Abstract:
Matisoff (2003) reconstructs an “adjectival prefix” *gV-, based on work by Wolfenden (1929). As a result of surveying grammatical descriptions of more than 90 Tibeto-Burman languages, the present study provides evidence to reconstruct Matisoff’s adjectival prefix as a nominalizer whose functional range includes (but is not limited to) the adjectival marking. Evidence for the prefix is found in three major genetic subdivisions. Within Bradley’s (2002) Western branch, Baram (Newaric) has a particularly versatile nominalizer ki-~gi-, and Eastern Kiranti languages have *gV-…-pa nominalizing circumfixes. In Bradley’s Eastern branch, rGyalrongic languages have velar prefixes that function as the main nominalizers. Further, in DeLancey’s (2015) Central branch of Trans-Himalayan (Sino-Tibetan), we find reflexes of *gV- in many languages, most notably the versatile nominalizer kV- in Lamkang (Northwest Kuki-Chin). Other languages of the India-Myanmar border with unresolved phylogenetic status within Tibeto-Burman also have reflexes of *gV-, most prominently Karbi and Tangkhul (Konnerth 2012).

Abstract:
The reality of the language usage that exists in Indonesia is still apprehensive. If we observed, until now there are so many language usages in public spaces, both billboards and instructional boards still use foreign languages or a mix between Indonesian language and foreign languages. That reality of language is not relevant with the legislations which prevail in Indonesia because the legislations stipulate the preferential using of Indonesian language in public space. However, the legislations about language are not well known by the society, so they still prefer using the foreign languages. This research aimed to reveal the knowledge of rural Sundanese society in Garut and Cianjur Regency, West Java about the language regulations. This research used quantitative approach with survey method. The result showed that in general the knowledge of rural Sundanese society in Garut and Cianjur Regency, West Java about language regulations can be categorized not good because the average value only reached 34.25% of the ideal standard. Abstrak Kenyataan kebahasaan yang ada di Indonesia masih saja memprihatinkan. Jika diamati, hingga kini masih banyak pemakaian bahasa di ruang publik, baik papan nama maupun papan petunjuk, yang menggunakan bahasa asing atau campuran bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa asing. Kenyataan kebahasaan tersebut tidak sesuai dengan peraturan perundang-undangan yang berlaku di Indonesia karena peraturan perundang-undangan mengharuskan pengutamaan penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dalam ranah publik. Namun, peraturan perundang-undangan tentang kebahasaan tersebut sepertinya belum diketahui oleh masyarakat sehingga mereka masih mengutamakan bahasa asing. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan pengetahuan masyarakat Sunda pedesaan di Kabupaten Garut dan Cianjur Jawa Barat tentang peraturan kebahasaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode survei. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa secara umum pengetahuan masyarakat Sunda pedesaan di Kabupaten Garut dan Cianjur di Jawa Barat tentang peraturan kebahasaan dapat dikategorikan tidak baik sebab rata-ratanya baru mencapai 34,25% dari ideal.

Indonesia is an archipelago which consists of various ethnic groups. Each ethnic group has a regional language as its group identity. Regional languages ​​have a very important role in social and cultural life. The people of Umato'os Village who generally use the local language of Tetun as a means of interaction, the formation process that occurs in Tetun in Umato'os Village is a change if the root word undergoes a process of forming a Tetun word. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation and interviews. Data analysis using the equivalent method. To test the validity of the data, researchers used source triangulation. The result of this research is that Tetum is one of the regional languages ​​in the archipelago which is in the administrative area of ​​Malacca district, East Nusa Tenggara province. Tetun language has its own uniqueness in the affixation process, the affixation process in Tetun not only undergoes a change but also the affixation process has shown a person's activity. Language can be used as a means of communication that is alive and fostered by the Tetum-speaking community as well as a means of developing regional culture. Tetun also serves as the Mother Language (first language) for the Tetun speaking community.

