Abstract:
This thesis is about the continuing life of Balinese culture and traditions currently under threat from unregulated economic development, mass tourism, and migration. Critical to this study are considerations surrounding the control of land and its improvements, as well as the success and failure of urban planning within the sphere of cultural conservation. The thesis argues that ???State planning systems as imposed by the Indonesian government are inappropriate in the Balinese context.??? While this statement seems fairly straightforward on the surface, it involves a complex understanding of the forces mentioned above, of their interaction and their effects on local culture. This study adopts a hermeneutic approach to theory seeking greater depth of meaning rather than discovering new facts, and embodies three main strategies. The first explains the relationship between society and space using a cultural matrix derived from anthropologist E.T.Hall. The second strategy deploys qualitative research method using focus groups, and third, it uses in-depth personal surveys at physical sites. The thesis therefore reveals the eroding impacts of tourism on local culture. Focusing on territoriality, it embraces two contradicting sets of values represented in the traditional Balinese system of Adat, and those of the market-based system of the Indonesian State. Resulting conflicts are demonstrated through specific and generic case studies. Here, the dominant position of modern state planning establishes the legal foundation on which capitalist practices, the dominating role of private enterprise, corruption, and collusionary attitudes are nourished. While the role of the government in promoting tourism, and the economic significance of the industry are acknowledged, the study measures these against the costs of such advantages to the Balinese way of life. Overall, the thesis reflects upon ongoing territorial problems that have been experienced in Bali for more than forty years. It provides an in depth analysis of how state imposed planning systems are locked in critical conflict with the proven and functioning traditional Balinese Adat. Finally, the necessary features of future planning systems are proposed in order to revitalize local culture. Hence the thesis demonstrates that modern systems of planning are inappropriate to Balinese cultural conservation.

Abstract:
The big cities in Sweden are growing, due to the phenomenon of densification. This also includes the city of Malmö. At the same time, it has been noted in the media that there is a general concern that children and children’s places in the city are forgotten in city-planning. In a collaboration between Malmö University and Malmö city via ISU (Institutet för hållbar stadsutveckling), we therefor chose to study children's outdoor environments in the ongoing densification of Malmö based on three different themes; Swedish legislation & guidelines, socioeconomic differences & living conditions, and children's needs for play & exercise. The result shows that the municipal of Malmö works actively with children and their outdoor environments from a child-perspective. Although the different informants in our study prioritizes different interests in the ongoing densification, we consider that the city have the ambition that the best interests of children should be in focus at all time.

Abstract:

Zambia is a highly urbanized country with 60% of its urban population residing in low cost areas also called peri-urban, slum or informal settlements. The increase in urban population attributed to rapid migration and urbanization due to political and economic changes has taken a toll on service provision as the infrastructure development and service provision has failed to meet the demand. For the 33 peri-urban areas in Lusaka, the water supply and sanitation has been poor, inadequate and unreliable with the coverage being slightly above 50% for water while 90% of the urban population does not have access to the much needed sanitation. The low coverage is a result of lack the financial capacity on the part of the service providers to extend services to un served areas.

This research focuses on the strategies to provide sustainable water and sanitation services to peri-urban areas to ensure improved accessibility through the expansion of infrastructure and attainment of full cost recovery. In this era of increasing migration to unplanned settlements where the services are inadequate, alternatives to public provision of water and sanitation services need to be put in place. One of the alternatives is the public-private partnership which encompasses the society, private and the civil society. As has been found in the study the best alternative should not only be completely bottom up but should also be more demand driven and be able to provide for greater contributions from the affected communities.

The hypothesis of the study is to ascertain if provision of water supply to the Peri-Urban Areas (PUAs) can be achieved through the partnership between the water utility and the small scale water providers. Therefore, the objectives of the research are to: evaluate and compare the current service provision to the peri-urban areas by the utility and small scale providers in terms of technical, social and institutional arrangements and determine the best way of ensuring sustained service provision to peri urban areas and show how partnership can be the best solution to improving service delivery to these areas.

