Abstract:
The article aims to analyze various illustrations of court case stories about Song dynasty judge Bao Zheng (包拯, also named as Bao-gong 包公, Bao Longtu 包龍圖, 999–1062), found in Qing woodblock editions of the novel and popular woodblock prints nianhua, in order to determine how tales about the famous incorruptible judge have been transformed in the visual culture of late imperial times. The authors discovered several woodblock editions of novels about Judge Bao-gong, or Bao Dragon-Design (Bao Longtu), in the St. Petersburg State University library including one illustrated edition and several non-illustrated ones. The State Hermitage and other Russian collections hold an impressive number of popular prints depicting scenes from the traditional drama based on Judge Bao stories, while only several of them refer directly to literary pieces, being mostly scenes from the plays. The protagonists are shown wearing theatrical make-up matching their theatrical character, Judge Bao is recognized by a black-colored face symbolizing his astuteness and uncorrupted nature. The article attempts to find connections between Shi Yukun’s 石玉昆 novel “The Three Heroes and Five Gallants” (Sanxiawuyi 三俠五義, 1879), the traditional drama plays and nianhua prints featuring Judge Bao, which proliferated in the late 19th — early 20th centuries. This research claims to define sources of various types of illustrations and clarify connections between book illustration, popular prints and drama.

Soil Sci. 92: 463–470. To evaluate the feasibility of no-tillage (NT) practices for Black soils (Mollisols) in northeast China, knowledge of the effects of different tillage and rotation combinations on crop yield and profitability is required. An 8-yr field experiment was conducted to investigate variation of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) yields and economic returns under NT, moldboard plow (MP) and ridge tillage (RT) combined with continuous corn (C-C-C), corn-soybean (C-S), and corn-corn-soybean (C-C-S) rotations. Under C-S rotation, corn and soybean yields were similar to or slightly higher in NT than in MP and RT; NT corn profitability was 15.9% higher than MP, and NT soybean profitability was even higher, 62.9 and 22.4% higher than MP and RT, respectively. There were no differences in crop yield and profitability between the C-C-S and C-C-C rotations. The C-S under NT produced better yield and profitability, particularly in dry years, than the C-C-C and C-C-S rotations. Accordingly, NT combined with C-S would be a good practice to increase crop yields and profitability for the Black soils in northeast China.

Abstract:
Lithium metal is considered as one of the most promising anode candidates for high-energy batteries [1-3]. However, safety concerns induced by the formation of Li dendrites largely hinder the practical application of lithium-metal batteries [4]. It is anticipated that the use of non-flammable inorganic solid-state electrolytes can resolve these safety issues [5], but solid ceramic electrolytes generally suffer from poor physical contact with the electrode and poor electro-/chemical stability at the electrolyte|electrode interface [6]. Herein, we report on a thin and flexible hybrid electrolyte composed of NASICON-type Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP), a polymer binder, and a small amount of an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. To reinforce the interfacial stability between LATP and Li, we coat an ultrathin polysiloxane-based single-ion conducting polymer (PSiO) on the Li metal surface via a simple dip-coating method. The implementation of PSiO-coated Li (PSiO@Li) in symmetric PSiO@Li||PSiO@Li cells enables a substantial extension of the cycle life, yielding >2,000 h of stable lithium stripping-plating. The full-cells comprising PSiO@Li as the negative electrode, LiNi0.88Co0.09Mn0.03O2 (NCM88) as the positive electrode active material, and the aforementioned hybrid electrolyte exhibit substantially enhanced rate capability at high dis-/charge rates above 0.5C and greatly prolonged cycle life at 1C. The superior performance achieved herein is mainly attributed to: (1) the prevented direct contact between LATP and Li, thus avoiding the reduction of LATP and the formation of mixed ion-electron conducting interphases; (2) the regulated Li+ flux at the electrode|electrolyte interface, ensuring homogeneous Li+ stripping-plating; and (3) the promoted intimate contact between PSiO and Li via the formation of Si−O−Li bonds. Abstract:
