Abstract:
Controversial issues and text-internal correctives in <i>Skilpoppe</i> by Barrie Hough This article focuses on the binary relations between controversial issues and text internal correctives by making use of examples from “Skilpoppe” (Babushka dolls) (2002) by Barrie Hough. The article starts with a discussion of controversial issues, including the four main categories, identified as violence, sexuality, politics and religion and continues briefly to the censorship as enacted before the Films and Publications Act, No. 65 of 1996 was passed. Thereafter the text-internal corrective, which is sometimes found to be an answer to controversial issues present in youth literature, is discussed and the binary relations between literary controversy and text-internal correctives are highlighted. The theory developed is then used in the analysis of controversial issues in “Skilpoppe”.

Abstract:
Whether zinc (Zn2+) regulates barrier functions by modulating tight-junction (TJ) proteins when pathogens such as Shigella alter epithelial permeability is still unresolved. We investigated the potential benefits of Zn2+ in restoring impaired barrier function in vivo in Shigella-infected mouse tissue and in vitro in T84 cell monolayers. Basolateral Shigella infection triggered a time-dependent decrease in transepithelial resistance followed by an increase in paracellular permeability of FITC-labeled dextran and altered ion selectivity. This led to ion and water loss into the intestinal lumen. Immunofluorescence studies revealed redistribution of claudin-2 and -4 to an intracellular location and accumulation of these proteins in the cytoplasm following infection. Zn2+ ameliorated this perturbed barrier by redistribution of claudin-2 and -4 back to the plasma membrane and by modulating the phosphorylation state of TJ proteins t hough extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 dependency. Zn2+ prevents elevation of IL-6 and IL-8. Mice challenged with Shigella showed that oral Zn2+supplementation diminished diverse pathophysiological symptoms of shigellosis. Claudin-2 and -4 were susceptible to Shigella infection, resulting in altered barrier function and increased levels of IL-6 and IL-8. Zn2+ supplementation ameliorated this barrier dysfunction, and the inflammatory response involving ERK-mediated change of phosphorylation status for claudin-2 and -4. Thus, Zn2+ may have potential therapeutic value in inflammatory diarrhea and shigellosis. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our study addresses whether Zn2+ could be an alternative strategy to reduce Shigella-induced inflammatory response and epithelial barrier dysfunction. We have defined a mechanism in terms of intracellular signaling pathways and tight-junction protein expression by Zn2+. Claudin-2 and -4 are susceptible to Shigella infection, whereas in the presence of Zn2+ they are resistant to infection-related barrier dysfunction involving ERK-mediated change of phosphorylation status of claudins.

Abstract:
Aviation bearing assembled detection is the final barrier to quality and safety. Therefore, an accurate detection method of aviation bearing that is based on local characteristics is designed to solve the detection problem of mis-assembly and miss-assembly of balls in aviation bearing assembled. When considering the spatial limitation of aviation bearing assembled image acquisition, the dynamic distribution of balls and the interference of lubricating grease on the surface, a dynamic local ball segmentation model that is based on U-Net network with symmetrical structure is designed to achieve the accurate segmentation of the local ball region of aviation bearing. Subsequently, an incomplete circle fitting algorithm is designed based on the segmented local ball image and Hough transform principle. These two algorithms make the measurement error of aviation bearing ball size less than 100 μm. Using bearings validates the algorithm. The results show that the accuracy of dynamic local ball segmentation model that is based on U-Net network with symmetrical structure is over 99%. At the same time, on the basis of accurate segmentation in aviation bearing local ball, the designed Hough circle algorithm is used for circle detection. The experimental results show that the false detection rate of mis-assembly and miss-assembly of balls is less than 3%. Further, the goal of zero-missed detection of mis-assembly and miss-assembly of balls in aviation bearing is achieved. The accurate segmentation of aviation bearing local ball and the effective identification of mis-assembly and miss-assembly of balls are realized. This method can provide a theory for the improvement of mis-assembly and miss-assembly of balls detection in aviation bearing. Furthermore, it has high application value.

Abstract:
There are certain issues - such as violence, sexuality, politics and religion - which are problematic but have to be dealt with in society. In this dissertation types of controversial issues present in recent Afrikaans youth literature, the portrayal of those issues, and the ways in which solutions are offered for these issues are investigated. The argument follows from the assumption that the literature which the adolescent reads, has a directive value. Quite often the reader will choose to read material about a certain situation with which the reader is also faced in real life. It may be easy for the reader to identify with a character in similar circumstances or facing the same dilemma. Through the actions of the character, the reader can then explore certain avenues or possibilities which have the potential to be helpful in the solution of the problem or issue. For this dissertation research was done about certain controversial issues and related aspects in literature in general, which are then applied to three youth novels: Skilpoppe (1998) by Barrie Hough, Daar's vis in die punch (2002) by Jackie Nagtegaal and Nie vir kinders nie (2005) by Francois Bloemhof. These three texts were chosen because all three of them have generated public discussion, specifically in the media, about the presence of controversial issues. The results indicate the portrayal of the controversial issues to be unbiased and from a non-judgemental authoring perspective. The presence of the text internal corrective, which refers to the portrayal of a certain issue thereby giving it an outcome (positive or negative) or an alternative, is noticeable and is discussed in this dissertation.<br>Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores controversial themes in the youth literature of Barrie Hough. The novels under discussion are My kat word herfs (1986), Droomwa (1990), Vlerkdans (1992) and Skilpoppe (1998). My kat word herfs was translated as My cat turns Autumn, Droomwa as Dream Chariot and Vlerkdans as In full Flight. Afrikaans youth novels historically centered around naive themes such as the idyllic life on the farm or at boarding school. However, young people found it increasingly difficult to identify with these naive storylines and during the nineteen eighties and nineties the Afrikaans youth novel experienced a renewal. Barrie Hough was one of the pioneers, writing about controversial issues like aids, homosexuality, teenage sex, suicide, drug abuse, divorce and single parenthood. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the liberation of Afrikaans youth literature and the role that controversial themes play in this regard. These themes enable the reader to identify with the story and serve as an allurement to draw the reader into the world of the text. Furthermore, the writer is given the opportunity to experience a sense of liberation while he narratively confronts events of his past. This liberation process allows the writer to deal and come to terms with his own past. At the end of each novel both the reader and writer go through a process of purification and liberation, facilitated by the therapeutic process of writing or reading a story.<br>Dr. M.P. Beukes

Abstract:
In this dissertation it is indicated that gender is a social construct, while sex is biologically determined. The concept of gender refers to that which is understood within a certain society to define masculinity and femininity, the power struggle between the two sexes, as well as the social limitations which are placed on people's behaviour as a result of gender. Children's and young adult's literature exert a great influence on the youth's idea of gender roles. The social and cultural history of South African society is used in this study to explore stereotypical gender roles in Afrikaans youth literature. The role of a patriarchal society, homosexuality, and changing perceptions of gender roles are investigated. It is indicated that in both English and Afrikaans children's and young adult's literature the portrayal of gender roles is often unrealistic, stereotypical, and contains sexist language. Two novels namely, Gooi horn in die slool (1971) and Skilpoppe (1998), are analysed using the following categories: male or female author, representation of gender roles, and use of sexist language. The teaching implications of the findings for the second language learner are then articulated. - University of Natal, Durban, 2001.
