Abstract:
Barber shops are potential medium for transmission of BBVI and several communicable diseases as barber shops are visited by general population. Poor knowledge and improper hygiene practices can lead to transmission of infections. Limited number of studies is done in India about knowledge, attitude, and practice of barbers regarding transmission and prevention of BBVI. To assess knowledge, attitude, and practices of barbers regarding Blood Borne Viral Infections and their association with sociodemographic factors. A workplace-based cross-sectional study was conducted to find out the knowledge, attitude, and practices of barbers regarding Blood Borne Viral Infections in South-West district of Delhi. A total of 150 barbers were included in the study. Majority of barbers had poor knowledge (75.3%), almost one fourth of the study participants had moderate knowledge (22.7%) and only (2.0%) of barber had good knowledge about BBVI. Majority of barbers had poor attitude and practices (74.0%), one fourth of the study participants had moderate attitude and practices (22.7%) and only 1(0.7%) barber had good attitude and practices towards BBVI. Most of the barbers had poor knowledge, attitude and practice regarding BBVI. Knowledge, attitude, and practices was found to be significant with education and registration of shop.

Abstract:
I and my son are bakers and barbers, you and your sons are lapidaries and gardeners, but if you bid one of your sons be barber, a second baker, a third lapidary and a fourth gardener, all is confusion, and how can good come out of it? Furthermore he is no barber nor baker who does not belong to the Guild of the Barbers and the Guild of the Bakers. If your son [does not go] to the peshkadim and rank himself among the apprentices; next to the tehaoosh, to bid him inscribe his name on the rolls; then to the kihaya, to pay him toll, how should he be a member of the guild? Ask of the scheikh if I have not spoken well.

Abstract:
<p>Being professional barbers from Garut—known as ASGAR, short for Asli Garut, which means ‘of Garut origin’—has been the main source of income for most men residing in Kampung Peundeuy, Banyuresmi Village, Garut Regency, West Java. The profession is considered so successful in providing financial welfare for the villagers and improving their social status that many of the residents decide to leave the village to expand their business elsewhere, especially in Jakarta and other big cities in West Java. This<br />phenomenon has intensified since the 2000s until the residents finally dub Kampung Peundeuy as a “barber village” in West Java. In order to preserve their hometown’s reputation as a “barber village”, the residents feel the need to preserve and pass on their shaving and hairdressing skills to their relatives and children. As a result, what was once only a common profession now has been considered as part of the village’s tradition. Furthermore, the barber profession has spurred various changes in Kampung Peundeuy, including their livelihood, cultural identity, and social life. Therefore, in order<br />to examine the relationship between barber as a profession dan village transformation, the research attempted to answer these two questions: (1) How did the profession became a tradition among Kampung Peundeuy’s residents? and (2) How has the barber profession stimulated the transformation of the village? This research incorporated thoughts proposed by Koentjaraningrat (1981) who studied community problems, by Luji (2020) who examined profession as a form of culture, and McGee (2001 &amp; 2008) who proposed the theory of semi-urbanization. This study applied the qualitative method, which included the ethnographic method, non-participatory observation, and interviews to collect data. This study is in line with Luji’s (2020) finding that the tradition of becoming barbers was produced and consumed by the residents of Kampung Peundeuy for years<br />by means of power relation among family members. Families encouraged their male members (parents, husbands, sons, or sons-in-law) to become barbers because the job is considered profitable. Moreover, further changes do not occur naturally but are spurred by semi-urbanization when residents carry their profession to big cities. Semiurbanization (McGee 2008) encourages the phenomenon of desakota (literally “urbanvillage”)<br />which describes the influence of urban lifestyle on Kampung Peundeuy. Thus, it can be concluded that the barber profession influences the transformation of Kampung Peundeuy, and this can occur due to the strong encouragement among its residents to both pass down the hairdressing skills to the next generation and to enter the profession.</p>

Abstract:
Background: Pakistan's being a country placed in intermediate endemicity zone of HBV and HCV, with rising population, there is lack scarcity of knowledge about transmission of risk factors specially unorthodox and frequency of this health challenge. Methods: A retrospective case control study where case records of all patients aged from 18 - 70 years from 2012 to 2017 with either gender diagnosed as chronic hepatitis B and C were included. Information about shave from barber-shop, sharing of toothbrush at home, tattooing, cautery, and ear piercing were collected. Information about unorthodox risks for transmission of HBV and HCV, like skin branding, cupping of blood, circumcision by the barber, sharing of tooth brushes and leech therapy was collected. Results: Among 1134 patients of chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and chronic hepatitis C (HCV), Age > 35 years, shave from barber and dental treatment were found to be risk factor for both HCV and HBV transmission. Amongst unorthodox risk factors like skin branding, cupping of blood, circumcision by the barber, sharing of tooth brushes and leech therapy, only cupping of blood (Hijama) was a significant risk for transmission of both HBV and HCV. Conclusion: Viral related chronic hepatitis is frequently reported problem in this part of the world where HCV supersedes HBV. Socieodemographic factor like age > 35 year, shave from barbers and dental treatment were risk factors for transmission of both HCV and HBV. Among orthodox routes of transmission blood cupping (hijama) has shown as a significant transmission risk for both HCV and HBV.

