Abstract:
IntroductionAkathisia is probably the most common and one of the most distressing of the movement disorders associated with antipsychotic drugs. Little is known about its prevalence and its risk factors in real-world psychotic and bipolar patients to date.ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of akathisia and to determine the risk factors and the treatments associated with it in a sample of Tunisian patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder.MethodsSeventy-four patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder were included and assessed with a validated scale: the Barnes Akathisia scale (BAS). Ongoing psychotropic treatments were recorded.ResultsThe global prevalence of akathisia (as defined by a score ≥ 2 on the global akathisia subscale of the BAS) was 20.5%. Akathisia was significantly more common in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder than in patients with Bipolar disorder (27.5% vs 9.4%; P = 0.049). However, the prevalence of akathisia did not differ according to sex, age, the illness duration, the presence of a comorbid anxiety disorder, the number of antipsychotics used, the type of the used antipsychotic (first vs second-generation), the antipsychotic chlorpromazine-equivalent total dosage, the use of benzodiazepines or anticholinergics, or the reported drug compliance.ConclusionsAkathisia seems to be more common in some psychiatric disorders than in others such as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Longitudinal studies would be required to draw any firm conclusions concerning the factors involved in the emergence of akathisia.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to assess the effects of discovery and creation behaviour in opportunity identification on firm performance in a developing country context. By doing so, the study adds new knowledge and insights in researching the entrepreneurial behaviour types at the start-up phase and their eventual effects on firm performance.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted amongst Ethiopian tour operators (n = 118), which are formally established small tourism firms. A survey questionnaire, which is the main data gathering tool in this study, was prepared based on a distinction between discovery and creation behaviour with regard to the seven entrepreneurial actions described by Alvarez and Barney (2007). Hence, 14 multiple-item measurement scales were derived to define the entrepreneurial behaviour types. Firm performance was measured using four indicators. A regression analysis was conducted to predict the effect of entrepreneurial behaviour at the start-up phase on firm performance.FindingsThe findings of this study provide consistent support for the hypothesis that tour-operating firms in Ethiopia founded through creation behaviour instead of discovery behaviour are performing better in terms of sales, employment, profit and asset size change.Research limitations/implicationsThe theoretical contribution of this study is two-fold. First, it provides a scale for measuring the extent to which discovery and/or creation opportunity identification played a role in the start-up phase of the business. Second, the study assesses the effects of discovery behaviour and creation behaviour in opportunity identification on firm performance in a developing country context.Originality/valueThe entrepreneurs' behaviour through which they identify and pursue new opportunities may have a considerable effect on the subsequent performance of their newly established firms. It is, therefore, important to understand effects, which result from differences in entrepreneurs' behaviour at the start-up phase, in terms of outcomes such as firm performance among small businesses. Nonetheless, there is little empirical research conducted in this regard, particularly in the context of developing countries. This study contributes to the literature of entrepreneurship by applying entrepreneurial behaviour types, i.e. discovery and creation, as determinants of small firms' performance in a developing country context. Furthermore, it is one of the few studies concentrating on formal instead of informal operations in an African context.

Abstract:
According to the resource based view (RBV) of the firm (Wernerfeldt, 1984; Barney, 2004) and distributed knowledge system view of the firm, knowledge is a critical organizational resource that contributes to superior performance if relevant KM capabilities are built and applied to the knowledge resources. The perspective that sound operations strategy applied to knowledge is necessary for a firm to take full advantage of knowledge management programmes is explored in this paper. The objective of this paper is to document empirical evidence from existing literature on the effect of KM process capability on performance of firms and to identify opportunities for further research which can generate more knowledge to help in the understanding of this relationship leading to the improvement of the contribution of knowledge to performance. An empirical literature survey method was used to collect information regarding KM process capability and its effect on performance. The results suggest that knowledge management process operations positively impact performance. Arising from these findings, it is proposed that studies be launched to determine the relative disposition and contribution of each of the KM process capabilities operations to performance. Such studies will guide organizations in building KM process capabilities and carrying out operations which can be leveraged for sustainable superior performance using knowledge resources.

