Abstract:
The linguistic reality in Bamako, Mali, has made it commonplace that most interactions are performed in a language combining Bambara and French. The reason is certainly that Bamako, as some researchers suggest, is an ethnic and linguistic melting pot. This “hybrid” language seems to have downgraded the notion of language delimitations, hence affecting consequently the identity of each language. In other words, Bambara seems to be an excuse for escaping the successful use of French while interactions in Bambara are significantly dominated by French. It is believed that such a situation favours none of the two languages at play. Already, initial observation has made it possible to assert that the most perceptible manifestations of code-switching in this particular context are intrasentential and extrasentential. To confirm this claim, the present paper will adopt a conversation analytical approach, based on the recording of naturally occurring language.

Abstract The Bambara foot is represented as a rhythmic unit which can be disyllabic or monosyllabic. Foot-parsing is both segmentally and morphologically conditioned. A foot can coincide with a morpheme or be smaller than a morpheme, but it cannot include more than one morpheme. The main factors for foot-parsing are: types of initial consonants, types of internal consonants and vocalic combinations; directionality (left to right) is a secondary factor. Segmentation into feet is relevant for the realization of tone. Disyllabic feet are subdivided into two types, heavy and light; heavy feet have a long vowel in the initial syllable, while light feet have a short vowel in this position which is susceptible to elision (depending on phonotactics). It seems unnecessary to postulate stress in Bambara. The views of previous researchers on the Bambara foot are critically analyzed.

Abstract The association between sentential negation and tense has solid foundations in the literature. It has even been argued that sentential negative markers consist of a Tense feature (De Clercq 2018, 2020). This paper adduces the first results from a typological study and data from Bambara in support of this claim. In addition, the Bambara data also point to the morphological realisation of present or default tense, to a hierarchy for tense and to a position for sentential negation in that hierarchy.

This article gives a cognitively based account of polysemous transitivity alternations, which are Agent-preserving with some verbs and Object-preserving with others. The data from three languages – Asiatic Eskimo, Boumaa Fijian and Bambara – are presented. It is argued that the mechanism of the distribution of the meanings of these TAs is semantic in nature and does not depend upon the coding technique used by a language.

The article deals with the concepts of charisma and leadership in two non-Western Islamic cultures from the linguistic perspective. The concepts of charisma and charismatic leadership have a long tradition of studying in sociology, political science and psychology since M.Weber. Charisma can be defined as compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion in others. Cognates of this Greek word are found in most European languages. The English word leader has been borrowed by many related and non-related languages. The questions we are addressing in this article are: How to translate charisma and leader into Bambara and Persian? What Bambara and Persian words can be translated with the English words charisma and leader? What is the origin of these words in Bambara and Persian? How these words function within the two languages and two cultures? To answer these questions we analyze a wide range of lexicographic and textual sources. We come to a conclusion, that in both languages the vocabularies consist of layers of different origin: Soninke and Manding in Bambara, Iranian and Altaic in Persian, Arabic in both languages. Despite long histories of Islamization both languages, though influenced by Arabic, have kept their core vocabularies in what concerns charisma and leadership.

Abstract This paper revisits a classical, yet fundamental, discussion of theoretical computational linguistics: the computational complexity of natural languages. Past studies have revealed that syntax, as observed in Swiss-German, is not weakly context-free. Concerning morphology, Culy (1985) employed a construction in Bambara to show that morphology is not weakly context-free; however, Manaster-Ramer (1988) pointed out that the Bambara case can be problematic because the wordhood of the construction is reliant on special tonal behaviors, and it is ambiguous whether the behaviors belong to the morphological domain. This raises doubts about whether the case can be considered a genuine morphological phenomenon. In this paper, we argue that Classical Ainu, a language we examine, also defies weak context-freeness at the morphological level. The construction we introduce is unambiguously morphological because this language’s valency-sensitive structure and valency-changing operations, such as noun incorporation, preclude its grammatical interpretation as syntactic.

Cultural identity is linked to language. Malian literature, like all literature, has an identity. This cultural identity presents its particularity in that it makes it possible to identify in certain cases the ethnicity of the author through the use of his mother tongue in his writings. Thus in the short story entitled Le Bac de Cabri mort by Mamadou Konaté that we have chosen to study there are words and expressions from the author's mother tongue or one of the national languages ​​of Mali. Which clearly shows that the mother tongue faces the French language which was the official language in Mali before becoming a working language. We tried to understand the author's choice in this short story regarding the use of terms and expressions relating to the Bambara language.

