Abstract:
The objective of the project is to implement a Barber truck, in which it is hoped to satisfy in a different way the growing market for men's beauty and cosmetics. Although this market is growing in general, the competitors can be standardized in their presentation and services and do not differ much from each other. The project seeks the implementation of a higher level rolling barbershop, where the main task will be to work on every detail. The mobile barber service "Barber Truck Lima" is focused on the male public between 18 and 39 years old who live or frequent the districts of Independencia, Los Olivos and San Martín de Porres in socioeconomic sectors A, B and C. Taking into account the need to find the service of a mobile barber shop seeks to be an aid to those gentlemen who are constantly taking care of their personal image and who want to better organize their time in relation to the haircutting and barber service they access. Provide a service that meets the needs of modern man without losing sight of all the care and attention that can be found in traditional barbershops.

Decamp, Eleanor Sian. "Performing barbers, surgeons and barber-surgeons in early modern English literature." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:42cdcea1-56b8-4d3d-961f-d2a3e7fa0d13.

Abstract:
This study addresses the problem critics have faced in identifying contemporary perceptions of the barber, surgeon and barber-surgeon in early modernity by examining the literature, predominantly the drama, from the period. The name ‘barber-surgeon’ is not given formally to any character in extant early modern plays; only within the dialogue or during stage business is a character labelled the barber-surgeon. Barbers and surgeons are simultaneously separate and doubled-up characters. The differences and cross-pollinations between their practices play out across the literature and tell us not just about their cultural, civic and occupational histories but also about how we interpret patterns in language, onomastics, dramaturgy, materiality, acoustics and semiology. Accordingly, the argument in this study is structured thematically and focuses on the elements of performance, moving from discussions of names to discussions of settings and props, disguises, stage directions and semiotics, and from sound effects and music, to voices and rhetorical turns. In doing so, it questions what it means in early modernity to have a developed literary identity, or be deprived of one. The barber-surgeon is a trope in early modern literature because he has a tangible social impact and an historical meaning derived from his barbery and surgery roots, and consequently a richly allusive idiom which exerted attraction for audiences. But the figure of the barber-surgeon can also be a trope in investigating how representation works. An aesthetic of doubleness, which this study finds to be diversely constructed, prevails in barbers’, surgeons’ and barber-surgeons’ literary conception, and the barber-surgeon in the popular imagination is created from opposing cultural stereotypes. The literature from the period demonstrates why a guild union of barbers and surgeons was never harmonious: they are opposing dramaturgical as well as medical figures. This study has a wide-ranging literary corpus, including early modern play texts, ballads, pamphlets, guild records, dictionaries, inventories, medical treatises and archaeological material, and contributes to the critical endeavours of the medical humanities, cultural materialists, theatre historians and linguists.

Mevo, Kouassi Gilles. "Sustainability Strategies of Barber Salons." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6457.

Full text
Abstract:
Many barber salons and other small businesses in the United States fail to succeed beyond the first 5 years. The factors responsible for the low survival rate of salons may include the limited training and education levels mandated by state certification requirements. The purpose of this multiple case study was to identify business strategies successful barber salon owners use to overcome the business management and staffing challenges associated with a small pool of skilled barbers and the high turnover in a low wage profession. The theory of transformational leadership served as the conceptual framework. The data collection included interviews of 3 successful barber salon owners who met the study participation eligibility criteria of licensed, registered, operating a salon business in the Indiana region for more than 5 years, and over the minimum age of 25 years. The 4 themes emerging from the interview data analysis were (a) barber salon operating structures, (b) salon leadership and managerial strategies, (c) licensed barber skill enhancement, and (d) salon operating strategies effectiveness and sustainability. The data analysis also involved the triangulation of the primary research against secondary data from the Small Business Administration and barber industry reports. The expertise and knowledge shared by the interviewees could serve the quest of barber salon businesses in the Indiana region to overcome the profitability and financial sustainability challenges of this industry. The study findings may potentially contribute to positive social change by improving the economic standing and welfare of barber salon owners and professionals in the community.