Abstract:
Competitiveness of a firm is its capacity to achieve its targets. These targets are likely to be expressed in a variety of terms depending on the context (Barney 2002). Within a macroeconomic perspective, a competitive firm develops and sustains a level of performance that contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment opportunities, and the wealth of the people. From an entrepreneurial perspective, a competitive firm needs to survive in the market and to achieve market share and profitability. This paper deliberates regarding the theory of competitive advantage and discusses the role of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for augmenting SMEs' competitiveness.

Abstract:
Just as Michelangelo Buonarroti (1476-1564) worked as a sculptor, painter, architect and poet, Matthew Barney (1967) switches smoothly between various contemporary art forms. The oeuvre of this US artist includes performance, photography, drawing, design and film. Not coincidentally an art critic, writing in 1989, dubbed him 'The Michelangelo of genital art' and this was not just because of the many athletic nudes that people his oeuvre. The parallels between Barney (1967) and Michelangelo (1476-1564) are greater than one might think. In the article Senne Schrayen makes a comparison between Barney's current series of performances (started in 1987) called Drawing Restraint and Michelangelo's drawings of 1532 from a transhistorical perspective and giving close attention to the process of making the drawing.

Abstract:
This study concerns the infrared measurement of steady-state and transient temperatures of microscopic areas within the contact region formed by a magnetic tape passing over a simulated recording head. This research demonstrates that the tape surface temperature can be measured within specific limits of response time and sensitivity. Due to its high tranmissivity in the relevant infrared band, sapphire was chosen as the material to be used in the fabrication of a simulated recording head. A Barnes RM2A infrared microscope was the principle radiometer used, while a best effort was made in scanning with an AGA Thermovision 750. The friction force versus load characteristics of the head-magnetic tape interface were also observed. The high speed measurements were divided into two regimes; non-contact hydrodynamic film region, and tape-head contact regime. The temperature measurements displayed a strong correlation with the measured friction force versus load curve. Almost no temperature rise was found in the noncontact hydrodynamic film region while a temperature rise of a few degrees Celsius was found when there was tape-head contact. The results with the AGA Thermovision 750 were consistent with the measurements obtained with the Barnes RM2A.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is explore an organizational design that allows firms to invest in transferable strategic human capital. Strategic human capital requires considerable investment in training costs, effective compensation, opportunities for professional development and expectancy of long employment relationship within a firm. A firm can undertake investment in strategic knowledge and workers can engage in learning only in these circumstances. However, there are a number of risks that are associated with investment in strategic human capital within a firm. In this paper, the author argues that providing strategic human capital to other firms within alliances could be a strategy for leveraging resource. Strategic knowledge facilitates transactions between firms possessing co-specialized human capital and tangible resources. Organizational design of an alliance based on co-specialization allows to balance costs and returns for the human capital supplier, as well as for beneficiary and workers. Within an alliance, the human capital supplier provides workers to a beneficiary firm and coordinates their activities. Supplier specialized in human capital investment ensures improved performance, productivity and efficiency of workers. Possibility to form a greater pool of labor force and to centralize training allows optimizing cost and sharing risks associated with investment activity among alliance participants. Human resource practices in an alliance system foster long-term employment relationship. Entering an alliance increases number of job positions, professional development opportunities through horizontal mobility, promotion and learning opportunities for workers. Finally, alliances allow leveraging investment in human capital beyond a single organization. Design/methodology/approach – This paper conceptualizes the use of alliance based on co-specialization as a strategy to optimize investment in strategic human capital resource. It draws upon the resource-based view (Barney, 1991; Wernerfelt, 1995) and transaction cost theory (Coase, 1937; Williamson, 1981) to examine an alliance as a strategy for leveraging the human capital resources for accessing new markets, building reputation and sharing the risks across more than one organization. Findings – First, the paper reviews the theoretical literature on human capital as a strategic resource (Becker, 1962; Coff, 1997), its sourcing on internal and external labor markets and respective employment systems (Delery and Doty, 1996; Doeringer and Piore, 1971). Second, it focuses on the features of human capital resource (Barney, 1986; Chi, 1994; Doz and Hamel, 1998). Third, it conceptualizes the use of alliances based on co-specialization as organizational structures for investment in human capital across organizations and examines respective employment system and HR practices (Delery and Doty, 1996; Doeringer and Piore, 1971). As result, the author argues that an alliance can be an alternative mean to optimize returns on investment in human capital with strategic transferable knowledge. By consequence, the author describes an alliance employment system and illustrates the arguments with a case of human capital trading in a co-specialization alliance under a long-term management contract in the luxury hotel industry. Originality/value – This paper discusses collaborative ventures as a sourcing strategy of the human capital. An alliance strategy is relevant for sourcing the strategic human capital resources. Human capital resource can be accessed by firms through transfer of skills and organizational routines within collaborative agreements, such as alliances based on co-specialization. In this case, alliance is an organizational architecture between organizations that improves the efficiency and productivity, reduces marginal cost on training due to larger scale of operations and reduces risk by splitting investment in human capital and by offering more career and development opportunities for strategic knowledge workers.

