Aston, Joshua N. Torture Behind Bars. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190120986.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Although considered an ancient concept, torture is still practised globally, and with more meticulousness and sophistication than ever before. Custodial violence refers to a form of torture that is experienced physically, psychologically, or emotionally in the custody of a lawful authority. The international legal regime on torture is an area of convergence between international human rights law and humanitarian law, both of which condemn torture in any form. Torture Behind Bars analyses the context of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners and crimes committed by the members of the police force. This may be in the form of custodial violence, or may begin from the point of detention and continue to the point of post-custody. The author reviews the role and accountability of the police force in India in the light of the reports of various national and international human rights committees, non-governmental organizations, and other independent reports. The book highlights several such cases which blatantly disregard the law meant for upholding the human rights and dignity of the individuals.

Ellis, Steven J. R. The Role of Retail in the Roman City. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198769934.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter concludes the book by examining the extent to which shops and bars were deeply integrated into the social and structural underpinnings of Roman urbanism. It looks more closely at the very things being retailed in bars: so, something of the menu of the Roman food and drink outlet. It also considers the role of shops and bars in the social and economic life of the city, and the extent to which these types of spaces serve as an index of urban living conditions. The aim of the chapter, indeed of the book, is not simply to argue for the “importance” of retail outlets to Roman life. It is rather to stimulate more and better ways to integrate studies of Roman retail into our growing understanding of cities and their urban communities.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the rise of conflicted, multilingual ideas of Englishness and nationhood in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Extended discussion is offered of the Middle English romance Havelok, in terms of its representations of power and justice; the French and English Brut histories, and their vernacular views of the recent past; philosophies of kingship and their role in the Barons’ Wars and the deposition of Edward II; the rise of parliament, the importance of Magna Carta, and the idea of constitutional government; the role of the vernaculars in spreading critical and historical ideas; a rise in class conflict, and social and public discourse of complaint.

Ferstman, Carla. Challenging the Conduct of International Organizations before Domestic Courts. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808442.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter is about domestic courts. Victims often have no other option than to seek a remedy against an international organization before domestic courts. This is so even though the domestic character of such courts does not lend well to them playing this particular adjudicative role with regard to disputes concerning international organizations and organizational immunities from the jurisdiction of domestic courts are near absolute. Unlike the progressive recognition of restrictions to the immunity of States and their agents, there have been only limited parallel developments in the domain of organizational immunity. The chapter considers the extent of immunities and other jurisdictional bars before domestic courts and considers the practice of international organizations to waive immunity.

Abstract:
This book examines the role of the Chinese in the lumber trade in the American West during the late nineteenth century, with a focus on the Sierra Nevada in the 1870s to 1890s. It looks at Chinese laborers' contribution to the building of the American West by analyzing their migration, their communities and lifestyles, lived experiences, transnationalism, and their work in relationship to mining and railroad construction. It also considers the timber barons and companies that employed Chinese workers, their departure from the Sierra Nevada forests, and the anti-Chinese sentiment that they endured. It shows that Chinese immigrants new to North America were first attracted to mining, but they turned to other work, such as logging, when they met with resistance and opposition from miners. The book also challenges some of the popular stereotypes that developed during this period of emerging unionism, along with the assumption of “cheap Chinese labor” that has been used to interpret the Chinese experience in late-nineteenth-century America.

Full text
Abstract:
The question raised at the end of Chapter 2—“what would a world without the poor being left out in the cold look like?”—finds a response in the poem “Au Cabaret-vert, cinq heures du soir”: namely, such a world would look like the modest utopia of a working-class cabaret, a space of pleasure, idleness, and community in which the brutalizing rhythms and discipline of the working day are negated in and by a poetry of the everyday. (Particular attention will be paid here to the prosodic and metric structure of the alexandrine, and the importance of irregular forms such as the “libertine sonnet.”) Foregrounded in this chapter, finally, is the rhetorical, cultural, and political role that sites of working-class “indisciplinarity” such as bars and cabarets played in Second Empire political and literary discourse on class difference and democracy.

Guins, Raiford. Atari Design. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781474284561.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing from deep archival research and extensive interviews, Atari Design is a rich, historical study of how Atari’s industrial and graphic designers contributed to the development of the coin-op cabinet. Innovative game design played a key role in the growth of Atari – from Pong to Asteroids and beyond – but fun, challenging, and exciting game play was not unique to the famous Silicon Valley company. What set it apart from its competitors was innovation in cabinet design. Atari did not just make games, it designed products for environments. With “tasteful packaging”, Atari exceeded traditional locations like bars, amusement parks, and arcades, developing the look and feel of their game cabinets for new locations such as fast food restaurants, department stores, country clubs, university unions, and airports, making game-play a ubiquitous social and cultural experience. By actively shaping the interaction between user and machine, overcoming styling limitations and generating a distinct corporate identity, Atari designed products that impacted the everyday visual and material culture of the late 20th century. Design was never an afterthought at Atari.

Full text
Abstract:
Public political debate about migration has become increasingly important and increasingly heated; substantive engagement with the morality of migration, however, is more uncommon. This book defends a moderate account of the right to exclude, on which the state may exclude some unwanted would-be migrants—but on which there are significant constraints on how and when that right can be exercised. The book grounds this in a particular vision of how exclusion might be justified, on which states are possessed of a presumptive right to avoid unwanted forms of political relationship. This account of the right to exclude is then applied in more specific questions of justice in migration, such as the permissibility of travel bans and carrier sanctions. The book also offers a particular vision about how to go beyond questions of right and liberal justice, toward a declaration of the sort of community we wish to be. The book identifies the moral notion of mercy as a central one for the moral analysis of migration; we ought to show mercy and justice in the construction of migration policy, and each of these moral norms has a role to play in public discourse.

Roach, Rebecca. Literature and the Rise of the Interview. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198825418.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines the way in which authors have engaged with the interview form, and interviewing as a literary practice, over the last 150 years. Shaped by a longer tradition around the art of dialogue, interviews themselves are a latecomer, only emerging as a form alongside new technologies of mass and mediated communication in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. However, they have been an enormously successful innovation: interviews proliferate across contemporary culture and have become a dominant means by which authors publicize their works today. Drawing on archival materials, printed illustrations, and audiovisual media, the book tells the story of how writers and critics have engaged (or refused to engage) with this innovation. Attending to interviews and interviewing in English allows us to examine familiar topics, such as modernist autonomy, and authors, including Henry James, Djuna Barnes, and J. M. Coetzee, from new perspectives. Exposing the interview’s curiously liminal position in the literary imagination, the book goes behind the proverbial scenes to analyse what this might tell us about conceptions of literature, authorship, celebrity, criticism, and reading communities across the twentieth century. The book also engages with wider uses of the interview in sociology, law, medicine, market research, and broadcasting to argue that the interview has played a key role in recording and shaping our understanding of subjectivity and publics in modernity.
