Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
PALABRAS CLAVE: bandas, nación, síntomas, estigma, resistencia ABSTRACT The article explores the world of so-called youth gangs from suburban neighbourhoods, children of marginalisation, and reflects upon this phenomenon in the contemporary context. These groups are primarily composed of children of the metropolitan sub-proletariat, primarily characterised by their immigrant status and defined by global as well as local elements. The dominant image of these groups constructed by society is discussed as being stigmatising, even more so during the recent financial crisis. At the same time, these groups provide a sense of belonging and an identity to which individual members can refer. Furthermore, despite their ambiguity and contradictions, gangs can also be seen as groups of resistance against the structural violence that they endure. The interpretative framework of the article is based on various ethnographic research studies that the author conducted over the last ten years on marginalized youth groups, bandas latinas [Latino gangs ] in Catalonia in particular.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Swarming and the expression of phase polyphenism are defining characteristics of locust species. Increases in local population density mediate morphological, physiological and behavioural changes within individuals, which correlate with mass marching of juveniles in migratory bands and flying swarms of adults. The Australian plague locust ( Chortoicetes terminifera ) regularly forms migratory bands and swarms, but is claimed not to express phase polyphenism and has accordingly been used to argue against a central role for phase change in locust swarming. We demonstrate that juvenile C. terminifera express extreme density-dependent behavioural phase polyphenism. Isolated-reared juveniles are sedentary and repelled by conspecifics, whereas crowd-reared individuals are highly active and are attracted to conspecifics. In contrast to other major locust species, however, behavioural phase change does not accumulate across generations, but shifts completely within an individual's lifetime in response to a change in population density.

Abstract:
AbstractThe extent to which band structure influences the distribution of breeding activity is unknown for the slender-tailed meerkat Suricata suricatta, a cooperatively breeding mongoose. Here we present the residence histories of three focal bands monitored over ten band-years in the southwestern Kalahari, with less detailed data derived from non-focal bands for a further 20 band-years. Mean total band size early in the breeding season was 10, and mean size excluding juveniles was 6.7. Despite a tendency towards females among juveniles, and males among yearlings and adults, sex ratios within each age class did not significantly deviate from unity, but at the population level there were significantly more adult males than reproductive females. A large proportion (71.6%) of adult females bred, and failures of reproductive suppression occurred in 40% of band years. This incidence was high in all years and was not obviously related to environmental conditions. Bands with more than one reproductive female contained significantly more adults and adult females than bands with only a single reproductive female. There was a strong correlation between numbers of reproductive females and numbers of adult females in a band. Most (68%) subordinate females which bred were aged three years or more. Reproductive competition was strong and there was a negative correlation between numbers of adult females, breeding females or adult males and per capita juvenile production. Meerkat bands are unusual among cooperative breeders because many individuals were non-kin and the relative constancy in band size within and between years masked a high turnover of membership: all animals of known origin aged three years or older, were immigrants, although philopatry was commoner among younger animals. Our data show that meerkats employ a range of reproductive strategies: bands exhibiting a spectrum of reproductive suppression coexist, and individuals respond to the opportunities afforded by their social environments.

Abstract:
The ophiuroid Ophiarachnella gorgonia Müller and Troschel, 1842 has the Type II mode of ophiuroid development through a short-lived (lecithotrophic) vitellaria larva that settles 3 days after fertilization. Development in O. gor gonia is characterized by a reduction in larval structures and settlement of a precocious juvenile. In comparison with other ophiuroid vitellariae, the larva of O. gorgonia has reduced ciliated bands that lack prominent epithelial ridges. Ab breviated development in O. gorgonia is achieved through prompt formation of a radial hydrocoel and radial juvenile skeleton. Newly settled juvenile O. gorgonia also lack the feeding and locomotory structures found in the settlement stage of species with ophioplutei. Juveniles of O. gorgonia settle with one pair of buccal podia, and the mouth is not functional. The first arm segment forms before the mouth opens. In comparison, in species with ophioplutei the first two pairs of buccal podia and the first two arm segments develop before the mouth opens and before settlement occurs. Comparison of development of O. gorgonia and that of other species with vitellariae suggests that hetero chron ies and deletions in the metamorphic and settlement programs may be involved in the evolution of abbreviated development.

