Abstract:
During high rates of fire, the bore of the firearm barrel is exposed to high temperatures. This exposure induces structural changes in the barrel material, which is especially significant for the substrate of the galvanic chrome plating. The alloy steel grades used currently for firearm barrels, when exposed to heating above the ferrite stability limits, develop a phase transition with a discrete negative change in the material volume, which results in typical crazing in the bore. This effect is destructive to the galvanic chrome plating, leading to a loss of adhesion, which reduces the ballis

Abstract Over the last few years the protective coatings industry has seen an increased demand for high performance waterborne coatings in the field of corrosion protection. Market drivers such as “Sustainability”, “Greenability”, and ongoing regulatory and environmental concerns continue to force coatings producers to look for other viable options to replace conventional solvent borne technologies. By their very nature waterborne systems require elaborate additive packages so that they can achieve acceptable levels of performance when compared to traditional technologies. On one hand, wetting

Abstract Starting in the 1940’s, solution vinyl resin coatings were used extensively to protect steel structures in fluctuating immersion service from corrosion. However, these systems fell out of favor when more restrictive volatile organic compounds regulations were implemented in the 1990’s. Since then, traditional epoxy systems have become a workhorse in the protective coatings industry. Unfortunately, these materials tend to degrade in sunlight, and experience has revealed their service life to be suboptimal compared to legacy coatings systems such as vinyls. Consequently, the Bureau of R

Extended Abstract Biomedical metallic materials can be harmful to the human body in the long term due to the release and accumulation of metallic particles resulting from the degradation and corrosion of the material, a consequence of the wear suffered by the implant. Therefore, biodegradable materials have been studied that reduce the risk to health and the need for a second surgical intervention to remove the implant when the tissue is regenerated. Magnesium alloys are possible candidates as degradable biomaterials for temporary implants in various specialties such as traumatology, cardiolog

Efforts to effectively determine the life of a cannon barrel have now been extended to developing a conceptual design for a nondestructive testing system to evaluate the condition of gun barrels in the field. This paper describes the development of an autonomous vehicle capable of traveling the length of a large caliber cannon barrel to scan the interior surface for cracks and flaws that would indicate that the barrel needs to be decommissioned. This robotic vehicle carries a bore scope to provide visual inspection and an ultrasonic transducer (UT) with which to examine the barrel. The UT data

In order to ensure rifle barrels have the features of high strength, durability, and light weight, the strength analysis of the barrels under hot temperatures and pressures is very important in the design. A finite element model incorporating the plastic deformation of a typical 0.50 caliber rifle barrel is constructed to determine the stresses caused by the mechanical loads and plastic deformation. According to the simulation results, the finite element analysis is proved to be a power analysis tool for future failure analysis of firearm barrels. The method provides a power tool for analysis

Abstract:
This paper shows that poor health at birth can act as a barrier to upward economic mobility, reinforcing inequality across generations. Using linked administrative data for two Canadian birth cohorts, we find that mothers born with low birth weight (LBW) are significantly more likely to have LBW children. Sibling comparisons reveal that LBW reduces the probability of surpassing parental income rank by 4 percent. We show that ongoing childhood health shocks partly—but not fully—explain this effect, suggesting both direct and indirect pathways. Our findings highlight how policies targeting prena

The emergence of food-borne illness outbreaks linked to the contamination of fruits and vegetables is a great concern in industrialized countries. The current lack of control measures and effective sanitization methods prompt the need for new strategies to reduce contamination of produce. Our ability to assess the risk associated with produce contamination and to devise innovative control strategies depends on the identification of critical determinants that affect the growth and the persistence of human pathogens on plants.