Abstract:
In the art of song composition, American composer Samuel Barber was the perfect storm. Barber spent years studying under superb instruction and became adept as a pianist, singer, composer, and in literature and languages. The songs that Barber composed during those years of instruction, many of which have been posthumously published, are waypoints on his journey to compositional maturity. These early songs display his natural inclinations, his self-determination, his growth through trial and error, and the slow flowering of a musical vision, meticulously cultivated by the educational opportunities provided to him by his family and his many devoted mentors. Using existing well-known and recently uncovered biographical data, as well as both published and unpublished song juvenilia and mature songs, this dissertation examines the importance of Barber's earliest musical and academic training in relationship to his development as a song composer.

Spengane, Zandile Namhla Elizabeth. "Blood and virus detection on barber hair clippers." Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30855.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Bleeding from the popular clean-shave ‘chiskop’ haircut was recently reported as prevalent in South Africa (SA), a country with 6.9 million HIV-infected people. Objectives. To investigate the prevalence of barber hair clipper contamination with blood and HIV and hepatitis B viruses. Methods: Fifty barbers from three townships in Cape Town, SA, were invited to participate. One clipper from each barber was collected immediately after it had been used for a cleanshave haircut. Each clipper was rinsed with phosphate-buffered saline and then submerged in viral medium. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify the bloodspecific RNA marker haemoglobin beta (HBB), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV. Results: The clean-shave haircut was the most common haircut requested by clients (78%). Of the clippers collected, 42% were positive for HBB, confirming detection of blood, none were positive for HIV, and 4 (8%) were positive for HBV. Two clippers (clippers 16 and 20) were positive on qualitative HBV PCR. HBV DNA from clipper 16 clustered with genotype A sequences from SA, India, Brazil and Martinique, while clipper 20 clustered with SA genotype D sequences. The clipper 20 sequence was identical to a subtype D sequence (GenBank accession AY233291) from Gauteng, SA. Conclusion: This study confirms that there is significant contamination of barber hair clippers with blood and blood-borne viruses. Hepatitis B was detected with enough DNA copies to pose a risk of transmitting infection. Although HIV was not detected in this small study, the risk of transmission should be quantified. Further studies to investigate barber clipper sterilization practices and whether the clean-shave hairstyle is an independent risk factor for HIV, HBV and hepatitis C virus infections are warranted. Public education on individual clipper ownership (as is the case with a toothbrush) should be advocated for clean-shave and blade-fade haircuts.

Abstract:
The music of Samuel Barber is well known in the vocal, piano, and string literature; however, little of his chamber music involves woodwinds, and in particular, only one work involves the woodwind quintet. Summer Music, originally commissioned as a septet, developed after the premiere of the work into the woodwind quintet version, with the assistance of the New York Woodwind Quintet. Barber is considered a contemporary .romantic. composer, evidenced through his use of lyricism. Summer Music, a standard in the woodwind quintet literature, should be included in every professional flutist's repertoire. The intent of this dissertation is to consider Barber's use of lyricism as a determinant of the form of Summer Music, as well as to compare the differences between the manuscript and the published edition.

Barber, Quinton Raymond. "Polycyclic propargylamines as multi-functional neuro-protective agents / Quinton Raymond Barber." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4133.