Service provision in PUAs can not be achieved without the involvement of all the stakeholders especially the community who are also the users and whose major role is paying for the service to enhance sustainability. In this study the Small Scale Water Providers (SSWP) users were found to be satisfied with the service provided than the utility users who felt that more needed to be done. The two providers are found to have different strengths which when combined would enhance service provision. The collaboration between utility with its competence in water supply, technical installations, water quality testing and SSWP with theirs in community involvement, cost recovery, effective operation and maintenance and demand driven water schemes have to be merged to achieve the intended goal and it is also an indication that the two can complement each other. Utility should therefore consider opening investment accounts for all the areas so as to detach PUAs needs from the general plan and eventually budget as they would be self sustaining and enhance willingness to pay for the users. The SSWP should therefore be viewed as partners by all and licensing should be considered by the government for the benefit of the urban poor.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay, As only the deceived one can love, is to investigate the city character in the book Mina drömmars stad (City of dreams) by swedish author Per Anders Fogelström. I will do this by using narratology and making a narrative analysis of the city as a protagonist, with help from Jimmy Vulovic’s Narrativanalys (”narrative analysis”) and Claes Göran Holmberg’s & Anders Ohlssons Epikanalys – En introduktion (”epic analysis – an introduction”). All of these three theorists use the narratological tool-box of Gérard Genette, and I will use his tools in this essay as well. By doing this I will try to point out what this kind of personification of the city does to the story, and how it affects the readers point of view. One of the steps of the narrative analysis is to seek for information about the protagonist in its own environment, to see if there are any hidden clues about the identity of their character. In his book A universe of the mind – A semiotic theory of culture, Jurij M. Lotman writes about the semiosphere of the home, and how the ultimate place to seek for details about someone’s character is in someone’s home environment or surroundings. He demonstrates his thesis by analyzing the meaning of different homes in Michail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. Even if I try to read the city as a main character in City of dreams, it is inevitable that the city is also a stage, a scene and the environment where the story takes place. In the end of my analysis I will look to the environment of the city to try to draw conclusions about who this city of dreams really is.

This thesis is based on sustainable urbandevelopment and focuses particularlyon social sustainability, but also economicsustainability. The thesis addresseswhether the physical structure (streets, buildings, parks, roads) and land use (venues, function mixing, activity areas) cansupport crime prevention and reduce thefear of crime and the context for thissurvey is Herrgården in Malmö, Sweden. Basedon the theoretical principles; humanscale, populated urban space, natural surveillanceand management an understandingof the relationship between physical environment, crime and fear of crime is derived.A status report and a sustainabilityanalysis of the situation in the Herrgårdenis made. The area Herrgården is mappedand analyzed through an observationschedule based on the theoretical principles. The analysis of the physical structureis complemented by crime statistics, analysis of hotspots` geographic positiontogether with input from the security survey.Interviews with people working in thearea complements the study. The sustainability analysis shows thatHerrgården is a vulnerable and weak resourcearea and the residents lacks anchoringto the community by their low participation. The inhabitants of Herrgårdenfeel a low degree of satisfaction, trust, and collective strength, lowest for thedistrict.Furthermore, residents in Herrgården statethat they feel a high level of fear ofcrime and a high proportion of residentsrefrain activities due to fear of crime, although victimization is not remarkablyhigh.Analysis of the physical structure andland use based on the principles of thetheory; human scale, populated urban spaces, natural surveillance and managementshows that there still is much to do.The analysis of crime statistics shows threedistinctive hot spots in the area;Rosengårdsskolan, area with the allotmentsand the old mansion of Rosengård(today Drömmarnas hus, multiactivities forchildren and young). The sustainability analysis shows thatequality and participation in Herrgårdenneeds to be strengthened. In order to reducethe crime and the fear of crime in Herrgården efforts involving many stakeholdersand a broad collaboration, especiallyat the local level, is needed.Furthermore, it is necessary to have alocal connection to the residents especiallychildren and young people who make upa large proportion of the inhabitants. Tochange the physical structure to remainlong-term investment and not suffer fromvandalism and littering, it is importantthat people in the area have a voice andthe opportunity to make comments and suggestionsearly in the process. As part of the thesis a projectplan is established, aimed at strengthening primarilysocial but also economic sustainability, which includes developing a genericmodel for a local crime prevention andsecurity-building program that focus onphysical structure and land use, SAFE &SECURE. The project aims to reduce fear ofcrime and reduce opportunities for crimebut also to increase the equality and fullparticipation of people living and working.Keywords/tags: sustainable urban development, social sustainability, crime preventionand reduced fear of crime, urbanplanning, crime, safety, security, GIS,spatial planning, spatial analysis, landuse, populated urban space, city life, eyeson the street, participation, hot spots

