Abstract:
Two major Open Science innovations, Open Access and research data sharing, have been studied in detail in this thesis. A large-scale survey and personal interviews are used to gain detailed insights from a range of disciplines. In addition, a case study in the High Energy Physics (HEP) community was used to study the results in practice. The results show that a rather positive attitude towards both, Open Access and research data sharing is not reflected in the researchers’ practices. Disciplinary differences prevail and relate to the different publishing cultures and research workflows. The results indicate that quality and prestige of research output are perceived as very important in determining a researcher’s reputation. Researchers prefer community-approved publication outlets. They hesitate to explore new innovations, such as data sharing, for which only few established workflows exist in digital scholarly communication. Interviewees highlight the significance of a (missing) link between such approaches on the one hand and the current incentive system and the research assessment schemes on the other. The results indicate that barriers can be overcome. In the case study, a strong collaboration with the community facilitated enhanced feedback loops to develop tailored and targeted services for Open Science. Researchers in the case study were successfully engaged in new innovative workflows: a crowdsourcing tool and data sharing in a digital library. The results highlight that opportunities of Open Science are not yet explored widely. But with targeted support, it is possible to build on best practices and develop strategies that engage communities in new innovations. The results furthermore demand new strategies to establish links from Open Science services to the academic incentive system. It is needed to revisit the current research assessment scheme in regard to potential support mechanisms for Open Science.

Abstract:
This is an era of globalization due to which the world has become a Global Village and organizations are transforming into multicultural firms while increasingly building diverse teams. However, due to the organizations’ tendency towards becoming international, individuals worldwide travel and migrate from one society to another. This cross-culturalism is fabricating challenges for the countries of higher immigrant rates because individuals bring the complex nature of mixed cultures with them. The context of cross-culturalism is based on various different elements e.g. cultural specific values, norms, behaviors, lifestyles, ethics and beliefs which promote diversity in multicultural organizations. Thus the diversity of people creates intercultural barriers for managers/leaders to manage multicultural teams as well as challenges have increased for employees/followers who work in those teams. However, it has become crucial for both leaders and followers to learn cultural competencies so that they can manage cultural barriers and perform effectively as well as efficiently in multicultural teams.Due to the rising demand to learn intercultural competencies, this research was initiated to help future leaders and followers to better understand and manage ICC barriers. This study is an addition to existing research and will guide multicultural organizations and their participants (leaders & followers). However two questions were developed around which this study has been executed 1) How do participants from High context and Low context cultures experience intercultural communication barriers while working in multicultural settings? and 2) How can intercultural communication barriers/challenges effectively be managed among participants? In order to answer these questions, interviews on students were conducted at four universities of Sweden for the purpose of collecting empirical data which later on analyzed with the existing literature relevant to ICC.The findings of this study conclude that both High-context (HC) cultures and Low-context (LC) cultures have differences among each other which create barriers/challenges for the individuals working in multicultural settings. The results represent that when an individual from HC moves to LC, he/she comes across challenges or even if an HC moves to HC he/she faces some sort of challenges in any way possible too and, same goes for LC. The empirical data after analysis with existing literature proved that every culture whether it’s LC or HC wants to interact with HC or LC, it always creates challenges and conflicts. But at the same time there are some possible steps which can be taken to manage these barriers e.g. observation of cultures, active listening, comparison with own culture, have a dialogue around the problem as well as understanding of others’ behaviors and giving them space.

Abstract:
This study examines cultural issues surrounding family cancer communication in Appalachia, providing insight into participants’ communication choices regarding their illness within their families. Stories of 29 female Appalachian cancer survivors from Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia were collected via a mixed methods approach in either a day-long story circle (N=26) or an in-depth interview (N=3). Qualitative content analysis was used to identify unique barriers to family cancer communication in Appalachia. Two barriers emerged: 1) the health of other family members and 2) cancer in a “taboo” area. These findings suggest that Appalachian female cancer survivors struggle with similar issues as survivors outside of the region regarding family cancer communication. However, there appear to be additional barriers to family cancer communication for Appalachian women that may be a result of cultural norms of the region.

Machaczek, Katarzyna Karolina. "Barriers to effective communication between doctors at shift handover." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2014. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20750/.

