Abstract:
Abstract Babar Island is corn production center in District of Babar Islands. Maize is the dominant food commodities and a major food source for the community. Corn is the dominant crop commodity in Barbar Island and become staple food for the community. The farming are traditional and subsystems to meet farmers household needs and the excess (if any) will be sold but in very limited quantities. However the sales purpose is not commercial but just to meet the households needs that can not be substituted by other goods and only by few farmers if necessary. The farming is carried out on slash and burn dry land by polyculture cropping pattern that is combination of annual and perrenial crops. This study aimed to examine the feasibility and profitability of corn farming in Barbar island, using survey methods with stratified random sampling technique. The results showed that the cost of corn production in Barbar Island, district of Barbar Islands, South West Maluku Regency is consisted of fixed cost and variable cost. The fixed cost components is including : equipment depreciation costs and land rent costs. The variable costs includes : inputs costs (seeds, fertilizers, chemical) and labor costs. Variable costs is the largest cost component for corn farming. Corn farming is profitable and viable, as indicated by the average income Rp.2.647.396 compared to the average cost incurred by farmers Rp.2.520.934 and BC ratio of 1.05. This means that the production costs of Rp.2.520.934 will generate benefit 1.05 times of the cost.

Abstract:
Are we witnessing a decline of war, the spread of violence or both? The growing number of wars and genocids conveys the impression of uncontrolled violence. Is there any possibility to overcome belligerent conflicts between states? Do imply social, technological, cultural or even anthropological changes moments which could shift the ground of state’s rivalry towards non-belligerent relationships? Peace trough interdependence and democracy seems possible. The priorities of modern states cannot be thought on the basis of attributes like sovereignty and territoriality. The peaceful 'bourgeois islands' not only bring about prosperity but increasing social exclusion as well. New phenomenon of ethnicism and religiosity often originate from, around and in their midst. Threats arising from terrorism and racial or religious riots are the consequences. There are two options, the author considers as possible: an "embourgeoisement" of the "barbarians" or a "barbarisation of the bourgeois". Or is there a new political form emerging?

Abstract:
This thesis falls within the realm of social studies, specifically social studies in literature, and attempts to establish whether the sub-genre of fantasy literature known as sword and sorcery contains elements which resemble the tenets of fascism. Robert E. Howard is considered the progenitor of the sub-genre and his stories have an influence on the nature of sword and sorcery literature today, 70 years after his death. Howards creation of the sub-genre coincides with the spread of fascist ideologies around the world in the 1930s and the study attempts a societal mirroring analysis of Howards texts. With the help of an analytical model based on fascism expert Robert O. Paxtons so-called mobilizing passions of fascism, Howards stories of Conan the barbarian have been deconstructed and analyzed. The study shows clearly that certain elements of the stories do indeed correspond to basic ideological elements of fascism. However, the results of the study are inconclusive as to whether this indicates that sword and sorcery was inspired by the widespread surge of fascism which occurred at roughly the same time, or if they simply sprang from the same sociocultural soil. The similarities are tempered by the issue of context and the presence of numerous exceptions. Further studies with different scientific tools and parameters would be required to establish the nature of a possible connection between fascist ideology and sword and sorcery based on the similarities found.