Groundwater is an important source of water in Taiwan. Its quality needs proper management, so that groundwater quality should be controlled. The study foused on analyzing groundwater qualities of landfill sites in Bali, New Taipei City and Keelung City between October 2009 to March 2011. After analysis, The results showed a slightly increased levels of total phosphorus and NH3-N in upstream groundwater of landfill sites in Bali area, suggesting that maybe caused by human-derived pollutions or animal husbandry. The concentration of total phosphorus and NH3-N in downstream was lower, suggesting due to soil microorganism decomposition. In Bali area, red clay may cause higher iron concentration in the groundwater. In downstream groundwater, the level of hardness and the concentration of Pb were higher. It may be caused by rain washing. In upstream groundwater of landfill sites in Keelung area, the results showed a slightly increased level of total phosphorus , NH3-N and chemical oxygen demand, suggesting that may be caused by human-derived pollutions or burial ground. Otherwise, the levels are lower in the downstream due to soil microorganism decomposition. In upstream groundwater, the level of conductivity, total dissolved solids and hardness was higher. This is suggested to be related to properties of mineral soil or landfill leaching water. In Bali area, red clay usually possesses high level of iron, so the level of iron in the groundwater was significantly higher than that of Keelung area. The conductivity is higher in Bali area, and the reason presumably due to difference of soil properties. Overall, the groundwater quality of landfill areas did not occur leakage contamination during the investigation period.

This study aims to use the questionnaire and fieldwork survey method to investigate on recreational properties, tourism motivations, satisfaction and loyalty of Bali waterfront, New Taipei City and understand the status and problems of tourism development on this area. Finally we suggest the directions of development for tourism should be improved. Study results are summarized as follows: 1. During the Jiaqing period, storm destroyed the Bali port maritime features then Bali was gradual depressed and turned into a rural settlement dominated by farming, fishing. In the Japanese colonial era, it also continued this pattern, and started development of primary industries. Until 1974, operating in coordination with the Great Taipei's development and meeting the advent of urbanization and modernization, it began to carry out many constructions. Bali waterfront is now committed to promoting the development of the tourism industry. 2. The majority of respondents is female and age is between 20-40 years old. The education level is major in university and college level. Most respondents are unmarried and their occupation are business and services. Accounted for the majority, 30% respondents is without a fixed income and tourism spending is from NT$1,000 to less than NT$2,000 per month with average spent between NT$250 and less NT$500 each time in Bali waterfront on the left bank while willing to spend to NT$250 up to NT$750 is the majority. 3. Most respondents come from the New Taipei City and visited Bali waterfront in the past year just 1 time with more than 2 relatives and friends. They drove on their own and stayed less 4 hours. Tourism information is obtained through a relatives. 4. Tourism motivation of respondents is thought of leisure for a holiday, close to nature as the primary and care importantly public transportation convenience. Most satisfying tour is to relax, relieve pressure in Bali waterfront. The most unsatisfaction is food and product prices. Most respondents are willing to revisit and recommend Bali waterfront. 5. Respondents to Bali waterfront that their tourism motivation affect the loyalty of tourists which satisfaction of tourist recreation experience is higher, the visitor loyalty is also higher. 6. In IPA analysis, the "leisure to release pressure " dimension, most comfortable and spacious outdoor venue of " humanity space " and most of " environmental planning " dimension should be continued; promoting ecological awareness in " Recreation exploring "dimension, signs marked clearly and local characteristics in " humanity space " are its competitive advantage; tourist service center in " Famous product consumption " dimension and " "environmental planning", and "Recreational exploration" providing a wide range of activities and facilities is the disadvantage of development; the sanitation of toilets and surrounding environment cleaning in" Environmental planning " , and vehicle routes, garden and car park in " Humanity space ", is the threat for operating should be improved. 7. Problems currently facing the tourism for development of Bali waterfront: inadequate rest station, parking is not well planning, sanitation maintenance needs to be strengthened, the conflict between vehicles and road, environmental safety and Festival promotion is not enough. Improvement method should be from convenience filed as a starting point for the planning, Improving tourist-related facilities and service quality, and enhancing marketing it can bring more tourists, then enrich the local economy. 8. Specific recommendations should be strengthened for Bali waterfront as: development food specialties, provide sufficient resting place, increasing parking lot, strengthening environmental health management and advocacy, promoting transportation, planning multiple activities, strengthen planning vehicle traffic separation schemes, training the tourism guide and increasing marketing.

