Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate how bank governance can be altered to reduce risk taking and engender greater financial stability. Design/methodology/approach The paper reviews existing bank governance arrangements, contemporary challenges and alternative reforms. Findings It is argued that recent reforms are incomplete. Greater countervailing incentives for bank managers and shareholders are required. This prompts an inquiry into the merits and demerits of four types of reform: changes to executive compensation arrangements; the introduction of a liability standard for directors; the removal of limited liability for bank shareholders; and a criminal offence for managers. Originality/value Discussion illumines several problems with the current approach to bank governance and provides insights that can help direct future reform.

Abstract:
The origin of the squeal acoustic emissions when a chalk is rubbed on a blackboard or better on a ceramic plate, and those when a wet finger is rubbed on a smooth surface, such as a glass surface, is sought in the stick-slip effect between the rubbing surfaces. In the case of the squealing chalk, the stick-slip effect is anchored by shear modes of vibration in about a 0.3 mm thick chalk powder band at the rubbing interface, while in the case of the wet finger on glass, by such modes in a band comprising the finger skin. Furthermore, there are the interfacial bands at the contact areas that result in the decrease of the friction coefficient with relative velocity of slide, i.e., the condition for the stick-slip effect to occur. Such bands are basically composed of the asperities on the surface of the chalk band and of the epidermis ridges and the water layer, respectively.

Abstract:
Housing is an important component of the consumption basket. Because both rental prices and goods prices are sticky, the literature suggests that optimal monetary policy should stabilize both types of prices, with the optimal weight on rental inflation proportional to the housing expenditure share. In a two-sector DSGE model with sticky rental prices and goods prices, however, we find that the optimal weight on rental inflation in the Taylor rule is small—much smaller than that implied by the housing expenditure share. We show that the asymmetry in policy responses to rent inflation versus goods inflation stems from the asymmetry in factor intensity between the two sectors.

We have shown that Z bands in rat soleus muscles exhibit two structural states. The small square (ss) form is seen in relaxed intact muscle and the basketweave (bw) form is seen in maximally activated muscle (tetanized and in rigor). The Z spacing measured in the bw form is 20% larger than that in the ss form. The dimensions of the two Z band lattice forms in these muscle states are independent of A band spacing. Skinned fibers have been used to assess various muscle properties and expansion of the A band has been observed in some cases. We have examined the effects of chemical skinning on Z band form and dimension and A band spacing in relaxed muscle.Rat soleus muscles were dissected and tied to applicator sticks and removed to a solution of 1% Triton X-100 in lOmM PIPES buffer with 5mM EGTA and lOmM ATP overnight at 4°C, then rinsed with the PIPES buffer with EGTA and ATP only for 4 hours.

Abstract:
AbstractThe relative attractiveness of coloured sticky board traps to the carrot fly (Psila rosae (Fabricius)) is described by a model in which fly catch is related positively to the amount of light reflected from the trap in the green-yellow (550–570 nm) band of the spectrum and negatively to the amount reflected in the violet-green (390–550 nm) band. The model allows the performance of new coloured traps to be predicted solely from spectral reflectivity measurements. Similar numbers of carrot flies were caught/unit area on traps varying in size from 150 cm2 to 4800 cm2. Most flies were caught on traps resting on the ground. The number of flies caught was reduced by 0.84% for each cm the trap was raised above 10 cm from the ground. One-sided sticky traps angled at 45° to the vertical doubled the numbers of carrot flies caught/unit trapping area and reduced by 90% the numbers of non-target species caught.

AbstractIn a model of dual-agency problems where borrower–lender and bank–nonbank incentives may conflict, we predict a hockey stick relation between bank skin in the game and covenant tightness. As bank participation declines, covenant tightness increases until reaching a low threshold, at which point the relation sharply reverses and covenant protection is removed with a commensurate increase in spread. We find support for the hockey stick relation with bank’s stake in covenant-lite loans averaging 8% (0% median). We also find that covenant-lite loans are more likely when borrower moral hazard is less severe and when bank relationship rents are high.