Lithium metal batteries are drawing attention as a next generation of lithium-ion batteries due to their advantage of high theoretical capacity. However, the widespread application and commercialization of this potential battery technology is not achieved yet due to the poor cyclability and safety issues. Despite the recent progress1-2 and development of numerous strategies for the long and durable cyclability1-4, the analysis of lithium metal evolution still depends on the experimental approach in macroscale or molecular simulation in nanoscale5. In order to understand and optimize the system-level response of these lithium metal batteries, an accurate and robust modeling and simulation framework with a coupled macro and nanoscale approach is essential. In the previous reports, we have discussed simple 1D model to study stripping and plating of the lithium metal electrode and obtaining the characteristic inverse signatures in the cell voltage6, and appropriate boundary conditions ensuring mass conservation in a 2D model7. In this work, a 2D separator domain with initial surface morphology at the lithium metal electrode is considered for diffusion and migration of the lithium-ions in the domain along with reaction kinetics at the surface. The model is based on the mass and charge conservation in the system that captures the morphological evolution at the lithium metal electrode along the charge/discharge of the battery during cycling. This model is solved with in-house schemes based on spatial, temporal discretization schemes and coordinate transformation. The results show that the local current distribution at the electrode surface affects the rate and shape of the growth of the lithium metal at the negative electrode. The study has been performed for a wide range of geometric, kinetic and transport parameters. The proposed in-house model efficiently reaches a converged results compared with other numerical schemes both in speed and accuracy, and easily adaptive to optimizing tools towards cell design. Abstract:
The chemical vapour deposition method is widely used to synthesise high quality graphene with a large surface area. However, the cooling process leads to the formations of ripples and wrinkles in the graphene structure. When a self-adhered wrinkle achieves the maximum height, it then folds onto the surface and leads to a collapsed wrinkle. The presence of such deformations often affects the properties of graphene. In this article, we describe a novel mathematical model to understand the formation and geometry of these wrinkles. The stability of these wrinkles is examined based on variational derivations for the energy of each structure. The model provides detailed explanations for the geometry of these wrinkles which would help in tuning their properties. References J. Aljedani, M. J. Chen, and B. J. Cox. Abstract:
Abstract Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality of cancer patients. Kinase-dead Ikkα knock-in (KA/KA) mice develop CD4 T cell-derived autoimmune disease. Previously, we reported spontaneous lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) associated with increase macrophage and CD4 T cell numbers in KA/KA mice. Depleting macrophages dampens lung SCC development in KA/KA mice, but a lot of CD4 T cells remain in the lungs. The activity of CD4 T cells in lung SCC development is unknown. In this study, we attempted to investigate the role of CD4 T cells in lung SCC development. We performed adoptive CD4 T cell transfer experiment and found that KA/KA CD4 T cell transfer, not WT CD4 T cells, recruited marked macrophages to the lungs and induced lung SCC in KA/KA;Rag1-/- mice. The CD4 T cells isolated from the lungs of KA/KA mice and KA/KA;Rag1-/- mice with KA/KA CD4 T cell transfer expressed elevated PD-1, IL-4, IL-5, Il-13, and Il-21 levels compared to WT mice. We found that Il4 ablation, not Il5 deletion, reduced macrophage recruitment and blocked SCC development in KA/KA;Il4-/- mice as well as unlike KA/KA CD4 T cells, KA/KA;Il4-/- CD4 T cells did not induce spontaneous lung SCC in KA/KA;Rag1-/- mice with KA/KA;Il4-/- CD4 T cell injections. Taken together, the finding highlights a pathogenic role of IL-4-producing CD4 T cells in lung carcinogenesis. Abstract:
Li anodes represent a theoretical 10-fold upgrade over the capacity of graphite at comparable potential, and as such are key anode candidates for next-generation high energy density (> 1000 Wh/L) batteries. However, Li still falls below the 99.95-99.97% CE required for long-life cycling(1) and displays rate capability an order-of-magnitude lower than necessary for fast-charging (>2 C).(2) Interestingly, intrinsic Li0/Li+ redox has been reported to be more facile (j 0 > 10 mA/cm2)(3) than graphite intercalation (j 0 = 1-3 mA/cm2)(4). In spite of this, the chemical exchange of Li+ through the native solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li is typically slow (0.5-3 mA/cm2),(5) and as such it can bottleneck Li+/Li0 redox(3) and increase charge-transfer resistance.