Full text
Abstract:
The pathology of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), is caused by the abnormal loss of neuronal cells in certain areas of the brain. It consequently causes an imbalance of certain neurotransmitter levels in the brain, giving rise to the characteristic signs and symptoms of these diseases. Ultimately it compromises the normal functionality and well being of the individual suffering from the disease, thus making it an absolute necessity to create compounds which would halt this neuronal breakdown process, but will also aid in treating the signs and symptoms. The abnormal death of neurons in the central nervous system of individuals suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, takes place by an intrinsic cell suicide program known as apoptosis. This process is triggered by several stimuli, and consists of numerous pathways and cascades, each one having an influence on the other, ultimately leading to the death of the cells. In PD and AD it has been shown that there are elevated levels of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), which not only acts indirectly as a trigger to the apoptotic process, but also gives rise to some of the signs and symptoms of the diseases. In the current study the approach was to develop multifunctional drugs, which would halt the neuronal breakdown process, but will also eliminate some of the signs and symptoms of diseases such as AD and PD. Keeping this in mind we focused on the structures of rasagiline, pentacyclo-undecane and amantadine. Rasagiline is a well known MAO-B inhibitor with promising neuroprotective activity, which can be attributed to its propargylamine moiety. The pentacyclo-undecane and amantadine polycyclic structures are highly non-polar compounds, with high potential to contribute in the transport of drugs across the blood-brain barrier and across cell membranes into cells. It was thus a rational decision to incorporate the structures of propargylamine and the polycyclic cages into the structures of the synthesised compounds. In synthesising the test compounds, several experimental procedures and methods, both conventional and modern, were utilised. In most of the synthetic routes either propargylamine, propargylbromide or ethynyl magnesium bromide were utilised together with pentacyclo-undecane or amantadine as reagents. The reaction of these substances afforded the target compounds. Most of the reactions took place without the necessity of a catalysing agent, even though an external source of energy was necessary to provide heat for the reactions to take place. Each compound was synthesised to evaluate the activity and benefit of the presence of a certain group of atoms in the molecule. Some of these groups include a terminal acetylene group, an acetylene group between two non-polar groups, a secondary propargylamine connected to a polycyclic cage and a tertiary propargylamine in an aza polycyclic structure. These synthesised compounds were evaluated for anti-apoptotic as well as MAO-B inhibiting activity. The anti-apoptotic activity were evaluated in vitro using the Desphiper™ kit, which marks changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential, that takes place during apoptosis. The quantitative and qualitative detection of these processes were done by means of flow cytometry, which made it possible to determine what percentage of the cells in the samples were still viable after treatment with the synthesised compounds. For this purpose SK-NBE(2) neuroblastoma cells were used, and apoptosis was induced using a serum-deprivation model. Besides their anti-apoptotic activity, the synthesised compounds were also evaluated in vitro as competitive inhibitors of MAO-B using a spectrophotometric assay that utilised MMTP, an analogue of the neurotoxin MPTP as substrate, with baboon liver mitochondria serving as enzyme source. The potency of MAO-B inhibition was expressed as percentage inhibition of the enzyme. In evaluating the activity of the synthesised compounds, there was one compound, 8- phenylethynyl-8-hydroxy-pentacyclo[5.4.1.02'6.03,10.05,9]undecane, that had significant MAO-B inhibiting activity as well as significant anti-apoptotic activity. The other compounds of the series all had moderate to weak anti-apoptotic activity, and showed limited MAO-B inhibition. Having moderate to weak anti-apoptotic activity, these compounds can be used as leadcompounds in the development and design of more potent inhibitors. It was confirmed that when linked to a polycyclic cage structure, propargylamine still displayed potent antiapoptotic activity. It was also determined that a terminal acetylene group, as well as an acetylene group between two non-polar groups had comparable anti-apoptotic activity. The polycyclic propargylamines thus have potential as neuroprotective agents and further investigation is necessary to determine what their maximum benefit can be in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Barber, Alana Carlisle. "Considerations for rural residents undergoing radiation therapy for cancer treatment." Thesis, Montana State University, 2012. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2012/barber/BarberA0512.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Cancer is a disease that will affect roughly one in three Americans in their lifetime. Of those who choose to undergo cancer treatment, approximately 60% will be treated with radiation therapy (XRT). In order to contain health care delivery costs, specialty medical centers that offer XRT are often centralized, making access to necessary treatment difficult for rural residents. Researchers have identified accessibility to services, required travel, being away from family and friends, locating accommodations during treatment, financial burdens, emotional stress, quality of life, and treatment options as burdens to this population. Research has been conducted in other areas of the world to identify commonalities amongst rural residents undergoing XRT but no such studies have been conducted within the United States. The purpose of this study was to identify considerations for rural residents who have been diagnosed with cancer and are undergoing external beam radiation therapy for treatment. A convenience sample of rural residents who were currently or had in the last year received external beam XRT for cancer treatment at a regional cancer treatment center in south central Montana were asked to participate in this study. Surveys were mailed anonymously to 49 persons meeting study criteria. Twenty one surveys containing demographic, multiple choice, and Likert scale questions focusing on travel, lifestyle changes and accommodation during XRT, the financial implications and psychosocial significance of XRT, and treatment decisions were completed and returned. Responses to the survey were entered into a database where descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. The results suggest that travel and distance to services continues to be a challenge for most rural residents, that rural residents often alter lifestyles and believe costs are greater for them during XRT. Data also showed that participants did not base treatment decisions on cost or distance nor did they feel they were overly stressed or anxious during XRT. Barber, Loren Mickelle. "Distribution, characterization, and dietary risk assessment of indigenous salts in Mongolia's Darhad Valley." Thesis, Montana State University, 2008. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2008/barber/BarberL0808.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Natural salt deposits around the world are used as human and livestock dietary mineral sources. The nomadic herders of the Darhad Valley, in northern Mongolia, harvest the precipitate that forms around saline lakes throughout their valley. The precipitate is termed hujir, and the main harvest location is Tukh. Darhad people are concerned about the declining amount of a hujir in the Tukh precipitate area and are curious about possible health effects related to hujir consumption. These studies focus on formulating the best management practices for sustainable hujir harvest by evaluating factors influencing the formation of hujir, and by establishing the mineralogy and ionic concentrations in Tukh soil, water, and hujir through chemical and spatial analyses. A dietary risk assessment was also accomplished by obtaining consumption rates through interviews, and determining exposure values from the consumption rates and ionic concentrations. Exposures were compared to chronic oral endpoints to relate potential health risks. A map of Tukh was created using Global Positioning System and Geographic Information System technologies and acts as baseline spatial data on the area. Minerals present include trona, halite, calcite, and other evaporites. According to pH and EC results, the area used for human harvesting at Tukh is more saline than the remainder of the lake. The soil profile within the precipitate area showed a TDS of 49 mg/L and pH of 7.2 in the surface horizon relative to an EC of 0.4 mg/L and a pH of 6.4 lower in the profile. This indicates a presence of capillary rise from groundwater, resulting in evaporation and salt precipitate at the soil surface. High exposure of arsenic, antimony, and lead compared to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization endpoint values resulted in risk quotients of 33, 1.7, and 14, respectively, which create concern in the population's hujir consumption. Further epidemiological and biomonitoring research would provide insight in the health relationships to hujir consumption. Future research could benefit from the resulting spatial and chemical data completed in these studies.

