Abstract:
IntroductionAkathisia is probably the most common and one of the most distressing of the movement disorders associated with antipsychotic drugs. Little is known about its prevalence and its risk factors in real-world psychotic and bipolar patients to date.ObjectivesThe main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of akathisia and to determine the risk factors and the treatments associated with it in a sample of Tunisian patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder.MethodsSeventy-four patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder were included and assessed with a validated scale: the Barnes Akathisia scale (BAS). Ongoing psychotropic treatments were recorded.ResultsThe global prevalence of akathisia (as defined by a score ≥ 2 on the global akathisia subscale of the BAS) was 20.5%. Akathisia was significantly more common in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder than in patients with Bipolar disorder (27.5% vs 9.4%; P = 0.049). However, the prevalence of akathisia did not differ according to sex, age, the illness duration, the presence of a comorbid anxiety disorder, the number of antipsychotics used, the type of the used antipsychotic (first vs second-generation), the antipsychotic chlorpromazine-equivalent total dosage, the use of benzodiazepines or anticholinergics, or the reported drug compliance.ConclusionsAkathisia seems to be more common in some psychiatric disorders than in others such as schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Longitudinal studies would be required to draw any firm conclusions concerning the factors involved in the emergence of akathisia.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to assess the effects of discovery and creation behaviour in opportunity identification on firm performance in a developing country context. By doing so, the study adds new knowledge and insights in researching the entrepreneurial behaviour types at the start-up phase and their eventual effects on firm performance.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted amongst Ethiopian tour operators (n = 118), which are formally established small tourism firms. A survey questionnaire, which is the main data gathering tool in this study, was prepared based on a distinction between discovery and creation behaviour with regard to the seven entrepreneurial actions described by Alvarez and Barney (2007). Hence, 14 multiple-item measurement scales were derived to define the entrepreneurial behaviour types. Firm performance was measured using four indicators. A regression analysis was conducted to predict the effect of entrepreneurial behaviour at the start-up phase on firm performance.FindingsThe findings of this study provide consistent support for the hypothesis that tour-operating firms in Ethiopia founded through creation behaviour instead of discovery behaviour are performing better in terms of sales, employment, profit and asset size change.Research limitations/implicationsThe theoretical contribution of this study is two-fold. First, it provides a scale for measuring the extent to which discovery and/or creation opportunity identification played a role in the start-up phase of the business. Second, the study assesses the effects of discovery behaviour and creation behaviour in opportunity identification on firm performance in a developing country context.Originality/valueThe entrepreneurs' behaviour through which they identify and pursue new opportunities may have a considerable effect on the subsequent performance of their newly established firms. It is, therefore, important to understand effects, which result from differences in entrepreneurs' behaviour at the start-up phase, in terms of outcomes such as firm performance among small businesses. Nonetheless, there is little empirical research conducted in this regard, particularly in the context of developing countries. This study contributes to the literature of entrepreneurship by applying entrepreneurial behaviour types, i.e. discovery and creation, as determinants of small firms' performance in a developing country context. Furthermore, it is one of the few studies concentrating on formal instead of informal operations in an African context.

Abstract:
According to the resource based view (RBV) of the firm (Wernerfeldt, 1984; Barney, 2004) and distributed knowledge system view of the firm, knowledge is a critical organizational resource that contributes to superior performance if relevant KM capabilities are built and applied to the knowledge resources. The perspective that sound operations strategy applied to knowledge is necessary for a firm to take full advantage of knowledge management programmes is explored in this paper. The objective of this paper is to document empirical evidence from existing literature on the effect of KM process capability on performance of firms and to identify opportunities for further research which can generate more knowledge to help in the understanding of this relationship leading to the improvement of the contribution of knowledge to performance. An empirical literature survey method was used to collect information regarding KM process capability and its effect on performance. The results suggest that knowledge management process operations positively impact performance. Arising from these findings, it is proposed that studies be launched to determine the relative disposition and contribution of each of the KM process capabilities operations to performance. Such studies will guide organizations in building KM process capabilities and carrying out operations which can be leveraged for sustainable superior performance using knowledge resources.

