Abstract:

Abstract:
Hydrocarbon exploration basically requires effective drilling and efficient overpowering of frictional and viscosity forces. Normally, frictional power losses occur in deep well systems and it is essential to analyse each component of any well system to determine where exactly pressure is lost, and this can be done using Nodal Analysis. In this study, nodal analysis has been carried out with the use of PROSPER, a software for well performance, design and optimisation. Artificial lifts can then be used to solve the problem of frictional power losses. To increase the production of Barbra 1 well in the Niger Delta and hence extend its functional life, we have applied nodal analysis. Modelling results for three artificial lift methods; continuous gas lift, intermittent gas lift and electrical submersible pump were found to be 1734.93 bbl/day, 451.50 bbl/day and 2869 bbl/day respectively. The output from the well performance without artificial lift was 1370.99 bbl/day by applying Darcy’s model. Meanwhile, the output from the well without artificial lift is 89.90 bbl/day when aided with productivity index (PI) entry, the normal model for intermittent gas lift. Hence, from the comparative analysis of the results obtained from this study, it was deduced that when artificial lifts are employed, the well output increases significantly from 1370.99bbl/day to 2869 bbl/day (electrical submersible pump). This study concludes that wells such as Barbra 1 are good candidates for artificial lift, and this is evidenced by increasing productivity.

Abstract:
This autoethnographic performance uses the lyrics, mode, and performative stylistic of Barbra Streisand’s famous song as a provocation for exploring the ways in which young adoptees sometimes idealize an imaginary love that is not limited to parent–child but rather floats out like a lyrical overture into the broader landscape of “misty watercolor memories” of a wish for the way things might have been. When Barbra asks Can it be that it was all so simple then?, the adoptee answers no, and lives the need in families that What’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget. Adoptee consciousness, like Braidotti’s nomad, abandons any “nostalgia for fixity” and in so doing is able to cultivate an “intense desire to go on trespassing, transgressing” for survival and “thrival.” In this way, Streisand’s song represents a critical moment of letting go within my own developing nomadic queer and adoptee consciousness—a letting go of an idealized “way we were” and a redirection toward a future-looking nomadic subject. Through this queer lens, Barbra’s nostalgic lyrics might be considered a “queer retrosexuality” for a time, place, and kind of love and belonging that has never existed and is increasingly culturally crippling.

Decamp, Eleanor Sian. "Performing barbers, surgeons and barber-surgeons in early modern English literature." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:42cdcea1-56b8-4d3d-961f-d2a3e7fa0d13.

Abstract:
This study addresses the problem critics have faced in identifying contemporary perceptions of the barber, surgeon and barber-surgeon in early modernity by examining the literature, predominantly the drama, from the period. The name ‘barber-surgeon’ is not given formally to any character in extant early modern plays; only within the dialogue or during stage business is a character labelled the barber-surgeon. Barbers and surgeons are simultaneously separate and doubled-up characters. The differences and cross-pollinations between their practices play out across the literature and tell us not just about their cultural, civic and occupational histories but also about how we interpret patterns in language, onomastics, dramaturgy, materiality, acoustics and semiology. Accordingly, the argument in this study is structured thematically and focuses on the elements of performance, moving from discussions of names to discussions of settings and props, disguises, stage directions and semiotics, and from sound effects and music, to voices and rhetorical turns. In doing so, it questions what it means in early modernity to have a developed literary identity, or be deprived of one. The barber-surgeon is a trope in early modern literature because he has a tangible social impact and an historical meaning derived from his barbery and surgery roots, and consequently a richly allusive idiom which exerted attraction for audiences. But the figure of the barber-surgeon can also be a trope in investigating how representation works. An aesthetic of doubleness, which this study finds to be diversely constructed, prevails in barbers’, surgeons’ and barber-surgeons’ literary conception, and the barber-surgeon in the popular imagination is created from opposing cultural stereotypes. The literature from the period demonstrates why a guild union of barbers and surgeons was never harmonious: they are opposing dramaturgical as well as medical figures. This study has a wide-ranging literary corpus, including early modern play texts, ballads, pamphlets, guild records, dictionaries, inventories, medical treatises and archaeological material, and contributes to the critical endeavours of the medical humanities, cultural materialists, theatre historians and linguists.

Abstract:

Fero, Barbara <1983&gt. "Studies on the dual in Mycenaean, in the Homeric poetry and in the Attic Theatre of the 5th century — morphological, dialectal and stylistical variations." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2013. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/5940/1/fero-barbara-tesi.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The present dissertation focuses on the dual number in Ancient Greek in a diachronical lapse stretching from the Mycenaean age to the Attic Drama and Comedy of the 5th century BC. In the first chapter morphological issues are addressed, chiefly in a comparative perspective. The Indo European evidence on the dual is hence gathered in order to sketch patterns of grammaticalisation and paradigmatisation of specific grams, growing increasingly functional within the Greek domain. In the second chapter syntactical problems are tackled. After a survey of scholarly literature on the Greek dual, we engage in a functional and typological approach, in order to disentangle some biased assessments on the dual, namely its alleged lack of regularity and intermittent agreement. Some recent frameworks in General Linguistics provide useful grounds for casting new light on the subject. Internal Reconstruction, for instance, supports the facultativity of the dual in each and every stage of its development; Typology and the Animacy Hierarcy add precious cross linguistical insight on the behaviour of the dual toward agreement. Glaring differences also arise as to the adoption — or avoidance — of the dual by different authors. Idiolectal varieties prove in fact conditioned by stylistical and register necessity. By means of a comparison among Epics, Tragedy and Comedy it is possible to enhance differences in the evaluation of the dual, which led sometimes to forms of ‘censure’ — thus triggering the onset of competing strategies to express duality. The last two chapters delve into the tantalising variety of the Homeric evidence, first of all in an account of the notorious issue of the Embassy of Iliad IX, and last in a commentary of all significant Homeric duals — mostly represented by archaisms, formulae, and ad hoc coinages.