The paper focuses on the processes of transfer of linguistic skills from the learners’ mother tongue to the discovered second language. Language transfer and acquisition promote the psychological adaptation and orientation of target learners and teachers. The acquisition of a second language uses the psychological theory which defines the mechanism of reception and production of a new language by the brain. Psychological theory is used to study, develop and implement this paper. An exploratory research method is used to arrive at the results. In this case, the qualitative approach was used to collect qualitative data and information on this subject matter. The aspiration is to describe the challenges that learners face in discovering and using the second language at school. The quality of education depends on the quality of the language of instruction at school.

“Many African languages have a long written tradition, e.g. Ge'ez, Kiswahili, Hausa, etc.” reads the summary of panel 21 of the AEGIS conference “African Manuscripts and Museum Collections in Europe”. The list could be extended to include other names familiar to a wider audience, e.g., Fula(ni) (Fulfulde), Manding (Mandenkan, Bambara, Dyula, Mandinka), Wolof, Asante (Akan), Songay. The Kanuri language however, needs some introduction. This is to a certain extent a historical paradox, because Kanuri was in fact the first African language to be extensively documented in the middle of the 19th century by Sigismund Koelle. In 1854 Koelle published two large volumes on Kanuri grammar and an anthology of oral narratives (1854a, 1854b). Remarkably, four tales from the Koelle's Kanuri anthology found their way into Volume 3 of the 3rd edition of the Grimm Brothers’ Children and Household Tales (1856).

Abstract In this paper, I argue for an analysis that treats the ba construction in Chinese as a case of shape preservation-induced movement structure. Specifically, the robust preverbal adverbial and PP expressions and the mandatory ba-DP movement in ditransitive structures are both derived from a violable head directionality macroparameter under the Symmetrical Syntax Hypothesis, which allows directionality parameters to examine word order throughout the derivation. In addition to being able to capture the parallel syntactic properties of Scandinavian object shift, this account receives further empirical support from word order facts of Archaic Chinese and Bambara.

Purpose: The purpose of this letter is to draw attention to recent literature regarding the communication abilities and experiences of Autistic people and the potential for detrimental effects on mental health and service provision resulting from behavior modification programs. I will argue that viewing Autistic communication as characterized by pragmatic language impairment is inconsistent with evidence of effective and positive communication between Autistic people and with the social model of disability. Conclusion: Proposals for interventions targeting Autistic people should carefully weigh the costs and benefits for Autistic people and should integrate the perspectives of Autistic people.

Moving beyond ecocriticism, this essay argues that an ecosocial reading of narratives of the Atlanta child murders (1979–81) is better able to examine the sometimes functional, sometimes broken interactions between sociocultural circumstances and particular urban ecologies. Far from latching onto an idealized, utopian sense of a restorative natural world, the ecosocial approach introduced here focuses critical attention on the traumatized and traumatic social and cultural histories that play out in particular natural as well as built environments. In various ways, child-murders narratives by Toni Cade Bambara, Tayari Jones, and others bear the conflicting burdens of memory and forgetting, of old and new and never–changing and ever–changing Souths. They do so in large part by acknowledging ecosocial dysfunctions as one way of moving, however provisionally and problematically, toward a more grounded, more communal idea and practice of interrelatedness.

This article focuses on Zadie Smith’s experimental short story ‘Kelso Deconstructed’, published in her first short story collection Grand Union (2019). The story reimagines the last day in the life of Kelso Cochrane, who migrated to Britain during the post-war period as part of the Windrush generation, and who was murdered in 1959. The aim of this article is twofold. Firstly, I situate ‘Kelso Deconstructed’ within Smith’s preoccupations with matters of intimacy, writing and resistance in Grand Union, and in her essay collection Intimations (2020). Secondly, I examine Smith’s rewriting of this historical event through her use of intertextual references to Toni Morrison, Francis Ponge, Leo Tolstoy and Toni Cade Bambara. Ultimately, this article argues that Smith uses multiple strategies to create proximity between readers and the historical events depicted, and to deconstruct the symbol of Kelso Cochrane to instead offer an intimate representation of a singular human being.