(6) The SEI thus manifests itself by substantially decreasing the exchange current j 0 measured on Li down from its intrinsic kinetic value.(7) While multiple recent studies see j 0 as a relevant property in determining Li reversibility,(1) measuring j 0 in the presence of an SEI is not straightforward. Consequently, current literature presents widely varying numerical values of j 0 in the presence of an SEI, making it challenging to discern the relationship between j 0 and CE. To bridge this gap, Li+ exchange at the Li anode is here systematically quantified using cyclic voltammetry (CV) at slow scan rates and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), both of which allow an SEI to develop natively. To avoid ambiguity with the intrinsic Li0/Li+ redox exchange current j 0, exchange rates are here interpreted in the framework of a “pseudo”-exchange current, j 0 p, that represents the total rate of Li+ exchange on the electrode. j 0 p was measured across a selection of historically-relevant and modern electrolytes, spanning low (78.0%) to high (99.3%) CE. In both methodologies, a strong dependence of j 0 p on electrolyte chemistry was identified. These differences reflect a strong correlation between CE and j 0 p, with electrolytes that display higher j 0 p typically also displaying higher CE. Upon cycling, a dynamic behavior of Li+ exchange on both Cu and Li were observed, with j 0 p typically increasing through cycling, attributed to morphological changes induced by non-uniform plating/stripping inherent to Li electrochemistry.(8) We will discuss the implications of this dynamic behavior on both the formation cycle on Cu, as well as how j 0 p changes report on SEI evolution during cycling. Finally, it was found that cycling Li with current densities j beyond j 0 p leads to substantial capacity loss and low CE, whereas electrolytes that can sustain high j 0 p are insensitive to j. Altogether, our results indicate that Li+ exchange plays a dominant role in determining the rate capability and CE of Li anodes, with high-j 0 p electrolytes displaying higher CE and better rate capability than their low-j 0 p counterparts. Abstract:
Abstract Examining how contemporary poets raised in China are looking at classical Chinese poetry from the Tang—in particular, the poetry and the figure of Li Bai 李白 (701–762)—this article questions the epistemological divide, common to scholarship, between premodern and modern Chinese poetry. The texts come from Shenqing shi 深情史 (Histories of Affection) by Liu Liduo 劉麗朵 (1979–); The Banished Immortal, Chinese-American poet and novelist Ha Jin's 哈金 (1956–) biography of Li Bai; the book-length poem-sequence Tang 唐, by Yi Sha 伊沙 (1966–); and poet Xi Chuan's 西川 (1963–) scholarly book Tang shi de dufa 唐詩的讀法 (Reading Tang Poetry). The author contends not only that these writers' dealings with Tang poetry make it part of a still-living tradition but also that such engagement offers a way to understand the dynamic, rather than static, canonicity of Tang poetry.

Abstract:
Abstract Previously we reported that bone marrow-derived macrophages are required for lung squamous cell carcinoma development in kinase-dead Ikkα knockin (KA/KA) mice. The KA/KA lungs display strikingly enlarged sizes, sustained inflammation with increased expression of multiple cytokines and chemokines and marked infiltrating macrophages and T cells, and tissue damage, which look like a “burning hill”. To determine a critical event for the pathogenesis of the lung disease and SCC development, in this study, we found that these F4/80+CD11b+CSF1R+ monocyte-derived macrophages isolated from KA/KA lungs showed enlarged sizes carrying many lipid droplets and highly expressed the genes that encode proteins involved in lipid metabolism compared to WT. To determine whether the lung lipid concentrations regulate foamy macrophage development, we incubated Raw macrophages with WT or KA/KA lung extract, respectively, and found that KA/KA lung extracts induced lipid droplets and elevated lipid levels and pathways for lipid metabolism compared to WT lung extracts. Furthermore, we found that cytokines including IL-4, IL-6, IL-33, and IFNb, promoted lipid metabolism in Raw macrophages incubated with WT lung extracts, and also stimulated lipid metabolism in human lung SCC SW900 cells. These results suggest that these cytokines, which were highly expressed in KA/KA lungs, contribute to aberrant lipid metabolism. Because IL-4, which is produced by Th2 T cells, promoted lipid metabolism in macrophages and lung SCC cells, we further showed that KA/KA lung CD4 T cells stimulated lipid gene expression in Raw macrophages compared to WT lung CD4 T cells. Depleting CD4 T cells indeed significantly decreased foamy macrophage formation in the lungs of KA/KA mice. Importantly, treatment with a lipid inhibitor reduced IL-4-mediated lipid metabolism in Raw macrophages and human lung SCC SW900 cells, as well as this treatment attenuated lung foamy macrophage numbers and dampened lung SCC development in irradiated KA/KA mice with KA/KA bone marrow transplants. These findings highlight that the interplay between CD4 T cells, macrophages, cytokines, and epithelial cells contribute to a series of biological events in a landscape scale, which promote lung disease and lung SCC development through aberrant lipid metabolism. Abstract:
