The presence of ion-pairs in electrolyte solutions affects the activity of dissolved species as well as the solubility of minerals. The extent of ion-pairing in a system is predicted by an association constant, K[subscript A], which for sparingly soluble salts are frequently determined experimentally in binary or ternary systems. This introduces complex activity coefficient calculations that often require unavailable parameters. A comparative study was carried out to observe effects of standard grade and fine grade barite on the filtration rates of four suspension feeding bivalves, Modiolus modiolus, Dosinia exoleta, Venerupis senegalensis and Chlamys varia. Standard grade barite, the most commonly used weighting agent in water-based drilling mud, was responsible for altering the filtration rates of the four bivalve species and damaging the gill structure. Das Mineralganggebiet Brunndöbra-Schneckenstein mit der Schwerspatlagerstätte Brunndöbra liegt am Westrand des oberkarbonischen Eibenstocker Granitmassivs in kontaktmetamorph veränderten kambro-ordovizischen Phylliten. Dieser Gesteinskomplex wird von Bruchstörungen mit Auf- und Abschiebungscharakter in ein Schollenmosaik zerlegt, in dem linsenförmige Leistenschollen vorherrschen. Die NW-SO-streichende Lagerstättenstruktur (Hauptgangzone) Brunndöbra ist durch Bergbau und Bohrungen auf ca. 5 km Länge näher untersucht.
