Abstract:
Spatial layout optimization is a core of existing barracks renewal. Distinguishing from new built barracks, existing barrack spatial layout optimization needs to pay more attention to solve the contradiction between current and future. So in this chapter, we develop six primary design keys applied to existing barracks including harmony relations between barrack and its surrounding environment, emphasis on weakness construction, optimize allocation, improve security defense capabilities, enhance artistry of spatial layout and realize the whole structure optimization. Reference to ancient classical fortification thoughts and current construction conditions, we also explore 5 tactics to optimize existing barracks spatial layout , namely, function integration method, node co-ordinate method, axis control method, three-dimensional space construction method, as well as idle land reuse method. Finally, we choose one tipical case to integrated apply the above keys and tactics from theoretical and practical fields promoting the sustainable development of existing barrack .

Abstract:
This paper examines the origins and transformations of barracks in modern Japan. The legal foundation for barracks emerged after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when their establishment was permitted to aid in the reconstruction of the disaster-affected areas. The immediate postwar period saw a resurgence of barracks in significant numbers. Focusing on the barrack areas in postwar Kobe, this paper argues that the criminalization of barracks is closely linked to the emergence of developmentalism, which is rooted in the prewar and wartime experiences of colonial spatial development.

Abstract:
The history of residential army barracks in Ireland has in recent years become a focus for more concerted study. 1 While a number of works focused upon individual barracks have been published over the years since the 1970s, 2 the first substantive consideration as to why a permanent country-wide network of barracks was built in Ireland in the late 1690s and early eighteenth century was first published in 2012. This work assessed why these barracks were built, how they were paid for, and ultimately what purposes they served. 3 Since then, additional work has been undertaken with regard to a more comprehensive identification and inventorying of over 360 such barracks built between 1690 and 1922. 4 However, while some consideration has been given to the impact of the building of a country-wide network of barracks upon cartographic practice, 5 there has been little to no assessment of the impact that such residential army barracks had upon patterns of settlement. It is the aim of this article to assess these interlinked elements of barrack-building, mapping, and settlement patterns in relation to each other in an eighteenth-century context, with a particular focus upon barracks built in County Armagh. 6

Abstract:
During the period of Vojna Krajina, a barracks complex was built in one of the main streets of Gospić, on Kaniška Street. It consisted of three buildings of barracks and three wooden structures. Alongside this complex, the commander’s apartment was also erected, also situated in Kaniška Street, and an officers’ mess hall located in the beginning of Budačka Street. Thanks to the analytical interpretation of the researched documentation of the new buildings in Domobranska Barracks in Gospić from the end of the 19th century, which is partly preserved in the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb, it is possible to reconstruct the course of construction of the main barracks building, changes within the barracks complex in the period preceding the First World War, as well as the changes in the barracs construction that were located in the community. This is the first study of Gospić military architecture from the transition period from the 19th to the 20th century.

Abstract:
The paper examines the post-Nigerian Civil War developments that led to the establishment of Natsinta Army Barracks, Katsina. Prior to 1966, the total strength of the Nigerian Army was merely 10,000. However, at the end of the war, the figure had risen to 250,000. This posed a serious challenge because the available barracks could not contain more than 10% of the personnel. In view of this, the Nigerian Army instructed the soldiers to leave the East because the region was saturated with artificial barracks. On the May 1, 1970 the 82-battalion arrived Katsina from Uli-Ahiala. They were accommodated at Sabongida, Gidan Kwakwa, Kayalwa, GRA and some hotels, as well as rented apartments in the city. By 1977, the project for a permanent barracks was completed at Natsinta Village. The barracks housed the 82 battalion and in 1996 the 35 battalion replaced them. The scope of the paper is 1970-2020 because it was in 1970 that 82 battalion arrived Katsina. The year 2020 is the terminal end of the paper because it was in that year that residential quarters for the personnel of 17 brigade was constructed in the barracks. The paper argues that the establishment of the barrack was a landmark in the history of modern Katsina metropolis. Natsinta had impacts on the socio-economic and security aspect of Katsina. Primary and secondary sources of historical research were used in writing this paper. Keywords: Natsinta, Sabongida, Katsina, Army Barracks, Battalion, Civil war.