Abstract:
Competitiveness of a firm is its capacity to achieve its targets. These targets are likely to be expressed in a variety of terms depending on the context (Barney 2002). Within a macroeconomic perspective, a competitive firm develops and sustains a level of performance that contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment opportunities, and the wealth of the people. From an entrepreneurial perspective, a competitive firm needs to survive in the market and to achieve market share and profitability. This paper deliberates regarding the theory of competitive advantage and discusses the role of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for augmenting SMEs' competitiveness.

Abstract:
Just as Michelangelo Buonarroti (1476-1564) worked as a sculptor, painter, architect and poet, Matthew Barney (1967) switches smoothly between various contemporary art forms. The oeuvre of this US artist includes performance, photography, drawing, design and film. Not coincidentally an art critic, writing in 1989, dubbed him 'The Michelangelo of genital art' and this was not just because of the many athletic nudes that people his oeuvre. The parallels between Barney (1967) and Michelangelo (1476-1564) are greater than one might think. In the article Senne Schrayen makes a comparison between Barney's current series of performances (started in 1987) called Drawing Restraint and Michelangelo's drawings of 1532 from a transhistorical perspective and giving close attention to the process of making the drawing.

Abstract:
This study concerns the infrared measurement of steady-state and transient temperatures of microscopic areas within the contact region formed by a magnetic tape passing over a simulated recording head. This research demonstrates that the tape surface temperature can be measured within specific limits of response time and sensitivity. Due to its high tranmissivity in the relevant infrared band, sapphire was chosen as the material to be used in the fabrication of a simulated recording head. A Barnes RM2A infrared microscope was the principle radiometer used, while a best effort was made in scanning with an AGA Thermovision 750. The friction force versus load characteristics of the head-magnetic tape interface were also observed. The high speed measurements were divided into two regimes; non-contact hydrodynamic film region, and tape-head contact regime. The temperature measurements displayed a strong correlation with the measured friction force versus load curve. Almost no temperature rise was found in the noncontact hydrodynamic film region while a temperature rise of a few degrees Celsius was found when there was tape-head contact. The results with the AGA Thermovision 750 were consistent with the measurements obtained with the Barnes RM2A.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is explore an organizational design that allows firms to invest in transferable strategic human capital. Strategic human capital requires considerable investment in training costs, effective compensation, opportunities for professional development and expectancy of long employment relationship within a firm. A firm can undertake investment in strategic knowledge and workers can engage in learning only in these circumstances. However, there are a number of risks that are associated with investment in strategic human capital within a firm. In this paper, the author argues that providing strategic human capital to other firms within alliances could be a strategy for leveraging resource. Strategic knowledge facilitates transactions between firms possessing co-specialized human capital and tangible resources. Organizational design of an alliance based on co-specialization allows to balance costs and returns for the human capital supplier, as well as for beneficiary and workers. Within an alliance, the human capital supplier provides workers to a beneficiary firm and coordinates their activities. Supplier specialized in human capital investment ensures improved performance, productivity and efficiency of workers. Possibility to form a greater pool of labor force and to centralize training allows optimizing cost and sharing risks associated with investment activity among alliance participants. Human resource practices in an alliance system foster long-term employment relationship. Entering an alliance increases number of job positions, professional development opportunities through horizontal mobility, promotion and learning opportunities for workers. Finally, alliances allow leveraging investment in human capital beyond a single organization. Design/methodology/approach – This paper conceptualizes the use of alliance based on co-specialization as a strategy to optimize investment in strategic human capital resource. It draws upon the resource-based view (Barney, 1991; Wernerfelt, 1995) and transaction cost theory (Coase, 1937; Williamson, 1981) to examine an alliance as a strategy for leveraging the human capital resources for accessing new markets, building reputation and sharing the risks across more than one organization. Findings – First, the paper reviews the theoretical literature on human capital as a strategic resource (Becker, 1962; Coff, 1997), its sourcing on internal and external labor markets and respective employment systems (Delery and Doty, 1996; Doeringer and Piore, 1971). Second, it focuses on the features of human capital resource (Barney, 1986; Chi, 1994; Doz and Hamel, 1998). Third, it conceptualizes the use of alliances based on co-specialization as organizational structures for investment in human capital across organizations and examines respective employment system and HR practices (Delery and Doty, 1996; Doeringer and Piore, 1971). As result, the author argues that an alliance can be an alternative mean to optimize returns on investment in human capital with strategic transferable knowledge. By consequence, the author describes an alliance employment system and illustrates the arguments with a case of human capital trading in a co-specialization alliance under a long-term management contract in the luxury hotel industry. Originality/value – This paper discusses collaborative ventures as a sourcing strategy of the human capital. An alliance strategy is relevant for sourcing the strategic human capital resources. Human capital resource can be accessed by firms through transfer of skills and organizational routines within collaborative agreements, such as alliances based on co-specialization. In this case, alliance is an organizational architecture between organizations that improves the efficiency and productivity, reduces marginal cost on training due to larger scale of operations and reduces risk by splitting investment in human capital and by offering more career and development opportunities for strategic knowledge workers.