Aix-Marseille 1, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002AIX10032.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the problematic relationship between architectural pleasure and well-being or happiness. It attempts to update the ancient philosophical debate on the conflict between the pleasures promoted by hedonism, and the pleasures and virtues of well-being promoted by eudemonia in terms of architectural design through the lens of today’s positive psychology movement. This emerg¬ing field has identified, to a limited extent, when pleasure and well-being can conflict resulting in addiction, while at other times pleasure serves as a pump to the higher echelons of well-being, or what Aristotle calls eudaimonia. This paper attempts to identify the same for architecture. Since Vitruvius, architects have written on our preferences which appear to bring pleasure – some with empirical evidence. By taking stock of architectural writings and program elements that aim to deliver pleasure, this paper asks which of these resonate with philosophical and positive psychology findings on higher pleasures. Particularly relevant are the findings of psychologist Barbra Fredrickson’s broaden and build theory of positive emotions which sheds light on how design delight may lead to positive psychology’s promotion of higher forms of well-being such as: engagement, relationships or sense of community, meaning and achievement. The programming and design of Helsinki’s new central library by ALA Architects illustrates virtuous pleasures that serve a higher purpose in a country and city that ranks first in Gallup’s 2019 and 2020 World Happiness Reports.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), where an endovascular graft (EVG) — a stented vascular graft — is implanted intraluminally into the AAA has shown excellent short term outcome. However, long term outcome of implanted EVGs is fraught with new complications, the most severe of which is endoleak from graft migration, which can lead to re-pressurization of the AAA and potentially rupture. Graft migration is defined as the distal drift of an implanted EVG of 5mm or more from its initial anchor site (Figure 1). There have been many design changes to help decrease the rate of EVG migration including the addition of proximal attachment barbs to grafts to help secure them to the aortic wall. However, studies show that freedom from migration rates have not significantly increased for those grafts containing barbs compared to grafts without barbs [1]. We believe that controlled studies of endovascular graft parameters can lead to improvements in its design that increase graft attachment strength and hence decrease the risk of migration. The aim of the current study was to assess a key design variable in barbed grafts namely, graft oversizing (GO), defined as the ratio of expanded graft dia to aorta dia. We sought to assess the relationship between GO and attachment strength in barbed EVGs. Specifically, we hypothesized that a high GO will impede the ability of the EVG barbs to effectively penetrate the aortic wall.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Williams, Cameron. Channel Islands National Park: Terrestrial vegetation monitoring annual report - 2020. National Park Service, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299696.

Abstract:
This report presents the data collected in 2020 as part of the long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring program at Channel Islands National Park. The purpose of this monitoring program is to document long-term trends in the park’s vegetation communities. Data are collected from 30-m-long transects using a point-line intercept method. In the past, each transect was sampled annually. However, beginning in 2012 the program began adding randomly located transects to improve the representativeness of the sampling, and transitioned to a rotating panel design. Now only a core subset of the transects are surveyed annually. Non-core transects are assigned to one of four panels, each of which is surveyed once every four years. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused a global pandemic that prevented field data collection from most of the transects scheduled for 2020. As a result, just 29 of the 127 transects scheduled were visited, distributed as follows: Santa Barbara Island (n = 18), Santa Cruz Island (n = 11). The small size of this 2020 dataset offers limited comparisons to previous years. The program also planned to install 19 new transects on Santa Rosa and San Miguel islands to complete the probabilistic component of the study design (Tiszler et al. 2016a), but the safety response to COVID-19 did not permit these installations. Key 2020 results and interpretation: For the transects visited at both islands in 2020, a long-term decline in mean absolute cover, measured as the mean number of taxa intersecting each point along a transect, was apparent. Annual rainfall correlated positively with mean absolute cover of vegetation. Six vegetation communities were visited at Santa Barbara Island compared to nine at Santa Cruz Island, despite the smaller number of transects surveyed at the latter. Mean absolute cover at both islands together averaged 87%, with native plants covering 44% and non-natives covering 39%. Among vegetation communities, mean absolute cover ranged from a high of 137% in a Lyonothamnus grove to a low of 32% in a riparian community where few plants were encountered along one transect. Mean absolute cover was higher at Santa Cruz Island (105%) than Santa Barbara Island (77%), and mean absolute native cover followed the same pattern (57% vs 36%). For both islands combined, mean richness per transect was 11 taxa. Compared to Santa Barbara Island, Santa Cruz Island supported higher overall mean species richness (14 vs 9 taxa) and higher species evenness (0.70 vs 0.55). Santa Cruz Island’s higher absolute cover, higher native species cover, higher species richness, and higher species evenness indicate that its vegetation is in better overall condition compared to Santa Barbara Island, and that the rate of recovery after overgrazing is faster at Santa Cruz Island than Santa Barbara Island.
