The Panda Dance Theatre studio is shockingly quiet. Normally the bunker-like church basement at Bathurst and College in downtown Toronto is a whirling dervish of students, twirling sticks, Chinese opera costumes, and chatter. But this afternoon all is calm, including Panda’s artistic leader Xing Bang Fu.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate how bank governance can be altered to reduce risk taking and engender greater financial stability. Design/methodology/approach The paper reviews existing bank governance arrangements, contemporary challenges and alternative reforms. Findings It is argued that recent reforms are incomplete. Greater countervailing incentives for bank managers and shareholders are required. This prompts an inquiry into the merits and demerits of four types of reform: changes to executive compensation arrangements; the introduction of a liability standard for directors; the removal of limited liability for bank shareholders; and a criminal offence for managers. Originality/value Discussion illumines several problems with the current approach to bank governance and provides insights that can help direct future reform.

Abstract:
The origin of the squeal acoustic emissions when a chalk is rubbed on a blackboard or better on a ceramic plate, and those when a wet finger is rubbed on a smooth surface, such as a glass surface, is sought in the stick-slip effect between the rubbing surfaces. In the case of the squealing chalk, the stick-slip effect is anchored by shear modes of vibration in about a 0.3 mm thick chalk powder band at the rubbing interface, while in the case of the wet finger on glass, by such modes in a band comprising the finger skin. Furthermore, there are the interfacial bands at the contact areas that result in the decrease of the friction coefficient with relative velocity of slide, i.e., the condition for the stick-slip effect to occur. Such bands are basically composed of the asperities on the surface of the chalk band and of the epidermis ridges and the water layer, respectively.

Abstract:
Housing is an important component of the consumption basket. Because both rental prices and goods prices are sticky, the literature suggests that optimal monetary policy should stabilize both types of prices, with the optimal weight on rental inflation proportional to the housing expenditure share. In a two-sector DSGE model with sticky rental prices and goods prices, however, we find that the optimal weight on rental inflation in the Taylor rule is small—much smaller than that implied by the housing expenditure share. We show that the asymmetry in policy responses to rent inflation versus goods inflation stems from the asymmetry in factor intensity between the two sectors.

Abstract:
We have shown that Z bands in rat soleus muscles exhibit two structural states. The small square (ss) form is seen in relaxed intact muscle and the basketweave (bw) form is seen in maximally activated muscle (tetanized and in rigor). The Z spacing measured in the bw form is 20% larger than that in the ss form. The dimensions of the two Z band lattice forms in these muscle states are independent of A band spacing. Skinned fibers have been used to assess various muscle properties and expansion of the A band has been observed in some cases. We have examined the effects of chemical skinning on Z band form and dimension and A band spacing in relaxed muscle.Rat soleus muscles were dissected and tied to applicator sticks and removed to a solution of 1% Triton X-100 in lOmM PIPES buffer with 5mM EGTA and lOmM ATP overnight at 4°C, then rinsed with the PIPES buffer with EGTA and ATP only for 4 hours.

The environmental characteristics can modify the acoustics of a species due to habitat, time of day and year. Therefore, this study investigated the relationships between seasons, tide, daily cycle of tides, times of day and different habitat and noise emission of S. guianensis. Sound recordings occurred in the Curral?s Cove and Lagoon Complex of Guara?ras (CLG) in the municipality of Tibau do Sul/RN. Whistles are emitted with lower frequency during rainy season and spring tide while clicks are higher; whistles, clicks and calls have higher frequency during ebb tide. These modifications can be related with turbidity and prey availability. The whistles and clicks occurrence are higher at night probably because luminosity is lower. Furthermore, the whistles and clicks frequency reduction overnight allows the sound to travel longer distance and helps the view which is limited; but the minimum frequency increase was needed to catch the prey. The low occurrence of calls could be related to the small group size. The acoustic changes at night may be partly influenced by light levels as prey availability that is larger in this period. Whistle frequencies and click initial frequency are higher in CLG than Curral?s cove that permitted good precision. However, click central frequency is lower and may be connected to tracking the area. Several factors may be associated with such modifications as background noise, bottom and others. This study supports the hypothesis that S. guianensis presents an acoustic plasticity according to the local conditions where the species is embedded and adapts to the environmental changes.