Abstract:
Sponsorship, in advertising and marketing, has enjoyed considerable currency with managers, especially in the context of sporting events. However, this strategy option is constantly challenged by ambush marketing (which seeks an unofficial association with the event) as well as by a neither strategy (i.e. firms not undertaking either sponsorship or ambush marketing). At the core of all the three strategies is the expectation that a firm's association (official or unofficial) or non-association with a sporting event will result in certain benefits for the brand. This study measures and compares consumer responses to the three strategy options available to a firm for a sporting event. This research uses the Resource Advantage (RA) Theory to examine the interrelationships among the three types of firms and the environment in which these firms compete. RA theory posits that when a firm has a resource that is rare among competitors, then that resource has the potential for producing competitive advantage for that firm (Barney, 1991). The Hierarchy of Effects (HOE) model is used to formulate hypotheses regarding the possible consumer responses to the three strategy options. The HOE model predicts that consumers usually go through the stages of cognition, affect, and purchase intention after being exposed to a piece of promotion (i.e. communication). Sponsorship can be a source of competitive advantage as it may lead to greater consumer awareness, positive attitude, and a higher intention to purchase. Some firms may try to engage in ambush marketing. On the other hand, some other firms may choose to follow a neither strategy. This study is set in the context of an international sporting competition, the ICC Cricket World Cup held in South Africa, in 2003. It finds that while sponsorship is effective in creating awareness, it does not lead to liking and⁄or preference for the brand. Others are able to break the clutter in the world of intense competition where event-related promotions are seen as a means of fulfilling marketing objectives. Moreover, the relationship between attitude and intention to purchase is not significant for any of the three strategy options. These findings indicate that any association with an event provides scope for elementary messages which may be suitable for increasing awareness but does not lead to higher order effects of building positive attitude and intention to purchase.

Abstract:
It is recognised that a sustainable competitive advantage is a necessary condition for a firm to survive and prosper. Specifically, companies need to embark on real, substantive business initiatives that will accrue to the company an asymmetrical, firm‐specific resource that will not be perfectly imitable by competitors, to borrow from Barney’s (1986) parlance. Barney’s notion of imperfect imitability is see as crucial in ascertaining the long run efficacy of any potential source of competitive advantage. A sustainable competitive advantage is one which is of value, is rare, has few if any substitutes, and in particular is not easily copied (Barney, 1986). The acquisition of such a sustainable competitive advantage is seen as the whole point of planning and executive business level strategies.

Abstract:
Thinking marketing strategies from a resource-based perspective (Barney, 1991), proposing assets as either tangible, organizational and human, and from Constantin and Luch’s vision (1994), where strategic resources can be tanbigle or intangible, internal or external to the firm, raises a research approach on Marketing and Finance. According to Srivastava, Shervani and Fahey (1998) there are 3 market assets types, which generate firm value. Firm value can be measured by discounted cashflow, compromising marketing activities with value generation forcasts (Anderson, 1982; Day, Fahey, 1988; Doyle, 2000; Rust et al., 2004a). The economic value of marketing strategies and marketing metrics are calling strategy researchers’ and marketing managers’ attention, making clear the need for building a bridge able to articulate marketing and finance form a strategic perspective. This article proposes an analytical framework based on different scientific approaches envolving risk and return promoted by marketing strategies and points out advances concerning both methodological approaches and marketing strategies and its impact on firm metrics and value, usgin Srinivasan and Hanssens (2009) as a start point.