Abstract:
"The hay barrack and other hay structures from the Land of Maramureș The hay barrack is a unique structure, consisting of four wooden poles which support a pyramidal roof, which can be raised or lowered, depending on the amount of hay sheltered from the weather. The Land of Maramureș (the northern half of the current Maramureș County), a quite well-known traditional life stronghold, can be considered ”the World’s hay capital”, a place where the hay culture is stronger than anywhere else and where the fields are filled up with ”classic” hay barracks (we estimate that there are probably 10-15,000 structures still left), with tens of thousands hay stacks, with thousands hay barracks with immovable roof and with countless drying hayracks of different types, so many that they change the look of the landscape. Moreover, there is the only place where the hay barracks are still used today exactly as in the Middle Ages (being filled regularly, manually, with traditionally harvested hay), and on a huge scale, not found elsewhere. With prehistoric origins, the most special structure, the hay barrack is considered to have its birthplace in the Netherlands, from where, since the 13th and 14th centuries, it spread over a large part of the continent, a territory bordered by Great Britain, France, Northern Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Northern Transylvania, Ukraine, Russia or Scandinavia. Today, everywhere, the unusual barrack has disappeared, except în Maramureș and the Netherlands - where there is the second largest group of preserved structures, but without being used anymore for storing hay. The study lists the main features of the construction, the villages where the hay barracks survive in more significant number, and it tries to find out the reason why this type of structure still persists so strongly in that region. At the end there are some old images from different places, as well as contemporary photographs taken in Maramureș, featuring various types of hay structures. Keywords: hay barrack, hay stack, hayrack, Maramureș, traditional farming "

Abstract:
It has been shown that the firefighter occupation leads to poor sleep quality and sleep architecture. Disturbed sleep in these occupations can lead to deleterious outcomes including a series of chronic diseases and illnesses such as CVD. Purpose: The aims were (1) to quantify firefighters’ sleep via polysomnography, (2) to identify differences between sleeping in the barracks versus sleeping at home, and (3) to compare firefighter data to age-matched normative data. We expected significant differences between both the home and the barrack conditions as well as significant differences when both conditions were compared to normative data. Methods: 10 male firefighters completed 3 nights of polysomnography recordings (SleepProfilerTM (Advanced Brain Monitoring, Carlsbad, CA, USA)) counterbalanced in both their own beds or barracks. A one-way rmANOVA statistical analysis was used to determine differences in sleep values with a Bonferroni correction if a significant difference was found with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Three important variables, cortical arousals (p < 0.05), autonomic activations (p < 0.01), and spindle duration (p < 0.01), had differences that were statistically significant between sleep at home or in the barracks, with sleep in the barracks being more disturbed. Clinical differences were also observed between the home and barrack conditions and all sleep results were more deleterious when compared to normative data. Conclusions: The data demonstrates that firefighters show poor sleep quality and heavily impacted sleep architecture. This may be due to the effects of rotating shifts and occupational stress on the sleep–wake cycle. These results, when compared to age-matched normative data, show clinical manifestations of disturbed sleep in the firefighter population.

Abstract:
In the article, on the basis of the discovered sites, new areas of the Roman garrison location are revealed, in the form of seven barracks (contubernia), which were added to the defensive wall and tower at the Lower city of Olbia Pontica. At the lateral quarter, which belonged to the Roman officer, there were found marble bases of the internal columns with the name of the centurion M. Emilius Severinus of the Legio I Italica. The architectural complex located to the south of the barracks in its layout resembles administrative buildings of the Roman camps like a principia – the officers’ house, which consisted of a number of rooms located along the perimeter around the courtyard: with a separate kitchen, a dining room, a central sanctuary room (aedes principiorum), where were stored legionary signs (signa militaria), altars, and statues of deities and emperors. This can be evidenced by the architectural details found during the excavations, terracotta in the shape of eagles and Roman soldiers, Roman weapons and equipment. A similar arrangement of barracks in Olbia is known on the citadel, under the Northern defensive wall. The problem of interpretation of the praetorium building in Olbia is also considered, some quarters of which could serve as Roman barracks. The construction of the barrack blocks and headquarters buildings can be attributed to the second half of the 2nd century AD – the time of the stationary Roman garrison appearance in Olbia.

Abstract:
From July through November 2002, the internship which I have been engaged in at Jackson Barracks Military Museum has afforded me opportunity to gain practical experience in both the curatorial and preparatory aspects of museum operations. Jackson Barracks Military Museum is part of a larger state agency, "The Military Directorate" and its governing board is appointed in accordance with state law. Jackson Barracks Military Museum is presently being restructured to acquire certification from the U.S. Army Center of Military History Museum Division. Katz in "Museum Trusteeship: The Fiduciary Ethic Applied" The Journal of Arts Management and Law (73) writes that the museum community has been compelled to develop codes of ethics and sound practices and procedures for their board members, and museum management. This effort will bring this State Museum more in line with the requirements of the American Association of Museums for certification. I was and am pleased to have had the opportunity to take part in this effort which required a complete tum around in how the organization approached its mission. I will detail areas of responsibility given to me, and my contributions to the ongoing effort to become the first National Guard agency to acquire certification.

