Cette recherche s'organise autour de trois points: tout d'abord nous allons nous intéresser au regard posé par nos sources sur ces individus. interroger l'identité de ces personnes autour du champ de l'ethnicité et la mettre en relation avec toutes ses variables, origine sociale entre autres ; il faudra également interroger l'opinion portée par les auteurs antiques sur la valeur militaire, les mœurs et les trahisons des chefs et officiers barbares de la militia armata. Une seconde partie envisagera en quoi les chefs et officiers barbares ou d'origine barbare font partie des élites de ma militia armata, et des élites de la société romaine de l'Antiquité tardive, pour les officiers principalement, et participent au renouvellement de celles-ci Une troisième partie s'intéressera au degré de participation des chefs et officiers barbares dans la militia armata de Constantin à Anastase, et ce, dans une continuité temporelle afin de mesurer les effets de la conjoncture historique sur le recrutement ethnique de la militia armata. From the 3rd to the century, the Late Roman Empire faced a massive Barbarian immigration movement, even within the Sacrum Palatinum. That immigration wave brought with it a form of integration wbich evolved throughout time: a “Romanization” that was wanted but still remained partial and incomplete from the late 3rd century until the late 4th century; then from the late 4th century until the mid 5th century a full Romanization took place which was made ambiguous by the competition with Ancient Christianism; and finally a Romanization, regarded as a secondary matter because of the Christian integration pattern, occurred from the mid 5th to the early 6th century

Dans le cadre chronologique du quatrième siècle après J. -C. , à partir des sources littéraires, épigraphiques, juridiques, iconographiques, et numismatiques, deux problèmes sont étudies: la définition des barbares: l'attitude des romains face aux barbares libres et impériaux. Les critères sont divers: extériorité, absence de vie organisée, infériorité morale et intellectuelle: tous les jugements ne sont pas négatifs, et des peuples extérieurs peuvent ne pas être définis comme barbares. Les comportements sont variables dans l'espace et dans le temps à côté de la fuite ou de la trahison, des phénomènes de résistance ont existé, surtout en Orient. L'emploi de barbares dans l'Empire a rencontré des réserves grandissantes, mais rarement une hostilité totale. Le thème de l'assimilation des barbares n'a jamais disparu, mais la crainte de la barbarisassions n'a cessé d'augmenter
The barbarian problem may be examined in two different ways in the fourth century a. D. : the definition of the barbarian: the study of roman attitudes towards the barbarians living inside and outside the empire. Source material is to be found in writings, inscriptions, laws monuments and coins. Various criteria are to be considered: a situation beyond roman frontiers, a lack of organized social life, or moral and intellectual inferiority: not every roman judgment is systematically pejorative, and some foreign peoples may be perceived as not barbarian. Roman attitudes vary according to space and time: there were flights and treasons, but also popular resistance, especially in the eastern part of the empire. Employing barbarians has encountered more and more suspicion, but has hardly ever been fully condemned. The notion of assimilation has never disappeared, but the fear of barbarizations has never ceased growing

Abstract:
Malgré le redressement accompli par les Tétrarques et Constantin, les relations avec les barbares restent un problème essentiel pour Rome. En témoignent les 25 séquences de pourparlers de paix engagés le long du limes rhéno-danubien entre la mort de Constantin (337) et celle de Valentinien (375). Après une typologie des circonstances dans lesquelles s'engagent ces pourparlers, la thèse analyse la façon concrète dont ils se déroulent. Ils s'organisent en deux étapes : premiers contacts par l'intermédiaire de délégués puis cérémonie de conclusion de la paix. Tout se passe en général dans le barbaricum, quand les barbares, impressionnés par l'adversaire, terrorisés par les ravages subis ou vaincus, envoient des délégués au camp romain pour solliciter la paix. Les sources les présentent en suppliants, mais loin de faire leur deditio, ils viennent discuter les clauses de la paix. Lors de la deuxième phase, chefs et guerriers doivent se livrer à une supplicatio, rappelant le rituel de deditio. Puis ils jurent de respecter la paix et fournissent des otages en garantie. En échange, Rome offre sa fides probablement par un traité (foedus), qui fait du chef barbare un " client ", à qui est sans doute remis un document écrit. Deux fois la cérémonie dérape et se termine par le massacre des barbares. Plus rarement, les pourparlers se déroulent dans l'Empire, alors que les barbares y sont encore. Rome se contente alors d'obtenir leur départ (sans conclure semble-t-il de foedus), ou accepte leur deditio et renonce à les expulser. Enfin, quand Rome accepte de conclure la paix en terrain neutre en 369 et en 374, et de traiter le barbare en " ami ", c'est le signe d'une détérioration du rapport de forces entre les deux parties, dont les effets se font sentir en 376 quand Valens doit accepter l'entrée des Wisigoths dans l'Empire.

