The research carried out aims to analyze how the hegemonic categories of generation and gender influence, in the reproduction of the different forms of intra and extra group violence between groups of young people of Dominican origin, related to the so-called "Latin bands" (such as the Dominican Dont'Tg—DDP— and Trinitarians). The work has focused on a little-studied aspect: the participation of young women in these groups and the gender roles that occur and/or reproduce in the interaction between young people in their social and family environment. It has been necessary to expand the area of work of ethnographic field to cover the analysis of the functioning of these groups in neighborhoods of Madrid, N.Y. and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), to establish the relationship of the two groups in the three contexts.

Full textCriminal behavior creates a great social alarm among the population and the different institutions, and especially when such behavior is performed by minors. Therefore, the overall objective of this study is to analyze the antisocial and criminal behavior by adolescents conducted in a sample of Italian students aged between 12 and 18 years. Also, the risk factors that might be associated with different behaviors reported by youth are analyzed. As discussed above, the methodology used in this research is the self report, as it is the technique to meet a broader and detailed youth crime. It also allows to know the dark figure of crime and socio-demographic characteristics of individuals. The study sample consists of 490 subjects attending secondary schools in first and second grade, living in Italy. The choice of the two geographical contexts location (one more rural, Sardinia and other more urban, Emilia Romagna) of the institutes and schools selected was not accidental, but of convenience, as they had done in earlier studies on crime youth, a fact that our sample is biased and not representative of the whole Italy. Results can say that most of the young evaluated in this study have been conducted SLIGHT antisocial behavior such as drinking and download music illegally, while serious criminal behavior committed most frequently are involved in fights, steal in a shopping center, possessing a weapon and vandalize. Also, in this research we have highlighted a number of risk factors linked to criminal behaviors of the boys, and in particular the following: being male, acting impulsively, belonging to criminal groups, live in problematic neighborhoods, and have witnessed fights-parental conflict. Another finding evidenced in this study is that the territory of rural-urban-zones or membership is not a decisive variable (with some minor exceptions) to explain the commission of criminal behavior by adolescents.

The main goal of the present PhD dissertation is to identify, analyze and describe in detail the teenage musicians and the musical conductors’ socioemotional profile, who are members of a youth band from the Valencian Community or belong to a youth choir from Catalonia. To this end, we have developed an exhaustive theoretical framework structured around three main axes: emotional education through competences; adolescence and music; and youth musical groups. The theoretical framework has functioned as a fundamental basis for the design and implementation of our empirical study. It has been, framed within a non-experimental or ex post facto methodology, using both descriptive and comparative-causal analysis techniques. The study consists of applying different psychometric instruments to a large sample of adolescents, who are members of a youth musical group (n = 660), in particular 10 bands from the Valencian Community and 10 Catalan choirs, and their respective musical conductors. With the use of those instruments, we try not only to describe the variables of the adolescents musicians, related to socioemotional elements, but also to establish relations of causality between these and those obtained by a group of non-musicians (n = 655). The results confirm that the participation in this type of groups has a remarkable personal and social impact. Teenage musicians have a significantly higher socioemotional development than non-musicians. Similarities and differences have also been established between the components of the bands and the corals. Finally, a detailed analysis of the socioemotional profile of the conductors, who lead the groups has also been conducted.

Full textThe doctoral thesis explores the phenomenon of those known as "Latin bands" in the city of Barcelona, in the period 2005-2015, based on two basic elements. First of all, we focus on the young person participating in these groups, or susceptible to participation, and on the impact that they have in their socio-educational process of belonging or relating to these groups, as well as the factors that they influence the loyalty or abandonment of them. Secondly, the study explores the different visions of this phenomenon that have the professionals who work with these guys from different professional fields. Once the previous elements have been explored, conclusions are formulated, and based on these; tools and socio-educational intervention strategies are attached to these groups. In order to reach these conclusions, as a result of the observation of these two elements, the work is structured in three parts: a first part in which we find an approach to the history, the typology and the functioning of these groups and to the characteristics of its members, in order to identify those aspects that favor the belonging and the abandonment of the group; a second part in which we find an exploration of the characteristics of the young participants or in situation of being and an exploration of the different images of the Latin groups, understanding by image the different visions of the phenomenon that exists from the agents that are working, in one way or another, with these groups; and a third part that corresponds to the conclusions reached on the basis of the information obtained throughout the work and which should allow us to obtain tools for the intervention with these young people.