Full text
Abstract:
Shift handover is a process during which doctors can exchange information, authority and primary responsibility for patient care. The level of handover standardisation may vary across departments and hospitals, and handover may be affected by the context in which it occurs. If during handover communication doctors do not transfer information pertinent to a patient's care delivery, it may lead to unintended negative consequences. An explanatory, mixed-methods study, using the principles of critical realism was conducted to investigate whether or not similar barriers to effective shift handover communication between doctors identified in hospitals around the world are identified by doctors working in hospitals in the Czech Republic and to develop hypotheses regarding how various individual performance-, work environment- and system-related factors may collectively contribute to ineffective shift handover communication between doctors. In accordance with the principles of critical realism the study included theory-testing phases: (i) a critical review of literature; (ii) a cross-sectional questionnaire survey; and (iii) semi-structured interviews with doctors. The results of the study show that doctors working in hospitals in the Czech Republic identify similar barriers to effective shift handover communication between doctors identified in hospitals around the world. However, handover between the Czech Republic doctors has its own specific characteristics. The inadequacies of the social, systemic and environmental features that make up different contexts in which handover is conducted collectively contribute to ineffective shift handover communication. For example, a systemic feature (e.g. the absence of training), may lead to specific doctors' beliefs (e.g. handover is meaningless), which in turn trigger certainbehaviours (e.g. doctors go home without communicating either verbally or in writing the work carried out during the previous shift), that tend towards a particular kind of outcome (e.g. the absence of handover). Consequently, the division of barriers to handover into one-dimensional categories such as 'the individual performance', 'the system' or 'the social environment', has emerged as superficial as it does not adequately reflect the reality of the context and process of handover communication. Any interventions and programmes, which aim to enhance communication between doctors at shift handover, may need therefore to address the multidimensional nature of handover communication.

Arachikavitz, Nicole. "Barriers to Communication in Healthcare: Perceptions of the Rural Elderly." TopSCHOLAR®, 2003. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/578.

Full text
Abstract:
There is presently a lack of research on the types of communication barriers faced by the rural elderly when accessing health care. Furthermore, much of the research on the rural elderly is old and outdated. Thus, this thesis research sought to identify and explore communication barriers faced by the rural elderly when accessing healthcare. Specifically, the research in this thesis seeks to answer the following research questions: What types of communication barriers do rural elderly face when seeking health care? More specifically, what sorts of patient-provider communication barriers will the rural elderly of South Central Kentucky identify? An interview guide was developed to explore the perceived communication barriers encountered when accessing healthcare. The data were collected from subjects, who must have been at least 65 years of age and must have visited a senior center in the Barren River Area Development District on the date of interviews (n=59). The data was analyzed using frequencies and central tendencies with SPSS. The study satisfied the purpose of expanding and updating what is known about the communication barriers faced by the rural elderly when accessing health care. The study also, demonstrates that further research is needed on this topic to update the current knowledge even more so.

Abstract:

This thesis combines theories from cross-cultural psychology with literature on group faultlines to understand cultural barriers to communication and cooperation experienced in multinational emergency management teams. The aim is to investigate whether the faultline concept is a viable theoretical vocabulary for addressing cultural differences in communication and cooperation (in the domain of emergency management). Culture is defined as a relatively organized system of shared meanings which influences people’s cognition, values, behaviors, and so on. Group faultlines are hypothetical dividing lines that may split a team into homogeneous subgroups based on demographic characteristics. Three papers are included in the thesis, all of which investigate various aspects of group behavior in relation to emergency management. Results suggest that faultlines can be formed not only by demographic characteristics, but also by culturally-driven behavior. The results presented in the papers and in this thesis are meant to supply emergency management personnel with general knowledge of cultural differences and ideas for future ‘cultural awareness’ training. The thesis contributes to the scientific community by taking cross-cultural research into the applied domain so that its findings can be made relevant to people in multinational organizations.