The Arabic text which is translated here describes a ceremony in which al-ḥājj Umar Tal, founder of a jihād and state in the Western Sudan in the mid-nineteenth century, sought to transmit his temporal and spiritual authority to his oldest son, Ahmad al-Kabīr. The ceremony occurred in 1860, just as the Umarian armies were about to embark upon a campaign against the ‘pagan’ Bambara kingdom of Segu. While the transfer of power to Aḥmad is very clearly stated in the text, the ceremony did not resolve the issue nor the conflict among the sons of Umar, which continued until the French conquest at the end of the century. The explanation for the continuing conflict lies partly in the loose structure of the original Umarian jihād against ‘paganism’ and partly in divisions among the faithful over the jihād against alleged ‘apostasy’ which Umar undertook at the end of his life against the Muslim Fulbe of Masina. The text also shows the close links between the Umarian movement and the Tijaniyya order and the ways in which important political statements can be couched in Sufi language.

AbstractThis article explores a rather understudied feature of West African oral epics, namely its role as a channel for the transmission and popularization of Islamic religious knowledge. The documentary basis of analysis is provided by a set of oral texts performed in the Bambara language by a Malian griot (i.e. a member of an endogamous bards' lineage) and marketed in audiotape recorded form through the channels of local informal economy. Special attention is devoted to the multiple roles played by the bard in his complex relationship to Islamic knowledge. In spite of his abundant references to learned, sometimes even esoteric doctrines in texts appealing to a broad, undifferentiated audience, at a closer look the main goal of his popularizing attitude appears to be the reassertion of the legitimacy of traditionally trained local scholars and religious leaders, acting as his patrons, through a compelling magnification of their superior knowledge. What is at stake is precisely the defence of a locally rooted epistemological model against the challenges coming from Islamic reformers who promote alternative (and more rationalising) understandings of religious knowledge and authority. Seizing the new opportunities offered by the mediatization of his verbal art, the griot engages effectively in the religious debates that animate an increasingly globalised national public sphere.

Тональные языки могут значительно различаться по тому, какую функциональную нагрузку несёт тон. Карлос Гуссенховен предложил ввести понятие тональной плотности языка, однако до сих пор не предпринималось попыток сделать это понятие практически применимым.В статье предлагается методика определения индекса тональной плотности (ИТП) языков. ИТП понимается как отношение числа тонем или маркированных тонов к числу сегментных единиц в тексте некоторой протяжённости. Ключевыми понятиями при этом являются:— тонема — тональный контур, который задействован в выражении лексического или грамматического значения;— тональный домен — последовательность сегментов, на которой реализуется тонема;— маркированный тон — часто выделяется в языках с двухуровневыми тональными системами, в таких языках слоги или моры, не несущие маркированного тона, могут считаться бестоновыми;— базовая сегментная единица — слог или мора. Как слог, так и мора может быть принят(а) в качестве базовой единицы, при этом числовые значения ИТП для моросчитающих языков будут различаться (таким образом, можно говорить о «морном ИТП» и «слоговом ИТП»). При этом важен вопрос простоты или сложности практической сегментации базовых единиц: в некоторых языках выделяют до четырёх степеней тяжести слога; иногда даже в близкородственных языках слоги идентичной структуры получают различную трактовку в отношении слогового веса, и т. п., что затрудняет подсчёт числа мор. Африка), языке с 5 уровневыми тонами, индекс составил 105,8. Tonal languages may differ considerably with respect to the functional load of the tone. Carlos Gussenhoven suggested the notion of tonal density of a language, however, to our knowledge, there have been no attempts to apply it in practice.In this paper, a method of calculation of the Tonal Density Index (TDI) is proposed. Under TDI we understand the ratio of the number of tonemes or marked tones to the number of segmental units in a text. The key notions related to the TDI are the following:— toneme i.e. a tonal contour which is relevant for the expression of a lexical or grammatical meaning;— tonal domain, i.e. a sequence of segments to which a toneme is associated;— marked tone, which is often postulated in languages with two-level tonal systems. In such languages, syllables or morae which do not carry the marked tone can be considered toneless;— a basic segmental unit may be a syllable or a mora. Consequently, two kinds of TDI can be calculated, the “moraic TDI” and the “syllabic TDI”. The key question is the applicability of segmentation into these units. Some languages distinguish up to four degrees of the syllable weight; sometimes syllables of identical structures are interpreted differently in what concerns their syllabic weight, even in closely related languages; such factors may considerably complicate the count of moras. On the other hand, in other languages, identification of syllables may be problematic; in such languages, the “moraic TDI” would be easier to calculate.Three languages of different types have been taken to exemplify the method of calculation of the “syllabic TDI”. In Navajo (Southern Athabascan group, USA), a language with a marked high tone, the TDI equals 35.8. In Bambara (Western Mande, Mali), a two-level language with tonal domains, the TDI equals 70. In Eastern Dan (South Mande group, Côte d’Ivoire), a language with 5 level tones, the TDI equals 105.8.

