Full textThis dissertation shows that Fulfulde and Bambara language development is both comparable to language development in other world languages and is influenced by the phonetic and phonological characteristics of the languages of the environment, including phonotax. In fact, while findings on babbling data indicate that for vowel-like sounds there is no evidence of early specialization, for consonant-like sounds, universal aspects coexist with evidence of early specialization. Still at the babbling stage, analysis of consonant-vowel co-occurrence patterns in protosyllables shows an overrepresentation of labial + central combinations and cases of coronal + anterior in monolingual as well as in multilingual children's productions. At the first words stage, the acquisition of control of vocal cords' vibration, the velum and quantity is still ongoing until the age of 3 in children exposed to Fulfulde and Bambara. Moreover, the study of phonological development in Fulfulde and Bambara shows that universal aspects (related especially to biomechanical and aerodynamic constraints) and specialization's indices coexist, even at the first words stage. The study supports the existence of continuity between babbling and first words in children and describes multilingualism in the city of Douentza (Mali), where multilingual children participating in this study are growing up

Full textThis dissertation is a series of linguistic essays on bambara, a language mainly spoken in mali, but which also is the principal language for millions of people in west africa. These essays deal with standard bambara, and not with a special dialect. They concern tonology, morphology, syntax, and some lexical points. They are based on a very important corpus, oral and written, which comes from the region of bamako and segou for the main part. The three first chapters are about tones: the elucidation of schemes and rules, the discussion of minor schemes, and the schemes that are partially or totally imposed. Chapter 4 is about the organization of the sentence, lexical classes and functions. The chapters 5 to 9 are concerned with the analysis of nominal constructions, and the way they may combine with each other. Chater 10 deals with verbal morphology. Chapter 11 is about our conception of complex sentences; we propose a new typology based on the notions of dependence, independence and interdependence. Chapter 12 is about the ka constructions, either consecutive clauses or verbal complements. Chapter 13 and 14 are about particules and adverbs. The last three chapters deal with the "margins" of the language, especially with ideophonics adverbs and slang

Full textThe introduction of terms originating from bambara and french into fulfulde depends on the power and prestige of the communities speaking bambara and french. The integration of these terms into the phonological system of the fulfulde is absolute. At the morphological level, of the loanwords, the nouns shows a discrepancy frm the structure and classification of fulfulde nouns

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the lexical semantic analysis of -bamba, -gcina and -Iondoloza. In chapter 1 the aim of the study is stated. Properties about the lexical semantic analysis of the verbs -bamba, -geina, and -Iondoloza as well as the generative lexicon theory by Pustejovsky (1996) are discussed. The theoretical framework and the organisation of study are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter 2 addresses in more detail the type system for semantics. A generative theory of the lexicon includes multiple levels of representation for different types of lexical information needed. Among such levels are Argument Structure, Event Structure, Qualia Structure and Leical Inheritance Structure. Chapter 2 also represents in more detail thé structure of qualia and the role they play in distributing the functional behaviour of words and phrases in composition. Chapter 3 examines the lexical semantic analysis of the verbs -bamba, -gcina and - londoloza to account for the range of selectional properties of the NP subject argument of these verbs, and the various interpretations that arise in terms of composition with their complement arguments. The polysemous behaviour of the verbs -bamba, -gcina and - londoloza are examined in sentence alternation constructions with respect to event structure properties. The lexical representation in terms of argument structure and the event structure of the verbs -bamba, -gcina and -Iondoloza in different sentences are also investigated. Chapter 4 is the conclusion, summarising the findings of all the previous chapters in this study on lexical semantic analysis of the 'hold' verbs -bamba, -gcina and -Iondoloza in Xhosa.

Full textThe thesis aims to analyze the phenomenon of reformulations in the context of bilingual French-Bamanankan interactions in the classes of elementary shool in Mali. The study is based on a corpus of 39h 35 min video and audio recordings consisting of sequences of classes and interviews. The sequences, filmed in 12 classes of the 4th year, concern two non-linguistic disciplines: geography, taught in Bamanankan L1, and observation sciences, taught in French L2. The films were transcribed and analyzed using the CLAN software which allowed the extraction of all instances of annotated reformulations. The analysis carried out on them, both qualitatively and quantitatively, leads to several results. It turns out that reformulations are an omnipresent phenomenon in the discourse of interactants, teachers, and students, in geography as well as in observational sciences, in L1 as in L2. These activities participate in the construction of knowledge in students, which could be verified with the help of an understanding assessment. The comparison of teachers shows that experience, among other factors, affects the production and management of reformulations. Based on observed practices, proposals, arguing for an optimization of the use of didactic reformulations and all bilingual practices, were formulated as contributions in the direction of improving the quality of teaching in Mali, or even in West Africa

Full textThis research is an ethnographic approach of writing practices in the cotton-growing region of Southern Mali. The setting is multilingual; different ways of acquiring literacy are available: adult literacy classes, schooling (bilingual or not), Islamic learning. These practices involve three languages: French, the official language, still dominant as a written language; Bambara, which has been developed for adult literacy classes and bilingual schools ; and Arabic, mainly used for religious purposes. Becoming literate involves studying in one or more of these educational settings, and often other experiences, especially when migrating for work in urban places. Those different experiences of writing are analysed as different "literate socializations". These paths to literacy are considered more specifically for one village. The study of written pieces can give a deeper view of the practices villagers engage in. This study relies on the analysis of a corpus of written documents, especially notebooks. They deal with various topics and display a number of types of text (recipes, accounts, chronicles, etc. ), and they are often multilingual. One result of the research is that Bambara is actually used as a written language, but writers who are also proficient in French tend to preserve the higher status of the official language. Our analysis support the hypothesis that keeping a personal notebook is a way of objectifying the existence of a domain "of one's own" (private but not intimate). The uses of literacy are essential to understand how is currently redefined, in this area, the line between public and private