Abstract:
The development and growth of a feather star Decametra tigrina from Notojima Island, Japan, is reported. This is the first record describing the complete development, from early embryos to juveniles, in the family Colobometridae. Their larval development was observed to progress independently from the adults, and was similar to other feather star species. Embryos hatched as uniformly ciliated gastrulae, which turned into doliolaria larvae when four narrow circumferential ciliated bands were formed. Skeletal ossicles began to form inside the doliolaria larvae, which subsequently settled to the substrate, proceeding to the cystidean stage. The protrusion of the arms from the oral opening marked the beginning of the pentacrinoid stage. About 45 days after hatching, they autotomized their stalks and became juvenile comatulids with arms about 6 mm long. These early juveniles apparently differ from the adults in morphological characters, such as having no pairs of tubercles or spines on the dorsal of their cirrals, and no proximal pinnules except for the first pinnule (P1). Both features are prominent in adults and are used for the classification of D. tigrina. Morphological differences between juveniles and the adults may also occur in other feather star species. A revision of the classification of comatulids, which considers morphological changes with growth, is required.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Many marine demosponges contain large amounts of phylogenetically complex yet highly sponge-specific microbial consortia within the mesohyl matrix, but little is known about how these microorganisms are acquired by their hosts. Settlement experiments were performed with the viviparous Caribbean demosponge Ircinia felix to investigate the role of larvae in the vertical transmission of the sponge-associated microbial community. Inspections by electron microscopy revealed large amounts of morphologically diverse microorganisms in the center of I. felix larvae, while the outer rim appeared to be devoid of microorganisms. In juveniles, microorganisms were found between densely packed sponge cells. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was performed to compare the bacterial community profiles of adults, larvae, and juvenile sponges. Adults and larvae were highly similar in DGGE band numbers and banding patterns. Larvae released by the same adult individual contained highly similar DGGE banding patterns, whereas larvae released by different adult individuals showed slightly different DGGE banding patterns. Over 200 bands were excised, sequenced, and phylogenetically analyzed. The bacterial diversity of adult I. felix and its larvae was comparably high, while juveniles showed reduced diversity. In total, 13 vertically transmitted sequence clusters, hereafter termed “IF clusters,” that contained sequences from both the adult sponge and offspring (larvae and/or juveniles) were found. The IF clusters belonged to at least four different eubacterial phyla and one possibly novel eubacterial lineage. In summary, it could be shown that in I. felix, vertical transmission of microorganisms through the larvae is an important mechanism for the establishment of the sponge-microbe association.

Abstract:
During the 2000s, the term “indie” became common and relatively principal for the juvenile, urban music of the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires. How can we understand the indie phenomenon in the history of juvenile music related to Argentine rock bands? What variables should we take into consideration to comprehend indie since its logic differs from the one established by the identitarian appropriation of music genres? In order to answer these questions, we describe indie music in Buenos Aires and show its evolution. We suggest that indie is much more than a way in which people identify themselves with music. It is the manifestation of a new relation with music and its means of production. In line with this idea, we explore the most recent pragmatic approach to “music into action” and music as mediator of the social to reformulate the notion of music to use.

Abstract:
An unusual population of cyst nematode was found in soils collected from a Powell Butte, OR field with a cropping history including potato, wheat, other crops, and significant weed presence. These nematodes could not be placed with certainty into any known species and exhibited some unique morphological features in some specimens. Compared with Globodera pallida, the cyst body length was slightly longer and the second-stage juvenile stylet length was slightly shorter. In some individuals, the J2 stylet knob height was greater and the tail annules were more prominent than in G. pallida, and the tail abruptly narrowed, with a slight constriction near the posterior third of the hyaline terminus. Compared with G. rostochiensis, the hyaline tail terminus had a larger number of refractive bodies, and cysts of this population had a smaller Granek's ratio and fewer cuticular ridges between the anus and vulva. In some individuals, the tail termini of second-stage juveniles were more bluntly pointed, and the stylet knobs were more anteriorly directed with greater height. Unlike G. tabacum, the cyst wall often lacked a network-like pattern and, in some individuals, the juvenile tail terminus distinctly narrowed after a constriction. Molecularly, the population was distinct from G. pallida, G. rostochiensis, and G. tabacum. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA region gave results similar to G. tabacum; however, ITS restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns were observed to have individual bands in common with G. rostochiensis and G. pallida. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS1 and -2 rDNA sequences showed greatest similarity to populations from Argentina and Chile; together, they form a moderately supported clade, distinct from G. rostochiensis, G. tabacum, G. “mexicana,” European type G. pallida, and several G. pallida populations from South America.