Abstract:
This study focuses on exploring barriers to intercultural communication among managers atIKEA Japan. It investigates what challenges MNC subsidiary managers experience whilecommunicating and interacting with people from different cultures. For this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the respondents were ofSwedish and Japanese nationality holding management positions at IKEA Japan. The research concluded that the respondents experienced the barriers differently, some feltstressed over uncertainty while others felt excited. A common theme across all the barriers waslanguage difficulties. Language differences were the most prominent stumbling block.Nonverbal communication was of greater importance to the respondent that does not speakJapanese well and is often used as a tool to aid verbal communication. The respondents did not see stereotyping and ethnocentrism as a clear hindrance to interculturalcommunication. However, from their responses, it is evident that there are some issues. TheJapanese tend to bunch all Westerners together and assume they are unable to speak Japaneseand understand Japanese customs. The Japanese have a strong sense of pride in their cultureand a strong preference for speaking Japanese. The Swedish managers may even lose therespect of Japanese co-workers if they do not speak Japanese perfectly.

Abstract:
In today’s rapidly changing environment, organizational change is more important than ever before for companies to remain competitive. Additionally, there is an increasing need that change leadership theory needs a new perspective which emphasizes the need to further investigate the area. Communication is a part of change leadership theory. Although leadership communication is a thoroughly researched theoretical field, the dynamics of the communication process is limited and needs to be further investigated. This thesis has therefore focused on leadership communication during organizational change. By designing a dynamic communication model, this study aims to develop an increased understanding of communication barriers in companies during organizational change. This thesis is based on a case study at AstraZeneca. Data in this study have been retrieved through a survey and interviews conducted at the company. The communication process has been identified to consists of three phases; Explaining the Change, Getting Others Along, and Anchoring the Change. Based on these three phases, three barriers to leadership communication during organizational change have been identified; Lack of Understanding, Lack of Requesting, and Lack of Time. By understanding these barriers and comparing them to existing literature, a dynamic communication model has been proposed. This model consists of the theoretical anchored communication phases; Sender, Message, Receiver, and Feedback together with the three identified communication barriers; Lack of Understanding, Lack of Requesting, and Lack of Time. This model is considered as a foundation for future studies intended to develop a dynamic communication model suitable for organizational change. The model can also be viewed as a tool for managers in organizations characterized by change who want to enhance their communicating ability and overcome these communication barriers.

LaLande, Aristotle C. "The Complexity of Virtual Team Communications| The Lived Experiences of Project Leaders Managing Virtual Environments and Communication Barriers." Thesis, Capella University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10935768.

Full text
Abstract:

This research study examined the general business problem that ineffective communications caused project management outcomes that lead to increased business costs. The specific business problem was complexity experienced by virtual teams, due to the lack of physicality, contributed to environmental barriers and ineffective communications. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to capture the lived experiences of project leaders who managed the complexity associated with virtual communication environmental barriers. The research question was: What are the lived experiences and informed perceptions of project leaders who managed the complexity associated with virtual communication environmental barriers? The conceptual framework guiding this inquiry was comprised of complexity theory’s complex adaptive systems framework to include project leadership, team dynamics, virtual communication environments, communication method selection, and the management organization as the integrating components that influenced complexity. Data was gathered through telephone interviews conducted with 14 certified project management professionals sourced from LinkedIn, all of whom experienced project complexity and communication challenges within the virtual environment. The resulting data transcripts were analyzed using NVivo 11. The research question was answered through the findings that revealed a central theme and sub-themes of managing complexity due to virtual environments and communication barriers. The research findings indicated sub-themes of five virtual environments experienced by the research participants, created by the type of communication tools’ attributes that were experienced. The virtual environments were established from the types of communication links by using specific tools, and not defined as the physical environments based on locations of the senders and receivers. Secondly, the research findings indicated sub-themes of internal environmental barriers that were created inside of the project teams by people, language, culture, training, and leadership. Thirdly, the research findings indicated sub-themes of external environmental barriers that were created outside of the project teams by executive leadership, organizational structure, and customer relationship. Fourth, the research findings indicated sub-themes of task and project outcomes included project failure, project success, and project recovery. The results of this study contributed to the business practice through the findings that indicated how the participants managed communication environments through implementing processes, leadership escalations, communication tool selection, reduced feedback delays of communication, and built relationships among the team members that were central to managing the complexity in virtual teams. In addition, this study contributed to research by providing a holistic description of the virtual environments, identification of communication environmental barriers, and consolidated understandings from other studies.

Chase, Robert. "Microcontroller based handheld acoustic communication & power delivery through metallic barriers." Thesis, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1547915.

