After discussing the pre-history of the bar mitzvah ceremony, this chapter analyzes four basic components of the ceremony before the year 1800: the Barukh sheptarani blessing; the aliyah to the Torah; the se’udat mitzvah (festive meal); and the derashah (sermon given by the bar mitzvah boy). The bulk of the chapter is devoted to six major changes that transpired after the year 1800: from bar mitzvah to Confirmation and back to bar and bat mitzvah; the origin and development of the bat mitzvah ceremony; the transformation of the elaborate derashah prepared by a teacher or rabbi to a much simpler devar torah prepared by the bar or bat mitzvah boy or girl; the transformation of a simple se’udat mitzvah into an elaborate party; the adoption of the Ashkenazic bar mitzvah ceremony by Sephardic and Oriental Jews; and the secular bar or bat mitzvah ceremony or party.

Abstract:
This article is about the story of a favorite Jewish song of many people around the world. Hava Nagila is one of the first modern Israeli folk songs in the Hebrew language. It went on to become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and bar/bat (b'nei) mitzvah celebrations. The melody is based on a Hassidic Nigun. According to sources, the melody is taken from a Ukrainian folk song from Bukovina. The text was probably the work of musicologist Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, written in 1918. The text was composed in 1918, to celebrate the Balfour Declaration and the British victory over the Turks in 1917. During World War I, Idelsohn served in the Turkish Army as a bandmaster in Gaza, returning to his research in Jerusalem at the end of the war in 1919. In 1922, he published the Hebrew song book, “Sefer Hashirim”, which includes the first publication of his arrangement of the song Hava Nagila.

“The Healthy Plan of Enclosed Coastal Environments” was a project implemented from 2011 to 2013 to design an effective action plan for restoring a healthy environment in Mitsu Bay, Hiroshima, Japan. After collecting and analyzing natural and social background information, two controversial issues associated with the bay’s ecosystem were identified: a decrease in oyster production that may be due to oligotrophication of the bay, and deterioration of sediment quality caused by oyster culture. Four mitigation approaches were proposed by the committee and their effectiveness was evaluated using numerical calculations. An application of hot air-dried oyster shells (HACOS) to the sediment was considered the most effective measure, because the remediation of sediment quality by adsorbing hydrogen sulfide may increase benthos biomass and fisheries production. Improved conditions were estimated to continue for 10 years. The application of HACOS is easy for fishermen, and is very cost effective because it is a by-product of extensive oyster culturing in the bay. Thus, the approach is also considered advantageous for establishing a recycling-orientated community. The effective action plan for sustainable fisheries and restoration of the environment outlined in this study is proposed as a leading model of design and implementation.

Abstract:
Šventosios–Upninkų vandeningojo komplekso požeminio vandens gamtiniai resursai įvertinti panaudojant bendrą erdvinį 3D Baltijos artezinio baseino (BAB) matematinį modelį. Modelis sukurtas ir kalibruotas panaudojant gausią geologinio–hidrogeologinio kartografavimo, gręžinių, monitoringo bei įvairių tyrimų informaciją. Modeliavimo rezultatai parodė, kad Šventosios–Upninkų vandeningasis kompleksas pasižymi dideliais gamtiniais požeminio vandens resursais, kurie siekia 3,4 mln. m3/d. Pagrindinis jų formavimosi šaltinis yra prietaka iš gruntinio bei aukščiau slūgstančių spūdinių vandeningųjų sluoksnių – 3,3 mln. m3/d (97 %). Didžioji dalis gamtinių resursų išteka į gruntinį ir aukščiau slūgstančius spūdinius vandeninguosius sluoksnius – 2,0 mln. m3/d (59 %), upes – 1 mln. m3/d (30 %), Baltijos jūrą – 238 tūkst. m3/d (7 %). Jų formavimą sąlygoja gretimų vandeningųjų ir vandeniui silpnai laidžių sluoksnių geologinė–hidrogeologinė sąranga, infiltracinė mityba ir iškrovos ypatumai į upių tinklą bei Baltijos jūros šelfe. Komplekso gamtinių resursų pasiskirstymas Baltijos regione nevienodas. Didžioji išteklių dalis koncentruojasi Baltijos bei Kuršo aukštumų ruožuose, kurie yra intensyviausios komplekso mitybos sritimis. Didėjant komplekso slūgsojimo gyliui dėl mažėjančios mitybos iš aukščiau slūgstančių vandeningųjų sluoksnių jo gamtinių resursų kiekis mažėja. Sudarytas filtracinis modelis ateityje suteiks galimybę įvertinti vandeningojo komplekso eksploatacinius požeminio vandens išteklius visame Baltijos regione.

Abstract:
The effects of hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface patterning on critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) were studied using custom-engineered testing surfaces. Patterning was created over a sapphire substrate and tested in a pool boiling facility in MITs Reactor Hydraulics Laboratory. The hydrophilic and hydrophobic matrices were created using layer by layer deposition of 50 nm thick SiO2 nanoparticles and monolayer thickness fluorosilane, respectively. Ultraviolet ozone patterning was then used with chrome-printed masks to create the desired geometric features. Hexagon, ring, star, and mixed patterns were tested to determine their abilities to affect CHF and HTC through prevention of bubble pinning at high heat fluxes. During testing, an infrared camera was used to measure the surface temperature distribution as well as locate nucleation sites for data analysis. It was found that CHF values were enhanced over the bare sapphire values by approximately 90% for hexagons, 60% for stars, 65% for rings, and 50% for mixed patterns. Contrary to expectations, patterning did not seem to affect the HTC values significantly. Although patterning did improve CHF performance over bare heaters, both CHF and HTC were found to be statistically similar to those for unpatterned, uniformly hydrophilic surfaces.