Abstract:
Most individuals more easily recall the occupation of an acquaintance than that person's name. Three experiments ( ns = 117, 42, and 36) were designed to investigate whether this shortcoming arises because people are likely to ignore any meaningful information provided by a name. In Exp. 1 college students viewed a series of faces, each given a name and occupation rated high or low in imageability. The students were told to picture the names, picture the occupations or were given no picturing instructions. In Exp. 2 the same words were identified as occupations of depicted individuals for some participants and as names for others. In Exp. 3 students wrote words that came to mind in response to words sometimes labeled as names and sometimes as occupations. Analysis showed that occupations were recalled better than names (Exps. 1 and 2). Picturing instructions improved face-name but not face-occupation recall (Exp. 1). Increased imageability enhanced occupation but not name recall (Exps. 1 and 2), and college students produced more associations to words labeled as occupations than the same words labeled as names (Exp. 3). These results suggest that people ignore the most meaningful sense of a name, contributing to poor face-name recall.

Full text
Abstract:
The magnitude of the barber-pole illusion is measured as a function of the contrast, orientation, and phase difference between the moving ‘barber-pole’ grating and a moving ‘surround’ grating that forms the aperture surface. It is found that as the difference between the barber-pole grating and the surround grating increases, the influence of surround motion on barber-pole motion decreases (resulting in an increase in the magnitude of the barber-pole illusion). This pattern of results is interpreted as evidence for competition between processes that detect the motion of line terminators along the length of the rectangular aperture and processes that detect grating motion in directions perpendicular to grating orientation.

Abstract:
George Frideric Handel was born in Halle (Saale) in Germany. After initial musical education in Germany and Italy, he came to London as a young man and spent the rest of his life in England. Until recently, little has been written of his early life in either the English or the German literature, and it is not widely known that he was the son of Georg Händel, a barber-surgeon of repute. When his father's name is mentioned, it is usually to claim that he actively discouraged his son's musical education. Georg Händel lived in a turbulent time; he became an eminent surgeon who served as valet and barber to the Courts of Saxony and Brandenburg, as well as a distinguished citizen of Halle. In describing his surgical duties, we show how these differed from those of barbers in England and France at that time. Barbers in Germany were less controlled, freer to practise as they pleased, and Händel himself had important duties in public health and forensic medicine. George Frideric was the first son of the second marriage, born when his father was 63 years of age. We aim also to dispel the notion that Händel's influence on his son's career was as obstructive as has been claimed, but rather that he was a responsible father with his children's interests at heart. This is shown in the success achieved by all his children, most of whom followed their father into medicine, while George Frideric became the most famous of them all, being regarded by posterity as one of the greatest composers.

Abstract:
We report the results of psychophysical experiments with the so-called barber pole stimulus providing new insights on the neuronal processes underlying the analysis of moving features such as terminators or line-endings. In experiment 1, we show that the perceived direction of a barber pole stimulus, induced by line-ending motion, is highly dependent on the spatial frequency and contrast of the grating stimulus: perceived direction is shifted away from the barber pole illusion at high spatial frequency in a contrast dependent way, suggesting that line-ends are not processed at high spatial scales. In subsequent experiments, we use a contrast adaptation paradigm and a masking paradigm in an attempt to assess the spatial structure and location of the receptive fields that process line-endings. We show that the adapting stimulus that weakens most the barber pole illusion is localized within the barber pole stimulus and not at line-endings' locations. Current models of line-endings' motion processing are discussed in the light of these psychophysical results.

Abstract:
AbstractCounterclockwise barber pole sign (also known as reverse barber pole sign) is an angiographic sign described in patients with small bowel volvulus due to counterclockwise twisting of mesenteric vessels around the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). The sign was first described in a catheter angiographic examination; however, the concept can be translated to the display methods of computed tomography (CT). This sign can be depicted clearly on multiplanar and three-dimensionally rendered images of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) examination. In the current report, the reverse barber pole sign is illustrated in a child with partial small bowel volvulus secondary to mesenteric lymphatic malformation. The clinical course, management, and imaging appearances are presented, highlighting the observation of counterclockwise barber pole sign on MDCT imaging. The importance of the sign in identification of volvulus and implications for patient management are emphasized.

Abstract:
Abstract:
In 1990 in Griswold, Connecticut, archaeologists excavated a burial found in a “skull and crossbones” orientation. The lid of the 19th century coffin had brass tacks that spelled “JB55”, the initials of the person lying there and age at death. JB55 had evidence of chronic pulmonary infection, perhaps tuberculosis. It is possible that JB55 was deemed a vampire due to his disease, and therefore had to be “killed” by mutilating his corpse. In an attempt to reveal the identity of JB55, DNA testing was performed. Ancestry informative single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis using the Precision ID Ancestry Panel indicated European ancestry. A full Y-chromosomal short tandem repeat (Y-STR) profile was obtained, belonging to haplogroup R1b. When the Y-STR profile was searched in the publicly accessible FamilyTreeDNA R1b Project website, the two closest matches had the surname “Barber”. A search of historical records led to a death notice mentioning John Barber, whose son Nathan Barber was buried in Griswold in 1826. The description of Nathan Barber closely fits the burial of “NB13,” found near JB55. By applying modern forensic DNA tools to a historical mystery, the identity of JB55 as John Barber, the 19th century Connecticut vampire, has been revealed.
