulgarian music, which in the past were often neglected or marginalized for various reasons. Convergent processes which take place as a result of cultural interaction between the Balkan ethnicities are assessed. A role of the long-term affiliation of the Balkan region with one state structure (the Ottoman Empire) is examined as one of the factors, which could significantly help mutual contacts between involved ethnicities. The author's starting points are based on the philological concept of the Balkan Linguistic Union, in which a set of phenomena and convergent tendencies in genetically unrelated languages of the Balkan area are researched. The author raises the question whether it is possible to formulate a similar thesis in the field of music and to define a notional Balkan Music Union based on the assessment of the main converging processes. For this purpose, two distinctive phenomena, which are both present in the Bulgarian folklore as well as, to certain extent, in a broader Balkan context, are selected. Musical and cultural interaction between two ethnic groups is examined at the ceremony of the Nestinarstvo/Anastenaria, folk mysteries which culminate with a dance on hot coals and is practised by small communities of Bulgarians and...

Abstract:
Vítězslav Novák wrote his second opus of choral ballads, Two Ballads on Words of Moravian Folk Verses Op. 23 Vražedný milý and Neščasná vojna, in 1900. He set Moravian folk song texts from contemporary song collections to music, the first version was for mixed choir and piano four hands, followed by an orchestration for symphony orchestra. The ballads were a great contribution to choir repertoire and have made their mark in choral concert life, as evidenced by the press. Despite such a great interest, the orchestral score has never been printed and is only available in manuscript. Even critical literature did not deal with this topic more specifically, so there is still some ambiguity, for example, concerning premieres or the state of the sheet music.
