Full textBackground: Good sleep quality is one of the requirements for patients to recover. Poor sleep quality or too little sleep will prevent the healing process and will slow down the patient’s recovery. It is known that patients get worse sleep in a hospital environment than they do in their home, and even though, poor sleep among patients is not documented to a frequent extent. Nurses have the responsibility for nursing the patient and the nurse should work with the aim to provide patients in the ward with uninterrupted sleep with good sleep quality. Different factors affect patients sleep and there has been studies showing that what patients perceive affect their sleep does not always correspond with that nurses believe affect patients sleep. Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe the factors that inpatients perceived affected their sleep. Method: A literature review based on ten scientific articles. Results: Patients are affected by several different factors, among some are environmental factors such as noise from medical equipment, alarms from the ward, noise from other patients and background noise. Uncomfortable beds were also stated as a factor. Nursing actions also affected patients sleep. Such as controls of vital signs, administration of pharmaceuticals, drawing blood samples and different kind of tests. Patients symptoms and illness-related disorders affected patients sleep. Pain, intubation and the need to go to the toilet were stated to affect sleep. Psychological factors also affect sleep. Concern and anxiety because the patients could not perform their daily routine and sleeping on an unfamiliar bed contributed to poor sleep quality. Conclusion: There are several factors which the nurse can work to eliminate or moderate, mainly through nursing actions to reduce noise and light. Even when performing necessary nursing actions, the nurse can work to affect sleep as little as possible by coordinating nursing actions for different patients in the same ward and limit the conversation tone. The nurse should also work to suppress pain and anxiety of the patients.

Full textIn Sweden, patients with critical illness are given care in Pediatric care units. Observation of vital signs can anticipate patient deterioration. A rapid response team (RRT) can support care units in their work with patients with critical illness. A pediatric RRT was established at the Hospital of Halland, Halmstad in November 2014. The aim of this study was to investigate experiences of the pediatric RRT from nurses working at the Pediatric Department at the Hospital of Halland, Halmstad. The study has a qualitative design and the material has been processed with qualitative content analysis. To answer the aim of the study, nurses who participated in pediatric RRT assessments at the Hospital of Halland were interviewed in groups. The interviews resulted in three categories: participation, organization and competence. The result showed that the nurses have a positive experience of pediatric RRT as the model promotes shared responsibility, patient safety and skill development. To strengthen staff skills, nurses requested further training in pediatric RRT. The result can give the reader an insight into how the RRT may affect the work at a Pediatric care unit. The reader may benifit from the result if intended to design a pediatric RRT in a hospital providing pediatric care. Further study could shed light on critical care nurses' experiences of pediatric RRT. If pediatric RRT’s are introduced on a number of Swedish hospitals, departments can benefit from sharing experiences and knowledge that develops pediatric RRT.

Full textBackground: During 2018 over 80 000 children were hospitalized in Sweden. Parents' perception of nursing care during the hospitalization of their child highly influences the child's perception of care. The inpatient situation is frightening and unknown; parents feeling safe leads to children feeling safe. Pediatric care should have a family centered perspective that makes the family an active participator. Aim: To identify the perception of parents regarding nursing care during hospitalization of their child. Method: A literature review of scientific articles with both qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodology. Findings: There was, generally, a positive perception and high satisfaction among the parents based on the findings in the included articles regarding nursing care and participation during their child's hospitalization. During the analysis five categories regarding the nursing experience were identified: “Parents’ necessity of good communication”, “Parents need to be informed”, “The importance of parental involvement”, “Parents’ expectations on the nurse” and ”Parental need of a kind approach”. Conclusion: The results indicate that parents' perception of nursing care needs is universal. Parents generally have a positive perception of nursing care. Communication, information, participation, support, relations and family centeredness are, according to the parents, pivoting factors for creating a perception of good pediatric care. All aspects are tightly woven together, influencing each other. Parents are enabled a positive perception of nursing care if all aspects are intricately interlinked.

