Full textThe process of industrialisation started in Greece in the late 19th century, seemes to acquire a new impetus in the 20th cent. , especially during the interwar period. Industrial establishments doubles and some investment occurred. The banks, led by the national bank of Greece, were called to organise the country's financial ressources and facilitate the process. Their success however was limited. Their action remained within the traditional logic of banking that emphasised security of investment and low risks. It did not transcend the constraints placed by greece's position in the international division of labour or by the internal structure, accentuated by the refugee influx in the 1920's. Thus, until the end of that decade, agriculture came top in the priorities completing the state's policy of achieving national homogeneity and of integrating as soon as possible the new refugee populations. Genuine interest for industry was shown by the banks only in the 1930's. This occurred in the wake of the reorganisation of the Greek banking sector and the effects of the economic depression that held foreign capital out of Greece. Nevertheless, the chances of industry to grow and modernise were already seriously and adversely affected by the changes occurring on an international scale

Full textThe French Alzheimer database (BNA) is part of the third French plan against Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. The objective of this database is to collect activity data of all French memory centers in order to help health authorities to organize the care offer and to generate epidemiologic knowledge on dementia. Administrative database have advantages and drawback in terms of medical research. It can gather data related to a large population, reflects the “real life” of patients and medical practices and allows longitudinal follow-up. On this other side some specific problems exists among them validity is a real concern. The objective of this work was to assess the BNA as an epidemiologic tool. We performed quality analyses and external validity studies in this perspective and initiated a research on posterior cortical atrophy to illustrate the potential of the database for the study of rare conditions. Our work shows that quality can be increased by the setup of a more structured quality program. The BNA is currently able to reproduce known published results and is sensitive to the environment. In this work we give some recommendations to increase the value of the BNA for epidemiological research

Full textThe International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in appearance created to try to prosecute perpetrators of violations of international humanitarian law which were committed in Rwanda in 1994. The preamble of Resolution 955 of the Security Council United Nations, which is the source of that court, said that this main organ of the United Nations was convinced that the advent of international criminal justice for Rwanda would contribute to peace and national reconciliation. Fifteen years after its creation, the exercise of the judicial function, by protecting the accused in terms of fair trial, and the establishment of their international criminal responsibility, does not therefore allow these political objectives. The main reason lies in the fact that the architecture of international criminal trials takes part not much in the achievement of such a political design policy. Includes through the function of the penalty, which applies only to the retributive function and not rehabilitative, and the absence of the victim as a partner in a plan that was first created for her, and this, on behalf of human rights. In addition, the progressist approach, although present in the interpretation of rules, influenced moreover by political considerations (diplomatic) did not allow this Court to express itself as a real court, including through the protective function of the defendants. It shows well the challenges faced by the international criminal court to extricate formalism law enforcement due to its international character, without the risk of distorting the judicial nature, and therefore repressive

Full textNowadays, in order to survive, to prosper and to be competitive, french natinal industries are obliged to engage them selves in commercial and financial transactions abroad. However, these transactions which are often conducted in foreign currencies requise the setting-up of a management structure to protect them against exchange risks. An efficient management of exchange risks depends in fact on the mastering of the prevision of exchange rates evolution. The study we carried out on ten big french banks revealed that, as a result of lack of necessary means and competent staff, the majority of firms rely on bank conselling services for currency management. However, the company treasurer must be able to define his own exchange strategy. At present, the best trade policy which seeks to contain exchange risks is that which chooses the ECU as invoicemoney. The ECU being the most stable currency, has the qualities of the currency of last ressort

Full textCulture is often seen as a group phenomenon, which influences individuals in it. The individual’s perception, values and thoughts are often influenced by the cultural context in which they are living in. The values represent certain type of system, which influences how we generate and receive certain information, motivates our actions and behavioral pattern, and differentiate us from the members of other value systems. This study investigates the effect of national culture on the employee’s perception in Serbian banks, towards the service quality. The study includes a literature review about culture in general, national culture and cultural dimensions, organizational culture, service quality, exploring gaps in the literature which calls for further research. In addressing one of the gaps, a research model has been developed, which illustrated the possible relationship between the national culture dimensions and bank’s service quality dimensions. The model has been utilized as framework and guided us during the empirical research. The empirical research was conducted in eight banks in Serbia. The main findings suggest that there is significant influence of national culture on bank’s service quality. Secondly, study found that banks per se have influence on employee’s perception regarding bank’s service quality

Full textAn historical introduction outlining the relationship between the arts and business---from the Renaissance in Europe to its place of greatest expansion in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; in the U.S.A. as well as in Canada---begins the discussion. An attempt is made to position the activities of modern corporate art collecting between two poles---that of the individual collector and that of the institutional art museum.
Motives for collecting include, among many, the search for distinction and the desire to create a perception in the community of humanitarian standards guiding the corporation. The ways in which corporate motives contribute to the creation of a positive external corporate art identity, and thus a productive business environment, are examined and developed, as are the principal objections of their chief public detractor, artist-writer Hans Haacke.
In three of the four corporations studied, original research on the behavioural and emotional reactions of employees to the corporate art surrounding them has allowed an in-depth analysis of the internal effects of art on employees. Foremost among these are feelings of pride, well-being and the enhancement of self-identity.
Finally, a brief discussion of the role of mediators is offered, in particular that of the corporate curator in the modern art world.