Bachelor's thesis, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2018. http://tesis.pucp.edu.pe/repositorio/handle/123456789/10225.

Full text
Abstract:

Wilcox, John M. R. "The information Barber Pole: integrating white information and red intelligence in emerging conflicts." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/39037.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
Militaries operate increasingly in social terrain and must focus on civilian populations as much they do the belligerents that take refuge among them. Current intelligence and planning doctrine fails to meet the needs of the emerging information environments. Secret intelligence information and open source information must find a means of merging to generate a holistic view of the environment. The failure of the existing system leads to shortcomings in strategy development and operational design, which in turn yields imprecise applications of military power. To overcome this gap in structure and doctrine, this thesis explores a new methodology that merges information and intelligence where appropriate and develops a common understanding across levels of command. The Barber Pole process, as it is termed here, maximizes the use of existing structures, and capitalizes on resident professional military skills. The Barber Pole is a three-step process that flattens intelligence and information systems for the purposes of ensuring a common and shared understanding of the operating environment. These phases include the collection of information and provision of command guidance, the coordination and interpretation of collected data, and finally the production of plans tailored to the target population.

Lavoie, Chantel. "The province of the poetess: Chastity and the poetry of Pilkington, Barber and Grierson." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6890.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the poetry of three women included in Jonathan Swift's circle of friends in Dublin. The demands of chastity and related tensions for eighteenth-century women provide a context for the poems and reputations of Constantia Grierson, Laetitia Pilkington and Mary Barber. Chapter 1 provides personal histories and an overview of their relationships to Swift. Chapter 2 explores familial and gender issues alongside the problematic implications of appearing in print. The final chapter deals with the persona each poet created in order to realize her ambitions, and the dubious success with which publication was accomplished. Images of near-saint, coquette and righteous matron have informed speculation about Grierson, Pilkington, and Barber respectively, originating in Grierson's apparent lack of ambition. Pilkington's divorce and audacity in printing her memoirs, and Barber's emphasis that she wrote "to improve the minds of (her) children". Simplified versions of the lives of writing, women are a produce not only of (frequently misogynistic) misunderstandings; they also result from taking these poets at their word, believing the re-creations on the page.

Macchioni, Oscar Ernesto. "The tango in American piano music: Selected tangos by Thomson, Copland, Barber, Jaggard, Biscardi, and Bolcom." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290076.

Full text
Abstract:
This document represents research and analysis of tangos for solo piano composed by six American art music composers. The selected tangos are from 1920 to 1990. They are representative of diverse musical styles, including tonal and non-tonal musical languages, and both structural and improvisational writing. The first three chapters are dedicated to the study of the tango. Chapter II investigates origins of the tango and presents various theories and dances that influenced tango argentino. Also, in this chapter there is a discussion of what the author considers to be three main elements (musical cadence, choreography, and lyrics) that make tango argentino so distinctive from other tango traditions. Chapter III introduces the tango in the United States and its influence on art music composers. Chapter IV is dedicated to six leading American composers: Virgil Thomson, Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, David Jaggard, Chester Biscardi, and William Bolcom. Each one of these composers was attracted to the tango genre and expressed through his own musical utterance, the diverse trends in tango styles in the twentieth century. An ample appendix lists tangos for piano by composers from around the world. Finally, a recording of the works analyzed can be obtained through the University of Arizona School of Music and Dance, or through the author's web page at www.oscarmacchioni.net.

Mak, Kwok-kin Corey, and 麥國健. "The heritage of hair-cutting: the tangible and intangible heritage of Shanghai-style barber shops in Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2012. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B48348223.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1940 and 1950, many Shanghainese immigrants carried their capital and skills into Hong Kong. Among these immigrants were Shanghai-style barbers who brought with them their concept of grooming to retune and upgrade Hong Kong’s grooming culture in those earlier times, and who found that the changing situation in the British Colony allowed them to express their professional skills in this new environment. The distinctive characteristics of Shanghai-style barber shops include three elements: such as image and style, male grooming skills and shop services, all elements highlight the ideas of professional, hygienic and enjoyable experience with a customer-first orientation in whole grooming process. The numbers of Shanghai style barber shops are getting less-and-less in Hong Kong in recent years. For a large part of the latter half of the 20th century, this Shanghai-style grooming service was part of the everyday lives of Hong Kong people. Because of some existing challenges in the survival of Shanghai-style barber shops such as retirement of barbers, lack of new blood participation, rising rents and the changing of trends, now Shanghai-style barbering is a sun-set trade. It is living heritage, but one that is not sustainable due to changing expressed needs and tastes, and therefore this characteristic service with its tonsorial skills and distinctive business form needs to be documented before it disappears from the cultural landscape of Hong Kong. Published studies of Shanghai-style barber seem to focus only on the history of the trade and its practitioners, in terms of where they came from and why they came to Hong Kong. There is almost no published record of Shanghai-style barbers’ distinctive skills, traditions and ethnicity, or of the differences of characteristics such as business form, tonsorial skills, and people services in barber shops between Shanghai-style barbers and Cantonese barbers. In other words, the character-defining elements (CDEs) that identify the trade as Shanghainese barbers have not been documented – filling this research gap is what this dissertation is about.

