Abstract:
Are we witnessing a decline of war, the spread of violence or both? The growing number of wars and genocids conveys the impression of uncontrolled violence. Is there any possibility to overcome belligerent conflicts between states? Do imply social, technological, cultural or even anthropological changes moments which could shift the ground of state’s rivalry towards non-belligerent relationships? Peace trough interdependence and democracy seems possible. The priorities of modern states cannot be thought on the basis of attributes like sovereignty and territoriality. The peaceful 'bourgeois islands' not only bring about prosperity but increasing social exclusion as well. New phenomenon of ethnicism and religiosity often originate from, around and in their midst. Threats arising from terrorism and racial or religious riots are the consequences. There are two options, the author considers as possible: an "embourgeoisement" of the "barbarians" or a "barbarisation of the bourgeois". Or is there a new political form emerging?

Abstract:
This thesis falls within the realm of social studies, specifically social studies in literature, and attempts to establish whether the sub-genre of fantasy literature known as sword and sorcery contains elements which resemble the tenets of fascism. Robert E. Howard is considered the progenitor of the sub-genre and his stories have an influence on the nature of sword and sorcery literature today, 70 years after his death. Howards creation of the sub-genre coincides with the spread of fascist ideologies around the world in the 1930s and the study attempts a societal mirroring analysis of Howards texts. With the help of an analytical model based on fascism expert Robert O. Paxtons so-called mobilizing passions of fascism, Howards stories of Conan the barbarian have been deconstructed and analyzed. The study shows clearly that certain elements of the stories do indeed correspond to basic ideological elements of fascism. However, the results of the study are inconclusive as to whether this indicates that sword and sorcery was inspired by the widespread surge of fascism which occurred at roughly the same time, or if they simply sprang from the same sociocultural soil. The similarities are tempered by the issue of context and the presence of numerous exceptions. Further studies with different scientific tools and parameters would be required to establish the nature of a possible connection between fascist ideology and sword and sorcery based on the similarities found.

Abstract:
Visceral leishmaniasis is a disease caused by intracellular parasites of macrophages: Leishmania donovani and Leishmania infantum. They are transmitted to their mammalian host by various sand flies species. In humans, parasitism by these parasites remains asymptomatic in most cases. However infection is uncontrolled in some subjects leading to an intense multiplication of the parasite in the viscera and to a life threatening disease. Susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis is complex and depends on host, parasite and environmental factors. In mice, it was shown that host genetic factors are involved in the control of experimental infections. The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to analyse the risk-factors for visceral leishmaniasis in an outbreak that occurred in a population living in a village of Eastern Sudan. We identified several environmental factors that were probably involved in determining exposure to the parasite in the first years of the epidemic. However, at the end of the outbreak, when most of the village inhabitants were exposed to Leishmania, the main risk-factors for disease were host factors, notably the ethnic group. Furthermore, the visceral leishmaniasis cases were not randomly distributed in the village but were clustered in some large families. A genetic study carried out on affected sib-pairs evidenced that a major locus on chromosome 22 was involved in disease susceptibility. This genome scan also suggests that two other loci on chromosome 2 (among which the NRAMP1 locus) are involved. This study shows for the first time that in human as in mice genetic factors are involved in susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis. Furthermore the genetic loci identified in mice only seem to play a minor role in the genetic control identified in our population. The identification, of the gene(s) underlying visceral leishmaniasis susceptibility should therefore improve our understanding of the host-parasite relationship in human. Another aspect of this work was to evaluate the predictive value of serology for visceral leishmaniasis. Our result clearly showed that, affected individuals as well as subjects who controlled Leishmania infection, mounted a high Leishmania-specific antibody response during the outbreak. Therefore in this sudanese population, high Leishmania-specific antibody responses are of poor prognostic value unlike what is observed in Brazil or in the Mediterranean area. Another implication of this observation is that in Sudan, particularly during outbreaks of the disease, serological tools such as ELISA or DAT may not be reliable for the diagnostic of visceral leishmaniasis

Grandelis, Alessandra.

