Wittwer, Preston Haycock. "How President Barack Obama Reshaped the Rhetorical Presidency by Slow Jamming the News." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7223.

Full text
Abstract:
The rhetorical presidency encompasses all the ways a president communicates and acts. These rhetorical elements of the job are not prescribed in the Constitution and as a result it is the presidents themselves who help shape the cultural understanding of presidentiality, of what it means to be president. When President Barack Obama participated in a "Slow Jam the News" comedy sketch on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in 2012, he took the rhetorical presidency to a place it had never been before. This choice established a new genre of presidential rhetoric that President Obama would rely on throughout his time in the White House—communicating directly to target audiences via the YouTube bully pulpit. The aim of this thesis is twofold: first, provide historical context for presidents utilizing comedy and new forms of mass media for political ends; and second, rhetorically analyze select comedic YouTube videos to reveal how President Obama reshaped the rhetorical presidency to create new opportunities to succeed both culturally and politically.

African American Studies
Ph.D.
This dissertation examines President Barack Obama as a symbol and his rhetoric through an Afrocentric analytical lens. The problem that prompted my research was the current process (and future probability) of President Barack Obama's image and legacy being drastically revised from the current perceptions held by most who observe him daily. In this study, the researcher utilized an empirical, symbolic, and rhetorical approach to conduct an Afrocentric data analysis. This process included a review of the foundational terms and concepts utilized to express the Afrocentric idea (including Afrocentricity, location, and agency), and ultimately led to new concepts, analytical tools, and theories based on the evidence manifested over the course this study. This text represents an attempt to seize the magnitude of the "Democratic day" that Barack Obama was elected in a way that it could strengthen understanding of the Afrocentric idea. Based upon the analytical foundation of Afrocentricity I presented a methodology described as Beneficial Extraction method that will highlight the information, examples, strategies and attributes that can be utilized, salvaged and implemented for the uplift of African people. My findings include, the need for an increase in the appreciation for incremental progress in the African/African American community and the need to refine the ability to recognize and benefit from multiple and diverse methods of struggle throughout the African Diaspora.

Abstract:
Humorous jokes and pun that we see through social media and television are more and more influential to the current political debate. How can a politician turn this into an advantage? This dissertation tries to analyse the interaction between humour and politics. Humour has been an important part of rhetoric since Socrates and Aristotle, and analysing the legacy of presidents like Reagan and Clinton, it is arguably possible to affirm that their popularity was fostered by their characteristic use of humour in public venues. Looking at Obama’s speech at the 2016 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, it is possible to take a deeper look at how jokes affects the perception of politicians and how politicians can use humour to their advantage. The data has shown that humour has a positive outcome on the receptiveness and the likeability of a politician, thus helping its image building and narrative creation in political campaigns: humour it is a valuable tool to arouse interest and create a common mood to bring the audience closer, it can be used to attack opponents without showing disrespect or impoliteness, it is an effective way to save face or defend a personal position, or it is possible to lighten difficult topics through it.

Abstract:
During the 2008 Presidential election, questions concerning Barack Obama’s religious views arose. Specifically, the controversy surrounding Obama’s former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, caused some people to wonder how Wright’s theology may have influenced Obama. This project investigates Obama’s religious views and examines several forces, including Wright, which influenced his theological perspective. Wright bases his theological perspective on the works of James Cone, a significant figure in Black Liberation Theology and a mentor to Wright. This thesis compares and contrasts Obama’s religious perspective with that of James Cone.