Abstract:
Fitness bands are widely available and assist with tracking the number of steps taken. However, for older people with slow gaits, shorter step widths and/or use of ambulatory devices, the accuracy of fitness bands for step counting has not been well studied. Using four commercially available fitness bands (Garmin Vivofit2™, Fitbit Flex™, Up3™ and Microsoft Band™), we studied 30 older people with varying ambulatory abilities. We videotaped participants walking and compared the videotaped step count with the fitness band counts. Only 5 of the 30 participants had accurate readings within a ±20 percent accuracy for all four bands. There was no relationship between the step speed and accuracy of the fitness bands. Participants using walkers and walking sticks had none of the bands that met the ±20 percent accuracy. Canes were more variable with accuracy. Fitness band manufacturers may need to tune their algorithms for use by older people.

Full text
Abstract:
The origin of the acoustic and seismic emissions from impacted singing grains and from avalanching dune sand grains is sought in modes of vibration in discreet grain columns. It is postulated that when the grains in a column are pressed together and forced to slide over one another, elastic shear bands are formed at the contact areas with distinct elastic moduli. Such contact shear bands would have implications in the formulation of the Hertz–Mindlin contact theory. The assembly of all grain columns below the impacting pestle forms the slip (slide) shear band. The transfer of energy from the pestle to the modes of vibration in such columns is effected by the stick–slip effect. The intense collective vibration of all columns in the slip shear band results in the familiar musical sound. The concept of grain flowability is used to justify the disparity between the acoustic emissions from impacted singing grains and from avalanching booming dune sand grains. The concept of grain columns is assumed to apply in the freely avalanching sand band, but with longer length to justify the lower frequencies. This approach predicts frequency spectra comprising a low-frequency content and a dominant frequency with its harmonics in agreement with the experimental evidence. Additionally, it can account for the low-frequency vibration evoked when booming sand flows through a funnel, with implications in the understanding of grain silo vibrations. It is argued that sand grains do not sing or boom because the stick–slip effect in not applicable in the contact shear bands.

Abstract:
AbstractThe twolined chestnut borer, Agrilus bilineatus (Weber) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), is associated with mortality of stressed oaks in the eastern deciduous forests of North America. Beetles were attracted to stressed trees within hours of the onset of stress. We hypothesized that adult beetles rapidly locate suitable hosts by olfactory detection of tree-released volatiles. Trees with sticky-band traps and vane traps baited with crude steam distillates from inner bark of stressed white oaks, or with combinations of ethanol and oak volatiles, captured significantly more beetles than did water controls. Ethanol alone did not attract significant numbers of A. bilineatus. Eighty-two percent of beetles captured were females. Ethanol-baited traps captured large numbers of Cerambycidae, Scolytidae, and a few Cleridae, and these insects were not attracted to oak volatiles. Sticky-band traps were more effective than vane traps in capturing A. bilineatus and other Buprestidae, but Cerambycidae and Scolytidae were more effectively captured in vane traps. Our results show that A. bilineatus is attracted to oak volatiles but later successional beetles are attracted to ethanol.

Abstract:
AbstractSticky-band trapping experiments were undertaken in 2003–2006 to examine the host-seeking behaviour of the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, in woodlots in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The female proportion of A. plannipennis emerging from host logs ranged from 0.414 to 0.582. Landings on sticky-band traps varied more with the female proportion, ranging from 0.392 to 0.889, with the majority in the upper range, suggesting behavioural differences between the sexes. Correlations between landing density and tree size measured as diameter at breast height were positive or showed no relationship. In some locations more beetles were captured on the south side of the tree than on the north side; however, there was no difference between these cardinal directions at other locations. Numbers of captured beetles were never significantly greater on the north side of boles. We observed greater landing densities of adults of both sexes on traps on trees along the edges of woodlots than on trees within the woodlots. When given a choice under natural conditions, beetles landed almost exclusively on host trees (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh. (Oleaceae)) rather than on other common trees species (Carya ovata (Mill.) K. Koch (Juglandaceae), Tilia americana L. (Tiliaceae), and species of Acer L. (Aceraceae)) found in the same woodlots. Our data suggest that A. planipennis make host-selection decisions while in flight rather than landing randomly. Implications for monitoring A. plannipennis using sticky-band traps and understanding its host-seeking behaviour are discussed.