Abstract:
Pier Paolo Pasolini, undoubtedly one of the foremost literary and intellectual figures of our time, has been subjected to a somewhat misguided assessment of his oeuvre. It is a criticism which forces the eclectic poet into too rigid a category, which has from the outset discarded or at best undervalued not just multiple readings of his work but also his artistic innovations. After a remarkable period of indifference there has been a revival of interest in this writer which can be seen by the increasing number of publications which often confuse biography with literature and favour the former without any particular reason and neglect the merits of the writings themselves. It is therefore with a need to revaluate aspects of Pasolini’s work, liberating it from misconceived interpretations, that this paper will look at the recognition of the theme of the barbarian, or better the “marvellous barbarian” as Pasolini himself describes it, in the lyric and narrative, linking this directly to the writing itself and avoiding any preconceived ideas. This research has its roots in the famous study by Fabien S. Gérard published in 1981, Pasolini ou le mythe de la barbarie, which surveys Pasolini’s cinematic work. Without negating the importance of the barbarian in the films and how this is thematically revealed in its cinematic interpretation, it is necessary to go travel backwards before the history of cinema itself. The aim of this work is to reassess Pasolini’s multifaceted universe of the barbarian examining the poetical and narrative (not the dialectal) body of work which includes the interrelationship between the different artistic forms blended together, the numerous essays, reviews and when necessary the transcriptions of the screenplays and theatrical texts spanning the period between 1950 to 1975. It is between this period that the works are enriched and they renew the “simple” primitivism of Friuli, without being restricted to the periphery of Rome. In order not to betray Pasolini’s intentions it has been better to proceed taking two parallel courses. Firstly, the works of the writers Pasolini mentions himself or alludes to have been read. From this emerges a rich array of interesting personalities and literary tastes, ranging from the decadent and Dionysian influences which go on through the more mature work with its sensitivity towards the fascination of the irrational (mainly Rimbaud and Kavafis) including the ancient poverty of Belli, Tommaseo with his “exquisite coarseness”, as well as the inspirational muse, Morante, the mystery of Banti’s Godoari and Vico’s impressions and the magisterial influences of Leopardi. Furthermore, the opportunity to have access to Pasolini’s personal library, his workshop, preserved in Rome by his heir Graziella Chiarcossi has turned out to be essential for a real comparison between what he had read and his own created works. This type of research has proved to be fascinating because of the care Pasolini took in writing his own marginalia on the essays he was reading and based on this it has been possible to make connections between essays and literature. The anthropological passion, able to capture very well the sense of the primitive, wild and ancestral is reshaped by Pasolini according to the necessities of literature. A great part of this work has attempted to examine the motifs of the barbarian in a concrete and objective manner as it appears in Pasolini’s oeuvre, even starting from the etymology of the word. In this way a large amount of heterogeneous material has been put into a cohesive form and separated into the main themes which are the terminology chosen by the author from the exoticism of some lexical tessere to particular “manias” able to express the yearning for regression, up to the compilation of a “Pasolini Bestiary”; the language and its forms both verbal and of the body; Africa as a symbol of all the Souths of the world and finally the barbarian as a symbol of rebellion against the usual forms of literary expression, by means of new forms of communication. Examining his oeuvre from these perspectives, besides allowing one to address questions still open, has shown the reoccurring theme of the barbarian over time and in unimaginable variations which reveal an organic dimension, oxymoronically flowing with a dualism, positive and negative, of meanings. This has allowed one to read Pasolini’s writing in a refreshing way throwing new insights into the texts which have still much to reveal.