Full textBackground: When a child gets cancer, the whole family's life is turned upsidedown. Parents are given new roles to find while caring for their sick child. Parentsoften go through a crisis and it is important for the legitimate nurse to have theknowledge to support the parents. By gathering parents' experiences, the nurse canmore easily respond to the parents and be there as support.Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate parents' experiences when theircancer-sick child are being cared for in a hospital.Method: A literature study of ten qualitative scientific articles. The articles wereretrieved from three different databases with a focus on nursing. The articles wereanalyzed with qualitative content analysisResult: In the result, three categories emerged, information, feelings andrelationships. Parents feel that they are in a great shock at diagnosis and that it isimportant to get clear and written information. During the course of the treatment, parents experience different emotions that must be processed while being isolatedin the hospital. Parents feel that their relationship with relatives, friends, partnersand health care professionals is changing. Some feel that they are getting closer, while others feel that they are having a worse relationship. Conclusion: The affected family goes through a very tough period and has manyemotions to process. The parents' experience of the situation is greatly influencedby the response from the healthcare staff. It is important that the healthcare staff isthere to support and listen to the parents. The parents appreciated when they got tobe involved in their child's treatment and feel that they are doing something good. Keywords: cancer, child, experience, feelings, parents

Full textChildren have different fears and coping strategies depending on the age of the child and stage of development. They can experience the hospital as something menacing and dreadful. Former research on children’s fears has often been answered by others than themselves, which have been shown to give a false picture of their hospital experience. The purpose of this study was to describe what kind of fears children have for hospital and how they manage to overcome them. A literature review was made of material with a qualitative approach, ten articles were reviewed and a content analysis was made. Six categories emerged: Loneliness, Separation, Examinations and treatments, Operation, Attachment, Activities and play in hospital. The result indicated that children aged 3-18 years had a fear of being alone and separated from their parents. A recurring coping to alleviate children’s fear was to have parents present.

Full textWhen a child is hospitalized, a parent is often present during the whole stay. All parents are not pleased with the appearance and the information given by the medical staff. When parents are not feeling secure with the situation at the hospital, they become less supportive to their sick child. The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of parents’ needs and expectations, when their child was hospitalized. The method was a literature study including ten scientific articles. The result showed that when a child was hospitalized, the parents wished to receive continuous information about their child’s state of health, treatment and prognosis. The information given by the medical staff needs to be straightforward, honest and easy to understand. The first meeting between the medical staff, the parents and their child were most important in order to make the parents feel secure and get a feeling of trust. It was of great value to the parents, that the child was recognised and appreciated as a unique person and not just as a patient. Parents wished that the medical staff should be nice to them and their child, and that they would be respected as parents and that the whole family would be seen as a unit. Most parents considered it important to be involved in the care and to be a connection between their child and the medical staff. They wished that the medical staff more frequently had asked them if they needed assistance with their sick child. Since the medical staff often was stressed out and busy, the parents hesitated to ask for assistance. If the medical staffs, in their best possible way try to meet the parents' expectations and needs when their child is hospitalized, it can lead to the parents being ensured in the care situation and thus they become a better support for their sick child.
Nestevik, Angelica, and Sofia Säfsten. Thesis, Stockholm University, The Stockholm Institute of Education, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-7744.

The purpose of this literature review was to describe children's experiences of nursing in hospital, this to get a better view of a sick child's perspective. The method that has been used is literature review according to Polit and Hungler (1999) and analysis according to Friberg (2006). The keywords used in the search for literature was child, hospital, chronic disease, experience, cancer, asthma and adolescent. The review is based on nine qualitative articles. Three main themes were found in the result: participation in care, treatment and safety. Themes that were found was: to wish to participate in their care, relevance of the information, contact with nursing staff, support for the examination and treatment, to have family and friends close, to live as they are used to and be able to play and be active. Children wants to get involved in their care and to be shown respect for their own opinion. The information is important and must be given in view of the individual. Children want to have their family close and the life to be as it normally is. The results show flaws in the treatment of sick children. Despite laws and guidelines describing children's rights in hospital care, children are feeling ignored. The staffs are not talking directly to them and they have to adjust to the procedures of the ward.