Consumers need for Wen-Dan pomelo in Taiwan is linked with Mid -Autumn Festival. However the harvest season of Wen-Dan pomelo is not quite matched with Mid -Autumn Festival, which results in the Wen-Dan pomelo price fluctuations. The original source of Taiwan Wen-Dan pomelo are mainly from Tainan Madou Dist.; Hualien Ruisui, Yuli and Shoufeng Township; New Taipei Bali Dist.; Yunlin County Douliou; Yilan Dongshan and Sanxing Township,; and Miaoli Xihu Township. Among these original places, the production area and volume of Bali Dist. are ranked third so to reflect the status of Taiwan Wen-Dan Pomelo industry. Hence, the cultivation and sales model and business model of Bali Wen-Dan pomelo industry were chosen to be the study case. Bali Dist., New Taipei City stands on the left bank of the Tamsui River mouth, which is in the Northern Taiwan, and on the west side of the Guanyin Mountain. It’s dry weather and exposed to the afternoon sun and offshore winds in summer. The place abounds with flavored and sweet Bali Wen-Dan pomelo due to the special geographic environment. Even without the halo effect from the legendarily historical background, the Bali Wen-Dan pomelo business still moves against the tide and experiencing growing sales. How are these happening? This paper will illustrate the strengths and weakness of Bali Wen-Dan pomelo has, and the opportunities and threats it faces by SWOT analysis for industry reference. In order to discover the cultivation and sales model of Bali Wen-Dan pomelo, this study interviewed 9 Wen-Dan pomelo farmers with innovative cultivation and sales model according to the interview guidance designed by Osterwalder & Pigneur (2010) and Ya-Hsin Peng & Chien-Hsien Yen (2015). The findings may be summarized in three types of business model, including production - direct marketing type, recreational experience - direct marketing type, and catering -direct marketing type. These business models used in conjunction with the four initiatives from Blue Ocean Strategy to modify current Bali Wen-Dan pomelo business model would be much more competitive.

There are three purposes for this study: 1) I want to investigate how the Barn Swallow distribute in Hsin-chu city; 2). Try to analyze the nest site characters; 3) Try to understand the habitat types and each type area around the nest with 1 square kilometer range. There are 3303 nests in Hsinchu city under my total survey, the nest spread by aggregate pattern in those area: 1).Guandong Bridge、Syuefu Road、Shihpin Road in East District; 2). Chenggong Road and Dongda Road , Section 4 of North District; 3) Huajiang Street、Dajhuang Road and Yuanpei Street in the Siangshan District. Most of those nest in this in Hsin-chu city are locate in those street direction of south-east and north-west (112.5∘-135∘ and 315∘-337.5∘), and those house direction of north-east and south-west(22.6∘-45∘ and 202.6∘-225∘). The nests located in different part on corridor roof of street building, more nests are found near to the road side and the inner the building the fewer nests. There are 13.93% on the beams’ inner side (code position 2), 24.04% on the outer parts (code position 12), 16.77% on eaves (code position 14). To extend the habitat type sampling to the zone of swallow feeding range(1250m×1250m), the nest density is positive correlate to the area for water conservancy (r=0.237**), military use area (r=0.195**) and farm land (r=0.151*) , and is negative correlate to street coverage (r=-0.222**), building coverage (r=-0.189**). Two factors come out after factor analysis. The first factor can be explained as “artificial factor” composed by buildings (-0.937), road (-0.899) and farmlands (0.975), which all possess high factor loading. The second factor can be explained as “feeding area” factor composed by military bases (0.904), irrigation areas (0.807), which both possess high factor loading and respond for the food resources. The correlation of two factors is insignificant; each one is almost independent on each other. Both factors represent that the less the man made area around neat, the more food resource

The research showed that traditional Guanyinshan idol-carving industry in Bali Township was based out of the excellent Two-Pyroxene Andesite mine. This mine was the main source of stone for the entire Guanyinshan industry for many decades. Although there were idol-carving artistic masters in Bali Township, the stone miners were the majority of workers in the region. With the great skill, the craftsmen and stone-carvers promoted the stone idols, Guanyinshan idols were then to be found in many temples around Taiwan when the Guanyinshan idol-carving industry in the full bloom. Although the prohibition of stone mining influenced the Guanyinshan idol-carving industry, the Guanyinshan stone-carving industry transformed because of the new stone material market.