In an oral discourse passed down through many generations, the village elder Vase Kamara describes how a slave named Zo Musa Kòma founded the ancient town of Musadu in Guinea-Conakry, and he explains how the legendary Kamara ancestor Foningama later became a leader in Musadu. We tentatively date some elements of the Zo Musa stories to about the fourteenth and fifteenth century, when the Manding began to assimilate and push the Southwestern and Eastern Mande-speaking peoples from the Musadu area in the Konyan to the forest. Some of the Foningama related accounts seem to correspond to the era when the Kamara who settled in the Konyan became active in the sixteenth-century Mane “invasions.”Stories about Musadu's founding provide information about these movements and help bridge the histories of the savanna and forest peoples who live in Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and Liberia. The Musadu legend links the Konyaka to their kinsmen who live in the traditional heartland of the Mali empire in present-day northern Guinea and southern Mali. In addition, some Manding, Vai, Loma, Gola, Kpelle, Konor, Dan, and Mano trace their origins to Musadu, and reflect one Loma writer's claim that “all of the tribes in Liberia are from Musadu, or have some association with Musadu” (Korvali 1960:7).The main actors are Manding (Mandekan) speakers who migrated to the Mau/Gbè and Konyan regions of western Côte d'Ivoire and southern Guinea respectively. The Mauka/Gbèka and Konyaka are members of the Northern Mande language group and are classified as Maninka (Malinke). The Bamana (Bambara), Dyula (Jula), and Vai are other Northern Mande speakers. AbstractNarrative has been one of the major concerns in social science research ever since the mid-twentieth century, and the area of second language acquisition (SLA) is no exception. Researchers have turned to the investigation of learner-produced narratives to extend the understanding of many key concepts in SLA theory. This type of research approach takes language learning beyond the acquisition/assimilation of linguistic structures and is meant to focus on learners as social selves actively involved in the construction of a linguistic identity. In this paper, I investigate how learners of English as a foreign language, whose first languages are Arabic, Chinese, French, Hindi, Hungarian, Kurdish, Parsi (Farsi), Romanian, Russian, and Spanish, narrate their own experiences of learning this language. This investigation is based on a dataset of language learning experience written accounts with reference to learner life events. In the analysis, I apply two analytical frameworks for the examination of the data: a) grounded theory procedures (Corbin and Strauss 2007), which are often employed with narrative data, and b) a “positioning approach to narratives” (Bamberg 1997) in order to detect the learners’ positioning strategies in the hope of revealing their linguistic identity claims in relation to who they are and how they make sense of their language learning experience. Results show how the learners position themselves in relation to “the other” (teachers, family, fellow learners, and the researcher), to themselves as learners, and to the language they learn.

The approach used in the research of Language Style in Geguritan "Mung Sliramu" by Bambang Sulanjari uses a stylistic approach. The data used in this study is descriptive data in the form of phrases, words, and sentences. The primary data source of the study was the geguritan "Mung Sliramu" by Bambang Sulanjari. By using secondary data sources in the form of articles, documents, books that lead to stylistic studies. This analysis technique uses descriptive analysis, done by describing the style of language in Bambang Sulanjari's Mung Sliramu geguritan. Data collection techniques with read and record techniques. The results of this study showed that in the guritan "Mung Sliramu" by Bambang Sulanjari found some stylistic usage; (1) linkage language style, (2) comparative language style, (3) purwakanthi guru swara, and (4) purwakanthi basa.