Full textBackground The main purpose in palliative care is relieve of symptoms from conditions that’s not curable. For children, these conditions can be cancer or some neurologic diseases. Getting palliative care as a child is a right according to WHO. The children wanted their parents. The parents felt that they lost their parental role when their children were cared for palliatively. The parents had different views on how a nurse in palliative child care should be, and how the care should be conducted. The nurse's task is to relieve symptoms and support both children and parents in a family-centered care. Aim The aim of this study was to describe nurses' experiences with palliative care of children in hospitals. Method A descriptive literature study that identified 11 articles through the databases Medline via PubMed and Cinahl. These articles have been analyzed and thematized for this literature study. Results Nurses felt that nursing was conducted unequally, as a result of inadequate guidelines. There were also ethical dilemmas in palliative child care, which could be about communication problems, and that nurses felt that some children were over-cared for. Nurses experienced emotional difficulties, which were best processed through debriefing. Main categories identified were; The Nurses experience of Prerequisites in Palliative Child Care, Ethical Dilemmas, Over-Care, Emotional Load, At the End of Life and Debriefing. Conclusion Nurses experienced uncertainty in working with children in palliative care, due to lack of guidelines, education and knowledge. Ethical dilemmas arose in the care, and the nurses could experience emotional difficulties that can affect nursing. Therefore, the nurses need time for reflection to be able to perform Nursing of the children.

Full textBackground: Parents’ view of nursing care differs compared to the nurses’ view of nursing care. Parents’ view of nursing care is highly affected by emotions meanwhile the nurses’ view is based on routines, organizational structure, ideological commitment and the conditions of the daily activities. The different view could easily cause misunderstandings and barriers between them that could worsen the parents experience of the nursing care. The nurse have a responsibility to adapt the nursing care to the individual person’s perception of well being. The knowledge of parents’ experience of nursing care is essential for the quality of the nursing care for families. Aim: This study aimed to illustrate parents’ experience of nursing care when their child is hospitalized. Methods: The study is conducted as a literature review and contains 14 scientific articles whom been collected from CINAHL and PubMed as chosen databases. The articles have been analyzed with review templates and also approved by etichs committees. Findings: Four different main categories of the parents’ experiences of the nursing care where found. 1. Communication 2. Participation in their childs’ care. 3. The nurses’ treatment. 4. The hospital enviroment. Communication had a significant importance for the nursing care. The Communication could also be found as a requisite for a good experience in all the main categories. Conclusion: Parents’ experiences of nursing care are important for the fundamentals of nursing care. Improvement of communication between the nurse and the parents could enhance the parents’ experiences of nursing care when their child was hospitalized. Furthermore, future research on parents experiences of nursing care as a parent is needed to contribute to the gap of knowledge and create a deeper understanding of the subject.

Full textIntroduction: Hospitalized children do not get enough sleep. Both sleep quality and amount of sleep was affected. More awakenings occurred during the night at the hospital compared to at home. Aim: To investigate children's sleeping experience at hospitals and what factors they stated promoted and inhibited their sleep. Method: The study was performed using a mixed method. Data was collected prospectively and consecutively. Fourty-four children completed a questionnaire with closed and openended questions. Results: On the Faces Pain Scale (FPS-R), 52% answered that their sleep in the hospital was "very good" or "good". 84% answered that they slept “very good” or “good” at home (p = 0.016). There was no correlation between how the children rated their sleep at home and at the hospital (p = 0.138). There was a correlation between how the children estimated their sleep during the care period and the children's age (rs = 0.307, p = 0.042). The younger the children the better they appreciated their sleep. The children experienced that the nursing staff's presence and the physical environment both had a promoting and an inhibiting effect on their sleep. Conclusion: Most of the children were satisfied with their sleep. The sleep experience during the hospital stay was inferior to their sleep at home. The children were primarily disturbed by the nursing staff during the night. Although the staff also contributed to a sense of security for the children.