Abstract:
Abstract: “Exchange Dublin – An Invitation to the City” draws a portrait of a non-profit collective arts centre in Temple Bar, Dublin. Exchange Dublin has a focus on cultural and artistic activities, by providing an open space for art exhibitions and various cultural events, open to all for free. This is a way of trying to democratise the access to art and culture as a quintessential part of people’s lives and educations, for both the public and the artists, which get a unique opportunity of showcasing their work without judgement or discrimination. Exchange Dublin also plays a key role in supporting and promoting the quality of life of the disadvantaged communities in the city. Throughout this paper the organisation will be analysed in detail, as well as my contribution to it during the five-month long internship underwent there. On this topic, the findings of the audience research, carried out through a survey applied to the public of Exchange Dublin, will be presented and conclusions will be drawn about Exchange Dublin’s public profile, as well as their habits, preferences, attitudes and perceptions regarding the space. There will also be an analysis of the crisis the organisation is going through with the threat of closure they have received, with focus on the causes and, most importantly, the solutions to tackle it. On this topic there will be a description in detail of the measures taken and some suggestions will be made to make some changes to improve the space and the organisation’s image, which could salvage the space. Finally, it will also be emphasised the great opportunity Exchange Dublin’s location in the tourist district of the city constitutes and some suggestions will be made on how to take advantage of the organisation’s touristic potential and attract more tourists to the space, mostly through communication.

Taiwan is an island with rich natural resources. However, multiple inappropriate developments occurred during the economic development and caused damage to the precious ecological environment. Fortunately, ecological concepts have been developing in recent years. Ecological planning and design concepts have gradually become consensus for regional development. On the other hand, leadership development in urban areas still causes gap between regional development and ecological vision due to the development of design procedures. “Eco-city” viewpoint is being used in this study to consider the issues faced by local environmental development according to environmental characteristics with Bali ferry district used as empirical area. The main research methods used to examine the regional status of ecological environment are investigation of base, SWOT analysis, GIS mapping and structural analysis of natural environment. Through relevant theories, researches of urban design and ecological city, and review of domestic and foreign waterfront spatial planning cases and relevant literatures, we could study the pros and cons of current regional urban design and summarize urban design strategy and structure of waterfront ecological city. Analyze with accordance to the nature of eco-space structure with empirical research to divide the environmental development issue of ferry district into “Urban Spatial Development Area” and “Ecological Sensitive Areas” to study. Combine the investigation analysis result of regional ecological environment to propose regional urban design strategies recommendation based on eco-city viewpoint as conclusion.

The measurement of agri-product marketing supply chain performance can indicate the efficiency of supply and facilitate decision-making, so the purpose of this study is to establish the conceptual framework of agri–product supply chain performance measurement, and to assess the applicability of the model. Through domestic and foreign literature review, the research takes the ideas of Aramyan (2007) and others and considers indicators of the agri-production supply chain performances include four dimensions: efficiency, flexibility, responsiveness and quality of agri-products. During the process of agri-products supply, the Farmers' Association helps effectively farmers to organize marketing group to improve pomelo supply chain performance, so the organizational effectiveness dimension is further considered in this study. To ascertain the suitability of the design, this study use Likert’s five-point scale to assess the validity of those measurements, and select a case study conducted five dimensions in order to detect agricultural supply chain key performance indicators. The pomelo at Pali district, New Taipei City, in Taiwan is of great significance for local production, so the study selects the largest marketing group members, and using the index score 3.5-5 in five dimensions as the key indicators. But also for organizational effectiveness and efficiency dimensions, flexibility, responsiveness and quality of agricultural products and other four dimensions to test correlation, this study established four hypotheses, with chi-square test analysis. The test result only partially support the research hypothesis, but still shows a profound significance.