De nombreuses études ont déjà été menées sur les relations diplomatiques romano-barbares au Vème siècle, mais toutes ont délaissé l’étude des modalités de ces relations au profit d’études sur les clauses des traités conclus. Pourtant l’étude des modalités de la diplomatie est d’un grand intérêt. Envoyer ou recevoir une ambassade, négocier, conclure un traité, pose toute une série de problèmes extrêmement concrets révélateurs du type de relation construit ou en construction entre deux partenaires, toutes questions inséparables de celles qui touchent au contenu des actes. Le déroulement des négociations soulève également des questions aussi concrètes que la langue employée ou les différents interlocuteurs de l’ambassadeur. De tout cela on peut tirer des renseignements mettant en lumière d’autres aspects des relations diplomatiques romano-barbares que la simple étude des clauses de traités et voir se dessiner dans la confrontation la figure et la nature des interlocuteurs
Many studies have already been carried out about the Romano-Barbarian diplomatic relations in the 5th century but they all neglected to go into the terms of the diplomatic relations in favour of studies on the provisions of the treaties in force. Yet, studying the terms of diplomacy is of great interest. Sending or receiving an embassy, negotiating, signing a treaty, causes all kinds of very concrete problems revealing the type of relations built -or in the process of building- between two partners, all these matters being inseparable from the ones relating to the content of the deeds. The course of the negotiations also brings up questions as concrete as the language used or the various interlocutors of the ambassador. Information can be drawn from all this, bringing out other aspects of the Romano-Barbarian diplomatic relations than the mere study of the treaty provisions, and the picture and nature of the interlocutors may become apparent in the confrontation

À partir du règne de Constantin Ier, la défense de l’Empire fut mise en œuvre par un corps de généraux qui récupérèrent les anciens pouvoirs militaires des préfets du prétoire : les magistri militum. Confrontés à des menaces militaires incessantes (pression barbare aux frontières et épisodes de guerre civile), ces officiers supérieurs furent la plupart du temps épargnés par les purges qui frappaient le personnel de cour, car ils constituaient une assise fondamentale du pouvoir de l’empereur. Au début du Ve siècle ap. J.-C., l’Empire romain unifié fit place à deux partes imperii indépendantes, voire rivales : un Empire byzantin replié sur l’Orient, et une partie occidentale qui tendit à se fragmenter en royaumes barbares. Comment le haut commandement militaire évolua-t-il dans chacune de ces régions ? Ce corps d’officiers a fait l’objet d’une étude prosopographique tenant compte des recherches les plus récentes, en vue de fournir une synthèse qui a été menée selon trois axes principaux : - en termes institutionnels, quelle était la place de ces généraux dans la chaîne de commandement ?- en termes d’histoire militaire, quel fut le rôle de ces généraux dans les transformations que connut l’armée romaine tardive ?- en termes d’histoire sociale, comment cette noblesse militaire, dont une partie avait des origines barbares, se définissait-elle par rapport à la romanité et à la société de cour tardo-antique ?
From the reign of Constantine the Great onward, the defence of the Empire was the responsibility of a group of generals who were trusted with the previous military responsabilities of the pretorian prefects : the magistri militum. Facing restless threats (barbarian pressure on the frontiers and episodes of civil war), these high officers were most of the time kept away from the regular revolutions that struck the court : they were one of the base of the imperial authority. At the beginning of the fifth century, the unified roman Empire had been replaced by two independent, sometimes even rival partes imperii : a byzantine Empire, limited to the East, and a western part which eventually collapsed to form barbarian kingdoms. How did the high military command evolve in each of these parts ?A prosopographical study, taking into account the most up-to-date research, has been made on this group of officiers, in order to provide a synthesis developing three main axis :- from an institutional point of view, what was the place of these generals in the chain of command ?- from a military point of view, which role did this generals play in the transformations that affected the Late roman army ?- from a social point of view, how did this military nobility, which included people with barbarian origins, defined herself with regard to romanity and the Late Antique court society ?