Full text
Abstract:
Barack Obama’s victory in November 2008 was a historic moment when the themes of ‘hope’ and ‘change’ he had promoted during the campaign came to fruition. His election as the first black US President fitted the conservative narrative of a postracial US society in which race no longer had a significant influence. This thesis argues that Obama’s presidency punctures the illusion of a postracial society by examining a series of real and political controversies around race that occurred during the 2008 presidential campaign and his first term. The controversies selected display various levels of seriousness, reflecting the variety and the nature of racial attacks launched against Obama. The first controversy illustrates how ‘race’ was there from the start as an opportunity for his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton and her husband, former US President Bill Clinton, while the following four controversies are more personalised, having been provoked by Republicans and conservatives around Obama’s relationships with his pastor of twenty years Reverend Jeremiah Wright, his friend Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., his wife Michelle Obama and his father Barack Obama Sr. Close examination of these five attempts to damage Obama politically reveals the extent to which racially- inflected issues and stereotypes prevail in contemporary US society, including pernicious stereotypes which portray African American pastors as radical and divisive, African American men as criminals, African American women as angry, and that harness racial nativism to do so. The analysis of the controversies highlighted here uncovers how Obama’s stance on US race relations developed, and identifies the shifts from his campaign to his presidency and, indeed, to the second term when he made substantial efforts to accelerate overdue reforms in policing and mass incarceration.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis endeavors to examine the imagery and rhetoric surrounding the portrayal of President Barack Obama during the national debate over health care reform from the summer of 2009 into the spring of 2010. It is argued that the critics of the health care reform legislation used images to portray the president as Adolf Hitler, Che Guevara, The Joker, as well as other images such as the swastika and the Wehrmacht symbol as stand-in euphemisms for race to discredit Barack Obama. A number of exemplar images have been selected from various websites and publications specifically addressing the portrayal of Barack Obama not only in starkly menacing tones, but also in images suggesting the president is a villainous black man attempting to pass for white in order to accomplish his tyrannical goals. The images used in this thesis speak to the power of fantasy themes and the use of fear in rhetorical imagery inasmuch as they attempt to stoke a narrative seizing upon the anxieties of an American public caught in the grip of difficult financial times, finding themselves being led by the nation’s first African-American president. This thesis complements earlier research exploring the role of race in politics and public policy debates. And it is hoped this work will contribute to a better understanding of the growing influence of talk radio, as well as perhaps the need for greater civics literacy.

Abstract:
Shortly after his inauguration in 2009, President Barack Obama set to work on health care reform. Little more than a year later the President signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which achieved a goal of so many previous administrations, into law. In order to encourage the passage of health care reform, Obama promoted a health care crisis in America. This study examines the President's rhetoric surrounding the health care crisis in order to explore the characteristics of a potential sub-genre of presidential discourse—domestic promoted crisis. Textual analysis of the President's remarks on health care revealed five strategies used in order to promote this crisis to the American people and encourage legislation to resolve it. In addition to characteristics, the concept of promotion of crises is discussed.

Rama, Christopher J. "Executive Prerogative: The Constitutionality and Future Implications of President Barack Obama's 2014 Executive Order regarding Immigration Law in the United States of America." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1060.

Full text
Abstract:
United States President Barack Obama issued an Executive order on November 20, 2014 to implement new law regarding the American immigration system and deportations. The system has long been skewed, and a polarizing issue among both the general public and of those involved in the United States government. Obama, by issuing this decree, created a law on his own due to congressional deadlock in creating and passing immigration reform legislation. However, the constitutionality of his decision to do so has now become highly debated, with many officials and academics across the country asserting their beliefs in his legal ability to issue the order. The ability to create laws is explicitly prescribed to the Legislative branch in the Constitution, but there have been past examples of Executive authority being necessary so as to preserve the Union and allow the government to continue. This thesis will examine the constitutionality of Obama’s Executive decree and the potential precedent that it will set for future Presidents by analyzing it within the context of John Locke, the original proprietor for the rule of law, James Madison, the father of the United States Constitution and separation of powers system, Alexander Hamilton, the forthcoming advocate for an energetic Executive of the Founding Fathers, the Abraham Lincoln presidency, which involved the crisis known as the Civil War, and the George W. Bush presidency, widely known as one of the most polarizing constitutional presidencies in American history. When looking at these past examples it becomes clear that Barack Obama overstepped his place in the government with no existential crisis threatening the nation, therefore setting a dangerous precedent for future Executive’s as well as damaging the force of the separation of powers system.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to contribute to the understanding of ideology conveyed by lexical items and framing of texts. Since ideology is embedded in language the frames used in newspapers construct a narrow ideological perspective for the readers to interpret subjects and events through. On the basis of editorials from The Washington Post and The Washington Times that cover President Barack Obama, the study examines how the editorials differ in their framing of Obama and which discourses and keywords occur unusually frequently in each newspaper. Findings suggest that when it comes to framing, The Washington Post allows for a relatively balanced perspective on Obama as they both support and criticise him, while The Washington Times overwhelmingly condemns and attacks Obama. A keyword analysis points to unusually frequent discourses on race, conservatives and reforms in The Washington Post, and spending, unemployment and political institutions in The Washington Times. Because of their ideological differences the newspapers construct a reality where the subject, Obama, is presented in very different ways.

Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative case study was to address the problem of domestic terrorism facing the United States. This concern led to a comprehensive examination of historical documents that focused on the temporal evolution of the problem beginning with the Carter administration and continuing through the Obama administration. The conceptual foundation centered on resolving the research question and validating three hypotheses directed at qualifying the escalation of domestic incidents of terrorism. This led to developing a behavioral model to assist law enforcement agencies in combating the issue of domestic terrorism. Bivariate and clustering statistical analysis validated the data while qualifying the demographics of the various typologies of U.S. domestic terrorists. The use of case study analysis, which drew on historical documents for evidence, considered the evolution of various groups, motivations, their ideologies, and goals. These variables were compared to successes and failures of relevant federal policies. The lack of understanding and oversight that led to an escalation of the number of incidents was also evaluated. Using ethical and scientific guidelines and protocols, the study’s findings promote the need for future research and highlight the dangers of repeating the past. By developing a behavioral model, this study gives law enforcement a valuable tool for resolving domestic terrorism. Additional considerations relate to future policy implications and the course of future research.

Abstract:

Rhetoric and politics have been interrelated through time. Major political leaders have tried to influence their followers through well-organized and well-written political speeches since the Roman Empire and Byzantium. As one of the original writers of rhetoric, Aristotle referred to it as the art of finding the best aspect of an argument that tends to convince the audience. In my thesis, I analyze and compare the rhetoric of President George W. Bush with that of President Barack Obama. Specifically, I compare and contrast their respective State of the Union Addresses. The questions that I want to answer lay upon the methods both Presidents use during their respective speeches. My thesis also discusses their respective prioritized topics. I give a short presentation of the importance of rhetoric, ranging from the Roman Empire to today‟s American politics. I also comment on the meaning of rhetoric in the modern age. In order to perform my analysis, I use the five stage method of rhetorical analysis: Context, Disposition, Means to convince, Argumentation Analysis and Style. The different argument styles of President Bush and President Obama are discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper seeks to determine under what conditions a U.S. president can implement a grand strategy given the nature of domestic and international opportunities and constraints. It will examine three comparative case studies: Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, with the goal of determining what conditions are necessary at the individual, domestic, and systemic levels of analysis for grand strategy implementation. At the individual level, it will apply operational code analysis, as well as an examination of personal characteristics for each case study. At the domestic level, it will apply a five-prong test for examining factors that are key to grand strategy implementation: (1) unity of foreign policy team; (2) strength of presidency; (3) party alignment between Congress and the president; (4) public opinion; and (5) strength of domestic economy. At the systemic level, it will examine significant events faced by each president that tested whether his grand strategy could respond effectively to international imperatives. Ultimately, it will assess the success of each president's attempt at grand strategy implementation based on: (1) how closely U.S. policies aligned with his grand strategy; and (2) whether policies put in place that aligned with his grand strategy improved the global standing of the U.S. Through this analysis, it will assess the larger implications of having a grand strategy on U.S. foreign policy.

