Ismail, Ahmad Khalil. "European banking mergers : stock market and operating performance evaluation." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4379/.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a new wave of merger and acquisitions (M&A) activity since the early 1990's across the world, much of this occurring in the financial services industry. This trend has affected Europe as well where the landscape of the financial services industry has been changing. This M&A activity in general has stimulated more in depth research to assess the consequences of the merger events, although comparatively little work has been done on M&A activity in the European financial services industry. This thesis uses a market return approach and an operating performance approach to evaluate the M&As outcome in European banking. We document a minimal total return, and a smaller target return in comparison to US studies. The post-merger operating cash flow return on assets deteriorated but we also found a very minimal improvement in efficiency which was not supportive enough to boost the cash flow return on assets and the profitability of the merging partners, although these mergers were mainly motivated by synergy. Deeper research may provide more interesting findings using clinical studies that seek as much detailed information about the merging partners as possible. It is also worth examining the pattern of managerial ownership and how it affects the merger outcome as this factor is an important one for regulators in the financial services Industry.

Mulkiaman, Mohammed Zakkariya. "Impact of monetary policy and macroeconomic environment on Islamic banking operations in a dual banking system of Malaysia." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11640/.

Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of Islamic banking and finance since 1984 had contributed to the financial development leading to economic growth in Malaysia. Since Islamic banks operates within the dual banking system in Malaysia, it is inevitable that Islamic banking operations have interacted with the monetary policies and outcomes of the existing (conventional) system and as a result interact with interest rate related developments as well. In addition, macroeconomic interaction in the sense of Islamic banking contributing to economic growth will be higher if Islamic banks grow and increase their market share in the industry perhaps through applying legitimate Islamic compliance products and valid contracts. This research, hence, aims to assess the impact of monetary policy as well as macroeconomic outcomes on Islamic banking operations and vice versa in the case of Malaysia in particular in the post-1990 period. In doing so, each research question is examined and answered in three separate yet connected empirical papers. Each econometric analysis is based on two steps Engle-Granger tests with different timelines and sampling due to availability of the data. The main tests conducted was two steps Engle-Granger approach which involved Ordinary Least Square estimation, Residual testing, and Cointegration test. Vector Error Correction Model and Granger Casusality were also employed for further investigation of the long and short-run relationship between variables. The finding indicates that the Islamic banks do have long run dynamic relationship with economic growth. However, the conventional banks are the dominion due to small market share of the Islamic banks which is less than 30 per cent. With regards to the interest rate interaction, both conventional and Islamic interbank money market rates moving closely in the long run statistically indicates that Islamic inter-bank money market is co-integrated in long-run because both conventional and Islamic banks are subjected to the same monetary policy. While saving interest rates of the conventional banks and profit rates of the Islamic banks are not associated but moving parallel need to adjust their return rates in the long short and long run either slightly higher or lower to remain competitive in the market. The findings on the relationship between Islamic banks saving profit rates spread show that they are affected by financial factors such as inflation rate and real interest rate. This indicates that Islamic banks are exposed to the interest rates risk, as they operate under the dual banking system and reign by the same monetary policies. The results indicate that there is a close and inevitable interaction between Islamic banking operations and monetary policy outcomes. In particular close operational relationship between Islamic banking profit rates and interest rates should be considered as a source of worry in the face of the religious positioning of the prohibition of interest rate. The outcome reflects that prohibition of riba is only considered as the form nature of Islamic law (Shari’ah), while the operations of Islamic banks are vulnerable to interest rates risk in everyday life. However, in dual banking system such interactions will be inevitable.