DeYoung, Elizabeth Helen. "Girdwood Barracks : power, politics and planning in the post-ceasefire city." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2018. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3021323/.

Full text
Abstract:
In any society, contestation arises over the 'right' to space - how access to space is controlled and negotiated, who belongs and who is excluded. My research is primarily concerned with the policy and planning machinations of the post-ceasefire city, taking the former Girdwood Army Barracks in Belfast, Northern Ireland as its case study. It examines how power is exercised and how rhetoric is practiced and subverted through the processes of governance. The focal point of the analysis will be the nuanced relationships and dynamics within and between groups, and how these reflect upon the transformation of politics, society, and space in a city emerging from conflict. The regeneration of the former Girdwood Army Barracks is a microcosm of wider problems in Northern Ireland. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement promised a new future for a society previously mired in sectarianism and violence; the subsequent Northern Ireland Act enshrined its prescriptions into law. The vision for the 'new' Northern Ireland included a ceasefire leading to devolved consociational governance, which would then deliver social justice and the protection of vulnerable groups. Girdwood's regeneration was a test case for putting the rhetoric of the Agreement and the legislative framework of the Act into practice: promoting equality and democracy, sharedness and reconciliation, and a 'peace dividend' of prosperity in areas that saw the worst of the Troubles. The demilitarised Barracks site offered an opportunity for a regeneration project of international significance in one of the most deprived, divided, and conflict-afflicted parts of Northern Ireland. My research argues that such sentiments were rhetorical and camouflage the reality of a planning process that lacked shared visions; ignored equality and human rights legislation; and frustrated inter-community conflict amelioration. Girdwood is a site that has never before been studied in-depth, but which exemplifies the nature of ethnosectarian territorialism and zero-sum resource competition between groups estranged by conflict. However, it also highlights a developing social justice element which emerged as a dissenting voice to the sectarian status quo in Northern Ireland, attempting to hold politicians to the promises and prescriptions of the peace process. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that consociationalism has not delivered the promises of the Agreement, nor the rule of law enshrined in the subsequent Act. It highlights the chasm between rhetoric and reality, vision and practice evident throughout both the eleven-year Girdwood development process and in the concurrent workings of the Assembly. The uneasy dynamic of power-sharing in the post-ceasefire Assembly which produced Girdwood has come to a seemingly intractable end; the Assembly collapsed in January 2017, and over a year later at the time of writing, a compromise still has not been reached. My study concludes that as a test case, Girdwood shows that the consociational system is ultimately not fit for purpose, and influenced the eventual failure of government.

Abstract:
This thesis will present a zooarchaeological analysis of the faunal remains excavated from the Port Arthur Prisoner Barracks in 1977. Originally constructed in 1830 following the establishment of the Port Arthur Penal Settlement, the Prisoner Barracks were continually occupied throughout the convict period, spanning 1830 – 1877. This thesis will examine both the faunal remains and the historical record to examine the evolution of subsistence practices at Port Arthur and within the broader network of probation stations upon Tasman’s Peninsula.

Abdurrahman, Suraj A. "The housing of soldiers in military barracks, with particular reference to Nigeria." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26135.