Abstract:
A nonlinear compensation force for stick-slip friction is developed to supplement a proportional + derivative control law applied to a one-degree-of-freedom mechanical system. Inertial control objects acted on by stick-slip friction are common mechanical components in mechanical servo systems and the conceptual model chosen for this investigation is a mass sliding on a rough surface. The choice of a discontinuous compensation force is motivated by the requirement that the desired reference be a unique equilibrium point of the system. The stick-slip friction force, modelled with a sticking force term and a slipping force term, generates discontinuous state derivatives. A Lyapunov function is introduced to prove global asymptotic stability of the desired reference using a modification of the direct method for discontinuous systems. Stability is verified numerically as well as experimentally. The nonlinear compensation force is robust with respect to the character of the slipping force which is assumed to lie within a piecewise linear band. Exact knowledge of the static friction force levels is not required, only upper bounds for these levels. Stability and control effectiveness is verified analytically, numerically and experimentally on a laboratory test stand.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractTetropium fuscum (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is an invasive phloeophagous beetle established in Atlantic Canada that infests stressed and moribund Picea Dietrich (Pinaceae) species. Successfully colonised trees tend to be large in diameter (>10 cm diameter at breast height), but whether diameter influences host selection, larval performance, or both, is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that T. fuscum host selection is influenced by visual cues associated with tree diameter by counting the number of adults landing on 29 Picea rubens Sargent ranging in diameter at breast height from 12.2 to 37.5 cm. All trees were wrapped with sticky bands and baited with aggregation pheromone and host volatiles to make them equally attractive with regard to olfactory cues. We found significant positive relationships between the mean number of T. fuscum per sticky band and tree diameter, and also between phloem thickness and tree diameter. We conclude that the positive association between host diameter and T. fuscum infestation is at least partially due to the positive influence of diameter on landing rate, and that this may benefit the beetle because larger diameter trees have more food for developing larvae. However, there was no effect of tree diameter on the mean number of adults per m2 of sticky band and thus no evidence that T. fuscum actively selects larger diameter hosts based on visual cues. The positive relationship between landing rate and host diameter may simply be due to greater chances of airborne beetles being passively intercepted on larger versus smaller trees.

Abstract:
Policy layering has received significant scholarly attention in recent years as a means to explain and understand the outcomes of policy implementation efforts, particularly within the context of incremental change. However, little is known about how processes of policy layering and institutional legacies play out in (relatively rare) system-wide and transformative policy reforms. This article presents a critical case study of one such reform—the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). In examining the implementation experiences of the NDIS, we resist the bifurcation of the study of policy dynamics into a stability versus big bang dualism by revealing that many influential and constraining factors in a layering process are common across both incremental and transformative reforms. Moreover, we find that layering is not merely an unfortunate by-product of previous institutional structures but a tool that is actively sought and used by policy makers to tackle implementation challenges that, once set in motion, can move beyond the ability of policy makers to control.

Abstract:
The present paper aims to propose an explanation for the rationale behind the current banking regulatory arrangement in China. A now stable and relatively healthy banking system emerged largely unscathed from the financial crisis without relying much on recognized international best practices in bank supervision. China combines a strong regulatory hand together with a capital adequacy requirements stick, without much intervention of foreign or private institutions in the larger sense of the term. After an in-depth review of the Chinese framework we recognize that it is exactly this lip service to private monitoring mechanisms on top of restrictive regulators that allows for stability and growth - at least for now. China uses Chinese supervision as the core and western regulatory instruments as useful add-ons - a manner similar to the catch phrase used over a century ago to rejuvenate China.

