Abstract:
AbstractPrecambrian continental extension is described in detail for the first time in the Victoria Land segment of the Transantarctic Mountains and is comparable with plume related intercontinental rifting of the Afar area, Africa. The Baronick Formation comprises igneous-derived conglomerate, marble and volcanic to sub-volcanic igneous layers. Volcanic and carbonate horizons were eroded in a fluvial or marine environment and provided debris for mass flow and slump deposits which formed in a marginal marine basin in the Precambrian. Clasts in these deposits include basalt, trachyte and comendite, and along with the interbedded volcanic layers of basalt, trachyte and quartz syenite, indicate proximity and contemporaneity of volcanic activity. Igneous layers and source rocks for clasts of the Baronick Formation have an enriched MORB chemistry and underwent albitization of calcic feldspar before erosion and conglomerate deposition. The Highway Suite forms a kilometre-scale body of gabbro and dolerite plugs and is interpreted as a slice of transitional continental oceanic crust. The chemistry of all igneous rocks suggests a continental rift environment and the associated sediments are consistent with such a setting. The Baronick Formation was locally intruded by sills of the Highway Suite; however, the main body of the Highway Suite was juxtaposed against the Baronick Formation during greenschist facies shearing before c. 551 Ma.

Abstract:
Synthetic seeds can be an alternative for those species in which botanical seeds are not viable. One of the major problems of in vitro plant cultivation is the high level of somaclonal variation. The most common factors affecting somaclonal variation are genotype, explant source, in vitro period and cultivation conditions in which the culture is established. In this work, calli were induced using leaf and stem explants of the commercial potato cultivars Achat, Baraka, Baronesa, Bintje, and Contenda in MS culture media supplemented with 1.65 mM of picloram and 11.5 mM of 2,4-D. Seventy and 90 days after induction, DNA samples of 40 calli were compared concerning the effects of the two explant (leaf and stem) and two growth regulator sources on five potatoes cultivars. A total of 20 arbitrary sequence primers were evaluated. The RAPD pattern generated by these primers suggested a high percentage of polymorphic fragments among the five genotypes, indicating a high level of genetic variation among cultivars. Cultivar Baronesa showed the highest number of polymorphic fragments for all treatments. The cultivar Contenda showed the smallest somaclonal variation, for most of the treatments, except for the treatment which consisted of stem explants, picloram (1.65 mM) application, and a 70-day period of callus formation. 'Contenda' is, therefore, the most suitable cultivar for synthetic seed production.

Abstract:
Barona arcuata, n.gen et n.sp., a left forewing of a relatively large cockroach of the Order Blattaria, is described from mesosaur-bearing lagoonal shales of the Mangrullo Formation (north-eastern Uruguay). While most of the insect remains recovered from the Mangrullo Formation come from sandy limestones, associated to scarce isolated mesosaur bones and pygocephalomorph crustaceans, the cockroach wing here described was found in the overlaying green to brownish, gray and dark black shales associated to intercalated bentonites and evaporitic gypsum crystals.Barona arcuatashares some features with typical Late Carboniferous taxa such as its general venation pattern and outline of the wing, four main and powerful veins arising close together from near the base of the wing, Sc simple forked, pectinate, reaching the costal border through a long fork, R and M bifurcating and terminating in the wing margin above and below the apex respectively, short and narrow CuA, and the presence of a broad interspace between CuP and AA. Cross venation seems to be absent or it was not preserved. Some characters might relateBarona arcuatato the Late Carboniferous-Early Permian Neothroblattinidae such as the presence of sigmoidal veins in the anal area, a condition not found in any of the remaining representatives of the Palaeozoic Blattaria. Intriguingly, the Uruguayan blattarian also presents a strong similarity withQilianiblatta namurensisZhang, Schneider & Hong, 2012 from the Westphalian of China, clearly a smaller taxon that is also difficult to relate to any of the preexistent families. The apparent plesiomorphic venation pattern of the new species which is reminiscent of that present in the oldest known blattarians, is in agreement with a Permo-Carboniferous (Gzhelian-Asselian) age for the Mangrullo Formation also supported by the presence of a macrofloral assemblage dominated by arborescent lepidondendrids and other lycopsids and the pygocephalid-like morphology of the pygocephalomorph crustaceans from the same levels.