Il est convenu de considérer l'enseignement de l'histoire comme pouvant être une occasion privilégiée de rencontre avec l'autre-passe, c'est à dire une expérience de l'altérité. Au travers de l'analyse de la structure des représentations sociales afférentes aux barbares et aux invasions barbares fournies par les élèves de cycle trois ainsi que par ceux des classes de sixième et de cinquième de collège, cette rencontre apparait principalement, dans ce cas précis comme une méconnaissance de l'autre-barbare. En effet, les représentations sociales des élèves sont fondamentalement péjoratives à l'encontre des barbares et dépréciatives quant à la nature des invasions. De plus, les représentations des enseignants présentent de grandes similarités avec celles des élèves. Si bien que l'on peut se demander pour quelles raisons ces représentations sont analogues et comment une rencontre avec l'autre-passé pourrait s'opérer avec des représentations présentant une telle homogénéité? D’autant que les leçons des manuels d'histoire des classes concernées relèvent des mêmes représentations. L'issue pourrait consister à la mise en place de situations-problèmes offrant la possibilité de confronter plusieurs points de vue situes sur des plans différents : points de vue de l'autre-passe, points de vue d'historiens relatifs à l'autre-passe, points de vue de l'autre-présent, élèves et enseignants qui participent à la situation-problème.

The study analyses the American neo-avantgarde as well as the narratives of Swedish post World War II art history, through a specific subject position. The Swedish painter Barbro Östlihn (1930-1995) lived in New York from 1961, where her work was exhibited and received on a new art scene. Despite the strong focus within Swedish Art History on the 1960’s and the American art scene, Östlihn seems to be marginalized in its narratives. Studies of selected corpora of American art criticism, and of segments in the Swedish art scene in the 1960’s are maintained. Discursive and field-related mechanisms, which help to explain what positions were available, are revealed. Transnational processes of avant-garde culture between Manhattan and Stockholm are discussed, e.g. through an analysis of the American pop art show at Moderna Museet in 1964. This becomes the backdrop for the final chapter’s discussion of the narratives in post World War II Art History in Sweden. In the interpretation of Östlihn’s work-process, her use of photography is understood as a strategy to connect her painterly work with urban space. The painterly and the photographic are merged, as in other artistic practices in a historical moment of crisis in painting. The studio, the site where modes of art production are constructed, is one point of departure in a spatial analysis of the art field. Another is the ongoing urban renewal on Lower Manhattan and its impact on artistic work and on how artists are positioned. Östlihn’s co-operation in the work of her husband Öyvind Fahlström, is understood as a merging of a traditional division of work between genders, and new co-operative modes of art-production. The study is the first academic work on Barbro Östlihn, and covers the time span 1960-1969. Feminist theory, Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory and Michel Foucault's discourse theory is used as its main framework.

Les volcans de boue ou structures argilocinetiques sont liees a des manifestations d'expulsion de fluides produits par un exces de pression de fluide en profondeur. Differentes manifestations de sorties de fluides telles que les concretions carbonatees, les clams et les buissons d'eponges ont ete observees sur toutes les structures etudiees. Nous avons demontre que ces manifestations de sorties de fluides sont en fait liees a un systeme de convection superficielle ou les hydrates de methane jouent un role important. Deux types de structures ont ete particulierement etudie: les diatremes et les diapirs. Les diatremes sont des structures plates dont la morphologie s'explique par l'expulsion d'une boue fluide dans la partie centrale appelee il. Du fluide riche en methane est advecte a travers la couche superficielle tandis qu'en dessous de cette couche la boue fluide convecte. La surface de l'il est mecaniquement instable et est renouvelee periodiquement. Dans un diapir, le sommet plat, qui couvre moins de 10% de la surface totale, est le lieu de sorties actives de fluides. Il n'y a pas de boue fluide au centre. Un systeme de double circulation de fluides a travers des conduits a permeabilite elevee permet l'installation de la chaine trophique. L'etude geochimique a montre qu'une des sources possible pour ces fluides a faible chlorinite et enrichis en methane correspond a la dissociation des hydrates de methane en profondeur provoquee par la circulation d'un fluide chaud le long du decollement. La liberation d'eau contribue a fluidiser la boue (formation d'un diatreme) et celle de methane a diminuer sa densite (formation d'un diapir)