Starting from the principle that the integer-period sampling (IPS) of periodic signals is free of spectrum leakage, in this paper we propose the multisine-IPS theory, deduce theoretically the sampling rate setting formula of multisine-IPS condition for the first time, and build its realization method based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) plus digital-to-analog converter (DAC) plus analog-to-digital converter (ADC). A new multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (mfEIT) system based on multisine excitation and its IPS theory is developed, and a dual-target imaging model including a carrot stick and a cucumber stick is designed. The experiments of multi-frequency time-difference imaging and frequency-difference imaging are carried out on the mfEIT system. The experimental results show that the newly-designed mfEIT system can achieve full-band impedance measurements on multiple objective tissue boundary at 20 frequency points (2–997 kHz) within one fundamental period (1 ms), and the structure and position of biological tissues with different electrical properties can also be distinguished from the resulting images. The proposed multisine-IPS theory and its implementation method can complete a full-band impedance measurement within one multisine fundamental period, which lays a theoretical and technical foundation for developing high-speed mfEIT system.

Abstract:
Downhole drill string vibration data can provide an effective reference for research drill string vibration during drilling. In this paper, the research group used a storage-type downhole vibration measurement equipment equipped with an orthogonal, three-axis accelerometer to measure and collect drill string vibration signals during drilling in an oil well. Based on the installation characteristics of the sensor, the relationship between the acceleration measurement value of the sensor and the center acceleration value of the drill string is obtained. Then the time-domain signals representative of the vibration in igneous rock drilling is analyzed. It can be found that the occurrence of stick-slip vibration can be judged by the regular wave packets in the time-domain signal, while the time-domain signal of whirl is disorderly. The main frequency of stick-slip vibration in the low-frequency band is 0.1221 Hz and the period of stick-slip vibration is very close to 10 s through Fast Fourier (FFT) and Short-time Fourier transform (DTFT) methods. In the process of whirling, two frequencies, respectively, 0.05341 Hz and 155.5 Hz, play a major role. The frequency 0.05341 Hz is very close to the reciprocal of the period of 20 s when the peak energy spectrum density appears, indicating that the occurrence of whirl is very likely to be related to the natural frequency of the drilling tool. Through further time-frequency analysis, it also can be found that the occurrence of whirl and stick-slip is greatly related to the use of torsional impactors and jars.

Abstract:
AbstractFor the last 50 years, populations of the Bruce spanworm, Operophtera bruceata Hulst, and other wingless geometrid species have been sampled using sticky bands placed around host-tree trunks to catch wingless females in search of oviposition sites. This method is tedious and, because of trap saturation by males, may underestimate female populations at moderate to high levels. A standard oviposition trap was developed to sample eggs of the Bruce spanworm and other wingless geometrid species. A small polyurethane foam band placed on a post covered by a Multi-Pher® plate detected low populations and was almost unsaturable during outbreaks. Sub-sampling can be easily done in such situations. Egg density on oviposition traps was higher than female density on sticky bands for both the Bruce spanworm and the fall cankerworm, Alsophila pometaria Harris. This suggests that the oviposition trap might be useful to sample other wingless geometrid species. Operating this system was easy and could involve woodlot owners and companies to reduce the traveling costs necessary to collect samples.

Abstract:
Orthogonal metal cutting process involves large plastic deformation accompanied by excessive heat generation. This work addresses the thermal-mechanical responses of the workpiece material at the tool-workpiece contact. In this respect, the orthogonal cutting process of Ti-6Al-4V using CVD diamond tool is simulated using finite element method. The cutting condition consists of cutting speed, V=180 m/min, feed rate, t=0.125 mm/rev and width of cut of 1.25 mm. Eulerian formulation with coupled thermal-mechanical analysis is employed in the model. The Johnson- Cook constitutive equation is employed for Ti-6Al-4V workpiece material to accurately simulate the formation of shear bands. The stick-slip friction condition is modeled at the tool-chip interface. The sliding coefficient of friction of 0.8 and the limiting shear stress of 700 MPa for stick-slip condition are determined experimentally. Results show that high temperature and temperature gradient concentrate in the primary shear zone and the contact area between the tool rake face and the chip. A primary shear band is predicted in the workpiece ahead of the tool-workpiece contact face while the secondary shear band is formed in the chip. This highly-deformed shear band is revealed in the microstructure of etched chips. The predicted high strain rate results in build-up edge at tool cutting edge-chip contact. Low cutting condition of V=150 m/min, t=0.125 mm/rev promotes stagnant zone formation that helps preserve the cutting edge of the tool. The maximum predicted temperature at the cutting edge is in excess of 700 °C. Such high temperature level facilitates diffusion of carbon elements into the chips and conversely, elements of titanium into the CVD diamond tool.