Eckenroth, Karen Louise. ""It is a song that I have made": A performer's perspective on ten early songs of Samuel Barber." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284070.

Full text
Abstract:
Samuel Barber is one of America's most popular composers of the solo song. His interest in this genre began in 1917, at age seven when he composed his first song, titled "Sometime". This interest was to last a lifetime, with his total song output numbering 106 (48 published and 58 unpublished); comprising over half of his more than two hundred compositions. In 1994 G. Schirmer, Inc. published a collection of ten early songs written by Barber between the years 1925 and 1937. Prior to the availability of these pieces, Barber's Opus 2--"The Daisies", "With Rue My Heart Is Laden", and "Bessie Bobtail"--were the only published songs reflecting his earliest compositional style. These ten new songs provide insights regarding this early style, and they display musical components, such as quartal and quintal harmonies, elements of church modes, counterpoint, and extensive word-painting, which Barber uses and solidifies in later works. These early songs are a delightful addition to the solo song repertoire. The vocal lines are flowing and effortless, emotions portrayed within the songs are always well balanced, and the accompaniments, in addition to supporting the vocal line, serve to set the tone of each piece. The variety of technical demands varies and many of the songs are accessible to young singers. Most importantly, they offer a perception into Barber's growth as a composer making them an invaluable resource to anyone interested in the development of the American Art Song.

Abstract:
In this study the author develops a methodology for the study of the Samuel Barber Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 14 by analyzing the stylistic components of the work, presenting important pedagogical principles, and offering an array of performance practice techniques. The primary tool used to formulate the methodology was a survey of exceptional violinists and pedagogues. Twenty-six professional violinists responded to a survey that asked their suggestions for preparing and performing five specific excerpts from the Concerto. The compilation of the responses provides an invaluable guide for violinists who are studying or teaching this staple of the instrument’s repertoire.

Linster, Jillian Faith. "Books, bodies, and the "great labor" of Helkiah Crooke's Mikrokosmographia." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5551.

Full text
Abstract:
Helkiah Crooke (1576-1648) was a London physician who wrote the first comprehensive anatomy manual in the English vernacular, Mikrokosmographia (1615). This dissertation demonstrates the significance of Crooke’s example for several lines of inquiry. His story shows the essential role of humanistic study in the development of an effective early modern physician. It also demonstrates how reading an anatomy manual as a literary work illuminates the paradigms underpinning the relationships between books and bodies in the early modern era. Furthermore, examining the performative aspects of the physician’s profession alongside dramatic literary characters elucidates the relationship between the professional sphere and the public stage and, consequently, the ramifications of that relationship for Crooke’s historical characterization. Ultimately, the project shows how and why Crooke and Mikrokosmographia are perfectly positioned to lend insight on a large number of medical practices and experiences in the early modern period. While scholars frequently cite the book as a reference on early modern thinking about bodies, almost all of this use has consisted of material excerpted without systematic analysis of the way the text is put together or close examination of the cultural conditions of the book’s production. Furthermore, several of the extant accounts of Crooke’s life contradict one another, neglect crucial evidence, or make unsupported claims, leaving confusing questions regarding the education and career of the man who authored this important text. This dissertation rectifies several misconceptions regarding Crooke and his book, providing new interpretation of the creation of Mikrokosmographia and Crooke’s memory in the history of medicine. The project explores the anatomy manual’s cultural currency and the relationship of the book and its author to contemporary writing more readily recognized today as literary works. It also questions existing categorizations of early medical texts as it works to demonstrate the role of such writing in shaping authors’ identities and careers as well as affecting the lives and health of the public, recovering the fullest picture of Crooke’s life story and the most extensive bibliography of his writing to date.