The present study aimed to examine the existence and relevance of the credit channel, the channel being divided between bank lending and balance sheet channel, the transmission of monetary policy in Brazil from January 2001 to July 2011, for this was used IPCA and IGP-DI. The methodology analyzes the Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR), as Granger causality tests, impulse function and response, variance decomposition analysis and speeds, and this, coming from the test Vector Error Correction (VECM .) The results show the credit channel, bank loans in the segment, important and relevant to raise economic growth, but with greater significance using the IGP-DI, and sustainable over time and an auxiliary channel to channel the money. Since the channel of the balance sheet, despite showing that increases the production of the economy, a channel is negligible, but significant, even if a channel has little development, and most influential currency, securities and exchange. Can not correspond to say that an auxiliary channel of the coin. And that use of the IPCA collaborates with the results of the IGP-DI increasing the production of the Brazilian economy to its potential level. The research concludes that there is in the Brazilian economy during this period, the four transmission channels of monetary policy.

Abstract:
AbstractAmong the developed economies, the UK was the latest to formalize banking supervision as we define it in this book. The process began in the mid-1970s following the fringe bank crisis and the simultaneous beginning of international cooperation on banking regulation matters in the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. The crisis led to the reforms of both the Banking Act and the Bank of England Act in 1979—the Bank of England was assigned its first formal duties and responsibilities for banking supervision, and the commercial banks had to meet bank-specific requirements instead of the general corporate law. However, given the reluctance of the Bank of England to conduct banking supervisory activities as well as the Bank’s behavior to stick with the conventional informal “governor's eyebrow,” we deem the formalization process ongoing until the reforms of 1987. The Banking Act 1987 clarified the Bank of England's responsibilities and mandate regarding banking supervision, and the Board of Banking Supervision was established as a permanent formal organization to monitor and council the Bank of England on supervisory matters. The UK is an interesting case where the banking supervision remained informal until quite recently—compared to other countries. The formalization process can be explained by the crisis and the international push for harmonized banking regulation.

When a series of BTS concerts in Seoul were canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BIGHIT held a unique BTS Online Concert Weekend titled “Bang Bang Con,” featuring an online broadcast of eight BTS concerts from 2014 to 2018, livestreamed on the BangtanTV YouTube channel and on Weverse. Fans watching on Weverse could also link their official light stick, the ARMY Bomb, to the broadcast, so that it would pulse and change color in synch with the music on screen. In “Under the Same Sky: Synchronicity in BTS Media, Online and Offline,” Despina Kakoudaki examines the cyber-physical connection enabled by these digital technologies. Invoking fans’ ability to sync light sticks during a concert livestream, she maps the way copresence creates feelings of intimacy in shared time within the physical realms of in-person events, the digital realms of online spaces, and the physical/digital realms of remote venues.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates employment patterns, remuneration, and power relations in the US financial sector between 1978 and 2008; identifying the economic geography of investment banking as one of the keys to understanding the dynamics of the contemporary world economy, and promoting a mesolevel approach to the study of geographies of finance. It demonstrates that investment banking occupies the most lucrative and powerful position in the securities industry, which has been the primary driving force behind the expansion of the US financial sector in payrolls in recent decades, and the phenomenon described as “financialization” more broadly; suggesting that the latter might be most precisely understood in terms of the rise of “investment bank capitalism.” The power of investment banking has risen since the late 1970s under the conditions of the growing demand for investment services, technological change, deregulation, and globalization. Investment banks are at the heart of the shadow banking system, inventing and producing many of its key products, and contributing decisively to the outbreak of the global financial crisis of 2007–2009. With leading US investment banks converted into bank holding companies and increased reregulation, the future of investment banking is uncertain. The growing concentration of power in the securities industry “buy side,” especially in the hands of passive fund managers and sovereign wealth funds, presents a particular potential challenge to investment banks. Broadly speaking, however, investment banks appear to be mostly adapting to these new challenges, and indeed often harnessing them as opportunities.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter summarizes the basic findings and arguments of the preceding chapters of the book, and examines the question of how to go about reforming the contemporary financial system, drawing on insights gained through the lens of the global financial network framework. It argues that the key to the effective and enduring reform of finance, from the local to national level, is to reorient the focus of reform away from a predominantly reactive emphasis on regulation—which seeks to stamp out the financial practices that we do not want—toward a proactive emphasis on financial institutional building, which seeks to construct the financial system that we actually do want. It argues, moreover, that the logic of this proactive financial institution-building needs to be grounded in an appreciation of the paramount centrality of liquidity production, much more than the provision or intermediation of capital, to the role and operation of the financial system. Specifically, it argues that what is needed is a financial institution-building program that prioritizes the radical “democratization of liquidity,” and lays out the general outlines of how the device of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) might be used to help achieve this, in conjunction with a broader program of reform.