Acetaminophen also known as Paracetamol (APAP) is an antipyretic and analgesic drug, used mainly for the treatment of fever and headache [1]. Prolonged use or accumulation of this drug results in liver problems where it generates hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity [2]. furthermore, the APAP is considered a potential water pollutant where the most-reported route of contamination is via unchanged excretion in urine and feces. In the actuality many new materials have been used to determination interes species implementing electrochemistry using variety of new nanomaterials, these materials show great sensibility when were implemented to modificated a electrodes [3]. The mixed metal oxides like M-type hexagonal ferrites are used in diferentes sensors on account of the magnetics propietis [4]. The oxides used in this study were synthesized through the methodology the citric combustion sol-gel route [5]. The synthesized ferrites were characterized by techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction (DRX), Spectroscopic RAMAN, IR and Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis (FESEM). In this investigation, the electrochemical study was carried out for the quantification of APAP using the techniques of cyclic voltammetry and pulse voltammetry, whit a system of three electrodes: Ag/ AgCl electrode (reference electrode), Pt wire (counter electrode) and glass carbon electrode (GCE) modified with nanoparticles of ferrites BaCo0.5Fe2O4 y Ba0.5Cu0.5Fe2O4 (working electrode). In an electrochemical cell using 5 mL phosphate-buffered saline 0.1 M, pH = 2.50 as electrolytic measures. In addition to tests with commercial drugs that contain APAP and a real sample of urine [6]. In the electrodes modified with nanoparticles of ferrites, it showed higher current responses for the electrochemical oxidation of APAP than the bare electrode. This can be attributed to the presence of barium ferrites oxides modified with copper and cobalt. The best electroactivity was presented when the electrode modified with barium ferrites substituted with cobalt was used, obtaining a detection limit of 0.255 µM ± 0.005 µM, for barium ferrites substituted with copper and the bare electrode was obtained 0.577 µM ± 0.007 µM and 0.577 µM ± 0.007 µM, respectively. The urine sample was analyzed by the same method, obtaining minimum recovery percentages of 96.6% and 93.9 for the modified electrode with barium ferrites substituted with Cobalt and Copper, respectively. Abstract:
Abstract Abstract SCI-13 The BCL-2 family proteins constitute a crucial checkpoint in apoptosis. They can be divided into 3 subfamilies based on their death regulatory activity and domain composition: 1) multidomain anti-apoptotic members such as BCL-2 and BCL-XL; 2) multidomain pro-apoptotic BAX and BAK; 3) pro-apoptotic BH3-only molecules (BH3s). Our prior study has established a hierarchical regulation of mitochondrion-dependent apoptosis by BCL-2 subfamilies. Upon apoptosis, the “activator” BH3s, including BID, BIM, and PUMA, trigger homo-oligomerization of BAX and BAK to mediate cytochrome c efflux, leading to caspase activation. Conversely, the anti-apoptotic BCL-2/BCL-XL/MCL-1 sequesters “activator” BH3s into insert complexes, thus preventing BAX/BAK activation. The remaining BH3s including BAD and NOXA do not activate BAX/BAK directly, but instead prevent the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 members from sequestering the “activator” BH3s. How the death effectors BAX and BAK are activated to trigger the mitochondria-dependent death program remains as one of the most vigorously debated topics in apoptosis research. Recently, we propose a stepwise activation model of BAX and BAK driven by activator BH3s. We demonstrate that the α1 helix of BAX keeps the α9 helix engaged in the dimerization pocket, rendering BAX as a monomer in cytosol. tBID, BIM, and PUMA bind transiently to the α1 helix of BAX to unleash auto-inhibition which allows for the structural reorganization by exposing both N- and C- termini. The C-terminal transmembrane domain hence becomes available for insertion into the mitochondrial outer membrane. tBID/BIM/PUMA remains associated with the N-terminally exposed BAX to drive the homo-oligomerization. BAK, an