La présente recherche sous la direction de J.-M. Carrié, a porté sur les fédérés (foederati), ces combattants barbares servant dans leurs contingents ethnico-tactiques sous commandement de leurs chefs ethniques. Les fédérés étaient fournis par des groupes ethniques alliés de l’Empire dans le cadre de traités (foedus/foedera, spondê/spondai, synthêkê/synthêkai) : des gentes foederatae, enspondoi, hypospondoi, ces termes soulignant le lien diplomatique entre l’Empire et la gens. A la dimension diplomatique, s’ajoute la dimension militaire exprimée dans le vocabulaire de l’alliance (societas, symmachia), de l’auxiliariat (auxilium) ainsi que dans celui de l’amitié (amicitia/philia). L’analyse terminologique montre que les auteurs anciens utilisent le vocabulaire classique comme un filtre qu’il faut dépasser pour appréhender les fédérés. Une analyse fine et contextualisée des sources restituant une stratigraphie sémantique et révélant les anachronismes d'historiens décrivant d'après la situation de leur époque des phénomènes passés, a permis de souligner cette évolution masquée par la continuité terminologique. L’apparition des termes techniques foederati et phoideratoi au Ve siècle ne doit pas tromper. Il faut interpréter le terme foederati à partir des années 400 comme le recours à un terme républicain ancien pour désigner un nouvel aspect d’une réalité connue des Romains – celle des contingents fournis par les alliés selon des traités – notamment depuis le basculement stratégique des guerres danubiennes sous Marc Aurèle qui annoncent les difficultés à venir de l’Empire au IIIe siècle – puis aux Ve et VIe siècles – et la nécessité pour ce dernier de trouver des solutions aux périls pesant sur l’ordre impérial : le recours au substantif foederati permettait de nommer des combattants levés par traités auprès de gentes établies sur le sol impérial (gentes foederatae intra fines imperii), les Goths incarnant, après Andrinople, les premières gentes établies par traités dans l’Empire, alors que le terme désignait les contingents ethnico-tactiques fournis par des gentes foederatae extérieures au territoire impérial. Il faut distinguer les foederati extérieurs fournis par les gentes foederatae extérieures des foederati impériaux fournis par les gentes établies dans l’Empire à partir des années 380-400. Si le phénomène des foederati est ancien, les admissions territoriales de gentes par foedera/spondai lui conférèrent de nouveaux aspects. Par l’établissement territorial de gentes intra fines imperii, l’Empire appliquait à des groupes un mode de gestion de relations romano-barbares réservé aux gentes extérieures au territoire impérial : la conclusion de traités. Pris dans une logique de rapports de force, sur son sol et sur ses confins, l’Empire devait utiliser ces gentes selon ses intérêts. L’étude montre que l’Empire tenta de maîtriser le phénomène en intégrant les foederati au système militaire impérial suivant des besoins militaires, tactiques et stratégiques. Le recours aux chefs comme médiateurs entre leurs gentes, leurs fédérés et l’Empire a été fondamental. La volonté de contrôle de l’Etat impérial se mesure également à l’intégration des foederati au système logistique (ravitaillement, rémunérations, entretien) de la machine de guerre impériale. On peut se demander si l’Etat impérial n’a pas conçu les foederati comme un outil permettant de gérer différemment les ressources militaires, humaines et financières nécessaires à la défense de l’Empire. A cette fin, l’idéologie impériale a développé un discours justifiant l’emploi par l’Empire de ses gentes foederatae avec des objectifs stratégiques répondant aux défis auxquels l’Empire fut confronté de la fin du IIIe siècle au début du VIIe siècle
The federates (foederati, symmachoi, auxiliares) were soldiers recruited among barbarian groups (gentes) – settled inside or outside the Empire – who committed by treaties (foedus/foedera ; spondê/spondai) to provide the Emperor with warriors serving on their owns.The study tries to show that the Empire attempted to control this phenomenon by including the foederati to the imperial military system in accordance with military needs and specific tactics.The will of control from the imperial state is also measured by the integration of the foederati into the imperial logistical system during military operations (food supplies, payment, and maintenance).One can wonder if the imperial state didn’t create the foederati as a tool allowing to manage – in a different way – the military, human, and financial resources required to the defense of the Empire.To that purpose, the imperial ideology seems to have set up a speech to justify and legitimate the employment by the Empire of these gentes foederatae (enspondoi, hypospondoi) with strategic goals/aims, in agreement with the challenges the Empire was confronted by from the end of the 3rd century to the beginning of the 7th (century)