Ochuko, Rita Erhovwo. "E-banking operational risk assessment : a soft computing approach in the context of the Nigerian banking industry." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/5733.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates E-banking Operational Risk Assessment (ORA) to enable the development of a new ORA framework and methodology. The general view is that E-banking systems have modified some of the traditional banking risks, particularly Operational Risk (OR) as suggested by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in 2003. In addition, recent E-banking financial losses together with risk management principles and standards raise the need for an effective ORA methodology and framework in the context of E-banking. Moreover, evaluation tools and / or methods for ORA are highly subjective, are still in their infant stages, and have not yet reached a consensus. Therefore, it is essential to develop valid and reliable methods for effective ORA and evaluations. The main contribution of this thesis is to apply Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Tree Augmented Naïve Bayes (TAN) classifier as standard tools for identifying OR, and measuring OR exposure level. In addition, a new ORA methodology is proposed which consists of four major steps: a risk model, assessment approach, analysis approach and a risk assessment process. Further, a new ORA framework and measurement metrics are proposed with six factors: frequency of triggering event, effectiveness of avoidance barriers, frequency of undesirable operational state, effectiveness of recovery barriers before the risk outcome, approximate cost for Undesirable Operational State (UOS) occurrence, and severity of the risk outcome. The study results were reported based on surveys conducted with Nigerian senior banking officers and banking customers. The study revealed that the framework and assessment tools gave good predictions for risk learning and inference in such systems. Thus, results obtained can be considered promising and useful for both E-banking system adopters and future researchers in this area.

Abstract:
Due to the constant growth of fraud in relation to customers of card – holding banks, the dissertation examined the types of fraud and systematized them according to the channel of interaction with the client. At the same time, the tools used by commercial banks and the Bank of Russia to reduce the risk of unauthorized (fraudulent) transactions on bank cards and remote banking systems were considered, and the most effective tool was identified – monitoring of transactions. Recommendations were also developed for risk management in the implementation of bank card transactions and remote banking systems.

Shawa, Hani Hashem. "Project related finance for construction contractors operating in the United Arab Emirates." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6984.

Full text
Abstract:
Demand for construction Project Finance has developed in recent years as construction projects have become more elaborate requiring more expensive and specialised technologies for their execution. Contractors' involvement with banks when operating in the United Arab Emirates usually starts at the bidding stage with the issue of bid bonds. This develops into larger commitments following their request' for performance bonds and finance facilities when they are awarded the contracts. The aim of this researchi s to investigate lending banks' assessmentso f contractors operating in the UAE, and the latter's financial requirements in order to execute various construction projects. It further aims to reconcile the needs of the construction contractor to those of the lending banks and arrive at an acceptable level of risk sharing and reward. A method of research has been adopted which includes a literature review, interviews with selected bankers and contractors, the development of case studies, and a field survey by means of questionnaires sent to both borrowers and lenders. Data relating to twenty-eight construction projects that used Project Related Finance for their execution was analysed to see if there was common ground for adoption of Project Related Finance strategy. The questionnaire survey also revealed that while bankers extend both Corporate Finance to construction companies as general limits, and Project Related Finance as limits specific to the project concerned, 73 per cent of contractors that participated in the survey used the latter. The issue of risk management in contracting and the acceptability of risk by contractors as compared to that by bankers are discussed in detail ... (continued).

Abstract:
Our interest in this thesis is first to combine the different measurement techniques for operational risk in financial companies, and we highlight more and more the consequences of estimation risk which is treated as a particular part of operational risk. In the first part, we will present a full overview of operational risk, from the regulatory laws and regulations to the associated mathematical and actuarial concepts as well as a numerical application regarding the Advanced Measurement Approach, like Loss Distribution to calculate the capital requirement, then applying the Extreme Value Theory. We conclude this first part by setting a scaling technique based on (OLS) enabling us to normalize our external data to a local Lebanese Bank. On the second part, we feature estimation risk by first measuring the error induced on the SCR by the estimation error of the parameters, to having an alternative yield curve estimation and finishing by calling attention to the reflections on assumptions of the calculation instead of focusing on the so called hypothesis "consistent with market values", would be more appropriate and effective than to complicate models and generate additional errors and instability. Chapters in this part illustrate the estimation risk in its different aspects which is a part of operational risk, highlighting as so the attention that should be given in treating our models

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the financial careers of Lionel and Barron Jacobs in Tucson, Arizona, from 1867 to 1913. As early merchants, the Jacobs brothers discovered that cash and credit were scarce in the region, and in 1870 opened a money exchange and lending business. Then in 1879, the Jacobs brothers opened the Pima County Bank to serve the increased economic activity caused by the Tombstone silver discoveries. Mastering the details of banking, they developed management skills and insights. They organized and operated the First National Bank of Tucson (1882-1885), the Bank of Tucson (1885-1887), the Consolidated Bank of Tucson (1887-1890), and the Arizona National Bank (1890-1913). At retirement the Jacobs brothers were among the preeminent financiers of Arizona. A study of their banking experience provides a valuable perspective on the economic growth of southern Arizona during the late nineteenth century and mirrors the problems that bankers faced on remote frontiers.