Approximately 600 young people in the ages 0-14 years get diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 1 in Sweden each year. The numbers of young people that get diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 1 increase continuously. In connection with the diabetes debut, the entire family is affected. Parents, relatives and children must learn to live with the disease and above all, try to adapt the everyday existence on the basis of the new conditions that comes with the disease. To make this adaptation possible, the healthcare contributes with important knowledge and care, especially during the diseases debut. The aim of this study was to describe the nurse's way of experiences about care of children on hospitals in connection with the child's diabetes debut. A qualitative method and a phenomenographic approach were used in order to describe variations and ways of experience at the nurses. Data collection occurred during interviews. The result describes the nurse's way of experience in three categories: information, questions and the way out of the hospital. The result shows that the nurses notice problems and scarcity in the information they handle. They saw that the adaption to the everyday is important and that the nurses have an important role in this guidance. The knowledge from this study shows that it’s important to see the child together with the family. It also shows the value of good follow-up.

Full textAim: To study if an education about children and pain improved the knowledge of registered nurses including compliance to the quality objectives of the Uppsala University Children’s Hospital concerning pain. Methods: The 23 nurses were employed within a children’s emergency unit and in two in-wards within the Uppsala University Children’s Hospital. The nurses answered to a questionnaire about the quality objectives concerning children and pain before and after a training-intervention. The nurses’ documentation of pain measurement in hospital records were analyzed before and after the intervention. Differences before and after training were analyzed using Exact Sign Test. Findings: Assessments of pediatric pain were found in 20% of the reviewed hospital records both before and after the training-intervention. However, nurses’ knowledge of the quality objectives was improved. Conclusion: Pediatric pain assessments need to be addressed. The study highlights the need of a discussion amongst pain representatives from the staff and managers on common strategies to implement decided quality objectives concerning children and pain. In a national perspective pain should be included as the fifth vital parameter and thus treated as breathing, blood pressure, heart rate and saturation.

Full textBackground: Neonatal care is needed if the child is born prematurely or is sick at the time of birth. The child can be in need of care for a couple of hours up till several months. After discharge from the hospital, the Child Health Care (CHC)-nurses evaluate the child’s development regularly and provide support to the parents. Aim: The aim was to describe the CHC-nurse’s experiences of caring for parents whose child has been admitted to neonatal care. Method: Eleven interviews were conducted with CHC-nurses in the southeast of Sweden. A qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman was performed and had an inductive approach. Results: The result were presented in two categories: Giving time to grow into the parenting role and The work of strengthening the parenting role. The experience of the CHC-nurse was that the transition from neonatal care to home life could be strenuous for the parents and the child health nurses strengthened the parents by making early contact, providing extra support and normalizing everyday life. Conclusion: The experience of the CHC-nurse was that the transition between neonatal care to the home life can be difficult for the parents, and it is important that the CHC-nurse supports the parents to become safe in their everyday life.

Full textTo be a parent of a child who is being cared for in hospital is complicated and difficult and affects each parent differently. Isolation can cause stress to the parents and lead to a further need for control, information and communication. The purpose of this study was to describe how parents experienced staying in a hospital isolation room with their children when the children were being cared for in hospital. The study has a descriptive qualitative design. The study showed that the parents felt awkward and worried about asking for help when they needed it. The parents placed an importance on being seen by the staff and there was a lack of information and communication. There was no information available about how to receive help, the planning process and also how to keep oneself occupied. The isolation rooms were described as sterile, cold and lacking a homely feel. Having something to do made the isolation easier to cope with however the parents still found it difficult to keep the children entertained. The parents felt trapped when they were not able to leave the room which resulted in a constant focus on the health of the child and this in turn led to an increased anxiety level. The level of help given to the parents varied and support was considered important. Further research into the importance of help available for parents, as well as how staff members could change the awkwardness parents feel, would be useful for parents, children and staff members, and may encourage new routines.