Abstract:
Comparing a discrete molecular spectrum to a continuous molecular spectrum in a quantitative manner is a challenging problem, for example, when attempting to fit a theoretical stick spectrum to a continuous spectrum. In this paper, the use of computational optimal transport is investigated for such a problem. In the optimal transport literature, the comparison of a discrete and a continuous spectrum is referred to as semi-discrete optimal transport and is a situation where a metric such as least-squares may be difficult to define except under special conditions. The merits of an optimal transport approach for this problem are investigated using the transport distance defined for the semi-discrete case. A tutorial on semi-discrete optimal transport for molecular spectra is included in this paper, and several well-chosen synthetic spectra are investigated to demonstrate the utility of computational optimal transport for the semi-discrete case. Among several types of investigations, we include calculations showing how the frequency resolution of the continuous spectrum affects the transport distance between a discrete and a continuous spectrum. We also use the transport distance to measure the distance between a continuous experimental electronic absorption spectrum of SO2 and a theoretical stick spectrum for the same system. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental SO2 spectra also allows us to suggest a theoretical value for the band origin that is closer to the observed band origin than previous theoretical values.

Abstract:
Among the present technologies for WLAN devices, USB dongles still play a noticeable role. One major design challenge regards the antenna, which unavoidably has to comply with a very small volume available and sometimes should also allow multiband operation. In this scope, the present work discusses a dual-band WiFi compact planar IFA-based antenna design for a low-cost USB dongle application. Like most of the related published solutions, the methodology for deriving the present proposition was assisted by the use of an antenna analysis software. A prototype was assembled and tested in order to qualify the radiator design. Practical operation conditions were considered in the tests, such as the influence of the dongle case and the effect of the notebook itself. The results complied with the design constraints, presenting an impedance match quite stable regardless of the stick position alongside a laptop base.

Abstract:
The c-axis polarized phonon spectra of single crystals of YBa2Cu3O6+x, were measured for the doping range x = 0.5 → 0.95, between 10 and 300 K. The low background electronic conductivity, determined by Kramers–Kronig analysis of the reflectance, leads to a rich phonon structure. With decreased doping the five normally-active B1u modes broaden and the high-frequency apical-oxygen mode splits into two components. We associate the higher of these with the two-fold coordinated copper "sticks". The 155 cm−1 low-frequency mode, which involves the apical and the chain oxygens, splits into at least three components with decreasing doping. Some phonon anomalies that occur near Tc in the highly doped material occur well above Tc in the oxygen-reduced systems. An unusual broad phonon band develops in the normal state at ≈ 400 cm−1, which becomes more intense at low doping and low temperatures, borrowing oscillator strength from apical- and plane-oxygen modes resulting in a major transformation of the phonon spectrum below ≈150 K.