This project uses data envelopment analysis to study the advantage and disadvantage between the efficiency Taiwan’s banking industry, and through the efficient reference set and slack variable analysis support an useful improvement to the authority. The conclusion of this project are:The main reason of a low bank overall efficiency is the managers of bank fails in making decisions and doing things efficiency. A lot of banks cause resource waste in unsuitable scale. The low efficiency of banks inside the financial holding company’s reason is the pure technology non-efficientcy. And the low efficiency of banks outside the financial holding company is almost causes by scale non-efficiency. From this we can gain a conclusion, the low efficiency of banks inside the financial holding company can be improved from the manage side by finding a most suitable cost allocation. And the low efficiency of banks outside the financial holding company can be reflected by the sliding of the business scale. Finally, this project used slack variable analysis it can gain the main reason that bank produced low efficiency. Using too much cost, deposit money, insufficient investment, and other over-less coming. That means the bank have the appearance of consuming resource, too much money is leaved unused, and over-conservative investment. Comparatively, that cuts other coming money.

By reviewing relevant literatures and interviewing professionals in banking industry, the research is mainly to analysis and design the presentation of performance information in banking industry. The thesis can be categorized into three main parts: 1.Profit-oriented performance analysis 2.Position-oriented performance analysis 3.An analysis of peer-group competition Based on the results of this research, the following conclusions are reached: 1.The performance of banks can be clearly presented by multi-step income statement and business income statement. The concept of profit center can apply to branches, businesses, products and customers. Major-customer-management is the specific system in banking industry. Some concepts of management accounting such as profit differential analysis and breakeven point analysis can also apply to banking industry. Cost-profit analysis for intangible products will help high-level managers in decision making. 2.Position analysis-The disclosure of off-balance sheet items should draw more attention. Banking is a funds-transfer industry, so analyses of funds sources & uses and reserves status are necessary. Since bank is an interest-sensitive business, interest spread would influence performance of banks a lot. Therefore, the interest-sensitivity analysis is critical. Besides, with the effective management of liquidity risk and credit risk, banks will operate more stably and avoid the risk of bankruptcy. 3.Some indicators about capital adequacy, assets quality, management quality, earning, liquidity and growth can be used to analyze the competitive power of banks. Financial and non-financial ratios of finance, customers, internal procedures, learning & growth and risk management in balanced scorecard will help in internal management, and increase competitive ability. After being decomposed and reassembled, operational indicators can be used to differentiate the performance of banks.

This research aims to construct the operation mode of domestic private banking operation. It first explores the understanding of private banking operation and operating status by ten representative bankers in China through collection of extensive literatures and investigation of industrial reports; and then it introduces relevant literature and public information at home and abroad and makes detailed arrangement and generalization of actual private banking operation implemented in the global banking industry, in order to construct the optimum operation mode of domestic private banks. Lastly, the suggestions on management strategy of the bankers and advices on the direction of relevant industrial policies implemented by the government are provided based on the banking management trend—innovative thinking presented by the European scholars. Based on definition of research scope and research object, this research adopted the quantitative research method, as well as extensive and in-depth literature review and the investigation methods including collection, arrangement and generalization of information, and utilized systematical analysis and scientific thinking to accomplish the research goals. Due to particularity of the research problem, the private banking operation in China emerged later in recent years, as compared with the development of foreign private banking operation, and there is much worth learning and more space for development in operation concept of the bankers, financing knowledge. At the same time, the research is also intended to construct conceptual graph of operation mode consistent with actual practices based on the known theoretical basis, through such methods as analysis of developing and evolving process of domestic financial environment, extensive and profound literature review of Chinese and foreign researchers, relevant industrial reports and dynamic investigation of the bankers. The research results indicated that due to limitation of financial environment and domestic laws, the domestic private banking operation obviously falls behind foreign equivalent in operational generalization and operation mode, and suffers from slight shortage in technical support, employee quality, software and hardware and experiences. When facing financial reform, more foreign banks bring and actively arrange large financial resources and diversified financial services in Taiwan or even Asian market, which brings about notable impact upon the foreign financial environment. Therefore, the government and bankers should make more efforts to actively improve the competitiveness of China’s banking industry and stride towards the global financial market.