Abstract:
The Australian Fairy Tern Sternula nereis nereis is a seabird that breeds along the coast and whose small populations are dispersed over vast stretches of the Australian seaboard and nearshore islands. In recent years, citizen science programs have been developed to bolster monitoring efforts to better understand breeding success and identify site threat profiles. The development of protocols that facilitate the collection of consistent measurements is important for long-term monitoring of this threatened (Vulnerable) species. This study describes plumage development and age-related behaviour in juvenile Australian Fairy Terns using direct observations and photographic recapture of individually marked birds. This information may be used as the basis for the development of a field ageing guide, enabling the collection of standardised information on colony demographics and juvenile development. A temporary colour-banding study was trialled by painting nail varnish onto 15 Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme (ABBBS) incoloy bands, avoiding the need to band nestlings with additional readable or PVC colour-bands. The varnish remained intact, albeit chipped, on four surviving birds that were resighted ≤80 days after banding, enabling the identification of individuals away from the colony site, without the need for recapture. The temporary marking of ABBBS bands using nail varnish offered an effective short-term solution for identifying individual juvenile Fairy Terns in the field and for describing plumage changes over a period of c. 3 months.

A new species of Pergalumna from soil and litter was reared in laboratory and a description of adult and juveniles is provided. Adults are characterized by having bands of striae in the posterior part of notogaster, the interlamellar seta are longer than all other prodorsal setae and the lenticular area covers most of the prodorsum. It differs from Pergalumna boliviana by having long interlamellar seta, bigger ellipsoidal porose area Aa and the presence of A2; it differs from Pergalumna paraboliviana by the shape of porose areas; i.e. Aa being ellipsoidal and big, A1 is the smallest, Ap is absent and there are longitudinal striate bands on the prodorsum and ventral plate.

Abstract:
Abstract In order for mark–recapture models to provide unbiased estimates of population parameters, it is critical that uniquely identifying tags or marks are not lost. We double-banded male and female wild turkeys with aluminum rivet bands and estimated the probability that a bird would be recovered with both bands <1–225 wk since banding (mean = 51.2 wk, SD = 44.0). We found that 100% of females (n = 37) were recovered with both bands. For males, we recovered 6 of 188 turkeys missing a rivet band for a retention probability of 0.984 (95% CI = 0.96–0.99). If male turkeys are double-banded with rivet bands the probability of recovering a turkey without any marks is <0.001. We failed to detect a change in band retention over time or differences between adults and juveniles. Given the low cost and high retention rates of rivet aluminum bands, we believe they are an effective marking technique for wild turkeys and, for most studies, will minimize any concern about the assumption that marks are not lost.

Abstract:
The pattern of growth increment zones, the cambial growth dynamics and the structural variation in wood formation of Swietenia macrophylla King, Carapa guianensis Aubl., and Cedrela odorata L. (Meliaceae) were investigated in order to understand the relationship of site conditions and sustainable growth in Central Amazonian plantations. Trees were available from 8-, 17-, 23-, and 57-year-old plantations, and from primary forests in Manaus (Amazônia), Santarem (Pará), and Aripuanã (Mato Grosso). The wood anatomical structure and the annual increments of 61 Swietenia, 94 Carapa, and 89 Cedrela trees were studied for different tree heights. The curves of annual increments were cross-dated and tested for synchronisation. The cambial growth dynamics of up to 52 trees per species were dated by means of dendrometer measurements, monthly labelling by pinmarkers, and extracted cambium samples investigated using a microscope. The intraannual course of the growth and structural variation was compared with the water supply of the soil and insect attacks (Hypsipyla grandella (Zeller) Lep.).In Swietenia and Carapa parenchyma and vessel bands as well as bands of resin canals were observed. Within the xylem of Cedrela, alternating bands of fibres and vessels surrounded by paratracheal parenchyma were found; bands of resin canals were only occasional. In the juvenile wood of Swietenia and Carapa no synchronization of the increment curves was possible, whereas the increment curves obtained in the juvenile wood of Cedrela showed parallel run in growth. The increment curves obtained in adult wood of Swietenia and Cedrela indicate an annual formation of increment zones, whereas the number of increment zones in the xylem of Carapa was approximately 50% higher than the tree age (years) indicating that the growth increments of Carapa also were not annual during the adult phase of growth. The study of the intraannual growth dynamics of the trees showed that the formation of parenchyma bands in Swietenia is induced by dry periods before a cambial dormancy. The formation of parenchyma bands of Carapa was induced by extremely dry and extremely wet periods before a cambial dormancy, whereas fibre bands in Cedrela were induced by dry periods before a cambial dormancy and the formation of vessel bands embedded in paratracheal parenchyma was induced by wet periods after a cambial dormancy. In addition, insect attack (Hypsipyla grandella) induced locally restricted formation of parenchyma bands and bands of resin canals in Swietenia, Carapa and Cedrela.

