Abstract:
This thesis combines stylistics with tools and methods from corpus linguistics to investigate character and characterisation in Julian Barnes' novel Talking It Over. The analysis is guided by Culpeper's (2001) checklist of textual character cues, which I first assess and then amend in I order to take into account the presence of a narrator in prose fiction. The corpus analysis uses primarily WMatrix (Rayson 2009), but is assisted, when necessary, by AntConc (Anthony2011). Having sketched a philosophical background to notions of extra-linguistic space through reference to Plato, Kant, Hegel and Lacan, the first chapter considers what is distinctive in the theories of space provided by Kristeva, who (in Revolution in Poetic Language) develops Plato'

Abstract:
Barnes’ A History of the World in ½ Chapters constructs an unconventional approach to history from the very beginning. The non-traditional narrative structure differs from the chronological narrative typical of history books, since this novelist´s account exposes different historical world events without following a definite timeline. Moreover, the novel has many different narrative voices which convey a different perception and experience of same events. This use of form indicates an unorthodox view of history.

This dissertation addresses the narrative construction of Russian Cultural Memory in the work of Julian Barnes. The literary analysis of the selected texts reflects upon the significance of blurred borders between cultural and communicative dimensions of memory, and a metonymic and metaphorical intertextuality, thus challenging the belief in a homogeneous national identity. Conveying the idea that memories are always constructed, The Lemon Table (2004) displays the memory process as a transcultural mode of the creation of identities.