Abstract Globalization and joint of WTO have made Taiwan government to speed up the opening of banking services. The banks in Taiwan are forced to modify their business models in order to increase their competitiveness, especially after the Financial Holding Company Law announcing. All dimension business models for banking industry has handicap for the needs of specific field. Hence, banks have to focus more on the market position and segmentation. Targeting and development of the regional central branch system is an innovation of business model for integrating the current operating system of local branch and organization. The central branch system is able to gather up resources and produce the effect of specialization Many banks have put central branch system into practice and have received significant achievements, although some banks hang back. Therefore, our study tries to analyze the performance of the central branch system by the seven dimensions business model, and proposes the operating strategies. From the reviews of literature we build up the business model theory, which guide our interviews to the five selected banks. We reach the following conclusion. 1. Route types and backup system play the key roles for operation of the regional central branch system. 2. Operating process has the secondary importance in our seven dimensions business model. 3. Technical innovation, surprisingly, is not important. 4. The viewpoints of the seven dimensions business model for senior and middle managers are slightly different for any single interviewed banks. However, for the comparison of these five banks, the viewpoints for all these senior and middle managers are very consistent. 5. Banks under financial holding company or not do not have different viewpoint. However, banks under financial holding company emphasize more on standardized and profound overall services. Banks not under financial holding company pay more attention on the depth and extent of their products. Keywords: consumer banking, the regional center of consumer banking, financial holding company, business model, competitive strategy.

Various operational risk maybe cause on account of different business operations in a Financial Institution, no attention has been drawn to the risk management of banking operation, due to that there is no prior proper specification and prevention for risk control until the serious losses have been occurred. This study is base on the structure of Basel II operation risk as well as using five case studies of serious operational failure events towards Mega International Commercial Bank, Agricultural Bank of China, First Commercial Bank, Bank SinoPAC and Far East International Bank. Meanwhile, this study attempts to use Basel II to classify the patterns for the loss of operational risk and concludes the following three patterns, such as, 1.External Fraud 2.Customer, production and business conduct 3.Management of execution, delivery and workflow. According to these case studies, eight suggestions are summarized as below, I.Cross-border branches must be familiar with the local supervision culture. II.Pay attention to internal control for the three lines of defense in banks. III.Implementation of legal compliance function. IV.Strengthen the management of Family Corporation. After the end of 1992, the European Community (EC) will follow it''s goal to creat a single banking market, within which the banking market in every Member State will be in- tegrated into a big area market, and there will be a common regulatory framework for EC banks'' cross-border financial activity throughout the EC. Therefore, the aim of this the- sis is to analyze the EC banking system, discuss it''s pos- sible impact on the EC banking market and try to suggest certain approach for banks to get the advantages in the EC new regulatory regime. But the present research is mainly focused on the legal context of the banking issues, not on it''s economic theory and it''s relevant consequences. The main methodology adopted by this thesis is confined to the literature survey and the materials used as the sources of this thesis are mostly based upon the Rome Treaty, the judgements of the European Court of Justice, the EC offical publications in the banking field. The re- search comes to the conclusion that every EC bank could freely set up a branch and provide cross-border financial serveces in any Member States. For the new regulatorty regime, the border of Member States'' market will be lifted, the operation of EC banks could be enlarged, and each com- petent authority has to be given more responsibilities for supervising banking operation. For the deregulation of EC banking law, the banks in EC will suffer more competitive pressure, they need to keep their original market and examine the impact of these areas on their business. Since the liberalization and interna- tionalization on banking business in Taiwan has been pro- nounced, we cannot neglect the importance of EC banking market and have to keep watching it''s development as a re- ference source for the banks in Taiwan.