This study aimed at descrsibing language, power and ideology of SBY’s speech about receiving Doctor Honoris Cause degree from SOKA University, Japan. In someone’s speech, there is a relationship among language, power, and ideology which can be seen through the language use by the speaker. The analysis used was Critical Discourse Analysis method presented by Thomas N. Huckin. It was started form analyzing the features in the text as whole, in sentence-level, word-level and it was continued by doing contextual interpretation. The result showed that through the language use in SBY’s speech, there was a power and the purpose of the speaker in which the power was felt to increase from the beginning, it was felt a weak power and in the middle of the speech it was felt a strong power. The power was increased because it was based on who was aimed at and the ideology is clearly seen in the last part of the speech given in which SBY wanted to be more appreciated

This paper presents an analysis on political speech of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), the former president of Indonesia at the Indonesian conference on “Moving towards sustainability: together we must create the future we want”. Ideologies are closely linked to power and language because using language is the commonest form of social behavior, and the form of social behavior where we rely most on ‘common-sense’ assumptions. The objectives of this study are to discuss the common sense assumption and ideology by means of language use in SBY’s political speech which is mainly grounded in Norman Fairclough’s theory of language and power in critical discourse analysis. There are two main problems of analysis, namely; first, what are the common sense assumption and ideology in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s political speech; and second, how do they relate to each other in the political discourse? The data used in this study was in the form of written text on “moving towards sustainability: together we must create the future we want”. A qualitative descriptive analysis was employed to analyze the common sense assumption and ideology in the written text of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s political speech which was delivered at Riocto entro Convention Center, Rio de Janeiro on June 20, 2012. One dimension of ‘common sense’ is the meaning of words. The results showed that the common sense assumption and ideology conveyed through SBY’s specific words or expressions can significantly explain how political discourse is constructed and affected by the SBY’s rule and position, life experience, and power relations. He used language as a powerful social tool to present his common sense assumption and ideology to convince his audiences and fellow citizens that the future of sustainability has been an important agenda for all people. Purpose. The paper studies the golden saber from the Military-Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineer and Signal corps (The Artillery Museum).Results. Based on the analysis of the construction and decoration of the blade, tang and guard it is supposed that this sample of long-bladed weapon belongs to the group of “chechuga” sabers. In the original configuration the saber had the hilt decorated with gemstones and scabbard covered with leather with fittings made of copper alloy. The blade bears bilingual inscription and it means that this piece of weapon belongs to the sabers granted to the specific person with indication of his name. This saber was granted to Kalmykian noyon (prince) Bambar for his victory over Kazakhs in 1762. The analysis of archive documents allowed to understand the circumstances of the battle of Feb, 17, 1762 as the Empress Ekaterina II ordered to grant a saber to Bambar for that battle. Bambar brought this saber to Qing empire during the “Torgud escape” in 1771. In the beginning of 20th century during the suppression of the Yihetuan (Boxer) uprising Russian officers paid attention to the saber with the golden inscription in Russian, so the saber was handed to the command of Kwantung fortress and then sent to Saint Petersburg in 1903.Conslusion. The saber is of high scientific value, as it is the only example of the weapons of the Kalmyk princes, on which there is a gold inscription indicating the name of the owner of the saber. This saber is a unique relic of the Russian-Kalmyk relations of the 18th century.