Abstract:
The DOMON domain is a domain widespread in nature, predicted to fold in a β-sandwich structure. In plants, AIR12 is constituted by a single DOMON domain located in the apoplastic space and is GPI-modified for anchoring to the plasma membrane. Arabidopsis thaliana AIR12 has been heterologously expressed as a recombinant protein (recAtAIR12) in Pichia pastoris. Spectrophotometrical analysis of the purified protein showed that recAtAir12 is a cytochrome b. RecAtAIR12 is highly glycosylated, it is reduced by ascorbate, superoxide and naftoquinones, oxidised by monodehydroascorbate and oxygen and insensitive to hydrogen peroxide. The addition of recAtAIR12 to permeabilized plasma membranes containing NADH, FeEDTA and menadione, caused a statistically significant increase in hydroxyl radicals as detected by electron paramagnetic resonance. In these conditions, recAtAIR12 has thus a pro-oxidant role. Interestingly, AIR12 is related to the cytochrome domain of cellobiose dehydrogenase which is involved in lignin degradation, possibly via reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In Arabidopsis the Air12 promoter is specifically activated at sites where cell separations occur and ROS, including •OH, are involved in cell wall modifications. air12 knock-out plants infected with Botrytis cinerea are more resistant than wild-type and air12 complemented plants. Also during B. cinerea infection, cell wall modifications and ROS are involved. Our results thus suggest that AIR12 could be involved in cell wall modifying reactions by interacting with ROS and ascorbate. CyDOMs are plasma membrane redox proteins of plants that are predicted to contain an apoplastic DOMON fused with a transmembrane cytochrome b561 domain. CyDOMs have never been purified nor characterised. The trans-membrane portion of a soybean CyDOM was expressed in E. coli but purification could not be achieved. The DOMON domain was expressed in P. pastoris and shown to be itself a cytochrome b that could be reduced by ascorbate.

Barber, Alana Carlisle. "Considerations for rural residents undergoing radiation therapy for cancer treatment." Thesis, Montana State University, 2012. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2012/barber/BarberA0512.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Cancer is a disease that will affect roughly one in three Americans in their lifetime. Of those who choose to undergo cancer treatment, approximately 60% will be treated with radiation therapy (XRT). In order to contain health care delivery costs, specialty medical centers that offer XRT are often centralized, making access to necessary treatment difficult for rural residents. Researchers have identified accessibility to services, required travel, being away from family and friends, locating accommodations during treatment, financial burdens, emotional stress, quality of life, and treatment options as burdens to this population. Research has been conducted in other areas of the world to identify commonalities amongst rural residents undergoing XRT but no such studies have been conducted within the United States. The purpose of this study was to identify considerations for rural residents who have been diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing external beam radiation therapy for treatment. A convenience sample of rural residents who were currently or had in the last year received external beam XRT for cancer treatment at a regional cancer treatment center in south central Montana were asked to participate in this study. Surveys were mailed anonymously to 49 persons meeting study criteria. Twenty one surveys containing demographic, multiple choice, and Likert scale questions focusing on travel, lifestyle changes and accommodation during XRT, the financial implications and psychosocial significance of XRT, and treatment decisions were completed and returned. Responses to the survey were entered into a database where descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. The results suggest that travel and distance to services continues to be a challenge for most rural residents, that rural residents often alter lifestyles and believe costs are greater for them during XRT. Data also showed that participants did not base treatment decisions on cost or distance nor did they feel they were overly stressed or anxious during XRT. Implications for nursing include identification of variables associated with a rural lifestyle, increasing education for rural persons, and being aware of available resources to assist persons undergoing XRT for cancer treatment.

Barber, Loren Mickelle. "Distribution, characterization, and dietary risk assessment of indigenous salts in Mongolia's Darhad Valley." Thesis, Montana State University, 2008. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2008/barber/BarberL0808.pdf.

