Abstract:
SummaryThe article explores the works of Jurgis Baltrušaitis on depraved perspectives. In particular, it examines his references to Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher in the books dedicated to anamorphoses, aberrations, Egyptomania and distorting mirror’s reflections. The paper questions what led Baltrušaitis to the dialogue with the German visionary. The close reading of Baltrušaitis works reveals that in Kircher’s pre-modern thinking the art historian found those domains of between-the-two, communalities of art and science, art and nature, art and social imaginary that have become more important in postmodernist period. Kircher’s treatises, previously uninterpreted in the context of art history, encouraged the development of the broader studies of images focused on visual phenomena that remained for a long time outside the autonomous field of art history. Without privileging an aesthetic and evolutionary approach in art history, Baltrušaitis’ works reveal anthropological and ontological dimensions of images. They disclose that the image is always related to visual experience and imagination, which takes us beyond the horizon of reality.

Abstract:
This essay examines Jurgis Baltušaitis’ writings and shows its connections with the works of Henri Focillon, Aby Warburg and Athanasius Kircher. Baltušaitis oriented his interdisciplinary analyses in art history and cultural studies. The essay aims to demonstrate the complexity and importance of Baltrušaitis’ ideas that are developed in the comparative research of medieval art history, depraved perspectives, aberrations and illusions. Those works are linked by the philosophy of image and imagination that stand at the crossroads between abstractness and concreteness, myth and history, reality and illusion, rational and irrational forces, the East and West. This article tries to shape Baltrušaitis’ legacy by offering an insight into his thinking which unites various research topics, typically excluded from positivistic studies. It reveals the underlying structures of cultural imaginary in which cross-cultural interactions take place. It argues for the revaluation of his oeuvre by attending to the theoretical concerns behind his historical research program.

Abstract:
The object of the paper is Prometheism in Baltrušaitis’s and Papini’s epistolary legacy (letters in Italian that Baltrušaitis wrote to Papini, 153 of which are stored in the Manuscripts Department of the National Library of Russia and in Papini’s archive in Fiesole, Italy) and in the creative work of both authors that was published at the end of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century in the Russian and Italian periodical press and in collections of poetry and prose. Baltrušaitis and Papini had a common viewpoint on creative work: it was Prometheism. Its ideological grounds, however, were different: philosophical conceptions of Solovyov’s “Godman” and Nietzsche’s “superhuman”. Baltrušaitis’s Promethean viewpoint is based on the philosophy of Solovyov, according to which “God-man” is a synthesis of humanity and divinity, whereas Papini’s Promethean viewpoint refers to Nietzsche’s idea of the “superhuman” as an absolute category, a man who became God. Connections between Baltrušaitis’s and Papini’s Prometheism, political attitudes of both authors, and the differences in these attitudes were determined by diverse philosophical fundamentals of Russian and Italian Prometheism.

Abstract:
The article discusses the problems of poetic rhythm in two aspects. The first concerns the possibility of awareness and conscious modelling of various aspects of poetic rhythm; the second is related to the manifestation of similar or even identical tendencies in the rhythmic structures of various authors who belong to different eras and literary trends and even writing in different languages. Works from bilingual authors such as Vladimir Nabokov and Jurgis Baltrušaitis are of the particular interest. The first half of the article focuses on how the concept of rhythm proposed in the book by Andrei Bely (1910) influenced the poetic practice. Before Bely, it had been implicit that the choice of stanzaic and metric forms was usually conscious for authors, while Bely demonstrated that poets and their audience can be aware of verse rhythm as well. After the publication of his results, Bely and other poets of a predominantly Symbolist approach began to pay attention to the rhythmic structure of the verse and made attempts to model it. Considered are the following problems: a) how do poetic meters relate to rhythmic forms; b) to what extent can the rhythmic momentum be recognized by the author, and to what extent can the author influence it; and c) how can the author compose verses in accordance with a pre-selected rhythmic model. In the second half of the article, the rhythm of iambic and trochaic tetrameters in Russian poetic heritage of Jurgis Baltrušaitis is analysed in comparison with the rhythm of his Lithuanian verses. As it turns out, despite the obvious differences in the prosody of the Lithuanian and Russian languages, the rhythmic structure of his poems obeys the same regularities. In the final part of the article, possible explanations of rhythmic patterns are proposed and an outline of the typology of the rhythm of the binary tetrameters is given.