Abstract:

Candy, Ryan David. "Resources, Strategy and Performancein the Smaller Firm." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Management, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3522.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between firm resources, positioning strategies and performance in the smaller firm. Porter’s generic strategies have been useful in describing how firms compete in the marketplace, and the resource based view has shown that resources can lead to a sustained competitive advantage. The strategic management field has begun to combine the two theories and examine the link between them. Small firms must make the best use of their relatively scarce resources. It is proposed that the relationship between resources and performance is contingent upon the positioning strategy the firm competes on, although there has only been limited supporting research to date. This research builds on work by Edelman et al. (2005) by examining the relationship between human, organisational and physical resources, and the strategies of quality/ customer service, innovation, and cost leadership in 447 retail, engineering, and professional service firms in New Zealand. Using Structural Equations Modelling this research finds that positioning strategies are the mechanism by which firms can leverage their resources into higher performance. This relationship can be modelled as mediated or moderated, with statistical analysis sensitive to model complexity. The firm’s environment influences this relationship with different resources required to support each position depending on the industry. Specifically human, organisational, and physical resources appear to be viable sources of competitive advantage when they are leveraged by a strategy of quality/ customer service, innovation or cost leadership when the industry environment is conducive to the resource – strategy combination.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Sammanlagt ingår 81 barn i enkätundersökningen.

Abstract:
The main aim of this dissertation is to examine the different childhood discourses permeating Swedish children’s cinema. This is done through close readings of three films that, each in their own way, play an important role in the history of this tradition: THE CHILDREN OF FROSTED MOUNTAIN (Rolf Husberg, 1945), THE CHILDREN OF BULLERBY VILLAGE (Olle Hellbom, 1960) and ELVIS! ELVIS! (Kay Pollak, 1977). Other subjects analysed are media debates about children’s film from the periods in which the films were produced, as well as official reports on the same subject. Taken as a whole, these elements form a significant body of material, describing the notions of children and childhood, as well as ideas around children’s film as medium, that predominated in Swedish society at three given moments in the 20th century. The study shows, that the most striking characteristic is that ever since 1945, when the first film specifically made for children was produced in Sweden, such films have been created with the intention of ‘benefiting’ the young audience. This ‘cinema of best intentions’, in turn, contains a number of attributes that are not always as unequivocally positive as they might initially seem. One of the main starting points for this exploration comes from modern childhood studies, according to which every given time and culture has its own complex of ideas, understandings and representations of children and childhood. Another central theoretical source is Michel Foucault. His ideas of power and knowledge, discipline and oppression, as well as his methodology, permeate this study. From this point of view, there is an aspect of ‘best intentions’ children’s cinema that can be seen as imposing ‘the oppression of benevolence.’ The closing discussion shows how the Swedish children’s film, today as always, is inhibited by factors such as faithfulness to the written original, fear of upsetting the young audience and commercial demands.