Abstract:
This dissertation which falls within the intellectual tradition of American Political Development explores the dialectical links between the entrepreneurship of US presidents on health care reform, the development of the American health care system and its latest product, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which was signed into law in 2010. This work analyses the mutual forces of influence at work between a deeply constrained executive in this particular field of public policy and a health care system whose foundations and contours are in constant mutation. Given its controversial nature, its complexity and its weight in the US economy, health care reform directly affects the dynamics of public governance. Health care reform must therefore be considered as a laboratory and an accelerator of innovations for the presidency, in a political system in which its sphere of action is limited, as much by checks and balances as by the influence of other entrepreneurs who enjoy equivalent if not greater legitimacy than the executive branch to take action on the thorny issue of health care. The passage of the PPACA, the fact that it was signed into law by a democratic president after a century of failed attempts at ambitious reform as well as its arduous implementation, are a picture perfect case study on the evolutions of the presidential institution and on the routinization of heterodox presidential entrepreneurship

Between the end of George W. Bush’s government and Barack Obama’s first term, the United States began its participation in Transpacific Partnership (TPP). In order to understand american motivation for this regional trade agreement, our hypothesis supported that new asian regionalism dynamics had a weight in US trade policy strategy. We highlitgh ASEAN+3 and ASEAN+6, groups leading for Japan and China to increase economic integration of East Asia. In this configuration, the United States had been excluded. Aiming to check this, we use the “Inside Trade” platform, interviews and news of important newspapers; the White House archives (reports of the main agencies and discourses); annual reports and other documents from USTR; also US Department of State’s archives (especially the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs). The empirical analysis reveal that fear of United States’ exclusion and the China’s predominance as political actor in intra-asian trade were often raised by business and policy makers of US trade policy. Beyond regional reasons, US envolvement is explained by its interest to shape the rules conforming global trade regime. We demonstrate that raising US political presence and constraining chinese emergence were fundamental tasks to achieve this goal.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Political Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The United States of America (USA) has a new president in the White House - a president whose rhetoric appears to distance himself from the policies of the previous administration. This also appears to hold true for his approach with regard to nuclear nonproliferation. The overarching research aim of this study is to explore whether the Obama administration’s policy with regard to nuclear non-proliferation will differ significantly from that of the Bush administration. The broader subject of nuclear non-proliferation will be subdivided into three themes, namely: disarmament, proliferation by non-nuclear states and nuclear terrorism. In order to sketch the international context within which the USA’s policy must be viewed, an overview of the nuclear non-proliferation regime is provided. This will be followed by an exploration of disarmament, proliferation by nonnuclear states (with Iran and North Korea as case studies) and nuclear terrorism. In each case, a comparison between the Bush administration and the Obama administration’s policies will be done. Finally, an analysis will be done of the main similarities and differences between the two administrations’ approaches, with a focus on the use of hard, soft and smart power. The study concludes that the primary difference between the Bush and Obama administration’s approaches is that Bush pursued only one policy option (hard power) at a time, while Obama intends to use many different policy options (smart power) at the same time, with a focus on increasing the use of soft power. This sort of pragmatism may just be what the USA needs right now in order to address the problem of nuclear proliferation.