Full text
Abstract:

The ability to reliably transmit data through metallic barriers without intrusive procedures like hole drilling is useful, and sometimes necessary, for the safety of personal and equipment in hazardous conditions. Examples include submarine hulls, space vehicles, and nuclear reactors. Traditional means of communication via conductive wires compromise the integrity of the metal vessels while traditional wireless communications solutions like WiFi are limited by Faraday shielding imposed by metallic barriers. Acoustic communication solutions to this problem have been explored over the past 15 years but have not been widely deployed. The goal of this work was to develop a hand-held, battery operated system that is capable of wirelessly powering and communicating with electronics through a curved metallic barrier. Three systems were implemented using Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), Microcontroller Units (MCUs),or a combination of the two. An electronic system was developed on one side of the metallic barrier to excite vibrations at 1.25 MHz in a piezoelectric transducer attached to the barrier. Data was transmitted through the wall in both directions in half-duplex mode by amplitude modulating this carrier signal with Manchester encoded data. Energy from the carrier wave was harvested on the other side of the wall to power electronic systems. Successful acoustic communication at 10 kbps between MCUs separated by a metallic barrier was achieved, where one system was powered completely by the acoustic signal applied through the barrier.

Stoffle, Richard W., and Jessica Minnis. "Resilience at Risk: Epistemological and Social Construction Barriers to Risk Communication." Journal of Risk Research, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/292434.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is about the persistent failure of social scientists to bring into the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process socially constructed environmental concerns held by potentially impacted communities. The failure to communicate perceived risks results from a two-communities divide based on both epistemological differences and obfuscation due to vernacular communication. The analysis provides robust modeling variables that can bridge this social-environmental divide. The case involves data collected from members of traditional communities regarding their perceptions of the potential impacts of proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The study is situated in the Bahamas where the government has approved setting aside 30 No-take MPAs to protect their sea. This analysis is based on 572 interviews conducted during eight field trips with members of six traditional settlements in the Exuma Islands and Cays in the central Bahamas. Confidence in the findings is high because the sample involves 34% of the census population of these settlements and the findings have repeatedly been returned for review and approval by the members of these settlements.

Abstract:
This study examines communication about global warming with an emphasis on encouraging a change in a viewers behavior, and how this can be practically visualised on websites. The study first gathers research from the fields of climate change communication, marketing and psychology, then a survey is sent out and an overview of websites about global warming is made. The findings from all this is then applied to a Hi-fi prototype of a website. The study aims to answer the question: How could visualized messages and information about global warming encourage change in a viewer’s behavior? User tests of the finished prototype gave mixed results. The results suggest that the site succeeded in creating a positive tone and emotional impact, but were not as successful at encouraging change and raising perceived self-efficacy. It may have been successful at encouraging hopefulness, and informing, but it is a bit unclear due to contradicting results from quantitative personal ratings and qualitative interview answers.

Abstract:
Background: In Namibia there are a lot of different native languages even if the official language is English. Since communication is an important tool for nurses and studies about communication across language barriers mostly is done in western countries, there is need for more knowledge regarding the nurse's experience with language barriers in multilingual and multicultural context, like Namibia. Aim: To describe the experiences of Namibian nurses caring for patients who speak another native language. Method: Qualitative interviews were held with four nurses and one student nurse at Katutura State hospital in Windhoek, Namibia. Results: Two themes with subthemes were identified in the results. The first theme, Establishing the patient-nurse relationship, describes the importance of trust for communication and what the interviewees found important when creating a bond with the patient. The other theme, Establishing the communication, describes the importance of interpretation and how they tackled the language barrier. Conclusion: When meeting a patient with another native language it is of great importance to establish trust with the patient and that interpreters are used. The use of sublingual nurses, who found interpreting to be a natural part of their work, was beneficial.

Background: Several countries in the world have developed into multicultural societies. This means new challenges for nurses in care because they will encounter patients who do not speak the same language as the nurse or share the same culture. This can lead to language barriers and cultural clashes that nurses must be able to overcome.Aim: The aim of this study was that through a literature review draw attention to nurses' experiences of meeting patients who don’t speak the same language as the nurses of the the same cultural beliefs, and the risks and barriers that these factors may cause in a care situation.Method: A literature study that is based on ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach that were analysed and reviewed. Themes were then identified. Results: Language barriers, communication difficulties, cultural differences, lack of knowledge of interpreter services and culture were identified as challenges that could affect the nurse's work negatively. Conclusion: nurses are in need of more education and knowledge about how to proceed in the care of patients who do not speak the same language or share the same culture as the nurses. The nurses should provide health care in a professional manner regardless of the patient's background or his ability to communicate.