Abstract:
Dispersal of Larus novaehollandiae Stephens, from 10 colonies in South Australia, was studied during 1968-8 1 by means of bands designed for identification of free-living, uncaptured individuals. Dispersal patterns were characteristic of each colony, even for three colonies which were, at most, 10 km apart. Almost all dispersal records came from the area between Adelaide and Melbourne, and within 30 km of the coast. After breeding, the majority of gulls disperse eastwards; however, dispersal from each colony was correlated with a shift of gull population into areas where food was available from human sources such as rubbish dumps. From colonies 80 km south-east of Adelaide, a major human population, the predominant winter dispersal of these gulls was north-west, into the city and suburbs. The maximum direct-line dispersal distances recorded for 95% of the 3133 resighted gulls were <458 km. The greatest direct-line distance recorded was 1430 km. Overall, there was no significant difference in the mean dispersal distances of juveniles and adults, although at distances >480 km significantly more juveniles (<2y) were seen than adults (>2y). This involved only 2.5% of the total number of birds resighted. It is suggested that older, dominant birds maintain high status at preferred feeding places, and juveniles are possibly more erratic in their movements, as they search for food. This would account for the difference in the dispersal ofjuveniles and adults from a particular colony, and also for the significantly higher proportion of juveniles found at extreme distances from their natal colonies.

Abstract:
AbstractTo estimate annual apparent local survival, we collected capture–resighting data on 256 individually marked male Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) wintering at Estero de Punta Banda, Mexico, between 1994–1997. A hierarchical modeling approach was used to address the effect of age class and year on survivorship rates. The best-fit model included a constant apparent survival probability (ϕ = 0.489; 95% CI = 0.410–0.569), but several models fit nearly as well, and averaging among the top five, to account for model uncertainty, suggested that adults had somewhat higher values than juveniles (ϕ = 0.490 ± 0.051 vs. 0.450 ± 0.067). Detection probability was substantially higher for adults than for juveniles (p = 0.741 vs. p = 0.537). Those apparent survival estimates are low compared with those from other studies of Western Sandpipers at breeding and other nonbreeding locations, and substantially lower than the true survivorship rates expected for small sandpipers in general. We interpret these results as indicating that this site is of below average quality for nonbreeding male Western Sandpipers.

Abstract:
In this article we present a descriptive study of the soundtrack of children’s television programmes on the Andalusian public television network. This study is part of an international research project based on Latin America which seeks to address the need to understand the sonic context in which children live and study the way in which this shapes their sonic imagination. The use of music on television may be a response to commercial needs and, therefore, it is necessary to understand its influence in an educational context. Through analysis of the permanent sections, advertising and the cartoons included in the TV programme called «The Band» which is broadcast on the Andalusian public television network we can observe the televisual and sonic environment of Andalusian children. We use a descriptive methodology which, through the creation of a listening worksheet, highlights the most significant elements in the sample. After the analysis, we concluded that the predominant musical elements in the programme analyzed were from techno-pop and cinema soundtracks and this produced certain homogeneity in musical terms which in turn led to an impoverishment of listening habits which made it difficult to understand more complex musical elements. Therefore, we stress the need for schools to accept their responsibility in the task of educating children in critical listening skills.