Dalam penelitian, penulis menggunakan teori kode verbal dan kode nonverbal dan menggunakanpendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis deskriptif dengan teknik triangulasi. Objek penelitian iniberupa video rekaman pidato SBY dan Jokowi dalam memimpin sidang kabinet paripurna. Hasil penelitianmenunjukkan bahwa dalam menyampaikan materi pidato, gaya bicara SBY teratur, kaku, dan menggunakanistilah yang panjang. SBY lebih mengutamakan kode verbal dibandingkan dengan non verbal karena mampu membentuk bahasa (langue) yaitu fonologi (tata bunyi), morfologi (pembentukan kata), dan sintaksis (pembentuk kalimat). Gerakan bahasa isyarat adaptor SBY yang paling banyak ditemui terutama objek adapteryang ditujukan pada gadget canggih yang dibawanya untuk membantunya mengingat isi materipidato. Sedangkan gaya retorika Jokowi menggunakan bahasa percakapan (parole), yaitu menggunakanbahasa keseharian dan mudah dipahami oleh semua kalangan, kata-kata yang merakyat, dan lebih to thepoint. Bahasa tubuh (body language) Jokowi juga membantu memudahkan pesan pidato dapat tersampaikandengan jelas. The results showed that in delivering speech material, SBY’s speech style is regular, rigid, and uses long term. SBY prefers verbal code compared with non verbal because it is able to form language (langue) that is phonology(sound system), morphology (word formation), and syntax (forming of sentence). The most widely used SBYadapter language gesture is particularly the object-adapter aimed at the advanced gadgets it carries tohelp him remember the content of the speech material. The results of this study concluded that many contemporaries of Raja Ali Haji often made the best works, such as Gurindam Dua Belas, Tuhfat Al-Nahfis and the Book of Malay Language Knowledge which led the Malay language to be an introduction to Indonesian. Abstrack. Style of language can be interpreted as an individual way of expressing ideas or characteristics of how individuals communicate. A politician has his own style, even the head of state, community leaders and even writers. The essence is that nothing is really the same in someone's style, both when speaking and writing. In stylistic studies it is often referred to as a linguistic approach to literature, because literature is inseparable from the medium of language. This paper will discuss the style of language in the lyrics of the song Berkelana ke Ujung Dunia by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Song lyrics are considered to be the same as poetry, so the study of song lyrics is right using stylistic studies with the method of content analysis. This paper illustrates my own teaching experience perceiving Kartini, my ‘Central Java’ student, who has different background of culture in the class. How I noticed her is part of impact on how my English teachers used to notice me. This is due to a belief that the capability of teachers to ‘overlook the significance of their past experience’ is one of the elements in shaping their present and future attitude in teaching and learning (Jalongo and Isenberg, 1995). Therefore, a narrative analysis which investigates nonnarative data through narration (Bamberg, 2012; Benson, 2014) is presented to illustrate the concept of the major hindrance in communication in the way of overgeneralizing, stereotyping, and reducing the students with something different or less than they are under the four constituents; stereotype, prejudice, culturalism, and essentialism (Holliday, 2010). The data inform that I once viewed my student in terms of difference from myself. Thus, I was misled by my own preconceptions and have fallen into the trap of Othering.

This study comparatively analyses the allusion and analogies of Indonesian Presidents’ by wayang characters and stories. It particularly interrogates how wayang characters and lakon allude and mediate the personal and political identities of Indonesian presidents in the Reformasi era. The study focuses on the portrayal of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Jokowi during Reformasi era. The study is a qualitative research and deploying Textual and Critical Discourse Analysis approaches. These are to examine how language in the selected wayang kulit and wayang golek stories, as a form of social and cultural practice, constructs the personal and political identities of the presidents. Central to the analysis, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is in most cases alluded as Semar, and his association with selected lakon significantly inform on the political and personal identities among Indonesians and the International community. On the other hand, Jokowi is alluded to as Petruk but presenting contradicting allusions and analogies in Indonesian politics. Generally, findings suggest that the portrayal of Indonesian presidents’ identities by wayang characters and in the lakon is never fixed. The change of political atmosphere and failure to meet peoples’ expectations culminate in changes on the portrayal of political and personal identities of presidents.

This study aimed to investigate the legal rights of refugee children in Bambasi Refugee Camp, Ethiopia. Qualitative method via case study were used. There were 11 participants interviewed from the selected officials wring from teachers, Bambasi Authority for Refugee and Returnees Affairs (ARRA) and Benishangul Gumz Regional State (BGRS) Education Bureau. Some refugees children who aged from 12 to 17 years old with their parents authorization were included in the interviews too. They were chosen based on their academic performance, age and grade level. The whole process were reinforced with field observations and journalling. Within the periphery of this articulation, results showed that the refugee camp school lack classrooms, library room was not functional and no laboratory rooms as well. The school curriculum need to be revisited as there was no special education in curricular offerings. Lack of qualified teachers was another issue, language barrier and financial scarcity were among the identified challenges faced by refugee children. Their rights to education need to be protected. This implied for the government to look seriously into the situation of the refugee camp school so refugee children’s right to education will be protected and to reinforce quality education in the camp.

