Abstract:
AbstractIn this note we present the first records of the tayra (Eira barbara Linneanus 1758) documented in two different places within the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The first ocurred in 2013 in the southern part of the state, in the Sierra Otomi-Tepehua region within the Zicatlán town in the municipality of Huehuetla, when an individual was captured in a fragmented evergreen tropical forest. The second record was registred in 2014 through the identification of individuals in five photographs taken in the north of Hidalgo, in the Sierra Gorda cloud forest within the town of San Cristobal in the municipality of La Misión. New records confirm the presence of the tayra in Hidalgo and is evident that some areas of the state have suitable conditions for this species. The records ocurred north and south of the state, for this region gathers appropiate characteristics as a biological corridor for the species. We consider that due to their charateristics these areas are favorable as landscape to connect the northern and southern population of the species in central Mexico. Results suggest that it is necessary to increase the knowledge of this species distribution, in order to identify appropriate strategies for their conservation in Mexico. Keywords: Conservation, Hidalgo, Sierra Otomí-Tepehua, Sierra Gorda hidalguense, Eira barbara.

Abstract:
AbstractThe tayra (Eira barbara) and ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) are species that are cataloged in danger of extinction. In this work we present new records of both species in the central coastal region of Yucatan state, Mexico. Our observations are based on records using camera traps, placed in fragments of secondary vegetation in tropical dry forest (TDF) with some degree of disturbance. We obtained two records of tayra, one of them shows two individuals, in addition to six photographs of ocelot. These records denote the importance of tdf patches as potential shelters, biological corridors or wildlife passage sites.Key words: Camera-trapping, Carnivore, new records, Yucatan.

Abstract:
This chapter will consider Stanwyck’s unique position as a role model for mature women in the 1950s and 1960s. It will also examine the reasons for Stanwyck’s popularity as a mature female during this period. Unlike many of the female stars of her generation that were forced to end their careers in the 1950s Stanwyck extended her film career until well into the 1960s by performing in B Westerns and television series. Stanwyck’s maturity and visible ageing affected the roles she played but also turned Stanwyck into a role model for mature women. The chapter will demonstrate the construction of Stanwyck’s image by locating it in its original context and it will offer explanations for the fashionability of Stanwyck as a mature star in the 1950s and 1960s.

Abstract:
The third chapter presents the steps by which early chiropractic became an organized system of health care: the elaboration of chiropractic theories, the establishment of training institutes like the Palmer School of Chiropractic (P.S.C.) in Davenport, Iowa, and the making of a collective consciousness for the profession. Though their relationship was fraught with hostility, D. D. Palmer had considerable help from his son, B. J. Palmer, in developing chiropractic, which they had to distinguish from systems like osteopathy, with which it often was confused. Spinal therapeutics were a major part of 19th century health culture, but not originally central to chiropractic treatment or the First Chiropractic Theory. After the Santa Barbara Incident, the Palmers adopted the neurocentric logic of Progressive Era popular physiology, where maintaining the health of the nervous system through care of the spine was prioritized in the Second Chiropractic Theory.

Full text
Abstract:
A systematic investigation of the effects of specimen size on the cleavage fracture toughness of a typical pressure vessel steel is reported. Size dependence arises both from: i) statistical effects, related to the volume of highly stressed material near the crack tip, that scales with the crack front length (B); and ii) constraint loss, primarily associated with the scale of plastic deformation compared to the uncracked ligament dimension (b). Previously, it has been difficult to quantify the individual contributions of statistical versus constraint loss to size effects. Thus, we developed a single variable database for a plate section from the Shoreham pressure vessel using a full matrix of bend specimens, with B from 8 to 254 mm and b from 3.2 to 25.4 mm, that were tested at a common set of conditions. The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) b-B database was analyzed using three-dimensional finite element simulations of the crack tip fields combined with a cleavage model calibrated to the local fracture properties of the Shoreham steel. This paper focuses on the possible significance of these results to the Master Curve Method Standard as formulated ASTM E 1921-97. The statistical scaling procedure used in E 1921-97 to treat variations in B was found to be reasonably consistent with the UCSB b-B database. However, constraint loss for bend specimens begins at a deformation level that is much lower than the censoring limit specified in E 1921-97. Unrecognized constraint loss leads to a non-conservative, negative bias in the evaluation of To, estimated to be typically on the order of a −10°C for pre-cracked Charpy specimens.