Abstract:
This paper describes case study research undertaken in six Iranian manufacturing companies aimed at advancing the understanding of the manufacturing strategy formation process. As shown in this study, culture, leadership, policy and incrementalism have their own undeniable roles in manufacturing strategy formation. Cultural factors impact on political factors, and political factors impact on individual factors. It could be useful To utilize formal business planning for firms interested in deliberative manufacturing strategy. In this study, we use Barnes's manufacturing strategy formation process as frameworks with some new changes. Also a case study methodology was used to investigate the process of formation of manufacturing strategy in six small manufacturing companies in Iran like Barnes did in the UK. The results of this study are the main features of the process of manufacturing strategy formation and manufacturing strategy formation model in the case companies. In the case study method, external validity is inevitably compromised due to the limited number of companies that can be studied. The demonstrated model in this study offers a comprehensible view in organizational and external contexts that can be used by manufacturing decision makers. Santrauka Straipsnyje aprašomi šešiose Irano gamybos įmonėse atlikti moksliniai tyrimai, įrodantys gamybos strategijos formavimo proceso reikšmę. Tyrimas nustatė, kad kultūra, vadovavimas ir politika turi savo neginčijamą įtaką gamybos strategijos formavimo procese. Kultūriniai veiksniai daro įtaką politiniams veiksniams, o politiniai veiksniai veikia individualius veiksnius. Gali būti naudinga naudoti formalų verslo planavimą formuojant įmonės gamybos strategiją. Šiame tyrime buvo naudojamas modifikuotas Barnes gamybos strategijos formavimo procesas. Barnes pavyzdžiu buvo siekiama ištirti gamybos strategijos formavimo procesą šešiose nedidelėse Irano gamybos įmonėse. Šio tyrimo rezultatai atskleidė tiriamų įmonių gamybos strategijos formavimo proceso ypatumus. Tyrimui neišvengiamo subjektyvumo suteikia ribotas ištirtų įmonių skaičius. Pasiūlytas modelis leidžia visapusiškai ištirti vidinę ir išorinę organizacijos aplinkas bei pasiūlyti sprendimus gamybos planuotojams.

Barney’s presentation of the resource-based view (RBV) profoundly shaped the trajectory of management scholarship. This article considers the RBV’s impact specifically on the field of strategic human capital resources. Although Barney is still highly relevant, I suggest that research has not sufficiently appreciated the role that individual and collective performance behavior and outcomes play in linking human capital resources to competitive advantage. An alternative, what might be called RBV2.0, posits that research needs to recognize that human capital resources are distinct from performance behavior and outcomes. Such an observation raises the question, “Resources for what?” Answering this question leads to several important insights. First, a given type of human capital resource is only important to the extent it is related to performance behavior and outcomes that contribute to competitive advantage. Second, performance behavior is largely strategy-specific and thus firm-specific. Third, firm specificity is not a characteristic of human capital resources but rather a function of the proximity of the resource to firm-specific performance behavior and outcomes. Consequently, “Performance” is the answer to the question, “Resources for what?” This emphasis on understanding human capital resource-performance relationships adds considerable precision into the RBV, helps resolve puzzles in the strategic human capital literature relating to firm specificity and performance mobility, and promotes a deeper understanding hiding latent within Barney’s original view.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to refine the resource-based theory of the firm. It intends to deal with key theoretical issues affecting the development of a model that empirically captures the relevance of knowledge to performance. The research task is not only to look inside the firm in search of candidates for a strategic resource, but also to better understand how a resource becomes strategic as the consequence of specific attributes. This approach has the potential of providing a relevant insight into the characteristics that resources must possess as well as a more effective way to compare their relative relevance to competitive advantage. Design/methodology/approach – Hypotheses are tested by a comprehensive panel data of 29 AIDS/HIV drugs from 1997 to 2010, covering the performance trajectory of more than 90 percent of all branded products in this segment. Findings – Based on the VRIO framework (Barney 1991, 2001a), which asserts that resources need to be valuable, rare, inimitable, and difficult to organize in order to become a source of sustainable competitive advantage, the paper derives seven empirical constructs of technological knowledge. Five of these constructs are statistically significant, explaining up to 36 percent of the variance in sales outcomes. Results show that the most important resource attributes are value and organizational capabilities. Inimitability is partially relevant, but rarity is not. Practical implications – Results suggest that the best way to generate competitive advantage is through continuous improvement of technological knowledge. This conclusion shows that knowledge heterogeneity is more strategically relevant to performance than knowledge immobility. Originality/value – Differently from previous papers, instead of measuring how much a resource (or its accumulated stock) influences competitive advantage, this paper identifies and measures the attributes through which the resource matters to market outcomes. It is not the resource itself, but its strategic attributes which actually generate differential benefits to firms.