Full textBackground When a child is cared for in the hospital, the whole family gets affected. The parents are constantly present at the hospital with many experienced feelings such as stress and anxiety. The situation can be challenging for the parents, since they both need to support the child and deal with their own emotions. The parents may then experience a need for support from the nurses. By highlighting how the parents experience the support, the nurses can adapt their supportive efforts and encourage the parents' well-being during the hospitalization. Aim This study aims to highlight parents ´experience of the nurse´s supportive efforts when a child is hospitalized. Method The design of the study was a literature review that included scientific articles. Data was collected through systematic database searches in PubMed and CINAHL as well as through manual searches. Both qualitative and quantitative articles were included. The articles were quality reviewed and the 15 articles that were finally selected, were then analyzed according to anintegrated analysis method. Results The results consisted of six categories that showed how parents experience nurse’s supportive efforts when their child is hospitalized. The categories of the study showed that parents of hospitalized children experienced emotional support, information, communication, participation, the experience of continuity, and the nurse's attitude as important supportive efforts. The results showed three major findings which were information and emotional support from nurses as wellas participation in the child’s care. Conclusions The conclusion was that parents experienced a need for supportive efforts from nurses when their children were hospitalized. The need for support differed between parents, both in terms of how much support they needed, the supportive effort they valued most, and to what extent they felt that the nurses met their needs. The results can form a foundation for further research in the subject, where it is required for nurses to be able to adapt the supportive efforts in the best wayand encourage parents’ well-being.

Full textThe aim of this study was to describe how the nurse may support the parents and the siblings of a hospitalized child. The quality of the articles was reported by the methodological aspects of selection and non-response. A descriptive literature study was conducted. Twelve scientific articles were found in the databases PubMed and Cinahl. The result showed that the nurse, by deliver a proper, individually adapted support might promote the health of the entire family. Proper communication and a distinct information from the nurse contributed to an increased perceived security. When the nurse demonstrated patience, was available, spent time for dialogue, listened and was honest, the parents felt trust which formed the foundation for the development of a good relationship. The nurse could also support the parents by letting them participate in the nursing care of their sick child and encourage them both practically and emotionally. The siblings also felt more confident when they were involved in the care and got distinct information about the prognosis of their sibling. The quality of selection and non-response in the examined studies had variation but were over all considered high. The conclusion is that the nurses, through clear information and communication, can support and help parents and siblings to cope with the situation and help them to become a better support for the sick child.

Full textAhlman, L & Grabka, J. Pictorial Support. Nurses experiences of using pictorial support in the care of children staying in the hospital. Degree project in nursing 15 credits. Malmö University: Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Care Science, 2018.Background: Children staying in the hospital face a risk of not having their communicative needs catered for, despite their rights to individualised information. Children who do not receive or understand the information about what is going to happen face a risk of feeling insecure and do not want to participate in procedures, examinations and treatments. By providing children with images as a tool for communication, they can be involved in their care. A child who is participating and has knowledge about their illness and treatment often feels more secure and is more compliant.Aim: Investigating nurses’ experiences of using pictorial support in the care of children staying in the hospital.Design: A qualitative study incorporating semi-structured interviews was implemented. A total of ten nurses were interviewed: Eight nurses from three pediatric wards and two from a patient facility in the south of Skåne.Results: The nurses were positive towards using pictorial support in the care and experienced that it could be used more frequently. Pictorial support can aid in educating patients about their illness and the treatment and can also be used as a schedule to create routines during the stay at the hospital. The nurses experienced that children became more interested and participated in their care when pictorial support was used. The children that used pictorial support also felt more secure because they knew what was going to happen. Talking about the images facilitated the initiation of a dialogue between the nurse and the child. The images also aided the nurses in adapting their way of speaking and in remembering giving most important information to the child. Conclusion: Pictorial support is used in many pediatric wards but could be used more frequently. There is a need for education about how to use pictorial support as well as structures for an uniform procedure.