After the September 11 attacks, the United States started to actively take counterterrorist actions. Regarding the perception of national security, the United States just confined national security not only to the traditional security issues. Since then, terrorism has been regarded by the United States as the major source of threats. Besides, the United States emphasized that combat of terrorism should be the responsibilities of all countries in the world, and started to implement anti-terrorism strategy as the key action to maintain national security. Ever since Barack Obama took office, he did not neglect the crisis that terrorist organization might bring to the country, and also extremely evaluate the overall anti-terrorism strategy of the United States. After he took office, he immediately reviewed and adjusted the anti-terrorism strategy of George W. Bush administration. He stressed that anti-terrorism strategy should be presented in a more multi-alteral and flexible way, and should not be confined to be unilateral and aggressive actions. During the presidency of Barack Obama, he not only fulfilled the counterterrorist goals, but also continuously adjusted the cores and policies of anti-terrorism strategy. After the shot of Usama bin Laden and completion of such an important counterterrorism milestone, “National Strategy for Counterterrorism” was released in 2011. From this, the adjustment path of Barack Obama’s anti-terrorism strategy can be traced. This thesis will make a brief explanation on the extension and changes of the American anti-terrorism strategy, and explores the concrete counterterrorist actions taken by the United States under the framework of national security strategies. The thesis will also describe the background of the anti-terrorism strategy proposed by Barack Obama government, as well as the corresponding characteristics.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the discourse of Obama’s speeches to argue my thesis that Obama won election by virtue of his rhetorical speechmaking but more specifically, his ability to manage race in those speeches. I define and refer to Obama’s rhetorical handling of race in his speechmaking throughout the campaign as the rhetoric of race management. By rhetorical race management, I mean the strategic use of race (or obfuscation of race) in one’s discourse to manage or affect the audience’s beliefs or opinions of the listener. From a communication-based standpoint, understanding how race operated in this election requires us to examine the history of racism in the United States as well as critical scholarly work on the subject. Understanding how Obama was able to manage race in his rhetoric is necessary because it forces us to perhaps reexamine and scrutinize the 2008 Presidential election more carefully for several reasons. As rhetorical scholars, if we are in the business of understanding how our icons and politicians can potentially manipulate and use our rhetorical signs and symbols against us—or in spite of us--it is in our best interest to understand why the process occurred and why we allowed it to happen. I suggest that Obama’s deliberate attempt to weave ideological constructs like patriotism and the American Dream into his campaign strategy obfuscated his representation as the marginalized “other” and created a new political identity that has little to do with marginalization. By examining the theories of scholars like Kenneth Burke, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Walter Fisher, and Dana Cloud, I outline how race and racism historically operated in our political elections, from both a sociopolitical, or quantitative perspective, as well as a critical perspective. By using a multimethod analysis, we are better positioned to understand how Barack Obama successfully played the race card in the Presidential Election of 2008. More importantly, I argue in my conclusion why his use of rhetorical race management, was absolutely necessary if he were to become the first African-American president in a historically racist country.

Abstract:
On January 8th, 2011 tragedy struck in Tucson, Arizona. A gunman opened fire on Representative Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on Your Corner" event, wounding thirteen and killing six ("Arizona Shooting"). Four days later, President Obama spoke to a grieving crowd at the University of Arizona's McKale Memorial Center. This study seeks to demonstrate how the dramatistic process and the pentad provide insight into how Obama guides the nation through the process of relieving the guilt. Specifically, Obama's call for mortification instead of scapegoating as the means for victimage is examined in light of the context and organizational structure of the speech. In addition, a pentadic analysis of the speech is conducted, showing Obama's stress on the agent-agency ratio and a corresponding idealist-pragmatist outlook. Finally, conclusions are drawn about what this study adds to the academic literature on national eulogies, the presidency, and rhetorical studies at large.