Abstract:
Amber from the Dominican Republic is famous for the high quality, frequency, and diversity of organic fossils found as inclusions in this mineral (Grimaldi, 1996; Poinar & Poinar, 1999). However, its geological age of origin remains a continuing source of controversy. Over the years a wide variety of age estimates have been made for occurrences of Dominican amber, ranging from Cretaceous (Brouwer & Brouwer, 1982) to Late Eocene (Lambert et al., 1985) to pre-Lower Miocene (Baroni-Urbani & Saunders, 1982). Some authors have also favored a spread of ages that covers much of the Cenozoic (e.g., 40 or 45 Ma to 15 Ma; Poinar & Poinar, 1999). Iturralde-Vinent & MacPhee (1996) attempted to resolve discrepancies in age assignments by taking a multi-pronged analytical approach which yielded a best-fit estimate of mid-Miocene age (20–15 Ma). This estimate has been widely accepted and additionally corroborated by new studies (Iturralde-Vinent, 2001; Ortega-Ariza et al., 2015). However, Braga et al. (2012) have challenged the assessment of Iturralde-Vinent & MacPhee (1996) by arguing for a Pliocene–early Pleistocene date for the amber-bearing Yanigua Formation. Here we address the sources of disagreement and suggest a solution.

Abstract:
Somaclonal variation has been one way to create variants that could be used in the breeding programs. However, initial explants may not be useful if they show small leaves or nondeveloped stems. The aim of this work was to find a tissue culture medium so that potato shoots cultured in vitro could regenerate somatic material for use in trials aimed at somaclonal variation. Shoots of `Baronesa' and `Monte Bonito' were inoculated in media with or without activated charcoal (3.0 g–liter–1), BAP (1.0 g–liter–1), and different MS salt concentrations (50%, 75%, and 100%). After 30 days in controlled conditions (25C, 16-h photoperiod, and 2000 lux), BAP with activated charcoal improved the percentage of dry matter, and at higher MS salt concentrations, a better response was achieved for `Monte Bonito'. However, the presence of activated charcoal improved leaf development and stimulated higher shoot and bud formation, especially for `Monte Bonito'. This somatic material can be used to initiate callogenesis trials successfully.

Abstract:
The interaction effects between total solar radiation, air temperature and relative humidity with different concentrations of the plant growth regulator triapenthenol (Baronet) on the vegetative growth and the formation of flower buds of potted gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides Ellis) plants were studied in glasshouse experiments.Triapenthenol was applied as a soil drench at concentrations of 0, 70, 140 and 280 mg L–1 to plants under each of three radiation levels of about 250 (P1), 90 (P2) and 25 (P3) Wm−2. It was established that the maximum temperature was the most critical environmental factor to plant development at all radiation levels. Lengths of new lateral shoots after pinching and the number of flower buds/plant were significantly reduced when radiation was reduced and triapenthenol concentrations increased. The interaction between total radiation and triapenthenol concentration significantly affected the number of flower buds/plant. An increase in triapenthenol concentration and a reduction of total radiation caused increased wrinkling of the leaves. In the unshaded plot (P1), the 140 mg L−1 triapenthenol concentration produced high-quality plants that were shorter than the untreated ones with more flower buds/plant during the growth period. In the moderately shaded plot (P2), the best market-quality plants were those treated with 70 mg L−1 triapenthenol. Key words: Gardenia jasminoides, temperature, total solar radiation, triapenthenol, relative humidity

Abstract:

Wrigley-Carr, Robyn. "The Baron, his niece and friends : Friedrich von Hügel as a spiritual director, 1915-1925." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3588.