Abstrak Tulisan ini mendeskripsikan bagaimana kondisi kontak bahasa dan bilingualisme di Desa Ngenyan Asa, Kabupaten Kutai Barat yang dapat mempengaruhi kebertahanan hidup atau vitalitas bahasa Tunjung. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik angket (kuesioner) dan wawancara. Adapun teknik analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis deskriptif dengan model interaktif yang terdiri atas reduksi data, sajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dan pembahasan, ditemukan adanya kontak bahasa antarpenutur di Ngenyan Asa, yaitu bahasa Tunjung dengan Benuaq, Melayu Kutai, Banjar, Jawa, dan Indonesia. Penyebabnya, yaitu perpindahan penduduk, adanya buruh atau pekerja dari suku lain, adanya hubungan budaya yang dekat (suku Tunjung dan Benuaq), dan adanya ‘kontak belajar’ di sekolah. Masyarakat penutur bahasa Tunjung di Desa Ngenyan Asa juga cenderung dwibahasawan atau bilingualisme. Mereka menguasai bahasa Tunjung, bahasa Indonesia, dan bahasa Benuaq. Adanya kontak bahasa dan bilingualisme ini dapat mengancam vitalitas bahasa Tunjung. Bahasa Tunjung dapat tergeser oleh penggunaaan bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa daerah lain yang dianggapnya lebih bergengsi, khususnya di kalangan generasi muda.Abstract This paper describes how the conditions of language contact and bilingualism in Ngenyan Asa Village, West Kutai district can affect the survival or vitality of the Tunjung language. Data collection techniques using questionnaires and interviews. The data analysis technique uses descriptive analysis techniques with an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of research and discussion, it was found that there were contact languages between speakers in Ngenyan Asa, namely Tunjung languages with Benuaq, Kutai Malay, Banjar, Javanese, and Indonesian. The reasons for this are the movement of the population, the existence of laborers or workers from other tribes, the existence of close cultural relations (the Tunjung and Benuaq tribes), and the 'learning contacts' at the school. The Tunjung language community in Ngenyan Asa Village also tends to be bilingual or bilingualism. They mastered Tunjung, Indonesian and Benuaq. The existence of language contact and bilingualism can threaten the vitality of the Tunjung language. The Tunjung language can be displaced by the use of Indonesian and other regional languages which it considers more prestigious, especially among the younger generation.

The bilingualism recently discovered in the Maya codices by Robert Wald and Alfonso Lacadena has parallels in the Colonial Maya Books of Chilam Balam, which show both linguistic and scriptural bilingualism — involving, on the one hand, the Maya and Spanish languages, and on the other, the logosyllabic and alphabetic scripts of these two cultures. The article explores the continuities and discontinuities in these language contact phenomena with respect to vocabulary, morphology, syntax, spelling conventions, style, and text format.

The speakers of Dayak Lengilu language are only four people in 2000. The condition of the language is almost extinct. In 1989, the speaker of Benggoi language were 350 people. According to society information, in Kecamatan Kalukku, Kabupaten Mamuju, Sulawesi Barat, there is Pakkado language which the condition is endangered. Local languages with few speakers and local languages whose condition is almost extinct or endangered should be prioritized for protection. Knowing the attitude of the society toward the local language is important in the revitalization program local languages usage. The mother tongue for most Indonesian citizens is the local language. The problem of this research is how the attitude of society toward their mother tongue, especially the Dayak Lengilu, Benggoi, and Pakkado people? The purpose of this research is to know the attitude of Dayak Lengilu, Benggoi, and Pakkado people towards their mother tongue. This research uses quantitative method. The data were collected by using questionnaire. Data processing is done quantitatively with simple statistics. Language attitude theory, measurement scale determining theories, questionnaire compiling, and questionnaire validity test theory were used in this research. The result shows that the attitude of Dayak Lengilu, Benggoi, and Pakkado language is positive. This study recommends that the results of this study can be used as a consideration in the local language protection program.