Full textSince the attempts of the World Trade Center, it does not happen one day that the media tell the exploits of the various organized strips existing in the World. Suffering from an absence of wide definition because of their variety, the notion of gangs arouses a serious study. Indeed, resting on a selective, constant and definitive membership, summarized by the formula "blood in, blood out", the disregard of rules workbenches by the strip is punished by the death. Exercising its domination in the street, the gang does not hesitate to use the violence and exercises their criminal activities while arming itself to be respected. This phenomenon, so dangerous and very present at the beginning in North America, tends to extend very quickly in the other countries to affect then a world character. To fight against these strips, the most affected States were brought to react by setting up new methods of fight and by getting organized at the multilateral level. Dividing into two parts, this thesis shows, in a first part, how the presence of gangs became a social problem and in a second part, state reactions in the fight against the organized strips

Full textAbuse in drugs consumption constitutes a social and public health problem in most countries, due to the multiple negative consequences they provoke for people\'s emotional and physical development. Acknowledged risk groups for drugs consumption are marginal groups, which include adolescents and young people from youth gangs. This study aimed to: analyze the effect of personal (age, gender, mental health problems, low education level, having a paid job, years of education) and interpersonal risk factors (relation with friends with badly adapted conducts and inappropriate relation with parents) on the consumption of legal (alcohol and tobacco) and illegal drugs (marihuana, cocaine and inhalants) and, next, to develop a theoretical model that represents the meanings of drugs consumption in marginal adolescents and young people from youth gangs. Thus, a study was carried out with a quantitative-qualitative methodology. For the first objective, 175 subjects were considered. The sample was estimated for a multiple linear regression with seven variables, with a .90 power and a .05 significance level, for an estimated variance of 20%. For the second objective, the methodological framework of Grounded Theory was used in the light of Symbolic Interactionism, using a sixteen-subject sample. The results of the logistic regression models showed that personal factors exert a significant effect on alcohol consumption (x2=30.19; p<.05), marihuana (x2=47.78; p<.001), cocaine (x2= 55.54; p<.001) and inhalants (x2=41.79; p<.001). The personal risk factors that demonstrated a larger contribution in the models were: gender (being a man), age, mental health problems and low education level; and the interpersonal factors relations with friends with badly adapted conducts and inappropriate relation with parents revealed a positive effect on the consumption of alcohol (x2 =20.65 p<.05), marihuana (x2=22.56; p<.001), cocaine (x2=18.5 p<.05) and inhalants (x2=14.80; p<.001). The personal and interpersonal risk factors did not show significant effects for tobacco consumption. After transcribing the interviews of the 16 subjects, they were coded in three steps: open, axial and selective coding. Comparative data analysis resulted in the central category THE GLORY OF PLEASURE OVER THE CONSEQUENCES with respect to the meaning of drugs consumption, which represents the advantages of the pleasant emotional effects of well-being, relaxation, disinhibition, and, consequently, provoked laughing, indicating feelings of happiness about the possible consequences of drugs consumption. These results allowed for the reflection that, in the near future, there is a need to elaborate adequate prevention programs in this group of marginal young people.

Full textThis research analyzes the role of transmedia graphics behind the material album of the band BTS and its impact on the behavior of the Latin American youth consumer. All this based on the hypothesis that the fanatic consumers of the material album of BTS in Latin America acquires this product influenced by the transmedia graphics, the conceptualization behind the design of the album itself and various external factors. To address this research, which involves a human group and also objects, a qualitative research is being carried out, which includes visual, bibliographic and field analysis work, based on the different research variables. As main results, four graphic stages reflected in the album covers of the BTS Love Yourself series were identified, conveying the process of growth in youth through self-love. This process, expressed through a volatile line, creates the connecting thread between the conceptual and visual meaning of the entire project. It is concluded that the transmedia graphics behind the BTS material album does influence consumer behavior, but this is also affected by various cultural and social factors such as the Hallyu phenomenon, the influence of the collective behavior of fandoms, the acquisitive power of the target audience and the emotional connection fans have with their idols.

Vicente, Patrícia Nunes 1980. "Variability in growth and condition of juvenile common two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris)." Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/17887.
Full textThe objective of this study was to assess the variability in condition for juvenile common two-banded sea bream Diplodus vulgaris in nursery areas of the main Portuguese estuaries using several individual condition indices. Estuaries and coastal lagoons play an important role for juveniles of marine fish because they offer areas with high availability of food, high water temperature and lower predation. These characteristics permit a fast and safe growth of fish until they reach adequate size to return to the ocean and to join adult populations. In this study, two indices estimated by analysis of otolith microstructure were used: widths of the 10 last and of the 60 first daily increments were considered as recent growth index and initial growth index, respectively. Furthermore, two common condition indices were also used: biochemical RNA:DNA ratio, that assesses nutritional status of individuals, and morphometric Fulton's K, that gives an estimate of general well-being of individuals. Since recent growth index and RNA:DNA ratio were significantly related with total length of individuals, a correction was performed and corrected condition indices recent growth’ index and RNA:DNA’ ratio were considered. Fulton's K was also significantly related with total length of juveniles and for this reason was replaced by condition factor K', which considers allometry in the growth of fish. Condition factor K' was considered in the study. A significant positive correlation between recent growth’ and initial growth indices was obtained. Results of the multiple regression analyses seem to reflect the discrepancy in the response times of the different condition indices used. In general, Sado, Ria Formosa and Guadiana provided juveniles in better individual condition. Future studies should be done to better investigate relationships between condition indices and between condition indices and environmental variables, focusing on the link between individual condition and habitat quality of nursery areas.