Full text
Abstract:
While the practice of spiritual direction is widespread and increasingly popular, there has been relatively little research on the practices of those perceived to be exemplary spiritual directors. The primary focus of this dissertation is Baron Friedrich von Hügel's spiritual direction of Gwendolen Greene, during the final decade of his life (1915-1925). It also analyses his direction of nine other individuals during this same period, enabling one to recognise and evaluate recurring trends in von Hügel's approach to spiritual nurture. The key to the interpretation of von Hügel's approach is his conception of the 'Three Elements of Religion,' the Mystical, Intellectual and Institutional Elements. The thesis illustrates through analysis of von Hügel's correspondence and diaries the extent to which these shape his whole approach to spiritual direction. The research is archival, focusing on von Hügel's letters of spiritual direction and his personal diaries. The methodology is critical historical research, based on a close reading and assessment of the materials available. To this end, a great deal of original material is unearthed and discussed for the purposes of articulating and evaluating the nature of von Hügel's role as a spiritual director. The findings of this investigation indicate strengths and weaknesses in von Hügel's approach to spiritual direction. His primary contribution is his articulation and utilisation of the 'Three Elements of Religion.' These provide a balanced and holistic approach to spiritual direction. The primary weaknesses in his approach to spiritual direction are evident when he succumbs to values more indicative of the age in which he lived, than of the essence of the Christian tradition.

Casabianca, Denis de. "Le sens de l'esprit : les sciences et les arts : formations du regard dans "L'Esprit des lois"." Aix-Marseille 1, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002AIX10045.

Full text
Abstract:

Bens, Ashley Elizabeth. "Architecture of deposits formed in a tectonically generated tidal strait, upper Baronia Fm., Ager Basin, South Central Pyrenees, Spain." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-05-3429.

Full text
Abstract:
The upper Baronia Fm. of the Ager Basin, Spain, is composed of a hierarchy of prominently stacked sets of primarily unidirectional cross-strata in units up to 40m thick. These large sets of cross-strata are interpreted as deposits of migrating subaqueous tidal simple dunes, compound dunes, and compound dune complexes within an approximately 10km wide north-east to south-west oriented seaway with water depths of a calculated 60-90m. These interpretations are opposed to prior interpretations of the upper Baronia Fm. which suggests deposits were formed by tidal bars within a deltaic environment (Mutti et al., 1985). Dunes developed due to dominantly north-east directed tidal currents driven through the strait by tidal phase differences between the two bodies of water (Mediterranean and Atlantic basins) connected by the seaway. Evidence for syn-tectonic deposition further constrains timing of movement of the northern basin bounding Montsec thrust to the early Eocene. Indicators for movement on the Montsec thrust include the development of the Ager Basin elongate to the thrust front, and syn-tectonic signals in the fill of the basin such as local conglomerate wedges and emplacement of olistoliths. Individual cross-stratified successions are interpreted to have formed with variable flow velocity and orientation, resulting in a basin wide stacking of compound dune complexes. These compound dune complexes form cross stratified successions which are distributed throughout the basin according to the variable current speeds, dune size which impacts migration, and sediment availability during deposition. This results in the observed distributions of muddy and sandy sediments, where finer grained materials accumulate preferentially in the low energy troughs of the hierarchy of compound dunes.<br>text

Abstract:
This chapter contrasts the perspective of Antoine de Chandieu’s contemporaries regarding his importance with the perspective of scholarship since that time. Whereas at Theodore Beza’s death, poets represented Chandieu with silver, John Calvin with gold, and Beza with bronze, since then Chandieu has been forgotten. Yet Chandieu wrote six “theological and scholastic” treatises in the 1580s that were highly influential in Reformed theology and were responded to by opponents repeatedly. His Opera Theologica went through five editions after his death. He was also highly instrumental in the formation of the French Reformed Churches as a federation with a unique church order, one later copied by many other Reformed churches. Besides, as a French baron, he played a noteworthy role in the politics of France. The argument, plan, and outline of the book are found at the close of this chapter.