In order to understand the possible mechanisms in the glaucoma-related retinopathy, the role of the vasoconstrictor, endothelin-1 (ET-1), receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) as well as its ligand, Aβ in the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) were studied in experimental models. In addition, the relationship of ET-1, RAGE and Aβ for the RGC protective mechanism of Lycium Barbarum (LB) was also investigated. In the first part, ET-1 together with its receptors, ETA and ETB, were studied to understand their possible roles in chronic ocular hypertension (COH). The neuronal protective mechanism of LB was also determined by using a well established COH rat model. In normal rats, ET-1 and its receptors, ETA and ETB, were distributed in the retina, vasculature and optic nerve. Interestingly, ET-1 expression was up-regulated after COH. LB could decrease the expression of ET-1 and regulate its receptors (up-regulation of ETB and down-regulation of ETA in vasculature; up-regulation of ETA and down-regulation of ETB in RGCs) under the condition of COH. These data suggested that the RGC protective mechanism of LB might be related to its ability to regulate the biological effects of ET-1. To investigate the pathogenic effect of ET-1 in glaucoma, in the second part, we used transgenic mice with over-expression of ET-1 on endothelial cells (TET-1 mice). We found that beginning at 10-12 months, TET-1 mice showed a progressive retinal degeneration (loss of RGCs associated with neurons in the inner nuclear layer and outer nuclear layer of the retina) without elevation of the intraocular pressure (IOP). The data demonstrated that TET-1 mice may serve as a potential model to investigate the role of endothelial ET-1 in the pathogenesis of normal tension glaucoma and other degenerative retinopathy. To investigate whether LB plays a role on neuronal protection other than in COH, in the third part, we used an acute ocular hypertension (AOH)-induced ischemia mouse model. We found that LB could rescue RGCs under AOH insult, associating with blood vessel protection (decreasing the damage of blood-retinal-barriers and rescuing the survival of endothelial cells and pericytes) and inhibiting retinal gliosis. We also found the protective mechanism of LB was closely correlated with down-regulation of the expression of RAGE, ET-1, APP (amyloid precursor protein), AGE (advanced glycation end-product) as well as Aβ; therefore to reduce the damage effects of these RAGE-mediated reactions to the retinal neurons, blood vessels and glial cells involved in the ischemic insult. Taken together, the present study demonstrated that TET-1 mice may be a potential model for investigating the role of ET-1 in degenerative retinopathies, such as normal tension glaucoma. We also showed the neuronal protective mechanism of LB in vivo was associated with inhibiting the biological effect of ET-1 and down-regulating the damage signaling pathways mediated by the activation of RAGE and its ligands (AGE and Aβ). These results provided further understandings in the mechanism of the glaucoma-related retinopathy. In addition, LB could be a neuroprotective agent to the retina following both chronic and acute injuries.

L'impact de la qualite spectrale a ete etudie chez deux fucales (cystoseira barbata et fucus serratus) au niveau de la croissance, des caracteristiques photosynthetiques et de la composition pigmentaire. Les radiations bleues ont une action stimulatrice tres nette sur la croissance et la morphogenese de la cystoseire, de meme que sur les capacites photosynthetiques des deux especes. De plus, elles entrainent chez le fucus une augmentation de la teneur en carotenoides. Enfin, la rubp carboxylase est stimulee sous le type de radiations. L'exposition aux radiations rouges entraine une augmentation de la taille des physodes, traduisant une importante activite de degradation metabolique. Sous ce type de radiations, les -carboxylations representent 50% de la fixation totale du carbone, alors qu'elles constituent 20% de cette fixation en lumiere blanche. Enfin, chez la cystoseire, il a ete montre une adaptation a une large gamme d'eclairements et aux fluctuations de salinite. Un screening des capacites photosynthetiques realise sur trois autres cystoseires mediterraneennes a complete ces donnees