Abstract This paper discusses the agreement system of five Kuki-Chin (KC) languages of Barak valley, viz. Saihriem, Hrangkhol, Chorei, Sakachep, and Ronglong. The paper has an introduction, and five sections dedicated to agreement in different contructions: intransitive structures, transitive structures, agreement with the same person, agreement with ditransitive verbs, and agreement in hortative and imperative constructions. The discussion of agreement is further divided into subparts by paradigm; non-future, future and negative; and by languages. As in most KC languages, the Barak valley KC languages exhibit both preverbal and postverbal agreement clitics. The preverbal agreement clitics are homophonous with the possessive pronouns which occur before a noun. In intransitive constructions, the future affirmative paradigm has the same subject agreement clitics as the non-future paradigm. But unlike the non-future paradigm, the agreement clitics occur mostly after the verb and before the future tense marker in the future paradigm. In intransitive constructions, the postverbal agreement clitic shows up only in the future negative paradigm. As in the case of preverbal agreement clitics, the subject NP of an intransitive verb in the future negative paradigm can be dropped, and it can be recovered from its corresponding postverbal agreement clitics. Across the Barak valley KC languages, a transitive verb agrees with its object for the 1st person. Saihriem is the only language which shows number distinction for the second person object. If a verb takes more than one object, one with an inanimate direct object and the other with an indirect human object, the human indirect object takes precedence over the inanimate direct object for agreement. The Imperative construction takes the regular pre-verbal subject agreement marker for 1st and 3rd person in both the singular and plural form. On the contrary, the second person does not take any agreement marker. However, the number (singular and plural of the person) is distinguished in the imperative marker itself.

Abstract:
This study uses a case study research method with a qualitative study design. The aims of the study were to find out the domains of Acehnese language shifts in Langsa and the reasons why Acehnese teenagers are shifting their language. Five districts in Langsa, one of the cities in Aceh, Indonesia, became the research location. They were Langsa Kota, Langsa Barat, Langsa Timur, Langsa Baroe and Langsa Lama. The respondents were Acehnese young adults within the age range of 18 to 21 years old. There were 10 respondents from each district, making a total of 50 respondents. The instruments used in this study were observations, a questionnaire, and interviews. Simple statistics were used to analyse the questionnaire, meanwhile the data analysis for the observations and interviews followed an interactive model from Miles and Huberman, namely: data reduction, data display, verification of data, and conclusions. The results showed that the domains of education (30 respondents) and of friendship (27 respondents had the largest number of shifters. Meanwhile, the family domain had the least shifts, so it was concluded that shifts rarely occurred in this domain. Finally, there are three fundamental factors that influenced the shift: environment, habitual usage, and choice of language.

Abstract:
Minangkabau is an Austronesian, Indonesian-type language spoken in West Sumatra by approximately seven million speakers. Despite its large number of speakers and the spread of Minangkabau people throughout the Indonesian Archipelago, Minangkabau remains under-described when compared to other Indonesian-type languages like Javanese. This study seeks to improve current understanding about Minangkabau by describing its system of voice alternations and verb morphology. This study presents a novel analysis of the forms and functions of voice marking in Minangkabau, incorporating naturalistic data into the analysis as well as taking the findings of recent typological and theoretical studies of Austronesian languages into consideration. The study makes use of naturalistic, conversational and narrative data from a database maintained by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Field Station in Padang. The study also makes use of elicited data collected in Perth and during fieldwork in Padang. Naturalistic and more formal, elicited Minangkabau data reveals different kinds of linguistic patterns, therefore this study makes a distinction between Colloquial Minangkabau and Standard Minangkabau. The study concludes that Minangkabau has a pragmatically motivated voice system encoded by the alternation between active voice, passive voice and the pasif semu construction. In addition, the study concludes that Minangkabau also has a conceptually motivated voice system that is encoded by a series of semantic and lexical/derivational affixes (ta-, pa-, and ba-) which show how the action originates and develops. The Minangkabau applicatives -an and -i are for the most part valency changing devices but operate within both the pragmatic and conceptual domains of Minangkabau voice. The active voice marker maN- also operates in both pragmatic and conceptual domains whereas the use of the passive voice marker di- is primarily motivated by pragmatic and syntactic factors. This analysis is supported by the finding that di- is a morphosyntactic clitic whereas the conceptual voice markers are affixes and have mainly lexico-semantic properties.