Abstract:
This study aims to show pre-school children's conceptions on combustion and their thoughts on the conditions the process include. The data collection method this study used is through interviews. All of the children interviewed attend pre-school. All children who participated in the study are six years old. The interviews touched on different issues of fire, such as, how to start a fire, how to maintain a fire and how to extinguish a fire. Previous research about children’s conceptions and children and fire is the basis of the survey. The survey has shown that the children's explanations cannot be compared with the scientifically accepted theories even if the children seem to have some understanding about the conditions that are needed in the chemical process of fire. The children has mentioned fuel and heat as the main conditions for fire, while many has an uncertainty against oxygen. One of the children has shown a greater understanding of the purpose of oxygen. The children's knowledge about this subject mainly comes from experiences in an environment where caregivers is present. Suggestions for what preschool teachers can work with within the occupation has been show.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Twin Peaks and its engagement with and subversion of genre conventions. It discloses how the Twin Peaks television series is viewed as a work of postmodernism and a pastiche of several genres that provide references to film noir, which gives the series a cinematic feel. It also points out that the Twin Peaks series parodied television genre conventions, while David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is less interested in parody and pastiche and presents a more personal and subjective story. The chapter examines how Fire Walk With Me reveals more of the strange and unearthly realm that exists side-by-side with the town where larger forces of good and evil fight to gain control of Laura's soul. It describes the strong sense of the supernatural in Fire Walk With Me; an element that situates the film in the horror genre through the creation of mythical and mystical spaces.

Abstract:
Soviet and Russian cinemas offer unique opportunities to investigate the role of humor as an escape from oppression and an instrument for change. This chapter follows the nation’s filmmakers from the idealistic days of revolution (Lev Kuleshov, Sergei Eisenstein, Aleksandr Medvedkin), through Stalin’s repressive regime (Grigory Aleksandrov and Ivan Pyrev) and the chills and thaws of the Cold War (Eldar Ryazanov, Leonid Gaidai, Tengiz Abuladze). It introduces lesser-known talents who made films before (Yevgeny Bauer, Boris Barnet) and after (Yuri Mamin, Kira Muratova, Valery Todorovskiy) the Soviet era. In their own ways, each of these directors contributed to a comic cinema that builds on the ironic sensibility of Chekhov, the satiric caricatures of Gogol, and the archetypes of Russia’s native folklore.

Abstract:
This chapter questions what it means to ‘perform’ sickness and disability, and in particular, how common perceptions of the two may be revealed in their cinematic reiteration. Analysing Javier Bardem as emblematic of a whole branch of Spanish acting expertise, the chapter discusses the appearance of disability and illness in Mar adentro/The Sea Inside (Alejandro Amenábar, 2004) and Biutiful (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2010). Rather than assume that illness and disability are already understood phenomena, the chapter instead argues that their threat is kept at bay, that the performance of the two serves to reify the importance of the healthy body. Bardem, for this reason, is emblematic, as his physicality has long been praised and admired in Spanish cinema. For that reason, the chapter concludes, acting choices, cinematic styles, and the artificiality imposed by the camera keep illness and disability at arm’s length, constantly eluding audiences and actors alike.