Abstract:
Epilepsy is a disease marked by hypersynchronous bursts of neuronal activity; therefore, identifying the network characteristics of the epileptic brain is important. Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) represents a common, idiopathic generalized epileptic syndrome, characterized by spike-and-wave discharge (SWD) electroencephalographic (EEG) waveforms. We compare herein the network properties of periods of SWD and baseline activity using graph theory. EEG data were obtained from 11 patients with JME. Functional cortical networks during SWD and baseline periods were estimated by calculating the coherence between all possible electrode pairs in the delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma bands. Graph theoretical measures, including nodal degree, characteristic path length, clustering coefficient, and small-world index were then used to evaluate the characteristics of epileptic networks in JME. We also assessed short- and long-range connections between SWD and baseline networks. Compared to baseline, increased coherence was observed during SWD in all frequency bands. The nodal degree of the SWD network, particularly in the frontal region, was significantly higher compared to the baseline network. The clustering coefficient and small-world index were significantly lower in the theta and beta bands of the SWD versus baseline network, but the characteristic path length did not differ among networks. Long-range connections were increased during SWD, particularly between frontal and posterior brain regions. Our study suggests that SWD in JME is associated with increased local (particularly in frontal region) connectivity. Furthermore, the SWD network was associated with increased long-range connections, and reduced small-worldness, which may impair information processing during SWD.

AbstractCanonical discriminant analysis of four morphometric characters of juveniles and restriction enzymes analysis of ribosomal DNA sequences were used to distinguish Heterodera arenaria, H. aucklandica, H. avenae, H. filipjevi, H. hordecalis, H. iri, H. latipons, H. litoralis, H. schachtii and an undescribed species from grasslands. The results of unweighted pair group cluster analysis showed that H. avenae populations formed three groups and H. filipjevi two groups at the 80% level of similarity. Intraspecific polymorphism was revealed by rDNA-RFLP studies and two types of ITS regions within H. avenae populations can be distinguished. The pattern of restriction bands obtained with BsuRI, PstI and TaqI clearly distinguished populations of H. filipjevi from other species of the H. avenae group. Further enzymes and their combinations distinguished the other species. There are no enzymes which differentiate European populations of H. avenae from H. arenaria. Morphometrics, restriction endonuclease cleavage maps of ITS regions and a dendrogram of putative phylogenetic relations of several cyst-forming nematode species are given. Characterization of surface coat (SC) proteins including carbohydrate-binding proteins and glycoproteins of the plant-parasitic nematode Meloidogyne javanica 2nd-stage juvenile (J2) is reported. Extraction of surface proteins with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and separation by denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE) results with bands at 6, 9, 14, 22, 26, 31, 46, 49, 58, 66, 80, 205 and 250 kDa. On Western blots, the neoglycoprotein, fucosylated-, mannosylated- and glucosylated-bovine serum albumin, reacted with the 14, 22, 26, 58 and 66 kDa bands. The lectins, Concanavalin A and wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA) labelled surface protein bands of 6, 9, 14, 31, 58 and 66 kDa; WGA also labelled the 22 and 26 kDa bands. Biotin reagents were used to specifically trace surface proteins on live J2. SDS–PAGE of biotinylated J2 extracts revealed only 2 specific biotin-protein bands at 46 and 49 kDa. The labile and transitory nature of Meloidogyne javanica SC was demonstrated by the dynamics of human red blood cells (HRBC) adherence to J2 of different ages. HRBC adherence was also used to demonstrate the SC recovery of detergent-treated J2, which was further exhibited in the SDS–PAGE profiles.

Abstract:
The distribution and growth in height of two black spruce populations were studied in two areas that had been strip cut, one in 1968–1969 in the Nicauba Experimental Forest and the other in 1954 around Lake Massie. By careful sampling of trees, advance growth could be differentiated from post-established regeneration; to a certain extent, spruce originating from seed could also be distinguished from trees that grew by layering. Stem analysis was used to compare the juvenile growth of advanced and post-established regenerated black spruce to that of trees in the residual strips. The stocking and the density are high for black spruce 18–20 years after logging, regardless of their origin (seed, layering, advance growth, or post-established regeneration): more than 80% and over 18 000 stems/ha, respectively. The yield for seedlings is not uniform from strip to strip; it is significant in some and negligible in others. Thirty-four years after strip-cutting the area around Lake Massie, the stocking of black spruce is also over 80% and the density is greater than 22 000 stems/ha, but these trees originated almost exclusively by layering. In the Nicauba Experimental Forest, seedlings established themselves very rapidly after strip-cutting. Overall, over a 20-year period, the juvenile rate of growth in height of the dominant advance growth (mainly layers) in the two areas is comparable to that of the dominant trees in the residual strips of Nicauba; it is almost double the rate observed in dominant post-established regenerated black spruce in the Nicauba area.