Abstract:
Visceral leishmaniasis is a disease caused by intracellular parasites of macrophages: Leishmania donovani and Leishmania infantum. They are transmitted to their mammalian host by various sand flies species. In humans, parasitism by these parasites remains asymptomatic in most cases. However infection is uncontrolled in some subjects leading to an intense multiplication of the parasite in the viscera and to a life threatening disease. Susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis is complex and depends on host, parasite and environmental factors. In mice, it was shown that host genetic factors are involved in the control of experimental infections. The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to analyse the risk-factors for visceral leishmaniasis in an outbreak that occurred in a population living in a village of Eastern Sudan. We identified several environmental factors that were probably involved in determining exposure to the parasite in the first years of the epidemic. However, at the end of the outbreak, when most of the village inhabitants were exposed to Leishmania, the main risk-factors for disease were host factors, notably the ethnic group. Furthermore, the visceral leishmaniasis cases were not randomly distributed in the village but were clustered in some large families. A genetic study carried out on affected sib-pairs evidenced that a major locus on chromosome 22 was involved in disease susceptibility. This genome scan also suggests that two other loci on chromosome 2 (among which the NRAMP1 locus) are involved. This study shows for the first time that in human as in mice genetic factors are involved in susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis. Furthermore the genetic loci identified in mice only seem to play a minor role in the genetic control identified in our population. The identification, of the gene(s) underlying visceral leishmaniasis susceptibility should therefore improve our understanding of the host-parasite relationship in human. Another aspect of this work was to evaluate the predictive value of serology for visceral leishmaniasis. Our result clearly showed that, affected individuals as well as subjects who controlled Leishmania infection, mounted a high Leishmania-specific antibody response during the outbreak. Therefore in this sudanese population, high Leishmania-specific antibody responses are of poor prognostic value unlike what is observed in Brazil or in the Mediterranean area. Another implication of this observation is that in Sudan, particularly during outbreaks of the disease, serological tools such as ELISA or DAT may not be reliable for the diagnostic of visceral leishmaniasis

Abstract:
Pier Paolo Pasolini, undoubtedly one of the foremost literary and intellectual figures of our time, has been subjected to a somewhat misguided assessment of his oeuvre. It is a criticism which forces the eclectic poet into too rigid a category, which has from the outset discarded or at best undervalued not just multiple readings of his work but also his artistic innovations. After a remarkable period of indifference there has been a revival of interest in this writer which can be seen by the increasing number of publications which often confuse biography with literature and favour the former without any particular reason and neglect the merits of the writings themselves. It is therefore with a need to revaluate aspects of Pasolini’s work, liberating it from misconceived interpretations, that this paper will look at the recognition of the theme of the barbarian, or better the “marvellous barbarian” as Pasolini himself describes it, in the lyric and narrative, linking this directly to the writing itself and avoiding any preconceived ideas. This research has its roots in the famous study by Fabien S. Gérard published in 1981, Pasolini ou le mythe de la barbarie, which surveys Pasolini’s cinematic work. Without negating the importance of the barbarian in the films and how this is thematically revealed in its cinematic interpretation, it is necessary to go travel backwards before the history of cinema itself. The aim of this work is to reassess Pasolini’s multifaceted universe of the barbarian examining the poetical and narrative (not the dialectal) body of work which includes the interrelationship between the different artistic forms blended together, the numerous essays, reviews and when necessary the transcriptions of the screenplays and theatrical texts spanning the period between 1950 to 1975. It is between this period that the works are enriched and they renew the “simple” primitivism of Friuli, without being restricted to the periphery of Rome. In order not to betray Pasolini’s intentions it has been better to proceed taking two parallel courses. Firstly, the works of the writers Pasolini mentions himself or alludes to have been read. From this emerges a rich array of interesting personalities and literary tastes, ranging from the decadent and Dionysian influences which go on through the more mature work with its sensitivity towards the fascination of the irrational (mainly Rimbaud and Kavafis) including the ancient poverty of Belli, Tommaseo with his “exquisite coarseness”, as well as the inspirational muse, Morante, the mystery of Banti’s Godoari and Vico’s impressions and the magisterial influences of Leopardi. Furthermore, the opportunity to have access to Pasolini’s personal library, his workshop, preserved in Rome by his heir Graziella Chiarcossi has turned out to be essential for a real comparison between what he had read and his own created works. This type of research has proved to be fascinating because of the care Pasolini took in writing his own marginalia on the essays he was reading and based on this it has been possible to make connections between essays and literature. The anthropological passion, able to capture very well the sense of the primitive, wild and ancestral is reshaped by Pasolini according to the necessities of literature. A great part of this work has attempted to examine the motifs of the barbarian in a concrete and objective manner as it appears in Pasolini’s oeuvre, even starting from the etymology of the word. In this way a large amount of heterogeneous material has been put into a cohesive form and separated into the main themes which are the terminology chosen by the author from the exoticism of some lexical tessere to particular “manias” able to express the yearning for regression, up to the compilation of a “Pasolini Bestiary”; the language and its forms both verbal and of the body; Africa as a symbol of all the Souths of the world and finally the barbarian as a symbol of rebellion against the usual forms of literary expression, by means of new forms of communication. Examining his oeuvre from these perspectives, besides allowing one to address questions still open, has shown the reoccurring theme of the barbarian over time and in unimaginable variations which reveal an organic dimension, oxymoronically flowing with a dualism, positive and negative, of meanings. This has allowed one to read Pasolini’s writing in a refreshing way throwing new insights into the texts which have still much to reveal.