Based on the rapid development of various industries, China is already the largest market in the world. In the development of the country, the banking industry is one of the core industries in the state. It is related to the flow of capital and capital in a country’s economic development and most closely linked with the enterprises and the people. This study collected 55 Chinese banks data from Taiwan Economic Journal in the period of 2011-2016, and divided them into three categories, State-owned Commercial Bank, National non-state-owned Bank, and City Commercial Bank. This research uses the Data Envelopment Analysis and Malmquist to analyze the operation performance of China’s banking industry and selects deposit from customers, interest expense and commission expense as inputs variables and operating profit, interest income and commission income as outputs variables from TEJ database. The average efficiency of the overall banking industry in China from 2011 to 2016 was 0.941, which can be said to be efficient. However, according to the Malmquist index and Return to scale analysis, the entire Chinese banking industry has experienced a decline situation. It might be some problems in the internal operations management and technical management. It is necessary to develop new financial technology and products as well as explore new market in order to strive for a survival niche market. The significant different size of scale in the three categories has deeply affected the banking operation efficiency and financial technology. It indicates that the large bank has better resource to attract distinguished human resource and could invest in advanced technologies.

In this thesis, an investigation of the competition situation and an analysis about domestic banking is proposed, using the theory of structure-conduct-performance and the markup test (Bresnahan & Lau, 1982), to build a nonlinear simultaneous formula. Data collected in this research ranges from 1975 to 1999, including most domestic banks in Taiwan. Observing the market sharing of the top-8 banks, in accordance with their assets, depositing and loaning affairs, the following concentration indices are drawn: 1. Before 1990, the deposit/loan affairs were high-concentrated tight-oligopoly. The assets affairs were high-montrated. 2. During 1990 to 1995, the assets, depositing and loaning affairs became high-montrated loose-oligopoly. 3. After 1995, the assets and loaning affairs became low-montrated loose-oligopoly. But the depositing affairs were still high-montrated loose-oligopoly. From the results drawn from the mathematical model, two important indices are discussed as follows: 1. The monopoly indexλis not significantly different from 0. This indicates that the domestic banks cannot monopolize the market. The market style is efficiency-competitive. 2. The dummy variable D is not significantly different from 0. This indicates that the market situation does not change after the emergence of new banks. Based on the observation and analysis results, the thesis proposes the future direction of bank management: 1) management concepts should be adjusted, 2) management structure should be reviewed, 3) the organization should be reengineered, 4) the strategy should be strengthened, 5) risk management should be strengthened and 6) pay more attention to the human resource.

Banking Operational risk management with internal control and management under actual operation environment is a challenging and not succeed easily. Because risk is everywhere, risk is established and confirmed by demand. There is no risk would be no compensation. In the process of banking business management, operations risk was very easily produced the phenomenon with the result. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the operation efficiency and to investigate the relationships between the efficiency and market share in Taiwan banking industry. The empirical analyses are carried out using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Tobit regression on 42 domestic banks over the period of 2002 to 2006. The empirical evidence indicates as follows: 1) In 2006, the overall operation efficiency scores of ten banks are near to 1, and among them 7 are financial holding companies, indicating that the increament of overall operation efficiency in financial holding companies is better than that in traditional commercial banks; 2) The average efficiency over the period of 2002-2006 exhibits that the overbanking in Taiwan banking industry had resulted in the narrow interest spread between deposits and loans and then caused the lower profit, as indicated by the less than 1 efficiency scores for most banks. In this regard, banks have to be devoted to enhance their technology and scope of scale to gain the operation efficiency; 3) There is a negative relationship between efficiency and market share on total loans, but the interest spread is otherwise decreasing. Hence, this study suggests that Financial Holding Companies should integrate their overall operation capability, increase the market shares on fee revenues, and enhance the quality of loans control in order to upgrade their overall operation efficiency.