Resumo: A presente tese dedica-se ao estudo de alguns dos pressupostos teóricos subjacentes a leituras críticas de obras das chamadas literaturas africanas de língua portuguesa. Na primeira parte da tese, ¿Traçando o percurso: em terra sonâmbula¿, em que analisamos o romance Terra Sonâmbula, de Mia Couto, duas estratégias de interpretação adquirem destaque: 1) a que enfatiza a busca de traços de oralidade no texto, sugerindo-se que o intertexto com a oralidade determina a estrutura romanesca, sendo a camada dos contos e provérbios decisiva; 2) a que interpreta as estratégias de composição do romance à luz dos desafios que um evento de violência radical, como a guerra civil moçambicana, impõe à narrativa. O recuo teórico, que é empreendido na segunda parte, ¿Desfazendo o traçado: recuo teórico¿, investiga alguns dos pressupostos destas duas estratégias analítico-interpretativas. No capítulo ¿A palavra justa¿, primeiro capítulo da segunda parte, tratamos especialmente do instrumental analítico desenvolvido pelos estudos do discurso testemunhal (com destaque para as teóricas Jeanne-Marie Gagnebin e Shoshana Felman) e pelos estudos pós-coloniais (com destaque para Edward Said, Arlindo Barbeitos e Mudimbe). Nosso foco está na imbricação de estratégias discursivas e posicionamentos ético-políticos, eixo das teorizações dos dois campos teóricos abordados. No segundo capítulo desta segunda parte, intitulado ¿A escrita culpada¿, apresentamos o estudo da dicotomia escrita/oralidade, remontando a Jean-Jacques Rousseau e perpassando teóricos bastante demandados no âmbito dos estudos de traços de oralidade nas literaturas africanas: Vladímir Propp, Walter Benjamin e Paul Zumthor. Nosso interesse é explicitar certas associações (como liberdade, alegria e oralidade versus impedimento, solidão e escrita) e pressupostos (como a linearidade histórica e o condicionamento econômico e/ou de mídia) muitas vezes implicados na reposição desta dicotomia em âmbito dos estudos das literaturas africanas, como também sugerir convergências e divergências nas formulações dos pensadores estudados. Abstract: This dissertation is dedicated to the study of some theoretical presuppositions underlying the critical readings of the so-called African Literature of Portuguese Language. In the first part of the dissertation, "Tracing the Path: in Terra Sonâmbula", in which we analyze the book Terra Sonâmbula (Sleepwalking Land), by Mia Couto, two main interpretative strategies are revealed: 1) the one that searches for traces of orality in the text, and suggests that the intertext with orality determines its Romanesque structure ¿ to which the short stories and proverbs are decisive; 2) the one that analyses the novel¿s compositional structures in search of the challenges that a radical event of violence, for example the civil war in Mozambique, imposes to the narrative. The theoretical retreat, which is undertaken in the second part, "Undoing the Path: Theoretical Retreat", investigates some of the suppositions of these two strategies of analysis and interpretation. In the chapter "The Fair Word", first chapter of the second part, we focus on the analytical instruments developed by the studies of testimonial discourses (especially Jeanne-Marie Gagnebin and Shoshana Felman) and the post-colonial discourses (especially Edward Said, Arlindo Barbeitos and Mudimbe). Our focus is on the imbrication between discursive strategies and ethical-political positionings, which form the theoretical core of the two fields approached. In the second chapter of the second part, titled ¿The Guilty Writing¿, we present the study of the dichotomy between writing and orality, remounting to Jean-Jacques Rousseau and perpassing some acclaimed theoreticians of the study of orality traces in African Literature: Vladímir Propp, Walter Benjamin and Paul Zumthor. Our interest is to make explicit certain associations (like freedom, joy and orality versus impediment, solitude and writing) and presuppositions (like the historical linearity and the economical conditioning and/or midia) many times implicated in the repositioning of this dichotomy in the field of African Literature Studies, as well as suggest some convergencies and divergencies in the formulations of these thinkers. The final part of the work (Furtive Writing: Some Final Considerations) is dedicated to conclusive considerations, which relate the previous parts and include a new approach to the novel. Somehow, the structure of the dissertation reflects our investigative path, which went from the Couto's novel to the theoretical investigation of its critical fortune