Chapter 6, “Taking Your Data with You: Singapore’s Approach to Data Portability,” authored by Zee Kin Yeong, Deputy Commissioner of Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Commission, and David Roi Hardoon, Senior Advisor of the Union Bank of the Philippines, provides an overview of Singapore’s recently announced regulatory regime on data portability. Many authorities view open banking as a means to increase competition among and with banks and to decrease stickiness of bank deposits. However, bank deposits will remain sticky if customers cannot easily port their personal account information to other sectors beyond financial institutions. Yeong and Hardoon expound on the challenges and opportunities offered by data portability and offer lessons learned to date.

Abstract For centuries the search for how, and even where, golf began has both fascinated and perplexed those who care about such things. No one can say for certain; they can offer only theories. One of those theories traces the game to Roman times, when boys raced through the streets batting a leather ball with a stick. Others say the game originated on the frozen canals of Holland, where the Dutch played a game called het kolven, and since the heavy, unwieldy clubs they used to roll a ball along the ice toward a goal post was called a kolb, or kolf, we see the temptation to believe golf came from Holland, brought across the North Sea by Dutch traders.

Abstract:
A good curriculum for leadership emerges from a discussion of what it is to exercise leadership. Leadership is the opposite of tyranny, so it helps to start by identifying the features of tyranny that students recognize in domineering teachers, coaches, band directors, or parents. Leadership in the real world often blends with authority; even the worst dictators have shown some leadership. We need to distinguish the tools of leadership from those of tyranny, and real-world examples often obscure that distinction, so we need to study the concepts and values involved. Leadership goes beyond carrots and sticks: leadership is most apparent when followers are most free not to follow but do anyway. When women have succeeded as leaders this is especially enlightening, as they have rarely used authority to do so.

Abstract:
PARC, a Xerox Company, is developing a low-cost system of peel-and-stick wireless sensors that will enable widespread building environment sensor deployment with the potential to deliver up to 30% energy savings. The system is embodied by a set of RF hubs that provide power to automatically located sensor nodes, and relay data wirelessly to the building management system (BMS). The sensor nodes are flexible electronic labels powered by rectified RF energy transmitted by an RF hub and can contain multiple printed and conventional sensors. The system design overcomes limitations in wireless sensors related to power delivery, lifetime, and cost by eliminating batteries and photovoltaic devices. Sensor localization is performed automatically by the inclusion of a programmable multidirectional antenna array in the RF hub. Comparison of signal strengths while the RF beam is swept allows for sensor localization, reducing installation effort and enabling automatic recommissioning of sensors that have been relocated, overcoming a significant challenge in building operations. PARC has already demonstrated wireless power and temperature data transmission up to a distance of 20m with less than one minute between measurements, using power levels well within the FCC regulation limits in the 902–928 MHz ISM band. The sensor’s RF energy harvesting antenna achieves high performance with dimensions below 5cm × 9cm.

