The spinning red-and-white pole outside Pat’s Barber Shop on D’Arcy Street in Toronto carries all the promise of a “clean cut“ — flat-top, military cut or shave with a straight-edge razor — fast and cheap. Inside Pat’s shop, there is more talcum powder than oxygen, and the mise en scène, consisting of yellowed walls, worn chairs and a hat rack, appears like a deteriorating illusion nesting among city hospitals, university buildings and trendy restaurants. It is precisely this incongruous setting of small-town coiffeur and modernist architecture that first attracted Bluemouth Inc., an interdisc

Abstract Stump heights were measured on six recently harvested nonindustrial private timber sales in the Virginia coastal plain. The tracts had been clearcut by six different logging contractors. Three of the tracts had been felled with hydraulic shears, and three had been felled with continuousdisk sawheads. Sawhead-felled stumps were found to be significantly higher than shear-felled stumps for both pine and hardwood on all tracts. Estimated stumpage revenue loss for the three sawhead-felled tracts due to high stumps and saw kerf was $12.04/ac. Both sheared and sawhead-felledstumps exhibited

In the economy, a huge role is played by those who have nothing to do with real production activities. Speculation is showing its results now, which has been feverish for the world economy for a year. This problem can be corrected by barter relations between producers and integrated logistics, that is, logistics barter. The theory of logistics barter (barter logistics) does not refuse money, but ignores it between producers. Logistics has reached and is reaching such heights when the need for a" universal equivalent of goods " between manufacturers simply disappears! New LBP providers are bein

In the packaging industry multilayer materials are usually used to achieve the barrier requirements, however they are usually not recyclable and will not biodegrade when discarded. The outstanding barrier properties of poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) make it an excellent candidate for a biodegradable oxygen and water vapor barrier packaging material. At the same time, its processability into films using standard converting equipment is a major challenge. Low melt strength, high processing temper

Ideological changes in industrial approaches require greater ecological thinking. Regarding plastics, the integration of plastic waste into the circular economy arises from the urgent need to design and develop sustainable alternatives. The primary objective of a recycling process is to ensure that the quality of recycled plastics consistently matches that of the original product. Regional authorities and regulations require the assessment and prevention of the potential safety hazards of possible contaminants in recycling streams, recycling processes, and recycling technologies. Abstract:
The Mississippi Valley Division (MVD) has maintained the Mississippi River banks for over 80 years. The Mat Sinking Unit (MSU), built in 1946, was considered state-of-the-art at the time. This system is still in operation today and has placed over 1,000 miles of Articulated Concrete Mats along the Mississippi River from Head of Passes, LA, to Cairo, IL. A new MSU has been designed and is expected to be fully mission capable and operational by the 2023 season, which is expected to increase the productivity from 2,000 squares/day up to 8,000 squares/day with double shifts and optimal conditions.

Trade-linked cross-border climate impacts have the potential to severely disrupt the European economy. Yet, the research landscape that surrounds these potential impacts remains in a relatively nascent stage. Importantly, whilst quantitative approaches can be applied in isolation to develop our understanding of cascading cross-border impacts, these should ideally be supplemented by the broader development of knowledge as to how initial climate triggers might evolve via trade systems, might interact with the actions and activities of supply chain actors, and how the wider policy landscape might

The deep mixing method is an in-situ ground improvement technique in which cementitious binder is mixed with soil using equipment that penetrates at least several meters into the ground. The mixing equipment can be vertical-axis rotating augers with mixing blades, horizontal-axis rotating wheels or drums with teeth, or chain-saw type equipment in which a chain with teeth moves around a post that is inserted into the ground. The product of deep mixing is referred to as "cement-treated soil" in this report to distinguish it from "soil-cement", which is a term that has long been used to refer to

The World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002 set the goal of minimising the adverse impacts of chemicals and waste by 2020. This goal has not been achieved yet. Therefore, other approaches are needed to prevent, minimise, or replace harmful substances. One possible approach is this master thesis which deals with the challenges that the textile importer DELTEX is facing with regard to a transparent communication of chemicals used and contained in the product in its supply chain. DELTEX is bound by legal regulations and requirements of its customer and must ensure that the

Addressing environmental challenges while improving social and economic conditions calls for innovative solutions. One of those challenges is the management of organic waste, which if left untreated can lead to water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil degradation. Brazil produces substantial amounts of organic waste due to its sizeable population and extensive agricultural production. As one of the largest economies in the Global South, the development of innovative solutions to organic waste management in Brazil can potentially pave the way for their adoption in other countries wit

Background: Clear allergen communication in food business operators (FBOs) has been shown to have a positive impact on customers’ perceptions of businesses (Barnett et al., 2013). However, the precise size and nature of this effect is not known: there is a paucity of quantitative evidence in this area, particularly in the form of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The Food Standards Agency (FSA), in collaboration with Kantar’s Behavioural Practice, conducted a feasibility trial to investigate whether a randomised cluster trial – involving the proactive communication of allergen information a