Uppsatsen behandlar om och på vilket sätt det faktum att franska talas i fler länder än Frankrike är uppmärksammat i kursplaner och textböcker i franska för gymnasiet. Jag har i detta sammanhang använt termen la francophonie för att beteckna franska talad utanför Frankrike, trots att Frankrike egentligen ingår i detta begrepp.

Vad det gäller kursplaner kan jag konstatera att de är mycket vagt formulerade, men att det är tydligt att man vill att eleverna skall lära sig om de kulturer och länder i vilka franskan förekommer. Eftersom läroböcker kan ses som en form av konkretisering av kursmålen har jag studerat tolv av dem för att se hur la francophonie behandlas i dem. Jag studerade hur många texter i läroböckerna som behandlar la francophonie, men även på vilket sätt texterna är formulerade. Det visade sig att de flesta böckerna innehöll texter som direkt eller indirekt behandlar franskan som ett globalt fenomen. Det var också tydligt att de flesta texterna gick bortom nationella klichéer för att istället fokusera på individers erfarenheter, något som är nödvändigt eftersom nationella identiteter bara är sociala konstruktioner. Det framkom även att de äldre läroböckerna hade ett mer eurocentriskt perspektiv, medan de nyare lät personer från till exempel le Maghreb komma till tals direkt. Många texter behandlade även de problem och möjligheter som skapas av det faktum att fler och fler personer befinner sig mellan flera kulturer.

Abstrakt

Syftet med studien var att undersöka om det finns en utveckling i boksamtal från förskola till skola. Ett annat syfte med studien var att undersöka hur pedagogerna arbetade med boksamtal i ett utvalt rektorsområde. För att uppfylla syftet genomfördes intervjuer med pedagoger och lärare i förskola och skola. Genom intervjuerna söktes en klarhet i hur pedagogerna och lärarna planerar, lägger upp och genomför boksamtal i de olika verksamheterna. För att få en tydligare bild hur boksamtalen genomfördes togs det del av ett färdiginspelat material, där studerades det hur boksamtalen gick till i både förskola och skola. Materialet som framkom under studien ställdes sedan mot tidigare forskning och teorier kring samspel, språk och miljö och tolkades utifrån en hermeneutisk ansats.

 

Resultatet som framkom var att både pedagoger och lärare arbetar på liknande sätt och att boksamtalen genomförs på ungefär samma tillvägagångssätt i de olika verksamheterna. Studien visar även att barn och elever utvecklar språket, samspelet och att våga tala inför andra.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine how preschool teachers work with an argumentative and alternative communication (ACC) and the importance of language tools for children’s language development. The study also aims to illuminate how the work with ACC is visible in the preschools physical activities and in the documentations as well as the importance it brings. To receive adequate information, interviews were held with active educationalist on how they observe ACC as stimulating tools for language development, if there are any differences in the use of language support depending on different situations and how the active work with language support is noticeable. The results among the interviewed preschool teachers shows a positive attitude towards the use of language support and that the methods are helpful and useful when educating the children. Results also shows that there is a common thread in the documentation work that extends from the work in groups with children in preschools up to the preschool managers.

Abstract:
This paper speculates about the origin of the overall use of the form iko in Inland Swahili. Its functional scope comprises predication, identification, location, existence, and association. In Standard Swahili, the primary function of iko is to express the locative relation of nouns belonging to noun class 4 or 9. For the expression of identification various other means are used. As Inland Swahili is mostly acquired as a second language it will be argued here that the functional expansion of iko might be due to the crosslinguistic influence of the first language. However, first languages, such as Maasai, exhibit a formal distinction between location and predication. A conceptual merger of both functions in the second language is more likely to occur when the first language contains only one obligatory copula expressing both concepts. This obligatory copula can be found in many Indo-European languages, e.g. English or Hindi. Until today Indians speaking Swahili are characterised by the frequent usage of iko, a fact which points to the view that the overall use of iko could be due to substrate influence of Hindi.