Abstract:
Natural salt deposits around the world are used as human and livestock dietary mineral sources. The nomadic herders of the Darhad Valley, in northern Mongolia, harvest the precipitate that forms around saline lakes throughout their valley. The precipitate is termed hujir, and the main harvest location is Tukh. Darhad people are concerned about the declining amount of a hujir in the Tukh precipitate area and are curious about possible health effects related to hujir consumption. These studies focus on formulating the best management practices for sustainable hujir harvest by evaluating factors influencing the formation of hujir, and by establishing the mineralogy and ionic concentrations in Tukh soil, water, and hujir through chemical and spatial analyses. A dietary risk assessment was also accomplished by obtaining consumption rates through interviews, and determining exposure values from the consumption rates and ionic concentrations. Exposures were compared to chronic oral endpoints to relate potential health risks. A map of Tukh was created using Global Positioning System and Geographic Information System technologies and acts as baseline spatial data on the area. Minerals present include trona, halite, calcite, and other evaporites. According to pH and EC results, the area used for human harvesting at Tukh is more saline than the remainder of the lake. The soil profile within the precipitate area showed a TDS of 49 mg/L and pH of 7.2 in the surface horizon relative to an EC of 0.4 mg/L and a pH of 6.4 lower in the profile. This indicates a presence of capillary rise from groundwater, resulting in evaporation and salt precipitate at the soil surface. High exposure of arsenic, antimony, and lead compared to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization endpoint values resulted in risk quotients of 33, 1.7, and 14, respectively, which create concern in the population's hujir consumption. Further epidemiological and biomonitoring research would provide insight in the health relationships to hujir consumption. Future research could benefit from the resulting spatial and chemical data completed in these studies.

Fero, Barbara <1983&gt. "Studies on the dual in Mycenaean, in the Homeric poetry and in the Attic Theatre of the 5th century — morphological, dialectal and stylistical variations." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2013. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/5940/1/fero-barbara-tesi.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The present dissertation focuses on the dual number in Ancient Greek in a diachronical lapse stretching from the Mycenaean age to the Attic Drama and Comedy of the 5th century BC. In the first chapter morphological issues are addressed, chiefly in a comparative perspective. The Indo European evidence on the dual is hence gathered in order to sketch patterns of grammaticalisation and paradigmatisation of specific grams, growing increasingly functional within the Greek domain. In the second chapter syntactical problems are tackled. After a survey of scholarly literature on the Greek dual, we engage in a functional and typological approach, in order to disentangle some biased assessments on the dual, namely its alleged lack of regularity and intermittent agreement. Some recent frameworks in General Linguistics provide useful grounds for casting new light on the subject. Internal Reconstruction, for instance, supports the facultativity of the dual in each and every stage of its development; Typology and the Animacy Hierarcy add precious cross linguistical insight on the behaviour of the dual toward agreement. Glaring differences also arise as to the adoption — or avoidance — of the dual by different authors. Idiolectal varieties prove in fact conditioned by stylistical and register necessity. By means of a comparison among Epics, Tragedy and Comedy it is possible to enhance differences in the evaluation of the dual, which led sometimes to forms of ‘censure’ — thus triggering the onset of competing strategies to express duality. The last two chapters delve into the tantalising variety of the Homeric evidence, first of all in an account of the notorious issue of the Embassy of Iliad IX, and last in a commentary of all significant Homeric duals — mostly represented by archaisms, formulae, and ad hoc coinages.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of the project is to implement a Barber truck, in which it is hoped to satisfy in a different way the growing market for men's beauty and cosmetics. Although this market is growing in general, the competitors can be standardized in their presentation and services and do not differ much from each other. The project seeks the implementation of a higher level rolling barbershop, where the main task will be to work on every detail. The mobile barber service "Barber Truck Lima" is focused on the male public between 18 and 39 years old who live or frequent the districts of Independencia, Los Olivos and San Martín de Porres in socioeconomic sectors A, B and C. Taking into account the need to find the service of a mobile barber shop seeks to be an aid to those gentlemen who are constantly taking care of their personal image and who want to better organize their time in relation to the haircutting and barber service they access. Provide a service that meets the needs of modern man without losing sight of all the care and attention that can be found in traditional barbershops.

