Prior research has documented effects of bank loan covenant violations on various firm behaviors from the perspective of shareholders. Our paper extends this stream of research by examining how bank loan covenant violations affect public corporate bondholders. Using an event study approach, we find that the bond price response to a bank loan covenant violation is marginally negative in the 1990s and becomes significantly positive in the 2000s. The favorable price response in more recent years indicates that bondholders benefit from covenant violations. The differential bond price responses sug

I analyse bank adverts and campaigns directed at women, especially a recurring campaign by Handelsbanken for housewives in the 1960s. Interpreting these events as performances of the marketisation of domestic money and of the domestication of banking services, I argue that by playing on emotions, family life, consumerism and, literally, everydayness, the campaigns mobilised femininity to domesticate a new financial mindset—for women and men alike. In 1997, the Minister of Education in Zambia then, Dr. S. Siyamujaye announced that schoolgirls who become pregnant would no longer be expelled. The girls who had been expelled in that year were allowed to return to school. The directive showed serious commitment towards the education of girls. Hence, the Re-Entry Policy mandates schools to allow girls who fall pregnant or left school due to early marriages back into school system (MOE,1997). // Further, in the pursuit to educate girls, the Government of the Republic of Zambia is working with cooperating partners to eradicate the vices and bor

Catastrophic news of floods, wildfires, record temperatures and rising sea levels highlight the urgent need to support and fund sustainable business practices. However, despite high profile climate action initiatives (e.g., those from COP 28), allocating capital towards positive environment, social and governance (ESG) practices still represent less than a third of global funds under management. Among the barriers to making the necessary shift towards environmental and social progress, is a lack of trust in investment professionals and products. In the aftermath of Japanese occupation and the Korean war, South Korea built a schooling system that today is consistently ranked among the top five countries worldwide for reading and mathematics, and in the top ten for science in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) (OECD, 2014). Its consistent high ranking against wealthier countries, as well as the role of education in transforming Korea’s economy while retaining a relatively low (4.3 percent) level of spending as a portion of GDP (World Bank, 2022), has cemented its reputation among low- and middle-income countries a

Ecosystem restoration is crucial for reversing land degradation, with the global community aiming to restore 1 billion hectares by 2030. The People’s Republic of China, combating severe land degradation, has prioritized ecological restoration, achieving the United Nations’ land degradation neutrality target in 2020. This study examines the viability of investing in ecosystem restoration in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, focusing on projects at Ma’anshan Farm and Zhihui Farm, revitalized through the Asian Development Bank-supported initiatives. Tax administrations in Africa and, more broadly, low-income countries (LICs), are increasingly investing in advanced digital technologies, in an effort to build more effective, rules-based and efficient tax systems. Those efforts fit within broader government efforts towards e-government and the establishment of digital public infrastructures (DPI). 1 While these efforts to digitalise tax administration are multi faceted, affecting all aspects of administration, recent years have seen growing attention to the potential impacts of digital ID systems (DIS) and digital merchant payments (DMP), bo

Structured financing solutions encompass a range of investment approaches that provide liquidity to investors without the need for a traditional equity exit event, such as a strategic sale, sale to another financial investor, or public market listing. Structuring mechanisms across the debt-to-equity spectrum determine the exit terms of the deal, therefore providing considerable downside protection to investors. Structured financing solutions are an incipient but increasingly important set of tools for investors active in Latin America to address the financing gap for companies that lack access

Corporate income tax (CIT) compliance is a critical aspect of maintaining a fair and robust tax system. It ensures that businesses fulfil their legal tax obligations and contribute their fair share to public finances. However, achieving high compliance rates is often challenging due to various factors including, among others, the complexity of the tax system, economic factors (income levels, audit probabilities, liquidity constraints, tax benefits etc.) and businesses’ perceptions about the tax system and government.