Fields, Ashley Renee. "Examining Barriers with Implementing Augmentative and Alternative Communication in a Midwest School." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/197.

Abstract:
Many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in a Midwest urban public school system have experienced barriers that prohibit the effective use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The result has left some students with speech language impairments (SLI) without the communication skills for meaningful relationships and success in and out of school. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to determine the perceived barriers of 8 local school SLPs regarding the successful implementation of AAC and their suggestions for addressing the problem. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with the SLPs. Data collection and analysis were grounded by Ely's conditions of change theory to better understand what conditions were not being met for implementing AAC. The findings suggested that SLPs and teachers lacked the needed knowledge, experience, and time to properly implement AAC. The participants also indicated the need for more participation and commitment from their colleagues, school leaders, and the students' family members, which would also require additional training and collaborative planning time. The recommendations are that school administrators provide additional training and time for SLPs, their colleagues, and students' family members to learn how to properly help students with SLI use AAC in the classroom. The results of this study could help students with SLI by increasing the use of AAC in the school setting, home, and community. This could increase learning opportunities, student achievement, and relationships for students using AAC.

Abstract:
Purpose: To investigate nurses' experiences of how communication influence the nursepatient relationship, care and nursing with a patient whose languageisn’t handled by the nurse. Method: A descriptive interview study was performed on seven nurses in the surgical care units on a university hospital to describe nursesexperiences to answer the purpose of the study in detail. The material was analyzed deductively according to Graneheim&Lundmans qualitative content analysis (2004). Results: Respondents urged that communication difficulties due to language differences often lead to problems after the first meeting with the patient, as information on health care conducted, the performance of nursing interventions and patient the opportunity to participate in their own care. Conclusion: Nurses experienced that care about the patientsthey do not share the language with to be negatively affected, patient participation and autonomy was violated and that a more generous routine with interpreters is needed. There is however, that a creative approach affects the ability to communicate positively.

Abstract:
This research project aims to explore the perceptions of professional service needs from county social workers and parents seeking reunification at Walden Family Services in San Bernardino. This research study gathers the professional perspective and personal opinions of social workers that work closely with parents who are attempting to reunify with their children and the perspective of parents going through the process of attempting to reunify. This research project explores the positive and negative themes that were found from the feedback given from social workers and parents. The following study provides important insight into areas that can be improved from social workers and parents working together. The findings can help social workers understand the perspectives of parents going through the reunification process and provide insight into the barriers that might be hindering them from being successful. The findings can be of assistance to social workers working with parents in the social welfare system as they may assist in prioritizing attention to drop-out rates of services, poverty, social work expectation towards parents and the quality of social workers in general. Vise-versa, these findings can be a help to parents understand the viewpoints of social workers and their expectations social workers have on them. Ultimately, the research aims to provide insights on barriers that are impeding social workers and parents from working together effectively and working as a team. The following study is an exploratory research project that explores the discrepancies in perspectives from these two different groups. This qualitative study utilizes face to face interviews with open-ended questions as the tool to collect data from participants. The two central themes that emerged during the study were the emphasis both groups placed on the importance of communication and recognition of systemic barriers that prevent parents and social workers to be successful. Based on the qualitative responses of the eight participants in this study, the researcher has concluded that there is a discrepancy between perception of professional service needs from social workers and parents.