Abstract:
Samuel Barber's Capricorn Concerto for flute, oboe and trumpet with strings is an important though seldom performed work. The concerto is teeming with performance choices that are indicative of both historical and contemporary influences. At present, there are limited resources available to performers regarding Capricorn. The first section of this study presents an historical and contextual examination of Capricorn both in terms of Barber's own compositional output and that of his influences and contemporaries. The second section includes a performance analysis of the work, while the third section includes an analysis of existing recordings. Implications for the performer are outlined in last section. The guide provides performers with pertinent background, analytical and performance information in order to facilitate informed, high-level performance.

Abstract:
In the art of song composition, American composer Samuel Barber was the perfect storm. Barber spent years studying under superb instruction and became adept as a pianist, singer, composer, and in literature and languages. The songs that Barber composed during those years of instruction, many of which have been posthumously published, are waypoints on his journey to compositional maturity. These early songs display his natural inclinations, his self-determination, his growth through trial and error, and the slow flowering of a musical vision, meticulously cultivated by the educational opportunities provided to him by his family and his many devoted mentors. Using existing well-known and recently uncovered biographical data, as well as both published and unpublished song juvenilia and mature songs, this dissertation examines the importance of Barber's earliest musical and academic training in relationship to his development as a song composer.

Abstract:
From the 3rd to the century, the Late Roman Empire faced a massive Barbarian immigration movement, even within the Sacrum Palatinum. That immigration wave brought with it a form of integration wbich evolved throughout time: a “Romanization” that was wanted but still remained partial and incomplete from the late 3rd century until the late 4th century; then from the late 4th century until the mid 5th century a full Romanization took place which was made ambiguous by the competition with Ancient Christianism; and finally a Romanization, regarded as a secondary matter because of the Christian integration pattern, occurred from the mid 5th to the early 6th century

Esra, Jo Ann. "The shaping of 'West Barbary' : the re/construction of identity and West Country Barbary captivity." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/13906.

Full text
Abstract:
Divided into three parts, this thesis maps a cultural history of Barbary captivity; concentrating on the early 17th century leading up to the Civil Wars; an aspect of British-Muslim contact within which the West Country is overrepresented in the archives. However, this wealth of material contrasts sharply with the paucity of popular and public-facing representations. Situating these accounts within wider contexts, this thesis investigates this contrast, exploring the social, cultural, emotional and economic impact of Barbary captivity upon understandings of place and identity. The first part examines representations of being taken captive, the terror and distress of West Country inhabitants, and the responses and concerns of the authorities. The on-going failure to protect the region and its seafarers exacerbated this distress, producing marginalised geographies of fear and anxiety. The second part explores the themes of memory and identity, arguing that how captives were remembered and forgotten had implications for localised and national identities. For those held in Barbary, families and communities petitioned and undertook ransom collections to redeem the captives, providing reminders to the authorities and appealing for wider remembrance as part of the processes of Christian compassion. Nevertheless, the majority of captives were ‘forgotten’, neither ransomed nor leaving their individual mark within the historical record. This part concludes with a discussion of the role of memory in managing and articulating the ‘trauma’ of captivity. The final part examines mobile and fluid identities, concentrating on returning captives and Islamic converts. Early modern theories of identity situated the humoral body of the captive as susceptible to ‘turning Turk’, contributing to wider negotiations of national, ethnic and religious identities. Cultural anxieties were preoccupied with the ill-defined borders of the geographically displaced material body, generating mutable, hidden and shameful identities. In conclusion, sites of cultural trauma are produced, indicated by the subsequent silence regarding this aspect of localised history.

Roberts, Emma Evelyn. "Barbara Hepworth : the international context." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 1996. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.544381.