integral mitochondrial membrane protein, constitutively exposes its α1 helix and requires tBID/BIM/PUMA to trigger its homo-oligomerization. The homo-oligomerization of BAX/BAK appears to involve the interaction between the BH3 domain of one molecule and the canonical dimerization pocket of the other. Our study provides novel mechanistic insights regarding the spatiotemporal execution of BAX/BAK-governed cell death. As BAX and BAK are present in viable cells, their activity must be tightly regulated. Using a biochemical approach, we have previously identified VDAC2 as a gatekeeper of BAK. In viable cells, VDAC2 associates with BAK to keep BAK in check. Following death stimuli, BAK is released from VDAC2 by “activator” BH3s, thus undergoing homo-oligomerization. Our recent study provides in vivo evidence demonstrating a critical role of the VADC2-BAK complex in gauging the thymocyte survival. Genetic depletion of Vdac2 in thymus resulted in excessive cell death and hypersensitivity to diverse death stimuli including the T cell receptor engagement. Remarkably, these phenotypes were completely rescued by the concurrent deletion of Bak but not Bax. Thus, the VDAC2-BAK axis serves as a novel mechanism that governs the homeostasis of thymocytes. Impairment of apoptosis is not only central to cancer development but also renders tumors refractory to cytotoxic therapy. Accordingly, inhibitors of the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 proteins have been developed as promising anti-cancer therapeutics. Further characterization of the differential regulation between various BCL-2 subfamilies should help refine the strategies targeted on BCL-2-regulated apoptosis. Abstract:
Abstract The mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, a major mode of cell death in vertebrate animals, is characterized by the process of mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP), in which proteins of the mitochondrial inter-membrane space gain access to the cytosol, thereby triggering caspases and apoptosis. This life-or-death decision is controlled by the proteins of the Bcl-2 family. These include the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 effector proteins, Bax and Bak, that cause the permeabilization event, and the anti-apoptotic proteins, e.g., Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, Mcl-1, which prevent it. A third sub-family, the BH3-only proteins, which include Bid, Bim, Bad, Puma, and Noxa (among others), regulate the other two sub-families, promoting the activation of the effectors or blocking the activity of the anti-apoptotic proteins (or both). Structural studies have led to a greater understanding of these complex interactions and have provided the basis for the development of BH3-mimetics that show promise for cancer therapies. New structural studies have begun to elucidate the mechanisms whereby Bax and Bak become activated, opening new avenues towards promoting or inhibiting the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis. A proposed “hit and run” model of effector activation, whereby a BH3-only protein engages Bak or Bax and then must be displaced as the effector proteins associate, was validated in these structural studies. Additional, emerging insights will be discussed in the context of a unified model of Bcl-2 protein interactions. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
Abstract Pim kinases are involved in B-cell development and are overexpressed in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We hypothesized that Pim kinase inhibition would affect B-cell survival. Identified from a screen of imidazo[1,2-b]pyridazine compounds, SGI-1776 inhibits Pim-1, Pim-2, and Pim-3. Treatment of CLL cells with SGI-1776 results in a concentration-dependent induction of apoptosis. To elucidate its mechanism of action, we evaluated the effect of SGI-1776 on Pim kinase function. Unlike in replicating cells, phosphorylation of traditional Pim-1 kinase targets, phospho-Bad (Ser112) and histone H3 (Ser10), and cell-cycle proteins were unaffected by SGI-1776, suggesting an alternative mechanism in CLL. Protein levels of total c-Myc as well as phospho-c-Myc(Ser62), a Pim-1 target site, were decreased after SGI-1776 treatment. Levels of antiapoptotic proteins Bcl-2, Bcl-XL, XIAP, and proapoptotic Bak and Bax were unchanged; however, a significant reduction in Mcl-1 was observed that was not caused by caspase-mediated cleavage of Mcl-1 protein. The mechanism of decline in Mcl-1 was at the RNA level and was correlated with inhibition of global RNA synthesis. Consistent with a decline in new RNA synthesis, MCL-1 transcript levels were decreased after treatment with SGI-1776. These data suggest that SGI-1776 induces apoptosis in CLL and that the mechanism involves Mcl-1 reduction.