Abstract: The Web and its underlying technologies enable interactions among people that were unimaginable a few years ago. An important type of purposeful interaction is collaboration. Mediated by the Web, people from different social and cultural backgrounds, with different needs, preferences and capabilities can collaborate with each other. Collaboration often takes place in heterogeneous contexts that are not only defined by the actual situations of the collaboration partners, but also by individual and collective past experiences. The Web as a medium has an impact on collaboration and facilitates or enables certain aspects of collaboration while making others more difficult. In this PhD thesis we investigate Interaction Design related questions about web-mediated collaboration under a Pragmatic Web perspective. Our prime objective is to understand semiotic barriers to web-mediated collaboration and propose an approach to Interaction Design that reduces these barriers. Semiotic barriers are barriers related to communication, mediation and representation. These barriers emerge during web-based collaboration since many mechanisms of interpersonal face-to-face communication are not available. Depending on the context, semiotic barriers often have a negative impact on collaboration, but in some cases they might also have positive effects. The approach to Interaction Design proposed in this PhD thesis is rooted in the Pragmatic Web and uses Organizational Semiotics and Activity Theory as its theoretical and methodological frames of reference. The theoretic investigations were practically grounded in real world practices by participating in a research project in the domain of inclusive education. We materialized the proposed approach in the design of a prototype and the implementation of the corresponding tool that supports a practice of inclusive education professionals. Furthermore we proposed and applied a pragmatics-driven evaluation method in a longitudinal case study. Prototype design, tool implementation, and the conducted evaluation provided evidence that the proposed approach to pragmatics-driven Interaction Design can reduce semiotic barriers and thus promote web-mediated collaboration

Taylor, Shena Parthab. "An inclusive design perspective on communication barriers in healthcare for ethnic minority consumers." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2012. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12282.

Abstract:
This thesis contributes original knowledge through an inclusive design approach to lowering language and communication barriers in healthcare and suggests shifting the discussion from culture to context to lower intra-cultural hindrances towards learning English amongst some ethnic minorities. It offers an adaptable, scalable concept for gathering data on ethnic minorities (considering both different generations and religions) and employs a framework based analysis in design. Over the course of three studies grounded on theoretical insights from literature, primary research lead to the development and testing of innovative aids for communication, including educative and motivational elements. This research began by seeking to understand ethnic minority consumers (EMCs) perceptions of any barriers hindering their take-up of products or services in the UK, and their preferences. This is particularly significant as the UK s EMC population is predicted to double by 2051 and to diversify further, presenting challenges for social cohesion and planning future community goals. EMCs also represent a significant market for service and product providers. The research focussed on EMCs from the Indian Subcontinent based on religions and generations. It highlighted that first generation females lacking English and/or literacy (across religions and age groups) faced problems with services and issues around empowerment . The importance of improved access to healthcare was a strong theme. On investigating NHS staffs perceptions, five barriers were identified (Language barriers; Low-literacy; a Lack of understanding; Attitudes, gender and health beliefs; and Information retention) and that a female subgroup was particularly affected. This study sets out staffs perceptions of the aids currently employed and suggestions of what would help. It identified a (currently) low use of visual communication aids in adult-patient care and that pharmacist-patient communication in pharmacies was low. Ideally, staff would like patients to learn English and to use more low-cost visual communication aids. These findings lead to the development of innovative visual communication aids through inclusive and user-centred approaches and participatory design and brainstorming methods. This enabled the development of aids by considering the needs of NHS staff, EMCs lacking English and/or literacy and indigenous elderly people to promote better patient-staff communication including a take-away educational element for learning English at home.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the acculturation experiences of long-term Western residents in Japan using a broad intercultural studies approach. First, the historical context of Westerners coming to Japan is discussed. Next, literature from the field of intercultural studies is considered. This literature is used to provide a framework for analyzing Western sojourners’ acculturation experiences in Japan, as well as for choosing the research methods for conducting a qualitative analysis. The research involved interviewing 12 expatriates from English-speaking countries who have been in Japan for at least 10 years. Their acculturation experiences were analyzed, with a particular focus on finding hidden barriers to acculturation. The study concludes that numerous barriers to acculturation do exist. Commonly observable barriers included lack of employment security for some sojourners, and a poor fit between an individual’s personality and the host culture. These issues are applicable to anyone adapting to life in a different culture. However, this research also exposed a number of hidden barriers arguably unique to the Western sojourner’s acculturation experience in Japan. These barriers include the challenge of developing satisfying relationships with Japanese, due primarily to different expectations for psychological closeness and self-disclosure in Japan and the West. Another is the social effect of Othering, the centuries-old process where Japanese society divides things into those which are Japanese and those which are not, and the consequent empathy deficit that Japanese experience toward outsiders. The thesis concludes by offering recommendations for how long-term Western residents in Japan can improve their adaptation and acculturation experience. These include the obvious advantages of learning the Japanese language, and the less obvious benefits of learning and practicing mindful intercultural communication.