Full textThe political dimension of the relation of assistance: which possible reappropriation? The implementation of a project on a territory modifies the existing relations of domination and power, giving place to attempts of reciprocity and appropriation. This thesis deals with interactions and articulation between local societies and development programs. If these programs are factors of social change and identity recombining, they also cause reactions, adaptations and phenomena of appropriation, even of rejection. The case study relates to the Programme of National solidarity (NSP) in several rural districts of Afghanistan between 2004 and 2008. Development policies promote new paradigms such as women participation, democracy, good governance, accountability, etc. A voluntarist development policy, aiming at democratizing the Afghan society, can lead to contradictory outcomes. The complex set of representations, perceptions, strategies, symbolic dimensions and human relations taking place in this kind of project, clearly underlines the need to reassess current "development" policies implemented in Afghanistan and to take account of the social stakes into these policies. Gift theories highlight the power stakes existing in any human relation, the importance of symbolic debts circulation, which contributes to the construction of social relations. Individuals and groups get continually the positions of donors and receivers. Dignity depends partIy on space left to make reciprocity possible

Full textAfter three decades of the armed conflicts, Cambodia finally has the capacity to accelerate her economic growth and integration into the region and the world. The country must rebuild a sound financial system and put in place an effective monetary policy. We propose to conduct a study on the efficacy of monetary policy of NBC (Central Bank of Cambodia) while taking into account of the underdevelopment of the financial system which weakens the effects of the transmission channels of the monetary policy.Following the literature reviews which highlight the consensus of an effective monetary policy and different channels of transmission, we undertake an empirical review in developed and developing countries. The specificities of financial system of each county condition the complexity and the effects of transmission channels. Moreover, the development of financial system enhances the implementation of monetary policy as long as it enjoys public confidence. We thus emphasize the importance of the reform of financial system prior to conducting an effective monetary policy. Besides, the development of financial system links closely with that of the economy but it is likely to foster financial instability if the country doesn’t have sufficiently sound institutions. The success of the reform requires a number of preconditions such as macroeconomic stability, acceptable quality of regulations, and development of monetary market. The reform was put in place in 2001 (Blueprint [2001]) to develop a sound and efficient financial system based on market mechanisms; it could only partially achieve its objectives. It was revised in 2006 (FSDS [06-15]) to harmonize its objectives with the pace of reform which experienced economic, political, social and institutional improvements. In the current state of development of Cambodia, transmission channels of monetary policy are not fully efficient. We conducted an empirical studies based on Cambodian data to evaluate its effects. It seems that credit channel doesn’t have the impacts on economic growth but on general level of prices while monetary channel has positive and short-term impacts on general level of prices. Our study suggests the existence of a monetary channel and absence of credit channel. In a quest of the suitable monetary policy framework in the current context of the country, we analyze three forms of framework: inflation targeting, exchange rate targeting and monetary aggregate targeting. We also take into account of institutional aspects (independence, accountability, and transparency of the monetary policy implementation), communication strategy, and decision mechanisms of NBC. A monetary policy strategy based on monetary aggregate targeting appears the most suitable option. Exchange rate targeting framework seems to be a second-best option to absorb the excessive volatility and anchor the public expectations
Pinter, Julien. "Essays on two new central banking debates : central bank financial strength and monetary policy outcome : the instability of the transmission of monetary policy to deposit rates after the global financial crisis." Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01E051.
Full textThis thesis deals with the new debates on central banking which arose after the 2008 global financial crisis. More particularly, two of such debates are addressed: the debates on the financial losses in central banks’ balance sheets, and the debates on the high level of bank rates compared to market interest rates following the financial crisis. The two first chapters are related to the first debate. The link between central bank financial strength and inflation is empirically examined in a large sample of 82 countries. Theoretically, this link is potentially present when the government does not fiscally support the central bank, so that the central bank can only rely on itself to improve its financial situation. The results show that in practice central bank balance sheet deteriorations indeed lead to higher inflation when fiscal support is absent. The results, based on a particularly meticulous and consistent sample selection, do not show the presence of a link between the two variables in a general context, as the theory suggests. In the second chapter, I analyze and conceptualize the argument according to which a central bank can end a peg exchange rate regime by fear of making significant losses in the future, and I apply this analysis to the Swiss franc peg between 2011 and 2015. This argument was brought forward by many commentators to explain the Swiss move, while no research before this one did study the relevance of this argument. The empirical estimates in Chapter 2 show that this argument indeed had some credibility: under some credible scenarios the Swiss central bank would have incurred significant losses by breaking its peg 17 months later, with losses exceeding a threshold judged as relevant by many central bankers. The last chapter of this thesis focuses on the spread between deposit rates and market interest rates in the Eurozone (more specifically, the EURIBOR), which became significantly positive after the financial crisis, leading some commentators to claim that deposits were over-remunerated. This chapter upholds that the major part of this spread is not due to an « abnormal » behavior of deposits but is rather due to the fact that the EURIBOR has become irrelevant after the global financial crisis. Building an alternative to the EURIBOR, the chapter concludes that banking risks have been having a major influence on the level of deposit remuneration