Abstract. We analyse deformation bands related to horizontal contraction with an intermittent period of horizontal extension in Miocene turbidites of the Whakataki Formation south of Castlepoint, Wairarapa, North Island, New Zealand. In the Whakataki Formation, three sets of cataclastic deformation bands are identified: (1) normal-sense compactional shear bands (CSBs), (2) reverse-sense CSBs, and (3) reverse-sense shear-enhanced compaction bands (SECBs). During extension, CSBs are associated with normal faults. When propagating through clay-rich interbeds, extensional bands are characterised by clay smear and grain size reduction. During contraction, sandstone-dominated sequences host SECBs, and rare CSBs, that are generally distributed in pervasive patterns. A quantitative spacing analysis shows that most outcrops are characterised by mixed spatial distributions of deformation bands, interpreted as a consequence of overprint due to progressive deformation or distinct multiple generations of deformation bands from different deformation phases. As many deformation bands are parallel to adjacent juvenile normal faults and reverse faults, bands are likely precursors to faults. With progressive deformation, the linkage of distributed deformation bands across sedimentary beds occurs to form through-going faults. During this process, bands associated with the wall-, tip-, and interaction-damage zones overprint earlier distributions resulting in complex spatial patterns. Regularly spaced bands are pervasively distributed when far away from faults. Microstructural analysis shows that all deformation bands form by inelastic pore collapse and grain crushing with an absolute reduction in porosity relative to the host rock between 5 % and 14 %. Hence, deformation bands likely act as fluid flow barriers. Faults and their associated damage zones exhibit a spacing of 9 m on the scale of 10 km and are more commonly observed in areas characterised by higher mudstone-to-sandstone ratios. As a result, extensive clay smear is common in these faults, enhancing the sealing capacity of faults. Therefore, the formation of deformation bands and faults leads to progressive flow compartmentalisation from the scale of 9 m down to about 10 cm – the typical spacing of distributed, regularly spaced deformation bands.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purposes of this paper are threefold. First, to draw attention to an overlooked feature of children’s institutions in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; namely, the widespread existence of boys’ brass bands. The second purpose is to explain why these were created and the third is to consider what implications membership of a band had for a boy’s subsequent life. Design/methodology/approach – The paper relies upon archival and secondary sources. Findings – The study traces the influences that led to the formation of so many boys’ bands. These included the background of brass bands in popular culture; the belief in the power of music as an agent of social reform; the money-spinning value of a band that gave public performances, and the opportunity for a band-boy to join a military band, thereby securing a foothold in the juvenile labour market. Over and above these findings is the fact that so many boys from deprived backgrounds could be taught to play a musical instrument to a competent standard. Originality/value – As far as the author knows this is the only study of children’s homes’ bands. Its value lies in emphasising the fact that some of the most disadvantaged children are likely to have latent aptitudes and talents that can be discovered and developed. That is the message for today.

Abstract:
Rig (Mustelus lenticulatus) specimens were aged by counting growth bands in whole vertebrae that were illuminated laterally with fibre-optic lights. Bands were counted by two readers who used information on the diameter of the vertebrae of new-born young and 1-year-old juveniles to identify the inner bands. The greatest estimated age was 12.1 years for a female of 137 cm total length, but few rig were more than 8 years old. For west coast South Island (WCSI) rig, there was no significant difference in growth rates of males and females. After pooling both sexes, there was no significant difference in growth rates between WCSI and east coast South Island (ECSI) rig. The combined WCSI and ECSI von Bertalanffy growth curve was Lt = 147.2 (1 – e −0.119[t + 2.35]). This curve agreed well with growth curves derived from length–frequency data, but validation of the ageing technique is still required. WCSI males mature at ~85 cm and 5–6 years, and females at ~100 cm and 7–8 years. ECSI rig probably mature at similar lengths and ages. Tagged rig have been recaptured after nearly 14 years at liberty. Longevity probably exceeds 15 years, and may exceed 20 years.