"Minimising Torsional Vibration Due to Stick Slip Using Z Technology for Drilling Energy Efficiency in Multiple Hard Stringers Field in Offshore Malaysia." Abstract:
Abstract Field T is well known with its multiple layers of hard stringers that can go up to 25 ksi UCS at certain intervals, predominantly in 12-1/4" and 8-1/2" hole section. This can lead to stick-slip problem whereby the drill bit momentarily stalls due to high static friction, while the drill string keeps rotating. As a result, torque will buildup in pipe until it overcomes the friction at the bit, resulting in the drill pipe unwinding itself. Over time, this issue results in reduced drilling efficiency (i.e. lower ROP), eventually causing damage to the bit or worse, twisting off the BHA, which translates into high cost exposure to the Operator. During the exploration phase, the Operator required on average, 4 to 7 bit trips to drill 12-1/4" hole section and 2 to 4 trips were required to drill 8-1/2" hole section. The most reported reason to pull out of the hole were, BHA change out, downhole tool failure (DTF) and low rate of penetration (ROP). The bits’ inner & outer cutters were also reported to be damaged with dull grading as high as wear value of 7 or 8. Z technology is a torsional vibration mitigation system that uses wide band impedance (Z) matching concept that aims to absorb all torque waves arriving at top drive by overcoming inertia of motor & gearbox. The Z Technology changes the conventional hard boundary condition of a standard top drive (TD) RPM controller that is "stiff" (constant RPM) which results in full reflection of all torsional waves. A "stiff" TD control system leads to growth of standing waves (A combination of TD constant RPM & stick-slip "unwind" RPM) in the string which eventually may lead to torsional vibrations to the drill bit and/or motor housing/BHA. While drilling Development Phase 1B, Z Technology was seen to be effective in mitigating stick-slip. As a result, more mechanical specific energy (MSE) was available to be transmitted to the bit for formation rock removal. All three wells in the Phase 1B campaign managed to achieve the highest ROP in T field. This translated into cost savings in rig time and cost avoidance to Operator due to BHA damage. The paper will discuss the details of the Z Technology mechanism, its implementation and evaluating its effectiveness in minimizing torsional vibration due to the stick-slip issue.

Abstract:
The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) has been selected by NASA as a second-generation instrument for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Its main advantage over the first-generation spectrographs, i.e., the Faint-Object Spectrograph (FOS) and the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS), lies in the use of area detectors. Two of these are 51.2 mm × 51.2 mm, 2048 × 2048 pixel Multiple-Anode Microchannel Arrays (MAMA), covering the wavelength ranges 105 nm - 170 nm (Band I, CsI photocathode) and 170 nm - 300 nm (Band II, CsTe photocathode). The other two are 55.3 mm × 55.3 mm, 2048 × 2048 pixel CCDs for the wavelength ranges 300 nm - 600 nm (Band III) and 550 nm - 1100 nm (Band IV). Each detector serves five or six different modes of operation, including low and medium-resolution first-orderspectral imaging (R = 1000 and R = 14,000), medium and high-resolution echelle modes (R = 15,000 and R = 120,000) and also a 50 arcsec × 50 arcsec camera. The optical system consists of a collimator, a grating/mirror wheel and separate refocussing optics for each individual mode. The collimator is an off-axis elliptical toroid, preceded by a 25-position slit selector.

Abstract:
The paper investigates structural coupling problems in tiltrotor aircraft. A detailed tiltrotor model, representative of the Bell XV-15, has been built. The airframe model has been modified with a thinner wing to better reveal structural coupling proneness. A linearized FCS has been introduced to analyze the overall stability on an extended frequency band, ranging from the flight mechanics up to the aeroelastic modes. In addition to the FCS, biomechanical models of the pilot, acting on the power-lever and on the center stick, are included in feedback loop. Overall stability analyses demonstrate that the FCS improves handling qualities although several structural coupling mechanisms arise, in combination with the involuntary pilot’s response, reducing flutter clearance. A modified version of the XV-15, using differential collective pitch for yaw control in airplane mode, has been also investigated. This configuration reduces costs and weights although the FCS destabilizes the antisymmetric wing chord mode at low speed flight, severely limiting the flight envelope. Means of prevention, based on notch filters, are implemented and discussed.

Abstract:
The present study focuses on the relations between China and the European Union by taking into consideration a specific matter of discord: The arms embargo, which is effective since 1987 and which has political and economic repercussions. Chinese authorities have frequently asked for the removal of the embargo, but the European authorities declined despite internal divisions. Nevertheless, commercial relations between Brussels and Beijing grow bigger and no deterioration is expected in the foreseeable future. The objective of the study is to find the reasons why the embargo may still remain in place. The reason why European authorities stick to the ban is threefold. First, their arms sales to China can lead to a shift in the balance of power with undesired consequences. Second, the European Union is backed by major powers (especially Japan and the USA) on the issue. Third, the current stalemate has not impeded the development of political and economic relations between Beijing and Brussels so far.