Cleaning is often the survival employment that migrants can get in their new home country. Ideally, the workplace can be a site for integration and language learning. This article explores how two migrants working as cleaners in Finland narrate their work-related Finnish language learning trajectories. The research is designed by applying nexus analysis (Scollon & Scollon, 2004), which focuses on social action in the intersection of interaction order, participants’ life experiences, and discourses in place. The social action in focus here is investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015), which means a commitment to developing language skills to achieve one’s aspirations. The article also analyses how language learners position themselves and are positioned by others, because positioning affects access to meaningful learning opportunities. Positioning analysis by Bamberg and Georgakopoulou (2008) in a small stories approach is applied to analyse the key participants’ oral narratives told in the context of ethnographic research interviews. Follow-up interviews conducted a year later are analysed to show how positioning changes over time. The study illustrates that investment in work-related language learning is meaningful when occupational development and language learning can be purposefully combined. However, migrants are positioned as a potential workforce in low-level jobs and their expertise is often ignored, which means that investments in language learning might not pay off in career development. Supporting educated migrants in finding appropriate employment would facilitate goal-oriented language learning.

Abstract:
Purpose: This research has several objectives. First, determine lexical density and compare the lexical density. Second, to determine the key lexical density and compare the key lexical density. Third, to test the independence of the relationship between lexical variations and the text of President Joko Widodo's and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speeches. Theoretical Reference: The theoretical basis used in this research is the lexical analysis approach in linguistics. The application of lexical perspective analysis is expected to be able to review the communication used by each individual. The theoretical lexical discussion will also use a statistical independence analysis approach. The application of a statistical independence analysis approach is used to review a person's individual language abilities. Method: This research uses a qualitative and quantitative corpus linguistics approach. The corpus linguistic application used in this research is the KORTARA application (Korpus Nusantara). The research data is a corpus of 9 texts of President Joko Widodo's speeches and a corpus of 9 texts of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono which are official speeches every 16 August before the DPR of the Republic of Indonesia. Results and Conclusion: The results of this research reveal that the text corpus of President Joko Widodo's speech is richer and more varied than the text corpus of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech in lexical use. This research also revealed that there is a relationship between lexical variation and the type of text of the President of the Republic of Indonesia's speech with a confidence level of 95%. The difference in lexical variation and frequency between the text corpus of President Joko Widodo's speech and the text corpus of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's speech is statistically significant at p < 0.05. Implication of Research: The implication of this research is the realization of the KORTARA corpus linguistic approach (Korpus Nusantara) which can facilitate research for small and large scale data. This research also reveals that the application of a statistical approach provides maximum results in the analysis of large-scale linguistic phenomena. Originality/value: The current study makes a valuable empirical contribution by combining statistical analysis using corpus and qualititative analysis to give comprehensive conclusion. This study is the answer toward the question about the reliability and validity of linguistic studies.

Abstract:
Speech acts are utterances which do not only have explicit meaning but also implicit meaning. Political speech acts are such an important issue for politicians as they can provide information to regulate people's thoughts and opinions through political language which is used as the main key. This research examined speech acts’ implementation in political speech, including the types of speech acts by politicians in political speech as well as their functions, in order to give a theoretical analysis about every utterance in political speech through context of meaning. The data were analyzed qualitatively where the researchers describe the results in the form of words and explanations by adopting Searle’s theory. It was found that the types of speech acts that mostly appeared in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s political speech are nine assertives, eight commissives and four directives. Children's narratives consist of event clauses and contextualizing or ‘evaluative’ clauses. Bamberg & Damrad-Frye (1991) and Bamberg (1994) claimed that young children make limited use of evaluative clauses because they are less able to adopt a global perspective on the narrative. In an earlier study, Karmiloff-Smith (1985) demonstrated that the narratives of younger children have coherence only at a local level. However, Wellman & Bartsch (1988) showed that young children could produce evaluative-like causal explanations if given a specific prompt. The present study on 160 young children aged five, seven, nine and eleven years examined their production of evaluatives in narratives of a story presented as a video sequence with no spoken dialogue, to ensure that the children's production was not simply a re-working of verbal input. Results indicated that prompts greatly facilitated children's production of evaluatives and that they could adopt a global perspective on the story when formulating evaluatives.These results indicate that limitations in the narratives of young children are more plausibly explained by contextual factors influencing language production and by constraints on working memory than by children's presumed lack of understanding of the structure of events or their inferences about the minds of the characters.