Objectives: This validation test was conducted in the Fujisan Blood Bank, Fortaleza, Brazil and evaluated the noninvasive TensorTip MTX (MTX, Cnoga Medical Ltd.) readings of hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells, blood pressure, and heart rate compared to reference lab device readings. Generally, these parameters are measured from venous or capillary blood samples run on a laboratory analyzer or handheld invasive testing devices. Needle sticks are inconvenient to blood donors with relatively high exposure risks. To our vision, noninvasive determination would be of benefit to blood contributors and medical professional teams; it would be fast and painless. Methods: A total of 334 subjects were included in the Fujisan blood bank validation (65% male, 35% female). Hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cells, as well as blood pressure and heart rate, were measured noninvasively using the MTX device and were compared to venous blood samples run on two laboratory hematology analyzers (Horiba ABX Micros60 and Siemens blood count analyzer), to digital sphygmomanometer (OMRON BP786) and to manual auscultation. The noninvasive measurement with the appropriate virtual arm cuff setting was performed simultaneously with the blood sample extraction of the reference devices measurement. Results: There was no statistically significant difference ( p > 0.05, paired, two-tailed t-test) between the average daily hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cells measurements provided by the MTX device and the laboratory hematology analyzer. In addition, there was no significant difference between the daily blood pressure and heart rate results provided by the MTX device and the digital and manual sphygmomanometers. The error calculated between the MTX and the reference device was found to be sufficiently accurate according to the relevant standards. Conclusion: The MTX accuracy of noninvasive hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells, blood pressure, and heart rate measurements satisfies the industrial standards; therefore, the device enables more accurate, efficient, and effective patient care.

Abstract:
Stock price forecasting is a type of time series issue that anticipates a company's condition based on an analysis of time values. To address the Buy-Sell-Hold problem, investors need to make accurate predictions about future indices or stock price changes. In this study, data was collected for 6 months (February 2023 to July 2023), and technical trading tools such as candlesticks, Bollinger Band, and MACD were used. While personal views of respondents were taken from Google Form Questionnaire Surveys to determine the Buy-Sell-Hold in NEPSE. A questionnaire survey yielded 62 responses. A combined chart of Candle Sticks, BB, and MACD gives better results compared to the analysis of a single technical indicator. This data shows that 70.97% agreed that the technical analysis gives the right path and decision, and the rest 29.03% did not agree with the technical analysis to predict the Buy-Sell-Hold decisions. However, seeing the statically, real distribution of the "Buy-Sell-Hold" would be helpful for a fuller analysis and understanding of the data. These analyses can be favourable to the good economic and political condition of Nepal.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, people are afraid to meet other people because they are afraid of getting infected, as well as people who work as tellers, where these tellers meet other people every day. In order to reduce the fear and worry of the people, the idea emerged to design a desk organizer equipped with ultraviolet-C where this ultraviolet-C light can also kill COVID-19 with a certain spectrum. The study was carried out by conducting interviews with several tellers and the conclusion was that there was still not much use of ultraviolet-C rays in banks to sterilize goods, where cleanliness of goods was very important during this COVID-19, the use of ultraviolet-C rays is still being used. to check the authenticity of the money. The innovation that he wants to produce is the use of ultraviolet-C rays that can sterilize goods where there are still not many uses of ultraviolet-C rays in banks. On the other hand, tellers also need a desk organizer so that the table is always neat, therefore the innovation is designed, namely a desk organizer equipped with a slot to sterilize goods using Ultraviolet-C rays with the aim of not only keeping the table tidy, it can also be used to disconnect the chain of spread of COVID-19 that can stick to goods.