Abstract:
Two anaerobic bacterial strains, designated SHI-1T and SHI-2, were isolated from chlorinated solvent-contaminated groundwater. They were found to be identical in phenotypic properties and shared high (98.5–99.8 %) pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Multiple 16S rRNA genes were found to be present in the isolates as well as Pelosinus fermentans DSM 17108T and Sporotalea propionica DSM 13327T. Strains SHI-1T and SHI-2 could be differentiated from their closest phylogenetic relatives, P. fermentans DSM 17108T and S. propionica DSM 13327T, on the basis of their phenotypic and phylogenetic properties. The isolates were Gram-negative, spore-forming, motile rods with peritrichous flagella. Growth occurred at 10–42 °C and pH 5.5–8.5. Fermentative growth was observed on Casamino acids, fructose, fumarate, glucose, glycerol, pyruvate and yeast extract. The major organic acids produced from glucose and glycerol fermentation were propionate and acetate. The major organic acids produced from fermentation of fumarate were propionate, acetate and succinate. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 4 (consisting of C15 : 1ω8c and/or C15 : 2), summed feature 8 (consisting of C17 : 1ω8c and/or C17 : 2) and C14 : 0 dimethyl aldehyde. The polar lipids comprised aminophospholipids, including phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine, and an unknown phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.2 mol%. We propose that strains SHI-1T and SHI-2 are assigned to a novel species of the genus Pelosinus , with the name Pelosinus defluvii sp. nov. (type strain SHI-1T = NRRL Y-59407T = LMG 25549T). The description of the genus Pelosinus is emended. We also propose the transfer of S. propionica to the genus Pelosinus as Pelosinus propionicus comb. nov. (type strain TmPN3T = DSM 13327T = ATCC BAA-626T), on the basis of phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic properties.

Abstract:
Autophagy is a physiological process that helps maintain a balance between the manufacture of cellular components and breakdown of damaged organelles and other toxic cellular constituents. Changes in autophagic markers are readily detectable in the spinal cord and brain following neurotrauma, including traumatic spinal cord and brain injury (SCI/TBI). However, the role of autophagy in neurotrauma remains less clear. Whether autophagy is good or bad is under debate, with strong support for both a beneficial and detrimental role for autophagy in experimental models of neurotrauma. Emerging data suggest that autophagic flux, a measure of autophagic degradation activity, is impaired in injured central nervous systems (CNS), and interventions that stimulate autophagic flux may provide neuroprotection in SCI/TBI models. Recent data demonstrating that neurotrauma can cause lysosomal membrane damage resulting in pathological autophagosome accumulation in the spinal cord and brain further supports the idea that the impairment of the autophagy–lysosome pathway may be a part of secondary injury processes of SCI/TBI. Here, we review experimental work on the complex and varied responses of autophagy in terms of both the beneficial and detrimental effects in SCI and TBI models. We also discuss the existing and developing therapeutic options aimed at reducing the disruption of autophagy to protect the CNS after injuries.

Abstract:
Abstract Human platelets exhibit a circulating lifespan of ~10 days, mouse platelets ~5 days. This finite existence is circumscribed by members of the Bcl-2 family of proteins, which control the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Pro-survival Bcl-xL is the critical regulator of platelet lifespan, functioning to keep pro-death Bak and Bax in check, thereby maintaining platelet viability. After 5–10 days in the circulation, platelets not consumed in hemostatic processes initiate a Bak and Bax-dependent cell death program and clearance from the bloodstream. Mutations in Bcl-xL reduce platelet lifespan in a dose-dependent fashion, while deletion of Bak and Bax extend it. Studies with the BH3 mimetic compound ABT-737, which inhibits pro-survival Bcl-xL, have shown that platelets induced to undergo cell death in vitro exhibit many of the hallmarks of apoptosis in nucleated cells, including mitochondrial damage, caspase activation and externalization of membrane phosphatidylserine (PS). Whether any of these features occur during physiological platelet clearance remains unclear. Certainly, mitochondrial damage can reduce the recovery of transfused platelets, but whether PS – which is known to promote the pro-coagulant activity of agonist-activated platelets – also acts as a clearance signal for dying platelets in vivo is yet to be established. Conversely, Bak and Bax may play a role in mediating PS exposure triggered by activation. Supporting the idea that there may be crosstalk between classical platelet signaling pathways and the intrinsic apoptosis pathway is recent evidence that platelet agonists can also activate caspases. Intriguingly, elements of the intrinsic pathway may also contribute to the generation of platelets by megakaryocytes. Several groups have demonstrated that megakaryocytes contain activated caspases and that their inhibition can block platelet shedding by cultured cells. Preliminary evidence we have generated suggests that Bcl-2 family proteins may be required for platelet production in vivo. Thus, it appears that there is much to be understood about the role of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway in the regulation of platelet biogenesis, function, and death.