Language plays a crucial role in political speech. The use of a particular language canreflect or be influenced by the speaker’s ideology, power, cultural/social background, region, or social status. This paper is concerned with the relationship between language and power, specifically as manifested in the language used by an Indonesian president in international forums. It aims to uncover the power relations that were projected through the linguistic features of the president’s speech texts, particularly the use of modal verbs. Data for this paper are the speeches on the topics of peace and climate change delivered by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in international forums during his first and second presidential terms. This paper’s analysis of linguistic modalities uses Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to answer its research questions. The results show that, in projecting his power, SBY used several linguistic modal verbs. From the context of the modality used it can be understood that the president conveyed his strategic desire to be himself as he tried to relate to the audience (as he assumed it to be) and construct an image of himself, of his audience, and of their relationship. The president produced discourse that embodied assumptions about the social relations between his leadership and the audience and asserted both his legitimate power as president and his expert power. Through the language used, SBY created, sustained, and replicated the fundamental inequalities and asymmetries in the forums he attended.

Abstract:
Language plays a significant part in shaping and influencing people’s perspectives on societies and on political sectors, especially in an inaugural speech. Inaugural speech is one of the powerful tools to notify the people of the purposes as a leader. Hence, the researchers aimed to analyze the inaugural speeches of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in 2004 and Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in 2019 regarding their rhetoric and schematic words in their speeches during their tenure served as the Indonesian President. To uncover their inaugural speeches, the researchers used the theoretical frameworks proposed by Hymes (1974, cited in Eaton, 2019), where he developed the analysis of the connection between a language and a broader feature, such as macro- and micro-linguistics analysis. However, the key purpose of concern still marks a language presenting equality between linguistic and social perspectives. The study revealed that SBY and Jokowi mostly used polite words, a low, moderate voice, and tended to appreciate their rivals when giving their inaugural speeches respectively in 2004 and 2019. The difference in macro and micro-linguistics features assert that these two national figures have different traits even though they are from the same ethnic group, the Javanese. Further, this study suggested some pedagogical implications for English teachers to implement the potential benefits of macro- and micro-linguistics analysis of inaugural speeches for the language classroom. It can bridge a gap between language teaching and practical English use in society.

Similar to the uses of default discourse markers such as ‘well’, ‘you know’ and ‘I mean’, instances of ‘it depends’ and ‘ça dépend’ can be attested in which the speaker’s intersubjective positioning seems to be the main motivation behind their use (Moissinac and Bamberg 2004). In this paper we explore the systematicity and frequency of such examples in both French and English based on extensive contextualised corpus-based analysis. In particular, we will focus on their functional and formal features and attest to what extent they can be diagnosed as representative of ongoing intersubjectification processes. In doing so, we will trace differences and similarities between the two languages. The study shows that there is indeed fertile ground for such expressions to develop in the direction of discourse markers and that they evolve at slightly different paces in both languages.

The study aims to uncover and explore the social identities of women suffering from a genetic disorder called Turner syndrome (TS), and whose main symptoms are a short stature and gonadal dysgenesis. Such a genetically-determined physical appearance is argued to influence the positioning of TS women in the web of social relationships and identities. This linguistic analysis of narratives delivered by Polish women with TS in semi-structured interviews aims to explicate the extent to which they are actors or recipients in creating their own identities. The analysis draws on the assumptions of the ‘small story’ paradigm developed by Michael Bamberg (1997, 2005) who claims that in interaction, narrative is not only used to convey meaning, but also to construct the identities of the interlocutors. Thus, narrative is treated in a functional way, in which its formal structure and content are integrally associated with its use and any deviations are relativized as a consequence of a user’s deliberate activity.

Common folks “have” emotions and talk to others; and sometimes they make “their” emotions the topic of such talk. The emotions seem to be “theirs,” since they can be conceived of as private states (or events); and they can be topicalized, because we seem to be able to attribute or lend a conventionalized public form (such as a linguistic label or name) to some inner (and therefore nonpublic) state or event. This is the way much of our folk-talk and folk-thinking about emotions, the expression thereof, the role of language in these expressions, and communication in general are organized. However, as we have shown (Bamberg & Lindenberger 1984), such talk serves the purpose of communicating effectively and reaching mutual understanding.