The importance of the U.S. Presidency has risen dramatically in the past 240 years, aiso the strength and activities of the U.S. has involved in the operation of the international affairs and became the focus of attention. The implementation of the U.S. Presidential System has made each President of the U.S. promoted military generals such appointed and removed from office; all of them have great powers. The U.S. President has the power to appointment of a military general; it cannot be promoted just little qualifications and constraints, with the great power of appointment. For example, when General Eisenhower served as Supreme Allied Highly Commander in Europe during World War Ⅱ, he was promoted to a four-star general from a colonel, just four years. Alexander Haig, served as the Richard Nixon’s presidency as deputy national security adviser, then promoted as secretary of state in the presidency of Ronald Reagan, also was a special case of a high-ranking general meteoric rise all the way. However, relatively, the President of the United States has the power to appoint high-ranking generals, same the removal power for high-ranking general. During the 1991 Gulf War, the U.S. Air Force chief of staff due to unauthorized, unauthorized external speech was immediately met with White House dismissed. Soon after, the General was taken office by President Bill Clinton, just cause he criticized him “to evade military service”, “private behavior for mistake”, and the implementation of the “Homosexual military service” policy, immediately dismissed by the Air Force Major General Campbell in public and a fine of 7,000 dollars. These, though not the President of the United States or the White House personally led appointment, removal and also reflects the U.S. President as a Commander in Chief to get along with high-ranking general relationships. In addition, the United States on October 1, 1986 through the “Goldwater-Nichols Act”(Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense reorganization Act of 1986, that is, for the reform of the defense system in the United States Department of Defense Reform Act), mainly for the United States military budget allocation, procurement of weapons systems, the promotion of officers and personnel, as well as the Joint Chiefs of Staff "(closely related to the President of the United States military Joint Chiefs of Staff, JCS) institutional reform, the paper will be the study of dismissal rests, the paper will focus on the legislative background of the Act affect the level of Merger to be analyzed. Thus, there are so many discussions among the Presidential Rights and other issues in our country; this will be a very important progress at the National Security and National Defense issues. Therefore, this Dissertation will use the Historical Research Method and Document Studies for the implementations of the Law of the U.S. top military leaders and personnel system for 27 years, as well as military leadership between the Presidents of the United States and armed forces over the years, to do an analysis and discussed.

A Study of American Education Policy:A Case of Education Blueprint: An Economy Built to Last Proposed by President Barack Obama Abstract President Obama laid out a blueprint for an economy that’s built to last in 2012. He believed that education was the cornerstone of creating an American economy that is built to last. He proposed the "Education Blueprint: An economy built to last ", and thought that the link between the strength of American education and the strength of American economy was a simple one — ensuring that every student in America that graduates from high school is prepared for college and a successful career. Having a good education is central to rebuilding the American economy and securing a brighter future. The contents mainly discussed the background, strategies, and the results of “Education Blueprint: An Economy Built to Last”. Some suggestions will be proposed for educational reforms in Taiwan. This Study is mainly based on a semi-structured interview method. The researcher interviewed experts and educational administrators to get more information. According to the analysis and results, there were several conclusions: 1. The background of "Education Blueprint: An economy built to last " is that the strength of the American economy is inextricably linked to the strength of the American educational system. 2. With the K-12 educational reform, every student in America graduates from high school is prepared for college and a successful career, and has access to higher education. 3. Adopted positive and alternative ways to carry out federal policy and show performance. 4. According to the " Education Blueprint: An economic built to last ", it gave us many inspirations, for example, integration of government's overall resources to support the policy of cultivating human resources, use of competitive funds to achieve the goals of educational reform, and emphasis on student learning achievement- centered educational reform. Finally, based on the conclusions, the study will come up with specific suggestions for the educational administrator for reference when creating policy.

Abstract:
The recent usage of presidential directives by President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump initiated debates around limits of presidential power. Research on the presidential power has shown lack of focus on the presidential directives, misinterpretation and wrong terminology which resulted in false accusations of presidential overreach and abuse of power. This thesis argues that the political gridlock and increasing passivity of Congress have contributed to a shift between the executive and legislative power of government. This thesis will trace the extent to which Congress has become resistant to pass two of the key priorities of President Obama's political agenda - immigration reform and gun regulation, after which the President had to act on the issues unilaterally. The main aim of the thesis is to show that presidential directives of President Obama were not issued in a vacuum and that there were debates, persuasion and negotiations preceding the executive actions in an attempt to advance President's agenda in a form of bipartisan legislation rather than unilateral presidential directive.