Abstract:
There is a visible demand to increase the awareness for the efficacy and the advantages that e-banking has to offer to small enterprises; however, many other enterprises cannot conceive the possibility of running their business without e-banking. This study on approach of local firms towards e-banking is conducted by applying the Grounded Theory of Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss and the Critical Incident Technique, in order to identify the factors influencing the satisfaction of the business clients when using e-banking services. The empirical data were gathered through interviews. Factual findings establish the foundation for a more extended research aiming to reveal the satisfaction of the business clients with service of e-banking, simultaneously exploring opportunities which banks have to adopt in order to succeed in attracting and retaining the business clients.

Abstract:
The protection of wooden heritage buildings against fire, biodeterioration, robbery and vandalism is one of the most important tasks in the field of cultural property preservation. In Poland and other European countries, the most popular wood-made objects are historical wooden churches (Catholic and Orthodox ones), rural huts, cottages, sheds, barns and wooden wind mills which are like open air museums. Wood is the most common raw material that was used for the construction of these objects since ancient times. Generally these wooden objects are wholly combustible, they are mostly located beyond towns and difficult to guard and exposed to risk of setting on fire. Not everywhere there is a sufficient supply of water from water tanks and fire hydrant network. Moreover, there is a lack of good access ways for fire brigade vehicles and no fire detecting systems were installed in many of these objects. Unfortunately, fire retardant application is insufficient or totally absent in these heritage buildings. This manuscript presents general possibilities of the application of modern technology of fire retardancy systems intended for the protection the heritage objects against fire disaster. None or only minimal influence on an ancient object wood is the advantage of the above systems. The fire safety strategy for wooden buildings and historical sites requires an agreement and compromise between the point of view of art. Abstract:
This article aims to present cases where the adoption of emphasis on the strategy implementation in micro and small firms within the dominant paradigm of the Resource-Based View theory, a functionalist explanatory model, which reproduces sense making for superior and sustainable performance in high competitiveness sectors . According to Barney (1991), a response to superior performance is causal support within the Resource-Based View, later raised to the status of Resource-Based Theory. This theory is a superior explanatory basic model that explains that a firm’s performance can be explained by the way its remarkable resources are managed. This understanding guides the managers’ strategic thinking and explains why firms can, over time, expand markets, strengthen the brand, achieve higher profits and maintain competitive advantages, while others do not get the same success, even acting within the same industry. The research was qualitative through interviews of the firms’ leaders, using the method of multiple cases in micro and small firms of the industry, trade, services and agribusiness sector. As a contribution, the work identified that the strategy practices have a connection with the RBV theory and principles of emphasis on inside out management based on the VRIO theory (resources that are: Valuable, Rare, of difficult Imitation and can rely on Organization to effective management).

Abstract:
Elementary excitations in ferromagnetic superlattices are analyzed theoretically using the transfer matrix method. The method is extended to enable the study of the cases when the boundaries are not consisting of a single plane, but of a complete cell. In this way, semi-infinite superlattice, the interface between two superlattices and the film built of a superlattice are treated. However, it is shown that the choice of the transfer matrix strongly depends on the translational symmetry of the remaining part of the system. Energies of localized excitations are derived and compared both with bulk and the results of standard transfer matrix treatment proposed by Barnas. Also, a special Ansatz for spin amplitudes is proposed leading to identical results with the transfer matrix method and introducing large simplifications.

