Full textThe objective of the empirical work is to investigate the financial and operational performance of the banking sector in France focusing on the performance of the domestic banks as opposed to the performance of the foreign banks operating in France. For this purpose, we try to identify the existing differences between the bank’s specific determinants of domestic and foreign banks, considering profitability, liquidity, risk and efficiency factors. The obtained results suggest the importance of leverage which differentiates domestic banks from foreign banks and implies that French commercial banks differ in funding decision and collect of deposits. Also, the domestic banks exhibit higher overall financial performance compared to the foreign banks operating in France. Nevertheless, the operational performance analysis indicates that cost efficiency and alternative profit efficiency are both higher on average for foreign banks than for domestic banks. This may be due to the decision to practice retail banking activities by domestic banks, which implies high fixed costs. However, differences in the findings between profit and cost efficiency of French domestic banks are due to differences in revenue performance. Thus, profit efficiency of domestic banks is due to excessive margins

Full textThe french banques populaires have held a special position in the economy since 1917. Their development from then until 1973 is at the heart of this thesis defendes in january 1996. Following a chronological plan, this thesis shows all the different stages in the evolution of these banks and their relationship with the states. The banques populaires are mutual benefits societies whose primary aim is to help the small business area. The end of the period coincides with the progressive opening of the banques populaires on the private individual market. This document also shows the way in which these banks work, in their reality, while at the same time underlining their regional decentralised character. A constant comparison between the credit agricole and the credit mutuel enables the importance of the banques populaires in the mutual sector to be better defined. At the same time, the confrontation of their activity with that of other banks evaluates the influence of the banques populaires in the banking sectorand the national economy

Full textFollowing the financial crisis of 2008, some banking practices have been perceived as immoral. Islamic banks now appear as an alternative for French consumers, whatever their religious preferences. The objective of this doctoral research is to model the selection process of an Islamic bank by French consumers. First, an exploratory qualitative study was conducted in two steps. Twenty-six semi-structured interviews were carried out and analyzed with Alceste, a textual data analysis software. Then, an experimental approach with Information Display Board was conducted on a sample of 113 subjects According to these two steps, constructs determining the selection of an Islamic Bank was identified, then allowing the elaboration of a conceptual model. This model was then analyzed by structural equations modeling following a data collection of a sample of 879 subjects. The results show that the selection of an Islamic Bank is explained by common variables, beyond religious preferences. These variables are service quality, perceived trust, perceived ethics, bank reputation and banking practices. Nevertheless, religiosity is identified as an attitudinal variable that influences consumers’ choices
Bassouamina, Jean-Marie Vianney. "Banques étrangères en France : investissements directs et stratégies concurrentielles." Le Havre, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998LEHA0016.
Full textThe object of this thesis is the analysis of foreign direct investments (fdi) in the banking sector in France in the recent period. It is at the crossroads of international economics, industrial economics and banking economics. The first part of this thesis is devoted to motives of foreign direct investments (fdi) in banking sector in France, with a first chapter that reviews some theories necessary to explain these investments (internalisation and eclectic approaches). Dealing with the eclectic approach, the second chapter derives three essential motives for foreign direct investment (fdi) in the banking sector in france : follow up in France of foreign customers, research of new markets and attractiveness of a highly performante financial place. The second part opens on to the third chapter which deals with organizational forms adopted by the foreign banks on the french market. For these banks, this thesis revives a distinction in three main activities (activities of international markets of assets, bilateral activities and home activities) by discussing legal forms and trying to appreciate the relative weight of foreign banks in each activity. Finally, the fourth chapter allows to appreciate the competition degree (notably by evaluation of contestability of associated markets) and the restraints that influence each banking activity. It is then closed by considering various strategic choices recently made by foreign banks in France