Abstract:
Eugenio Barba is the founder and director of the Norwegian theater Odin, pedagogue, theorist of contemporary theater. She is part of the cohort of directors who have contributed to the creation of the modern lexicon of acting expressiveness. Revealing the cross-cultural aspects and based on contemporary research, Barba aims to reveal the universal acting components, the origins of which he finds in the unity of their spiritual and psychophysiological aspect. He tends to the expressiveness of the actor born of his full human potential. The formation of the language of acting expressiveness in Barba’s creation is indispensable for one of the brilliant tendencies of the development of European theatrical art in the second half of the twentieth century — the movement to theatrical universality.

Williams, Cameron. Channel Islands National Park: Terrestrial vegetation monitoring annual report - 2020. National Park Service, August 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299696.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents the data collected in 2020 as part of the long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring program at Channel Islands National Park. The purpose of this monitoring program is to document long-term trends in the park’s vegetation communities. Data are collected from 30-m-long transects using a point-line intercept method. In the past, each transect was sampled annually. However, beginning in 2012 the program began adding randomly located transects to improve the representativeness of the sampling, and transitioned to a rotating panel design. Now only a core subset of the transects are surveyed annually. Non-core transects are assigned to one of four panels, each of which is surveyed once every four years. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused a global pandemic that prevented field data collection from most of the transects scheduled for 2020. As a result, just 29 of the 127 transects scheduled were visited, distributed as follows: Santa Barbara Island (n = 18), Santa Cruz Island (n = 11). The small size of this 2020 dataset offers limited comparisons to previous years. The program also planned to install 19 new transects on Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands to complete the probabilistic component of the study design (Tiszler et al. 2016a), but the safety response to COVID-19 did not permit these installations. Key 2020 results and interpretation: For the transects visited at both islands in 2020, a long-term decline in mean absolute cover, measured as the mean number of taxa intersecting each point along a transect, was apparent. Annual rainfall correlated positively with mean absolute cover of vegetation. Six vegetation communities were visited at Santa Barbara Island compared to nine at Santa Cruz Island, despite the smaller number of transects surveyed at the latter. Mean absolute cover at both islands together averaged 87%, with native plants covering 44% and non-natives covering 39%. Among vegetation communities, mean absolute cover ranged from a high of 137% in a Lyonothamnus grove to a low of 32% in a riparian community where few plants were encountered along one transect. Mean absolute cover was higher at Santa Cruz Island (105%) than Santa Barbara Island (77%), and mean absolute native cover followed the same pattern (57% vs 36%). For both islands combined, mean richness per transect was 11 taxa. Compared to Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island supported higher overall mean species richness (14 vs 9 taxa) and higher species evenness (0.70 vs 0.55). Santa Cruz Island’s higher absolute cover, higher native species cover, higher species richness, and higher species evenness indicate that its vegetation is in better overall condition compared to Santa Barbara Island, and that the rate of recovery after overgrazing is faster at Santa Cruz Island than Santa Barbara Island.
