Bankside trees and shrubs are an important element in landscape enhancement. Within stream regulation, we should try to propose necessary interventions to the river profile and its closest surroundings with maximum respect for existing vegetation. Having carried out technical adjustments, it is necessary to propose, in liaison with competent specialists, and to provide for the implementation of new planting, or reconstruction of riparian and accompanying stands. The planting of, and the consequential care for, bankside trees and shrubs should not be underestimated as unplanted areas within nat

The redevelopment of the Bankside area in central London was proposed in 1943, yet substantive regeneration was only achieved toward the end of the century. This article analyzes the processes whereby a postwar industrial, then deindustrial, locality evolved into a popular leisure and residential quarter. It argues that strategic plans for the area engendered only incremental and piecemeal redevelopment. Change was principally driven by industrial decline, government building policies, and the availability of finance, and, since the 1990s, by private-sector investment and culture-driven regene

ABSTRACT:In the mid-1940s a conflict arose – the battle for Bankside – between two plans for a contested space on London's South Bank. The electricity industry planned to rebuild Bankside power station to alleviate a critical shortage of electricity, whereas the County of London Plan envisaged redevelopment of the area as public gardens, flats and offices. This article examines these plans and their entanglement in the planning system as then constituted; it argues that the significance of the planning principles escalated the arguments from a local issue to the highest level of government. ABSTRACT: Riparian shade within the small stream network (SSN) plays a key role in regulating light and water temperature, which mitigates catchment stressors such as nutrient enrichment. Small streams, with their narrow channels and high surface area-to-volume ratio, can be effectively shaded by bankside vegetation, influencing instream processes. Achieving adequate shading using appropriate bankside species may therefore present as an advantageous method to mitigate negative impacts of agriculture land use—the major pressure within SSN—on instream ecology, while providing other co-benefits f

Electricity has been a feature of the British urban landscape since the 1890s. Yet there are few accounts of urban electricity undertakings or their generating stations. This paper discusses culture jamming as the countercultural tool of our current mass media society and argues for a more holistic understanding of the concept in order to open up its subversive potential. Part of this holisitic approach involves emphasizing the role of remediation inherent in the concept. Thus, the aim of this paper is twofold: to elaborate the diverse techniques involved in culture jamming (as opposed to the common reductionist approaches to the concept) and, more importantly, to highlight the remediation elements imbedded in culture jamming practices.