Banking is a strategic industry of a nation. The role of the banks are not only to serve as an intermediary among the financial effectiveness of businesses and the public, it also promotes economic development of the country. The health of the banking system directly affects the country’s national security and the wealth of the society. In 1990s the Taiwanese government started to deregulate the financial industry in the promotion of open market by opening establishment for private banks and privatizing the public banks. However, during the time, the competition in the industry intensified as the number of banks grew dramatically, resulted in a reduction of the industry’s average net interest margin to drop below the international average level. During 2000s, the government implemented two financial reforms to improve the health of the country’s financial system. Although these actions reduced the overall banks’ loan loss level and increased the capital adequacy, the margin issue remained to be resolved. In addition, among those previously privatized public banks, many of them are still highly influenced by the government, which owns a significant amount of shares of the banks. The performance of these banks is subordinate compare to private banks on operation efficiency, profitability, and management effectiveness. In 2014, the regulator declared another financial reform targeted to transform one to two Taiwanese banks to become an Asian regional bank within 3 to 5 years. The government will try to promote M&;A among banks by first merging the state-owned banks, to further improve the health of the financial industry and increase the industry’s competency. The action plan was established mainly based on Singapore’s previous success on DBS due to the similar economic environment and financial industry development between the counties. DBS is currently one of the largest banks in Asia and a subsidiary of Temasek Holdings, which is owned by the Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund. This research plans to analyze the success of DBS and Singapore’s economy environment and financial industry development in order to provide suggestions to government’s banking system reform. Based on the analysis, there are six suggestions outlined as below: 1.Establish a sovereign wealth fund to govern the public sector of the nation, and improve the effectiveness of resources. 2.Further deregulate the financial industry and promote open market. 3.Deregulate the corporate governance on public banks to increase operation efficiency. 4.Increase public bank branding awareness and globalization. 5.Adjust public banks’ revenue source on increasing non-traditional lending and oversea earnings. 6.Establish an international recruitment standard to attract top talents.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TWSE) announced that specified listed companies would start mandatory corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting annually from 2014. Accordingly, this study organized CSR reports issued by listed and over-the-counter companies to determine whether these companies fulfilled their CSR, the extent to which they disclosed such information, and whether banking companies fulfilling their CSR had a positive effect on their business performance. Statistical data compiled in 2017 show that most companies issued CSR reports only to comply with regulations, and that has half of the CSR reports were not certified by a third party. The focus of the banking industry’s CSR reports varies with social trends and events each year and generally includes basic corporate governance overview and integrity management with gradual incorporation of employee training, information security, and law compliance. Green finance and environmental protection remain topics that are rarely addressed. This study divided the companies into different groups on the basis of whether they signed the Equator Principles and whether they voluntarily prepared CSR reports. Subsequently, the financial performance, corporate governance, and company–employee relationships of these company groups were analyzed. The results showed that banks that were more involved in CSR showed superior business performance.

Our study investigates the impact of risk on derivatives operation in Taiwan banking industry. The risks are categorized into three types ,systematic risk (beta)、non-systematic risk (profit volatility、revenue volatility) and operation risk (capital adequacy ratio、interest-rate sensitivity gap、credit concentration ratio). The results showed that systemic risk have negatively significant relationship with derivative contracts of trading purposes. And systemic risk also have negatively significant relationship with derivative contracts of non-trading purposes, except foreign exchange related derivative contracts of non-trading proposes. But non-systematic risk (revenue volatility) bears no significant relations with derivative contracts of both trading and non-trading purposes. The operational risk (capital adequacy ratio 、interest-rate sensitive gap、credit concentration ratio) have positively significant relationship with derivative contracts of both trading and non-trading purposes, except capital adequacy ratio bears no significant relations with derivative contracts of non-trading purposes.