Abstract:
A multiple-imaging-plate detector system and focusing monochromator have been developed and successfully applied to the time-resolved study of phase transitions in Langmuir–Blodgett films by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD). The monochromator described here combines fixed-exit-beam height with sagittal focusing of the second crystal. The design is similar to that of Matsushita et al. [Matsushita, Ishikawa & Oyanagi (1986). Nucl. Instrum. Methods, A246, 377–379], with the exception that the motion of the first crystal is achieved via a computer-controlled X-Y translation table rather than a set of cams. The second crystal is a ribbed Si(111) wafer mounted in a four-point bending mechanism. The first reported application of imaging plates to a GIXD study was carried out by our group and proved to be very successful in the determination of thin-film structure [Foran, Peng, Steitz, Barnes & Gentle (1996). Langmuir, 12, 774–777]. To extend the capabilities of this system, an imaging-plate camera was designed and built which can accommodate up to 13 imaging plates (40 × 20 cm) inside the vacuum chamber of the main diffractometer at the Australian Beamline at the Photon Factory.

In this work, we investigate a thin-film polarizer for a high intensity of the electromagnetic (EM) beam based on Cr nano wire arrays. Commonly used thin-film polarizing components are very sensitive for high power of EM waves and can be easily damaged by focused beams. The solution to this problem could be the thin-film polarizer based on metallic subwavelengths structures. This type of optical element has huge resistance comparing to typical thin-film polarizers. However, designing such an optical element for proper wavelength of EM wave and transmissions is not easy task. Abstract:
This study examines the influence of green creativity to the green new product performances. Creativity is a key source of organization’s competitive advantage (Barney, 1991) and increases the likelihood of new product success by providing effective product differentiation (Song, 2018). Building on the thesis of Natural Resource-based view (Hart, 1995), we study the impact of green creativity on the performances of green new products. This study also shows that family involvement plays a role in the green performances of family businesses. We pay particular attention to family firms because of two reasons. First, family businesses represent a significant proportion of the corporate sector in both developed and developing countries (Faccio and Lang 2002). Second, family firms have different behavioral patterns when reacting to stakeholders’ pressures (Huaang, Ding, and Kao, 2009; Sharma and Sharma, 2011) for better environmental management practices. This study surveyed 134 family-owned, high-tech manufacturers in Taiwan. The findings show that the green creativity is positively and significantly related to green new product performances. Our analytical results also show that family involvement moderates the relationship between green creativity and green new product performances.

Full text
Abstract:
In front of globalization, hypercompetition and turbulence (D’Aveni, 1994, 1995), it’s more and more frequent to see inter-firms relationships increase exponentially: alliances, partnerships, social groups, clans. Networks are becoming a prevailing organizational form in the21st century (Cravens, Piercy, 1994). The unit of analysis, in this article, is the strategic systems and more precisely the strategic network that develops within a territory (business districts, destinations) or a virtual set and that is even denser and more complex than ordinary networks: local resources can be relevant for the whole aggregate and relations are also physically or virtually particularly closed. Strategic networks and inter-firm collaborations have often been analysed with respect to their main success factors. Less attention has been paid to the more obscure and less satisfying aspects that someway explain why, in some cases, they fail or at least do not take off. Even theoretical frameworks usually adopted as Resource-Based Theory (Rumelt, 1982; Wernerfelt, 1984; Barney, 1991, 2007) Transaction Cost Economics (Williamson, 1975, 1981) and Social Network Theory (Granovetter, 1973, 1982; Lieberskind et al., 1996, Wasserman, Faust, 1999) are used according to a positive approach, aimed at finding and analyzing mainly successful initiatives. The aim of this article is to analyse, in particular, situations of distrust, that can either continue pushing firms not to cooperate or rather evolve towards more trustful situations and therefore with more chances of really developing business networks. A specific model is proposed, to manage distrust and to evolve towards trustful situations. The process, however, requires a specific intervention of a network governance actor, that can stimulate it. This actor must have distinctive capabilities and competences to manage the process. The proposed model is developed with the help of Game Theory (Fudemberg, Tyrole, 1991; Gibbons, 1992; Myerson, 2002, 2006) and can be applied empirically to verify what prevents actors from cooperating and how the governance actor can lead the process towards trust situations. Game theory is also used to study the possible level of coopetition (Brandenbruger, Nalebuff, 1996), that is the collaboration that can be put forward among competitors. Firms involved in these processes vary their own approaches both in terms of realizing the opportunities brought about by collaboration and of assuming a positive vs opportunistic behaviour. But the latter often prevails….The results offered by the model will also have some managerial implications since they should be able to give useful hints to decision makers on how to govern distrust. The model will be tested empirically on a sample of firms operating in tourism sector in Southern Italy, involved in local networks. In tourism industry, cooperation between players operating in the same destination is something needed to compete against global destinations. It will be then applied to other industries characterized by small and medium enterprises that have invested in the same area/district, with a high potential for collaboration.