Abstract:
Borehole Imaging technology is often key for reservoir characterization and becomes more relevant when images are acquired while drilling to capture reservoir geology and petrophysical property distributions around the borehole. Logging While Drilling (LWD) high-resolution electrical/acoustics images of the borehole can resolve formation layers and heterogeneity down to 5mm (0.2in) scale and can detect response from far smaller features. This allows both, improved operational efficiency and better-informed drilling as well as shortening of the geological interpretation turn-around time from wireline logging time (days after drilling) to semi-real time (drilling time or hours after drilling). LWD high resolution images often suffer from the lack of direct downhole velocity measurements against the sensors. Depth tracking is on surface, referenced to the surface block movement. The imaging sensor acquiring data can be thousands of feet away from this surface reference. Imaging sensors on the bottom-hole assembly (BHA) are located not too far away from the drill bit. They are also subject to complex drilling-time motion such as tool whirling, stick and slip, vibration, mode coupling etc. This can make the downhole sensor movement dis-synchronized with the surface pipe depth increment. The Time-Depth conversion may accordingly get dis-synchronized to generate LWD depth image with missing features and distorted feature-integrity in depth. In severe conditions distorted image impacts real time image feature interpretation and leads to increased interpretation uncertainties. In this paper we investigate two main dis-synchronization problems using synthetic data: heave effect and BHA stick and slip effect. Pseudo velocity is computed from the surface measurement due to the lack of downhole sensor velocity direct measurement. In order to minimize heave effect, an advanced band-pass filter is proposed. The filter order is chosen in consistency with the sensor’s pseudo velocity behavior. Other properties of this advanced filter are also presented. In order to minimize the BHA stick and slip effect, pseudo velocity is analyzed as a delayed and minimized representative of the downhole sensor movement. A windowed-thresholding method is proposed to restore the compressed and stretched image features. Dip error analysis is performed by picking bed and fracture surface on the synthetic image data, before and after image distortion correction. The analysis results show a non-negligible effect on the accuracy of the true dip computed if the distortions are left un-corrected. Even in favorable logging conditions, the apparent dip error can contribute up to 50% of the total error. In this case, the image post-processing method proposed in this paper can not only improve the image quality but also reduce image interpretation uncertainties.

Full text
Abstract:
In this article, the effects of noise on a base-excited cantilever structure with nonlinear tip force interactions are studied by using experimental, numerical, and analytical methods. The focus of the study is on the enhancement of the cantilever response, when Gaussian white noise is added to the harmonic base input. The experimental arrangement consists of a base-excited elastic cantilever with a magnet attached to its free end. An attractive force is generated at the cantilever tip magnet through another magnet of opposite polarity, which is fixed to a translatory stage. The second magnet is covered by a thin compliant material, with which the tip magnet makes intermittent contact when the cantilever is subjected to a base excitation. For a purely harmonic excitation, it is observed that the tip magnet of the cantilever sticks to the base magnet due to the attractive force. Starting from a situation where the cantilever tip is sticking to the surface, band-limited white Gaussian noise is added to the excitation and the strength of noise is gradually increased. The cantilever tip resumes its periodic motion when the strength of added noise reaches a sufficient signal to noise ratio. This phenomenon is explored by using a reduced-order numerical model and an analytical framework involving the application of a moment-evolution approximation derived from the associated Fokker Planck equation for the system. Since the macro-scale experimental system qualitatively replicates the micro-scale attractive-repulsive force interaction experienced by an atomic force microscope cantilever operated in tapping mode, this study sheds light on the possible use of white noise to control the sticking of such micro-scale cantilevers with sample surfaces.

Abstract:
That four- and five-year-olds can do algebra, arithmetic, and geometry may be hard to believe. But if you visit a preschool classroom in the Cordillera region of Paraguay, you will see children who learn factoring by organizing balls and sticks into groups, and who work together to form pentagons and hexagons with their bodies. These children are participating in a project called "Tikichuela, Mathematics in My School", the result of a partnership between the Japanese and Paraguayan governments, the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The idea behind the curriculum is that preschool children need to learn premath skills to build a foundation for primary- and secondary-level mathematics. Assessed after five months, the math skills of children in the program had increased significantly compared with those of a group of children not in the program. This brief describes the implementation of the pilot program and its qualitative and quantitative findings.