Abstract:
This dissertation intends, as it main purpose, to study and characterise leadership style of both George W. Bush and Barack H. Obama during the period of their first mandate regarding diplomatic and foreign affairs issues in Islamic countries. It will analyse if Muslim countries’ leaders changed the way they saw and interacted with the West, particularly the United States of America, in response to a different type of leadership. This work will also try to answer the question of whether the relationship between USA and Islamic countries can be reinvented by the diplomatic behaviour of a president and how media conveys these images and ideas in order to influence the homeland public as well as the public abroad. The present essay will examine different Islamic countries such as Iraq, with which USA is at war, and Iran, both of them antagonists of what America stands for, and Turkey an associated country of USA. The main research question guiding this analysis is: How do leadership styles and presidential charisma influence US Foreign Policy design and efficiency towards the Muslim world? This problematic will be viewed by several angles, for there a numerous theories that can help perceive this issue. As a result, both Presidents’ leadership style and charisma will be analysed. Afterwards, this dissertation will frame its most important notions giving them a conceptual delimitation, supplied by renowned authors of social sciences such as International Relations, Communications, Psychology, Sociology and Political Studies. The case study, with direct and indirect sources, will focus on relevant Islamic countries to US, some because are sworn enemies (Iraq and Iran) and others (Turkey) because are loyal to what the North America stands for. George W. Bush is a Republican who served two times as President of the USA, during which, America was offended with the most assertive and horrifying terrorist attack ever seen in US soil, in a day that forever more will live in infamy: 11th of September. On the other hand, Barack Obama is an African-American Democrat with Muslim roots of his own, who campaigned against war abroad but ended up involving his country, through NATO’S intervention, in another one (Libya). The dissertation will end with the conclusions to whatever results may be found in the pursuit of this question: Are leadership styles and charismatic behaviours an influence in efficiency and efficacy of the Foreign Affairs Policy towards Islamic Countries? In order to respond as accurately as possible all sources will be considered in this study, the statements made by the two Presidents during their first mandate, their official

The diploma thesis The White House Presents: The Media Image of Barack Obama examines the media presentation of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, through the official media channel of the White House. Five video recordings of President Obama's speeches are analyzed with a focus on linguistic, visual and auditory sign systems with the use of the qualitative semiotic content analysis. Before the analysis itself, an explanation of theoretical terms related mostly to the representation of reality is provided. On these grounds the analysis is then approached as a description of different means of achieving media construction of reality, to which both the President himself and the White House Office of Communications contribute. This Office is in charge of the content of the above-mentioned channel. To broaden the context, general information about the functioning of the President's media communication is included. The aim of this thesis is an interpretation of the communication tools presented by the White House media channel and the analysis of their symbolic meaning in order to explicate the process of a specific media image of the President coming into existence. Abstract:
Topics associated with the United States' foreign policy towards the European Union have become increasingly intense in expert discussions since the turn of the millennium. This is due to several factors, primarily including the strength of the two clusters, on two shores of the Atlantic ocean. The work on the topic of transatlantic relations is divided into four chapters, where the first chapter deals with the theory of regionalism, the historical development of relations between the United States and the European Union, and the European Community. The conclusion of the chapter then anchors foreign policy actors from the US perspective. However, the thesis aim is to compare two US presidents and their relations with the EU. The selected presidents are Barack Obama and Donald Trump, when the 2012-2018 period is a crucial time for work. The aim of the thesis is to find answers to several questions, when the main one is whether and what difference is in the approach of Barack Obama and Donald Trump towards the EU. The paper sets out several criteria by its research, which will then be compared from the perspective of two presidents in order to show whether and how the policies of two consecutive presidents differ in EU relations.

In this study, Janis Edwards and Carol Winkler’s method, based on Michael McGee’s ideograph, is applied to non-discursive forms in order to understand the extent to which these images can be understood as a representative form functioning ideographically. Artifacts for analysis include the 2008 Shepard Fairey Obama “PROGRESS” and “HOPE” images, related campaign graphics, and parodies, political and non-political, humorous and serious. Literature on visual rhetoric, the ideograph, and extensions of McGee’s ideograph to visual forms was reviewed. When the method was applied to the artifacts, the Obama “HOPE” image was found to be an example of a representative form. Additionally, the representative form was demonstrated to function ideographically in the parodied examples analyzed in this thesis. Opportunities for further study on the visual ideograph and additional artifacts were proposed.