Abstract:
On a number of occasions between 1970 and 1984, measurements of mass balance, surface velocity, and surface elevation were made along a 10.2 km flow line extending from the divide to the margin on Barnes Ice Cap, Baffin Island, Canada. The average mass balance rate on this Arctic ice cap appears to be controlled principally by summer temperature. Years of negative mass balance dominated during the 14 year period of the study; according to our measurements, this should have resulted in a thinning of an average of 2.65 m along the flow line. Surface-elevation measurements, however, suggest that the glacier thinned only ~ 1.7 m during this time period. The slightly compressive mean transverse strain can account for ~ 0.20 m of the discrepancy between these two figures. The rest is attributed to errors in mass balance. In particular, increases in density of old firn and freezing of water in crevasses could not be evaluated adequately from our measurements. The thinning was not uniform. Near the margin the glacier thinned ~ 5 m and near the divide, ~ 2.5 m, but between 3.5 and 5.5 km from the divide there seems to have been no substantial change in thickness. Thus, along the down-glacier half of the flow line the decrease in thickness was accompanied by an increase in slope.Within 4 km of the margin the decrease in thickness resulted in a decrease in horizontal velocity of up to ~ 15%, despite the increase in slope. Higher on the glacier, however, the horizontal velocity increased ~ 5%. These changes are broadly consistent with those estimated from the changes in shear stress calculated using the hydrostatic approximation.