Abstract To promote the efficiency of banking industry and heighten the position of international finance in Taiwan, the government established the Offshore Banking Units (OBU) in 1983 in order to upgrade the financial services. Using Duration Model, this study separated the 69 OBU in Taiwan into three groups (that is, overall OBU, domestic OBU, and foreign OBU) to investigate what factors may influence banks’ decision to join the OBU markets during 1983 to 1999. Using the Panel Data of fixed and random effects models, this study compared the performance of overall, domestic, and foreign OBU between 1995 and 1999. To investigate the factors that influenced the spell length of banks entering into the OBU market, the results show that Weibull distribution was the fittest probability distribution in the Duration Model for overall, domestic, and foreign OBU. We found that only the government rule had a positive impact on the spell length of banks, which influenced these three OBU groups. This suggested that the financial liberalization and internationalization policies in Taiwan benefited to the banks that entered to the OBU market. Obviously, the other independent variables including total assets, debit to equity, cash and savings in other banks to total assets, operation revenue, and the growth rate of total assets, have influenced to the domestic OBU. The results show that the greater total assets, the higher the ratio of cash and savings in other banks, and the larger of the operation revenue, the shorter of the spell length of the banks to set up OBU. In addition, the higher of the debit to equity ratio, the greater growth rate of the OBU, the longer of the spell length of the banks to set up OBU. To compare the OBU performance in Taiwan, this study used ROA and ROE as dependent variables, and separated the independent variable into five indexes, including capital adequacy, efficiency, liquidity, profitability, and growth. From the perspective of the capital adequacy indexes, we found that the ratio of equity to total assets have a positive impact on ROA for overall and foreign OBU, but have a negative influence to ROE for overall and domestic OBU. It indicates that foreign OBU may enhance the capital structure by increasing equity to total assets ratio. However, domestic OBU decreased the ratio of equity to total assets to reduce the risky assets and leaded to a lower profitability. In the efficiency indexes, the profitability of lending ratio shows a negative impact on the ROA for overall, domestic, and foreign OBU, but have a positive influence to ROE for domestic OBU. These results implied that the Asia financial crisis might cause a lower profitability of lending ratios. In the liquidity indexes, we found that the cash and savings in other banks to total assets ratio has a positive influence to ROA for overall and domestic OBU, but has a negative impact on ROE for overall and domestic OBU. To improve ROA, it seems that OBU increase the weights of the liquidity assets to meet the shortage of saving and lending. On the contrast, because of the less benefit of the liquidity indexes, the OBU may reduce liquidity assets as operation cost. Thus, we found that liquidity assets have a negative impact on ROE.

Abstract:
abstract: In this thesis I examine the opportunities and challenges faced by the community banks in China. Rooted in the local communities, community banks generally focus on serving the local residents, farmers, and micro and small business enterprises (MSBE) through relationship building. Although community banks tend to be small relative to the other financial institutions, their unique market positions and business strategies have helped them to survive the competition and secure some market shares. Thus, it is important to understand the business strategies of community banks and to explore their future business opportunities and challenges. I first provide a brief overview about the importance of local communities, community economy, and community banking, on the basis of an analysis about mismatch in the demand and supply of community financial services due to information asymmetry. Next, I review and analyze how commercial banks have utilized different types of information in their operations. I classify the information used by commercial banks into different categories and discuss their importance to the operations of commercial banks. After that, I conduct a case analysis to illustrate the role of non-financial information in the development of community banks’ business strategy. I conclude this thesis with a discussion of how community banks can better utilize data analysis to develop their core competencies in the era of “Big Data”.

In the rapid economic development, bonds generally take some places of the currency payment and become one of the essential methods of transaction in the present economic society. But the theory and the stipulations of Negotiable Instruments Law do not conform to the act of actual operations in banking industry. The adjudications of court usually have varies questionable aspects, due to this – it grows the disputes about “the problems of bonds” and “the suspicious bonds” and these are always over rely on the explain letter of regulations by the controlling organizations and be criticized this affair as “the practice management theory”. You cannot deny the fact that the Negotiable Instruments Law is neglected for long time by the Law World. The reason is obviously the few proportion of examination in judiciary for the Negotiable Instruments Law, therefore it been left aside without further discussions. Lately cause for the lawsuit of “Instrument Finance” reached as high as 500 cases during recent years. The main problem is the bank double roles in “the settlement of the exchange” and bonds bearer that occur the different legal relationship simultaneously display on the same bonds and the same party as well. This creates indirectly complication of this legal related matter. In order to avoid “Instrument Finance” disputing happens again and again and to avoid the waste of judicial resources, this article researches the answer for it by Instruments Finance affairs, the meaning of practical operations of Negotiable Instruments Law and take the adjudicates which made by all different level of courts as the centre to analysis and generalize it, pay proper attentions on both theory and practice. And another cause of the domestic literature about – practice issue, lake of complete researches and discussions.