Abstract:
Milestones of European symbolism of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century have been indicated and the meaning of prometheism as fundamental category of symbolism has been determined. It has been explored that the origins of Lithuanian symbolism do not only date back to Russian symbolism but through it they are connected with the broader co-European context. It has been established that one of the fundamental categories of Baltrušaitis’ and Papini’s viewpoint is prometheism, its political aspect characteristic to both authors has been analysed. It has been determined that Baltrušaitis’ promethean viewpoint is based on the philosophy of Solovyov according to which “God-man” is the synthesis of humanity and divinity; whereas Papini’s promethean viewpoint refers to Nietzsche’s idea of “superhuman” as an absolute category, a man who became God. The connection of Papini’s identity metamorphoses and prometheism viewpoint has been investigated; it has been demonstrated that prometheism influenced the twists of Baltrušaitis’ intellectual biography and the changes of his relation with Lithuanity. The connections of Baltrušaitis’ and Papini’s prometheism with the political attitude of authors has been analysed, it has been established that the differences of this attitude were determined by diverse philosophical fundamentals of Russian and Italian prometheism.
Darbe pažymėtos XIX a. pabaigos – XX a. pradžios Europos simbolizmo gairės ir nustatyta prometėjizmo kaip pamatinės simbolizmo kategorijos reikšmė.

Abstract:
Individually, in the J. Baltrušaitis‘s poesy reflects aesthetic of different epochs, specially mystical world, a try to close on God‘s and being‘s mysteries in that way, wherein the man could find shelter, sanctity, freedom of mind. In the poesy could be found some interpretanciu, which let us to relate the creation of J. Baltrusaitis with the ancient myths (Daedalus and Icarus, Promethian Rebellion, Ariadne’s clew, Sisyph etc.), in which the harmonious personalities, exaltation of the order is associated with the ancient culture. In the poets creation are strong Bible‘s reflectors, there are medieval signatures like: piligrims, ringing ecclesiastical bells, chaos of the crowd, implicit on God, surreality nighmares, visions. The individuality of lyric subject, wish to discover and know typical attitudes for Renaissance man. In Baltrušaitis‘s poesy Renaissance epoch reflects an attention to a person, its unseen, search of humanity measurements, watchout for antiquity. And in the creation are developted the theme of fatalistic destiny, regret for running time and the natural temporality of values, an impression of world‘s instability — baroque signs, which are reflected on metaphor, special support of baroques aesthetic, which prepare the text for possible intertextual links. Abstract:
Our research aimed to understand, in the field of contemporary architecture, the reasons for a significant attraction for what Jean Epstein could have appointed the Devil cinema. So that a response can be made, we first sought to identify the anthropological, philosophical, artistic, scientific and technical facilitations, from which the relations between the two disciplines have become so pervasively present. We also reversed the perspective trying to show how the technical environment (midst ?), the digital era (epoch ?) in which contemporary architecture is, activate or reactivate particular historical sensitivity to the concepts of time, event, variability and movement. The cinema, as a technological state of fact, continues to invent itself and expand. It disrupts the outlook, affects scopic regimes, the ways of seeing which are also ways to build, requiring an aesthetic of modification beyond its own sphere of expression. So we asked, on the side of film and architectural practices, the interest to work in an area of un-definition, a disciplinary interval and on the side of aesthetics, we looked for an opportunity to start with the name of Archicinema, its configuration. To exemplify the technical conditions, the critical operations and topological arrangements for this type of approach, we chose to study more specifically in a large set of examples, the architectural speculations and kinematic, robotic, computer-driven experiments of François Roche. Finally, we got involved closer to his fictional practice in order to better decipher its issues and effects, both on the poetic or political side of his work

Abstract:
Jurgis Baltrušaitis is one of the most representative scholars of the New Formalist School led by Henri Focillon in Paris during the first half of the 20th century. By going through Baltrušaitis’ publications, an interesting case of study is the representation of Gilgamesh. The Lithuanian student wrote a long genealogy of this form that goes from ancient Mesopotamian East to Christian medieval West. We will use Gilgamesh’s shape to explore and compare the formalist method of Baltrušaitis, the iconological method of Panofsky and the relation between words and pictures by Schapiro. In doing so, we will try to re-establish a bond between the visual outline of a man with two specular beasts and the written legends of Gilgamesh and Daniel.