Abstract:
Abstract Naitō Konan (1866-1934) was one of towering figures of twentieth-century Sinology, in Japan, China, and elsewhere. His theories concerning Chinese history continue to influence us all, often through secondary or tertiary means. Among his many books and articles is a large volume entitled Shina shigaku shi (History of Chinese historiography), arguably the first such comprehensive work in any language and still unsurpassed to this day, roughly eighty years after the chapters which comprise it were first delivered as lectures in Kyoto. Naitō argued that Chinese historical writing was divided, as we all know now, into two traditions: the comprehensive style (tongshi) launched by Sima Qian and the single-period style (duandai shi) begun somewhat later by Ban Gu. Naitō himself always favored the former, and he showed a marked predilection for the major historical works over the centuries by Chinese with the character tong in their titles: such as Liu Zhiji's Tong shi, Du You's Tong zhi (about which he lectured before the Japanese emperor in 1931), Ma Duanlin's Wenxian tongkao, and most notably Zhang Xuecheng's Wenshi tongyi. He did not disragrd or disrespect the duandai shi approach, but he did believe that by cutting off chunks of history one could not get a proper sense of the long-term forces at work in the historical process, what the great French historians later would call la longue durée.

Abstract:
AbstractBan Gu's compilation of the Han shu may be seen in the context of a number of intellectual and religious developments. By his time the idea of the Tian ming and the theory of the Wu xing were being applied to imperial times. Officials were quoting the sayings of Kongzi to support their arguments, and the writings of distinguished scholars such as Jing Fang, Liu Xiang, Liu Xin and Yang Xiong were well known. The religious controversies that had begun in the reign of Chengdi had died down. The pursuit of scholarship had received a new impetus thanks partly to the discussions held in 79 ce. Ban Gu drew somewhat freely on existing literature, being prudent to select material that would not arouse enmity; his sister called on official documents to complete her part of the history. As an innovator Ban Gu introduced chapters on subjects that had not been treated in the Shi ji, such as bibliography and the laws. Ready to criticize the actions of officials or the character of an emperor openly, he also contrived to do so implicitly.

Abstract:
This paper studies surface air temperature inversions and their impact on air pollution under the background of meteorological conditions in southern Poland. The relationship of temperature gradients and air quality classes with weather conditions in the most urbanized and polluted part of Poland as represented by the Upper Silesia region (USR) within the administrative boundaries of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolis (GZM) is presented. Based on probability analysis this study hierarchized the role of the selected weather elements in the development of surface-based temperature inversion (SBI) and air quality (AQ). The thresholds of weather elements for a rapid increase in the probability of oppressive air pollution episodes were distinguished. Although most SBI occurred in summer winter SBIs were of great importance. In that season a bad air quality occurred during >70% of strong inversions and >50% of moderate inversions. Air temperature more strongly triggered AQ than SBI development. Wind speed was critical for SBI and significant for AQ development. A low cloudiness favored SBI occurrence altered air quality in winter and spring during SBI and favored very bad AQ5 (>180 µg/m3) occurrence. The probability of high air pollution enhanced by SBI rapidly increased in winter when the air temperature dropped below −6 °C the wind speed decreased below 1.5 m/s and the sky was cloudless. Changes in the relative humidity did not induce rapid changes in the occurrence of bad AQ events during SBI

Full text
Abstract:
Simone de Beauvoir's novel She Came to Stay follows Françoise and her partner Pierre as their intimacy becomes increasingly entangled with the young and tempestuous Xavière. Many readings of the novel explain Françoise's bad feeling and eventual violence as symptoms of sexual jealousy. The book has also been read as a veiled autobiography of Beauvoir and Sartre's similar entanglement with Olga Kosakiewicz, so that, very often, Françoise's jealousy is assumed to stand in for Beauvoir's own. This article is about misreading in two ways. First, I argue that the common view that this is a story in part or in whole about sexual jealousy reflects a radical simplification of the emotional and interpersonal dynamics of the “trio.” Second, I argue that this interpretive simplification is in fact common in mainstream readings of nonmonogamous relationships, where “jealousy” is used to name any and all bad feelings in the vicinity of the nonmonogamous relationship, and where that bad feeling is interpreted as caused by the nonmonogamy itself. To conclude, I suggest that She Came to Stay, and particularly its notorious ending, can be seen as Beauvoir's depiction—and refusal—of the misreadings that constitute the “situation” of nonmonogamy in everyday life.