Full text
Abstract:
This text aims to reassess the career and intentionality of the sculptor Barbara Hepworth. Specifically, it is suggested that Hepworth did not receive the international recognition which perhaps one would expect of a Modernist sculptor who worked within the avant-garde. Various reasons for the relative neglect of Hepworth's art are offered in this thesis. For example, critics are perceived to have interpreted her work in the light of various personal agendas, and sculptures and paintings which deny traditional interpretations have consequently been withheld from exhibitions or assessment. I suggest that Hepworth's art has been difficult to assess in the past because the works seem both to relate to the classical tradition and yet encourage a sensual reaction from the viewer. Most critics feel obliged to categorise the sculptor'S work as either 'classical' or 'romantic'. Conversely, this thesis aims to embrace all, diverse, aspects of Hepworth's art, and will draw attention to the large variety of media and styles with which the sculptor experimented. It is perceived that, with the aid of Jack Burnham's concept of 'Vitalism', one may comfortably acknowledge the breadth and heterogeneity in the oeuvre of Barbara Hepworth. It is proposed that these unexpected qualities in Hepworth's body of work confirm my idea that she aimed to be much more expressive than has been previously thought. Although Hepworth was not always successful in enabling spectators to perceive her expressions, it is suggested that critical indifference to her aim was largely what prevented her work from being promoted as an example of internationally viable British art. In order to indicate the latent, but often poorly evoked, expression in Hepworth's art, I shall juxtapose pertinent examples with certain works by other artists. These are typical works by artists who are acknowledged to be expressionist- for example, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Theodore Roszak and David Smith. The purpose of these juxtapositions is not to assert that Hepworth was in any way related to these artists, but to highlight that there was also a neglected emotional and dynamic element to Hepworth's work. It is suggested here that stylised interpretations and stereotypical viewing of works have led to the incorrect impression that Hepworth's art is austere and unemotional. This then prevented Hepworth from gaining a significant reputation on an international scale. Expression and emotion were valued in the post-war period, yet Hepworth's art did not seem to correspond with the international Zeitgeist. This thesis aims to provide a new context which may enable fresh interpretations of Hepworth's work to be offered in the future. There have been many reasons for the formulation of this argument- the majority of which resulted from my analysis of fresh archival material. However the initial impetus arose from my understanding of the literature on Hepworth as being remarkably narrow and vague in focus. Viewing of the works also indicated that there were dynamic and expressive elements in Hepworth's art which have never been appraised. As a result of these sources, it became apparent that Barbara Hepworth expressed an entirely different intentionality to that with which she has been credited: she desired an international reputation which she was effectively refused.

Abstract:
Many barber salons and other small businesses in the United States fail to succeed beyond the first 5 years. The factors responsible for the low survival rate of salons may include the limited training and education levels mandated by state certification requirements. The purpose of this multiple case study was to identify business strategies successful barber salon owners use to overcome the business management and staffing challenges associated with a small pool of skilled barbers and the high turnover in a low wage profession. The theory of transformational leadership served as the conceptual framework. The data collection included interviews of 3 successful barber salon owners who met the study participation eligibility criteria of licensed, registered, operating a salon business in the Indiana region for more than 5 years, and over the minimum age of 25 years. The 4 themes emerging from the interview data analysis were (a) barber salon operating structures, (b) salon leadership and managerial strategies, (c) licensed barber skill enhancement, and (d) salon operating strategies effectiveness and sustainability. The data analysis also involved the triangulation of the primary research against secondary data from the Small Business Administration and barber industry reports. The expertise and knowledge shared by the interviewees could serve the quest of barber salon businesses in the Indiana region to overcome the profitability and financial sustainability challenges of this industry. The study findings may potentially contribute to positive social change by improving the economic standing and welfare of barber salon owners and professionals in the community.