Abstract:
Reproductive behavior and development in Spilotes sulphureus (Serpentes: Colubridae) from Ecuador. The Birdsnake Spilotes sulphureus is a large-sized species that occurs from the Amazon region to the Atlantic forest of South America. Despite the wide distribution little is known about its natural history. Here we report, for the frst time, reproductive behavior displayed by this species observed in a pair of Ecuadorian specimens in captivity. A ritualized pre-copulatory behavior followed a colubrine pattern similar to the congeneric species Spilotes pullatus. The repertoire included chin-rubbing, continuous tongue ficking, head raising, body jerking, cloacal gaping, and partial mounting. Oviposition occurred 86–98 days after of the frst copulation. Females lay clutches of 7–14 eggs. Juvenile coloration is remarkably different from adults. Newborns have a dorsum with transverse brown or gray bands, and white or pale gray interspaces; young of 1–2 years have green bands and yellow-green interspaces; adults have dark green bands. Ontogenetic color changes are presumably associated with antipredator strategies, change in size, vulnerability or habitat and microhabitat selection.

Abstract:
A study was conducted on population organization and ranging pattern of rhesus macaque at Bandar Upazila, Narayanganj, Dhaka from December, 2009 to September, 2010. Direct count method was used to study the group size and composition, and ranging was determined by GPS coordination plotting on the map. A total of 66 monkeys (29 to 37 individuals) were found in two groups with a mean of 33±5.6. Among the population 7.6% adult male, 33.3% adult female, 9.1% sub-adult male, 7.6% sub-adult female, 25.8% juvenile and 16.7% was infant. The ratio between adult male and adult female was 1:4.4 and between adult and nonadults was 1:1.4. Day range length varied from 1543m to1716m (mean=1638.43±56.7). Home range was completely overlapped and varied negligibly from 45.2 ha. to 45.5 ha. (mean=45.32±0.2). They minimized conflictions by using different time to move. But the growing dependence of these urban macaques on human resources is a matter of concern. Therefore, conservation strategies should be directed to minimize this dependence.Jahangirnagar University J. Biol. Sci. 3(1): 27-35, 2014 (June)

Abstract:
Secretions were induced from second (invasive) stage juveniles (J2s) of the potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis by exposing them to 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyl tryptamine oxalate (DMT). Secretions were collected from J2s in sufficient quantity to allow direct analysis. Gel electrophoresis followed by monochromatic silver staining demonstrated the presence of at least 10 proteins. The presence of several enzymes, including superoxide dismutase and proteases, was demonstrated using Western blots and activity assays. Antisera raised against the secretions recognized bands on Western blots consistent in molecular mass with those identified on silver stained gels. The antisera recognized structures implicated in the production of secretions including the subventral gland cells and surface of J2s.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of the present study was to determine characteristics of fast oscillations in the juvenile rat phrenic nerve (Ph) and to establish their temperature and state dependence. Two different age-matched decerebrate, baro- and chemodenervated rat preparations, in vivo and in situ arterially perfused models, were used to examine three systemic properties: 1) generation and dynamics of fast oscillations in Ph activity (both preparations), 2) responses to anoxia (both preparations), and 3) the effects of temperature on fast oscillations (in situ only). Both juvenile preparations generated power and coherence in two major bands analogous to adult medium- and high-frequency oscillations (HFO) at frequencies that increased with temperature but were lower than in adults. At < 28°C, however, Ph oscillations were confined primarily to one low-frequency band (20–45 Hz). During sustained anoxia, both preparations produced stereotypical state changes from eupnea to hyperpnea to transition bursting (a behavior present only in vivo during incomplete ischemia) to gasping. Thus the juvenile rat produces a sequential pattern of responses to anoxia that are intermediate forms between those produced by neonates and those produced by adults. Time-frequency analysis determined that fast oscillations demonstrated dynamics over the course of the inspiratory burst and a state dependence similar to that of adults in vivo in which hyperpnea (and transition) bursts are associated with increases in HFO, while gasping contains no HFO. Our results confirm that both the fast oscillations in Ph activity and the coherence between Ph pairs produced by the juvenile rat are profoundly state- and temperature-dependent.

Abstract:
The goal of this article is to improve our knowledge concerning the social and personal characteristics of the female gang members. Data have been collected from 150 girls who were convicted by the juvenile court of Montreal during 1992 and 1993. The analysis shows that girls who join gangs have serious handicaps which are related to their social adaptation, their personality and their deviant and delinquent conducts. Consequently, female gang membership responds to a selection process, as it does with the male membership. The profile of the female also changes depending on the structure of the gang to which they join. As the gang becomes more organized, the girls' personality gets worst. However, the context of the organized gangs seems to limit the girls to auxiliary roles rather then being an opportunity to discharge their antisocial potential.