Den här språksociologiska undersökningen tar reda på hur individer anpassar sitt språkliga uttryck i samband med toalettbesök i privat, offentligt och högtidligt sammanhang, samt deras grad av medvetenhet och normanpassning i känsliga sammanhang. Detta har gjorts genom en enkätstudie där totalt 362 respondenter svarat på både öppna och slutna frågor, vilket har gett både kvantitativa och kvalitativa data. Det empiriska materialet har efter bearbetning jämförts med tidigare forskning och teoretiska perspektiv, vilket utmynnat i resultaten att de allra flesta ackommoderar efter sammanhang och är medvetna om hur de ackommoderar i formella sammanhang. Ytterligare en tendens resultatet visar är att det postmoderna samhället påverkat samhällsutvecklingen mot en mer öppen kommunikationsstil där relationer skapas och samarbete eftersträvas.
This sociolinguistic research examines how individuals adapt their linguistic expression in relation to toilet visits in private, public and formal contexts, as well as their degree of awareness and accommodation in sensitive contexts. A total of 362 respondents, have answered a questionnaire with both open and closed questions, which has given both quantitative and qualitative data. After processing, the empirical material has been compared with former research and theoretical perspectives, concluding that a majority of the respondents accommodate according to context and are aware of how they accommodate in formal contexts. The result also tends to that the postmodern society has influenced the social progress towards a more open style of communication in which relationships are created and cooperation is sought.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to examine which attitudes and experiences teachers have around the wide text concept, which is found in the course plan for the Swedish subject, and to find out which function films have in their teaching. The starting point of the paper’s theoretical part is the Swedish subject’s course plans and current research concerning the wide text concept and film in teaching. In order to achieve the formulated aim, qualitative interviews have been performed with three Swedish teachers active in the later years of compulsory-school.

The result shows that there are divided opinions of the actual meaning of the concept. However the three teachers agree that film has something to enrich the teaching of the Swedish language and they are for most part positive to using film in their teaching. There are certain differences as to how film is practically used in teaching by the three interviewed teachers, but film is used largely in three ways as also the researcher Christina Olin-Scheller has concluded: as illustration, as complement and as comparison. The three interviewed teachers also mean that the students, for most parts, are positive to using film as a teaching method and that lessons using film function satisfactory.

As part of a larger, three-year long European project, Franziska reflected on her experiences in designing and implementing age-appropriate, immersive learning experiences in the virtual village of Chatterdale in OpenSim. Thirteen-year-old German and Norwegian students learning English as a target language engaged in collaborative goal-driven actions, task-oriented activities, and verbal interactions in a quest to solve a mystery involving extraterrestrials and the local residents' disappearance. Building on Barab, Gresalfi, and Arici's (2009) conceptualization of game-oriented environments as transformational activities, the focus was placed on investigating how the emerging affordances can empower learners and enact opportunities to actively participate in these game-driven learning experiences and mold the content and context. The study illustrated that the design of this virtual Chatterdale science fiction scenario was student-instigated, while students' quest to unravel the mystery afforded opportunities for active involvement and collaborative actions, engagement in verbal exchanges, and interaction with content and context.

According to Barak and English (2002), the use of Internet-based psychological tests is an extension of computerized testing which emerged in the 1980s (p. 65). As with computerized testing, online psychological tests provide almost instant results since Likert-style questions can be scored by the computer without additional human intervention. Additionally, customized profiles can be presented along with the resulting scores, enabling the user to draw additional meaning from the selected instrument. An additional benefit of Internet-based measures is the potential for web sites to serve as clearinghouses containing a myriad of instruments, available to online users for free or on a subscription basis. As a result, numerous online repositories have been developed which offer a variety of psychological tests, ranging from fully validated instruments to individually-designed scales. One of the more popular test libraries is the Queendom.com site run by Plumeus, Inc. Since its founding in 1996, over 90 million people have completed over 400 million tests in nine different languages at the Queendom web site (http://www.queendom.com). According to the Queendom home page, the site contains “114 professionally developed and validated psychological tests, 111 Just-for-Fun tests, [and] 230 mind games and quizzes.” The five most popular psychological tests are the Classical Intelligence Test, the Self-Esteem Test, the Emotional Intelligence Test, the Communication Skills Test, and the Type-A Personality Test. Just-for-Fun test include such measures as the Snob Test, the Blind Date Test, and the Party Guest Test. Mind games and quizzes include puzzles, math problems, memory games, and trivia tests.