Abstract:
This article presents a quad-element MIMO antenna designed for multiband operation. The prototype of the design is fabricated and utilizes a vector network analyzer (VNA-AV3672D) to measure the S-parameters. The proposed antenna is capable of operating across three broad frequency bands: 3–15.5 GHz, encompassing the C band (4–8 GHz), X band (8–12.4 GHz), and a significant portion of the Ku band (12.4–15.5 GHz). Additionally, it covers two mm-wave bands, specifically 26.4–34.3 GHz and 36.1–48.9 GHz, which corresponds to 86% of the Ka-band (27–40 GHz). To enhance its performance, the design incorporates a partial ground plane and a top patch featuring a dual-sided reverse 3-stage stair and a straight stick symmetrically placed at the bottom. The introduction of a defected ground structure (DGS) on the ground plane serves to provide a wideband response. The DGS on the ground plane plays a crucial role in improving the electromagnetic interaction between the grounding surface and the top patch, contributing to the wideband characteristics of the antenna. The dimensions of the proposed MIMO antenna are 31.7 mm × 31.7 mm × 1.6 mm. Furthermore, the article delves into the assessment of various performance metrics related to antenna diversity, such as ECC, DG, TARC, MEG, CCL, and channel capacity, with corresponding values of 0.11, 8.87 dB, −6.6 dB, ±3 dB, 0.32 bits/sec/Hz, and 18.44 bits/sec/Hz, respectively. Additionally, the equivalent circuit analysis of the MIMO system is explored in the article. It’s worth noting that the measured results exhibit a strong level of agreement with the simulated results, indicating the reliability of the proposed design. The MIMO antenna’s ability to exhibit multiband response, good diversity performance, and consistent channel capacity across various frequency bands renders it highly suitable for integration into multi-band wireless devices. The developed MIMO system should be applicable on n77/n78/n79 5G NR (3.3–5 GHz); WLAN (4.9–5.725 GHz); Wi-Fi (5.15–5.85 GHz); LTE5537.5 (5.15–5.925 GHz); WiMAX (5.25–5.85 GHz); WLAN (5.725–5.875 GHz); long-distance radio telecommunication (4–8 GHz; C-band); satellite, radar, space communications and terrestrial broadband (8–12 GHz; X-band); and various satellite communications (27–40 GHz; Ka-band).

Abstract:
For the swift generation of hierarchical nanostructures of CdS, we propose herein a docile microwave-induced semi-solvothermal reaction (i.e., involving simultaneous usage of nonaqueous and aqueous solvents) between cadmium acetate and thiourea in binary solution of diethylenetriamine and deionized water. Typically, such microwave-assisted reaction was accomplished within 5 minutes as against 12 h required in conventional approach. The resultant products were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis by X-rays, laser Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction data indicates occurrence of hexagonal CdS with strong (002) preferred orientation. SEM images reveal formation of solvent-ratio dependent complex morphological (i.e., hierarchical) features both at the microscale and nanoscale. Fine-scale microstructure examination by TEM discloses formation of entangled nanorods, nano(potato)sticks, nanoflowers etc. Elemental analysis facility (equipped with TEM) suggests presence of Cd rich product. Raman spectroscopy shows the fundamental and overtone bands pertaining to hexagonal CdS with remarkable enhancement in relative intensities of such bands in case of sample corresponding to diethylen-etriamine(DETA)/deionized water(DI) volume ratio of 6:1. Room temperature photoluminescence spectra mainly reveal broad asymmetric emission background composed of classical band edge and trap-induced emission in CdS.

Abstract:
Abstract A field study was conducted to evaluate chlorpyrifos (Dursban M) and tralomefhrin alone, and combined with XRD-473 (an experimental insect growth regulator), and cypermethrin (Demon W) alone for German cockroach control. The study site consisted or 30 apartments (each treatment replicated 10 x) in Omaha, NE which were similar in construction and size. Initially, cockroach population estimates were made by placing sticky traps (Mr. Sticky®) in each structure under the kitchen sink, adjacent to the stove or refrigerator, behind the toilet in each bathroom, and near the waterheater. Traps were left in the units for 1 night, collected and the cockroaches counted to determine mean number of cockroaches/trap/night (precount). Residences were then treated with a water emulsion spray of Dursban M, tralomethrin, Dursban plus XRD-473, tralomethrin plus XRD-473, or with Demon. The treatments were applied with a standard 1 gal B&G® hand sprayer fitted with a multee-jet® nozzle set on coarse fan spray. The insecticides were applied in a continuous band along baseboards, around the doorways, windows and all entrances, beneath the sink, stove and refrigerator, in and on all shelves and cabinets, and around plumbing and other utility installations. Cockroaches were trapped, using the same procedures as described above, at monthly intervals through 6 mo. Trap counts following applications (postcount) were converted to percentage reduction of cockroach populations for each house, based on precounts using the following formula; Percentage reduction = [(precount ° postcount) / precount] × 100. Because the percentage reduction data were not normally distributed, the data were transformed to ranks, within times, and analyzed using ANOVA procedures.