Abstract:
Abstract The work in this paper is a part of the T-shirt cannon automation project. The objective of the project is to develop an autonomous robot carrying cannons to automatically shoot T-shirts during the sports events at the University of Cincinnati (UC). More specifically, the T-shirt cannon will be used and driven by the UC cheerleading team and be able to automatically shoot T-shirts at the audience in the Nippert Stadium and the 5/3 Arena for football and basketball games, respectively. The design and automation of the T-shirt cannon require a significant effort and a multi-disciplinary team to complete. This paper will focus on the process of designing, building, and testing the firing mechanism for the cannon, including the determination of cannon’s firing method, barrel design and assembly, base design and barrel mounting method, pneumatic analysis, and automation and control of the firing of T-shirts. The goal of the firing mechanism is that the cannon would fire off as many T-shirts as possible with the window of a single timeout at the game. The project starts with the preliminary research and the initial testing. During the preliminary research, the relevant safety standards/codes and previous T-shirt cannon designs were reviewed and studied. Especially the possible working with pressurized air, the material used in the design must be rated above the target firing pressure to ensure the cannon itself not explode and the air supply tank and fittings must be in good condition. During the initial testing, the site visits were conducted, the cheerleaders were interviewed, the dimensions of the stadium and the 5/3 arena were measured, and therefore the shooting distance and shooting angles were estimated. After the initial testing and preliminary research, a set of engineering characteristics were established, following by the concept design, in which the barrel assembly, the pneumatics, the firing mechanism, and the mounting method were discussed, analyzed, and determined. The barrels had two major designs, one is using a railing support system with an external tank of air to power and fire the cannon, and another one is using a chamber of air to power and fire the cannon with the barrels surrounding the air chamber itself. Two methods are analyzed and compared. The optimum one, therefore, was determined and developed. For the firing mechanism, two main designs are a spring-loaded firing mechanism that could increase the sealing capabilities of the barrels, and a tight tolerance fit that has less weight. Two designs were tested and analyzed, the optimum one was determined and built, followed by the firing mechanism testing. This paper will describe the process of design, building, and testing the firing mechanisms of this T-shirt cannon at UC. The paper will also discuss the testing results on shooting performance.

Full text
Abstract:
This application study of a swash-plate type axial piston pump was concerned about the hydrostatic lubrication characteristics of cylinder barrel and valve plate which are main rotating body and its opposite moving part respectively. A computer simulation was implemented to assess thrust bearing and mechanical sealing functions of the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate. A new algorithm was developed to facilitate simultaneous calculations of dynamic cylinder pressure, 3 degree-of-freedom barrel motions considering inertia effect, and fluid film pressure assuming full fluid film lubrication regime. Using the simulation tool, force and moment balancing of cylinder barrel which is a key issue of piston pump design was analyzed. Time dependent fluid film pressure and thickness distributions for several given balance ratios were calculated. This analysis helps to decide appropriate balance ratio in the valve and cylinder barrel. Oil leakage flow and friction torque in the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate were calculated as well and discussed in the viewpoint of energy loss. The results show that film thickness in plain surface is not high enough to bear the barrel and reduce power loss and that surface waviness which exists in actual sliding surfaces can have a positive effect on it. This simulation tool could also predict time dependent barrel motions due to simultaneous calculation algorithm. It has been known that cylinder barrel rotates with oscillation. Therefore average clearance, tilt angle, and azimuth angle were calculated for each time step and the results were discussed.

Abstract:
For the clarification of the lubrication and thermal problems between ring and liner of internal combustion engines, an unsteady thermohydrodynamic lubrication model considering the ring temperature and the ring movement in the piston ring groove was developed. Then using the method of thermohydrodynamic lubrication, the effect of the profile of top ring sliding face on the oil film thickness and friction losses was analyzed. The ring is width of 3mm and thickness of 4.5mm. Profiles in sliding face of the ring used are two types. Ring 1 has a flat in the middle and a roundness in the corner, and Ring 2 has a barrel face. The ring temperature on the sliding surface shows the characteristic temperature distribution, and the temperature difference between ring lower face and middle of ring has about 19 °C. The oil film thickness changed in a cycle increases with increase of barrel height. The friction mean effective pressure FMEP decreases with the increase of barrel height both Ring 1 and Ring 2. FMEP of Ring 2 is more effective than that of Ring 1.

O algoritmo proposto é avaliado considerando o Sistema 24-barras do IEEE.

Abstract:
Effects of pick-off ring configuration on the separation performance of a downscaled model of a steam separator for a boiling water nuclear reactor are examined using various types of pick-off rings. The experiments are conducted using air and water. Pressure drops in a barrel and a diffuser, and diameters and velocities of droplets at the exit of the barrel are measured using differential pressure transducers and particle doppler anemometry, respectively. As a result, the following conclusions are obtained: (1) the separation performance does not depend on the shape of pick-off ring, but strongly depends on the width of the gap between the pick-off ring and the barrel wall, (2) the pressure drop in the barrel is well evaluated using the interfacial friction factor for unstable film flows, and (3) the radial distribution of droplet velocity at the exit of the separator is of use for the evaluation of carry-under.