Abstract: Preventive strategies involving preparedness, warning, and recovery to meteorological hazardous events such as floods, are essential to correctly assist the population at risk. However, effective plans must be based upon the knowledge of the area, considering both the physical and the socioeconomic attributes, evaluated in a historical perspective. This study aims to contribute to the design of preventive plans to flood hazards in the city of Santa Barbara d'Oeste, located in Sao Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil. Because more people are living on floodplains, the impacts related to floods are increasing considerably. The register of flood events in the area is intrinsical1y connected to its physical attributes such as the characteristics of precipitation (concentrated during summer, with regular and strong convective events), the landscape's geomorphology, and the settlement patterns in the territory. The latter have recently been characterized by a fast spread of the city onto the floodplains. As a consequence, the municipality has been witnessing an increasing frequency of intense floodings of poor residential areas in the Toledos River Basin, a small river that crosses Santa Barbara's downtown. The geographic analyses evaluated both the physical and the socioeconomic aspects of floods in the area. A survey of floods registered in Santa Barbara d'Oeste shows an increase of events in recent years. As examples ofthe concentration ofrainfall episodes, one can quote: 120mm on 01 and 02 January, 1990; 120 mm on January 27,1994; 131 mm on January 8,1997; 131 mm on February 15, 1998 and 110 mm on march 28, 2000. Some maps generated using GIS softares showed some variation on spatial distribution of floods events on area. The patterns changed over the time evidencing that some works developed aiming the reduction of floods was more successful than others, overall the deepening ofthe rivers and the implementation ofsome lakes and dams

Abstract:
The recent species Eira barbara (Mustelidae, Carnivora) has a geographic distribution from Mexico to northern Argentina. It is an important taxon to be studied as an anatomical model for the mustelids, as well as an important model for a better understanding of the diversification of the Mustelidae. Currently, the fossil record of E. barbara in South America is scarce and restricted to the Pleistocene, while the studies of these fossils frequently lack greater efforts to perform detailed morphological descriptions and paleobiogeographic studies. Besides limited studies of fossil E. barbara, it was established that the same scenario is seen for the studies on the morphology and biogeography of the species. Thus, this work proposed to: perform a review of all records of the species and, in general, to contribute to a better understanding of the sincranian morphology and the biogeographic and paleobiogeographic studies of E. barbara. In order to achieve this, the following objectives were proposed: study and detailed redescription of the fossil UFAC PV-036 from the Late Pleistocene of Upper Juruá River of the southwest of Brazilian Amazon; compared sincranian description of external and internal morphological structures, analyzing intraspecific characters of extant E. barbara; performance of multivariate analysis to investigate geographical variations on the use of craniometric characters of E. barbara between different Brazilian biomes. The review of the fossil record was of great importance for the establishment of the actual records of the species in South America, while the redescription of UFAC PV-36 contributes to a better anatomical and paleobiogeographic knowledge of the species. The morphological description of the sincranium of E. barbara contribute significantly to the knowledge of the morphology of the species, as much as the description of intraspecific variation provides more appropriate morphological characters in matrices, providing greater robustness in futures phylogenetic analysis. This work proposes that E. barbara does not have statistically significant craniometric differences among Brazilian biomes; however, E. barbara is characterized here as a dimorphic species in which the males have cranial structures relatively larger than the females.

Abstract:
The music of Samuel Barber is well known in the vocal, piano, and string literature; however, little of his chamber music involves woodwinds, and in particular, only one work involves the woodwind quintet. Summer Music, originally commissioned as a septet, developed after the premiere of the work into the woodwind quintet version, with the assistance of the New York Woodwind Quintet. Barber is considered a contemporary .romantic. composer, evidenced through his use of lyricism. Summer Music, a standard in the woodwind quintet literature, should be included in every professional flutist's repertoire. The intent of this dissertation is to consider Barber's use of lyricism as a determinant of the form of Summer Music, as well as to compare the differences between the manuscript and the published edition.

Abstract:
The design of the complex addresses Roman Catholic and pre-Christian legends, symbols, and signs. It transforms them based on our understandings of ourselves and our universe today. Saint Barbara is a Roman Catholic Church located on a suburban site in Chantilly, Virginia on the eastern coast of the United States of America. Chantilly was chosen because it has been victimized by a lack of comprehensive planning. The complex is composed of a bell tower, baptistry, Sunday school, sanctuary, outdoor funeral chapel, cemetery, and parking area. The church of Saint Barbara addresses the dichotomy of human existence as both spiritual and material being.