Full text
Abstract:
The research traces the housing of soldiers in Military Barracks from the time of the Roman Army, and by examining the Contemporary Military Establishment, identifies the changes that have occurred. It notes the advancement in the technology of warfare which necessitates the recruitment of a higher calibre of men into the Military. The survey methodology establishes the use and nature of the questionnaire and the priority evaluation game which was developed to obtain the soldiers' housing priorities. The data collected by the survey from a sample of soldiers is analysed, in order to understand their attitudes towards existing Barrack housing and to identify their expectations in an ideal Barrack housing. The findings show a general dissatisfaction with the existing housing and a preference for the semi- detached house with private backyard. Furthermore, the result indicates that the individual's dissatisfaction with the existing housing is associated with his level of education. The implications resulting from the majority of soldiers now being married are discussed so far as the provision of satisfactory living conditions for troops and their families affect morale and loyalty.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports the results of a single site case study conducted in Barracks High School, a comprehensive High School in metropolitan Sydney. The focus of the study was the relationship between student participation and school context in Barracks High. Underpinning the study is the notion of 'meaningful' participation: that is, participation by students that has real meaning to them, to teachers, and for the real work of the school. This notion is explored in the review of related literature, and in the results of the study as they are presented in the thesis. The study involved persistent researcher engagement in school life, leading at times to forms of 'intervention research'.A highlight of the research was the identification and dissemination by the researcher of participant 'voices' within Barracks High as a means of drawing attention to participation issues in the school. The study found that contextual dimensions at Barracks High operated at a ratio of two to one against the achievement of meaningful forms of student participation. The thesis concludes by suggesting that complex problems require holistic solutions, and suggests a framework of principles and strategies for building meaningful participation in schools<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Taylor, David J. A. "The forts on Hadrian's Wall : a comparative analysis of the form and construction of some buildings." Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4555/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis undertakes a comparative analysis of some of the stone buildings within the forts of the completed concept of Hadrian's Wall. The buildings included are the principia, granaries, gates and barracks. Each building type has been measured and inspected on site, or the data obtained from archival or documentary sources. As a background to the study the forts are set in the context of the Wall, examining its structure, garrisons and taking an overview of the archaeological record, additionally general Roman building techniques are reviewed. The selected buildings within each fort are then discussed and compared with other buildings on the Wall, or on other military sites. In this way then- form, dimensional analysis, construction sequence and building techniques are considered and discussed. Common features and major differences are highlighted in the forts and the buildings, and comparisons drawn. Some tentative links are made as to the builders of the forts and the probable use of standard units of measure. Reconstructions of the buildings are put forward, taking into account the archaeological evidence and architectural considerations. Supporting information supplied in the appendices includes data relating to each fort as well as schedules of dimensions of the buildings, together with comparative tables. A catalogue of the decorated and moulded stonework sets out and discusses the stonework from the various buildings.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the site history of the Hyde Park Barracks since 1975 when the decision was made to restore the historical fabric of the building for use as a museum. Paramount to this enquiry is the understanding that historic buildings are always in a process of change, both physically and conceptually. This study will argue that a ‘metamorphosis of perspectives on the past’ at this site has been shaped by cultural, political and economic development over time and a quest of modern identity.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the alternative quarters the American colonists sought for the North American Establishment, describing how massive barracks arose in the four largest American cities and several smaller towns in 1756-58. Following a history of barracks since ancient times, it explains the effects that barracks had on urban locales, colonists, and soldiers, as well as what happened in places that did not have barracks. The conclusion of the French and Indian War brought Canada, Florida, and the backcountry into the British Empire, which raised new questions about quartering as few of these places had barracks. Although the removal of the British army from the American colonies emptied the urban barracks, events like the Paxton Boys raids of 1763-64 put control of the military infrastructure at odds with the military geography of the colonies.

Abstract This corrosion control study was based on, and closely followed, the AWWA Guidance Manual and AWWARF1 pipe loop protocol2. The primary objective of this study was to provide a corrosion control recommendation for the site to satisfy State of Maryland and EPA requirements to define and maintain optimal corrosion control treatment. A second objective was to identify technical and cost constraints that may affect the application of specific corrosion control treatments in finished water. Blended zinc potassium polyphosphate /Zinc orthophosphate showed lower corrosion rates and reduced lead concentrations in finished water for the majority of days studied in plant pipe loop models and remote location (barracks) pipe loop models. Blended potassium monophosphate/potassium tripolyphosphate followed a close second in overall efficacy. The pH adjusted and control strategies exhibited little demonstrated corrosion control benefit. Recommendations based on this study included: (1) addition of blended zinc potassium polyphosphate/zinc orthophosphate with a residual concentration between 2.0 and 4.5 mg/L, (2) installation of a chemical feed to buffer well water with sodium bicarbonate to stabilize alkalinity when 100% well water is used, and (3) investigation of lime addition to raw well water to control buffer capacity in the combined raw well water/surface water.

Abstract:
Abstract Large pressurized steel hot water storage tanks must be protected from internal corrosion, as they have no protective coatings on the water-side. Six pressurized steel hot water storage tanks at an Army installation were chosen for implementation with impressed current cathodic protection systems using ceramic anodes. The tanks, ranging from 5,000 to 13,300 liters (1,300 to 3,500 gal.) in size, are part of a closed loop system that supplies hot water 60°C (140°F) to soldier’s barracks for bathing and to the adjoining mess halls for washing dishes. The tanks will be taken off-line, drained, and holes will be bored in the steel walls to install mixed metal oxide ceramic coated titanium rod anodes connected to a local rectifier and control system. Ceramic anodes have potential to extend the service life of the water storage tank, many times that of the sacrificial anodes, even in corrosive waters. The design of the system took into account the water chemistry and current density required to mitigate corrosion at a maximum continuous operating temperature of up to 60°C (140°F) in accordance with NACE Standards RP0388-2001 and RP0169-96 for cathodic protection. The benefits of installation of the CP systems are expected to be service life extension of the hot water storage tanks, and reduction in the potential of the tanks to leak and damage other electrical/mechanical equipment. Also, these tanks are located in areas where they would be difficult and costly to remove and replace without breaking through a wall in the mechanical room.