Abstract:
It is not possible to determine the exact number of indigenous languages of Sarawak, one reason being the dialect-language dichotomy, as some isolects has not been ascertained. Ethnic labels may not reflect a linguistically homogenous group. That is to say that the language varieties spoken by an ethnic group may have a dialectal relationship with one another, or they may be heterogeneous, which means they are mutually unintelligible. This paper reports on the results of a lexicostatistic study that examines linguistic affiliation of a group of languages found along the Tinjar-Baram river basin, namely Berawan, Bakong, Narom, Kiput, Dali,’ and Miriek, and also their links with Kenyah Long Terawan, Lepo’ Tau and Belait in nearby Brunei. The paper also traces their historical past and describes how languages spoken by these ethnolinguistic groups have become affiliated to each other. For some reason or another, e.g. migration in search of greener pastures, internal rivalry or/and conversion to modern religions, these indigenous communities are forced to move away from their original speech communities, and they call themselves by different names in their new localities, usually after the name of a river or a mountain. These factors and categorisation on the basis of similar cultural attributes have caused misinterpretation of the identity of the indigenous groups in the past. The paper will clarify some of the misconceptions regarding the ethnolinguistic groups in the region.

ABSTRACT Background: Inter-professional health care providers play an essential role in the treatment of Low Birth Weight (LBW) cases. Collaboration between doctors, nurses, midwives and social service providers is significant for the care of LBW. This study aimed to find out the role and barriers of inter-professional health practice collaboration in LBW care cases. Subjects and Method: A scoping review was conducted by selecting published articles years 2004-2019, from PubMed, EBSCO, Willey, Science Direct databases. The inclusion criteria were full text and using English or Indonesian language. Keywords used low birth weight, delay of referral, health workers, and inter-professional collaboration. The data were analyzed by PRISMA flow diagram. Results: 9 articles were selected from 2,407. There were 2 main issues related to low birth weight management, including role and barrier of inter-professional collaboration. Common barriers to inter-professional collaboration were lack of knowledge, health personnel abstinence, delay of referral, and poor access to health service. Conclusion: Role and low barrier of inter-professional collaboration are essential to provide good LBW management. ABSTRACT Background: Iron deficiency anemia is a global health problem that affects children, women and the elderly, and it is also a common comorbidity under a variety of medical conditions. This study aimed to determine the role of health workers in the practice of adolescent girls with iron deficiency anemia. Subjects and Method: This was a scoping review conducted was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selection; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The search included PubMed, ProQuest, Wiley, Science Direct. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2008 and 2019. The data were selected by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Seven articles were selected from 316 articles, 25 duplicated articles and 284 excluded articles. Several important points were obtained, namely doctor diagnose and provide therapy, haematologist analyzing blood sample results, nutritionist educate nutrition of female adolescent, nurses provide care and recording adolescent health status, and laboratory staff taking blood for analysis. ABSTRACT Background: Impaired growth and development of children remains a serious problem globally. The role of the family, especially the support and participation of parents are the important factors in monitoring the growth and development of infants/ toddlers. This study aimed to determine the effect of family support on the growth and development of infants/ toddlers. Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at Kragilan Village, Mojolaban, Sukoharjo, Central Java in November 2018. The study subjects were total of 115 mothers with children aged 1-60 month. Multistage cluster sampling technique was conducted. Dependent variable was growth and development of children. Independent variable was family support. The data for family support was collected by questionnaire. The data for growth of infants/ toddlers was collected by assessing growth chart (monitoring whether weight gain or loss from previous month), assessing length/height-for-age (normal height or stunted), head circumference measurement (macrocephalic/ microcephalic/ normocephalic), and assessing teething chart (erupts/ loss of teeth in accordance with age or not). The data for development of infants/ toddlers was collected by evaluating the gross motor, fine motor, language, and social skills based on child development pre-screening questionnaire. Results: Good family support increases growth (b= 0.895; p <0.001) and development (b= 0.337; p <0.001) of infants/ toddlers.