Abstract. DMRT-ML is a physically-based numerical model designed to compute the thermal microwave emission of a given snowpack. Its main application is the simulation of brightness temperatures at frequencies in the range 1–200 GHz similar to those acquired routinely by space-based microwave radiometers. The model is based on the Dense Media Radiative Transfer (DMRT) theory for the computation of the snow scattering and extinction coefficients and on the Discrete Ordinate Method (DISORT) to numerically solve the radiative transfer equation. The snowpack is modeled as a stack of multiple horizontal snow layers and an optional underlying interface representing the soil or the bottom ice. The model handles both dry and wet snow conditions. Such a general design allows the user to account for a wide range of snow conditions. Hitherto, the model has been used to simulate the thermal emission of the deep firn on ice sheets, shallow snowpacks overlying soil in Arctic and Alpine regions, and overlying ice on the large ice-sheet margins and glaciers. DMRT-ML has thus been validated in three very different conditions: Antarctica, Barnes Ice Cap (Canada) and Canadian tundra. It has been recently used in conjunction with inverse methods to retrieve snow grain size from remote sensing data. Abstract:
AbstractAir-, flue-, fire-, and sun-cured, tobacco types require post-harvest curing of green leaves to produce optimum subjective and objective qualities for storage and subsequent processing and manufacture. Materials for construction of curing barns vary widely between countries. The major use of heating fuels within such structures is for flue-cured tobacco. Choice of energy sources, coal, wood, oil or gas depends on local availability, cost, and relative efficiencies. The vital importance of reducing such materials to a minimum has been recognised for many years by research into improving barn and furnace design and construction. Consumption of wood for curing has been shown to represent a minute proportion of total world wide consumer use. To ensure local availability, the growing of trees by flue cured farmers on a personal, self-sufficient, sustainable basis is well underway in parts of Africa, Asia, and South and Central America. Tobacco production, within an environmental farming system, on an economic basis, is discussed and strongly stressed.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In August 1993, Tampa Bay, Florida was the scene of a devastating collision between a freighter and two barges. All three vessels came together in a moment of panic that left Tampa Bay looking like a war zone of burning and sinking wrecks. Parts of Tampa Bay were strewn with heavy fuel oil after the August 10 accident between the 345-foot Philippine-flagged freighter Balsa 37, which had been headed out of Tampa Bay, and two tug/barge units, Seafarer/Ocean 255 and Fred Bouchard B. No 155. This collision resulted in an explosion that burned out of control until the Tampa Fire Department extinguished it later that evening. Since the time of this collision, there have been major improvements made in firefighting response capabilities in the Tampa Bay area. The multi-level response community has been exercised extensively, including an exercise involving the evacuation of a cruise ship. Another exercise noted improvements to the response resources and capabilities in a field training exercise where the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) Tampa, Tampa Fire Department, Tampa Port Authority, and Hvide Marine Towing deployed equipment to the scene of a simulated shipboard fire. The Tampa Port Authority supplied a 210-foot roll on-roll off (ro-ro) barge with a 78-foot beam capable of loading 73,230 pounds (32.1 long tons). The barge provided easy mobilization for the Tampa Fire Department to load four engine companies, a foam trailer, one Emergency Medical Service (EMS) vehicle, and all had sufficient room to work. Hvide Marine Towing provided a tug to deploy the ro-ro barge in a stern tow. This exercise demonstrated the joint cooperation and partnership between federal, state, city, and private industry to work together and improve the marine firefighting response posture in Tampa Bay. With every level of government under budget constraints, it is important to look for multi-purpose equipment and resources that will get the job done. Tampa Port Authority's ro-ro barge has presented itself as a unique firefighting resource that can be used as a platform to carry the fire engines from the city or county. The barge can reach any part of the port quickly and can handle a vessel or waterfront situation, thus improving the marine firefighting response posture in the port.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT On January 18, 1994, unleaded gasoline began entering the Mississippi River through the bank adjacent to an oil distribution/storage facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Reported as a minor, per the National Contingency Plan, it developed into a major discharge. Of the 364,930 gallons lost, 140,000 gallons discharged into the river. The amount of product recovered from all sources was 107,000 gallons. The emergency phase of the response ran from January 18 to 24. Not until January 24 was the cause determined to be a 10.7 ft by ¼ in fracture near the center of the floor of a two million gallon tank. Secondary containment showed no evidence of the catastrophic release. The extreme cold permitted the initial booming of the gasoline, but recovery was complicated by flowing river ice, ice shelves, temperatures that froze equipment, and access down 45 feet of snow-covered riprap. Elastol, fire-fighting foam, barges, weir and barrel skimmers, and vacuum trucks were utilized for water and land recovery operations. Safety concerns were paramount for the federal, state, and local personnel and yet there was a demonstrated weakness in timely development and enforcement of the comprehensive site safety plan. This unusual spill heightened the awareness of many prevention and response issues.

Abstract:
This article discusses that a probabilistic study showed that the use of double-hulled shuttle tankers could reduce the probability of spillage resulting from collisions, contact with non-ship objects, and groundings by 75 percent. American petroleum companies are already using double-hulled tankers. The efficacy of double-hulled vessels in preventing environmental threats was borne out in October 1997 by Conoco Inc.’s tanker Guardian. Conoco, based in Houston, has operated a 100 percent double-hulled U.S. tanker fleet since August 1998. Indeed, the company decided to build only double-hulled tankers months before Congress passed OPA 1990. Two new craft will join Conoco’s flotilla of four twin-hulled vessels in 1999. Conoco engineers met a number of challenges when they embarked on building a double-hulled fleet. Double-hulled vessels are inherently more expensive than single-hulled vessels. Maritrans Operating Partners LP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maritrans Inc. in Philadelphia, operator and owner of one of the nation’s largest fleets of oil tankers, tugboats, and oceangoing petroleum tank barges, found a way to reduce those costs, which may serve as a model for other shipping firms. The 65-year-old company converted a two-decade-old single-hulled tank barge into a double-hulled vessel.