Background: Effective communication is vital to establish a patient-nurse relation and in order for the nurse to deliver good nursing care. Mistakes and errors are more frequent when there is a language barrier between the nurse and the patient. Method: The study was made as a qualitative interview study with a phenomenological analysis. Aim: Describe how Malaysian nurses deal with language barriers during meetings with patients with another language. Result: To deliver good nursing care to patient with another language could be difficult depending on what strategies the nurses used: how nurses experience the effectiveness of non-verbal communication, how interpreters were used and who interpreted during the patient meeting, strategies nurses used when interpreter was not an option, nurses’ interest in learning about the patient’s culture. Conclusion: To overcome language barriers is complex and often more than one strategy is needed. Patient safety is compromised when there were language barriers between the nurse and the patient.

Abstract:
The Limited English Proficiency (LEP) population in the United States requires interpreters in order to receive appropriate medical care. However, interpreters are not used consistently in clinical encounters. This study aims to identify the barriers that interfere with providing this service, as well as to propose some possible ways of overcoming these barriers. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using Medline, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycINFO. Twenty articles that presented barriers to interpreter use were identified. These barriers referred to either professional interpreters or ad hoc interpreters, or were general barriers. The barriers to professional interpreter use most frequently identified related to cost. Most of the cost-related barrier citations were found in studies conducted in the U.S. The barriers to ad hoc interpreter use most frequently identified related to concern about the interpreters ability to interpret. I determined that appropriate provision of interpreters to the LEP community would require four elements: 1) The consistent use of professional interpreters, and the elimination of ad hoc interpreter use. 2) Research into the possible financial benefits that may arise from increased interpreter use, and how the cost of providing interpreters may be offset by the widespread benefits of using them. 3) Professionalization of interpreter services, with quality assurance and standardized training and evaluation of interpreters. 4) Increased education and training for patients and providers about the language services that are available and how to access them, and about how to work with an interpreter efficiently and effectively. One possible solution that would allow the implementation of all of the above elements is a national interpretation service.

Abstract:
Background: From a nursing perspective communication is an integral part of nursing. Nurses need to establish a positive nurse-patient relationship to ensure good nursing practice. Effective communication leads to higher patient satisfaction, higher patient participation and a better health outcome.  The communication between nurse and patient can be negatively impacted by communications barriers. The nurse’s role is to minimize the negative consequences of existing communication barriers by using methods best adapted for the specific situation. There is a need to identify the barriers for effective communication that nurses experience and methods to overcome these communication barriers.  Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how nurses experience the communication between patients and nurses while communication barriers exist as well as to investigate how nurses experience efforts to overcome communication barriers.  Method: Literature review with a descriptive design. The literature search encompassed three databases: Pubmed, Psycinfo and CINAHL. The results were based on ten original articles using a qualitative approach, published between 2012 and 2019.  Results: During the data analysis two themes were identified: Communication barriers and Measures and methods to overcome communication barriers. These two subject categories were subsequently divided into categories and/or sub-categories. This study has identified twelve communication barriers faced by nurses in their daily work and the nurse’s perceptions in this context. Five different categories relating to strategies and methods to overcome communication barriers, as perceived by the nurses, were identified.  Conclusion: This study provides knowledge and tools for nurses to counteract ineffective communication. Further research is recommended to further strengthen clinical practice.

Abstract:

Intercultural communication (ICC) is one of the most relevant fields for investigation in post-colonial Africa and post-apartheid South Africa, given the movements between people from African countries and the wide range of attractions, both economic and social, that South Africa holds for people from other African countries. This study reports on intercultural communication in post-democratic South Africa in an era marked by what Appadurai (1990) calls &lsquo
flows&rsquo
. Greenmarket Square in the heart of Cape Town, well known as a hub for informal traders, local people and tourists, was chosen as the site for this study, because of the rich cultural diversity of the role-players. The principal aim of this research is to examine how people from different cultural backgrounds in this particular space of Greenmarket Square communicate with one another, and where the &lsquo
intercultural fault-lines&rsquo
(Olahan, 2000) occur, keeping in mind how ICC could be improved in such a space. My position as a trader in the market placed me in an ideal &lsquo
insider&rsquo
position to do the research. The theory of spatiality (Vigouroux, 2005
Blommaert et al. 2005) was used to show how the space of Greenmarket Square affected intercultural communication. Discourse analysis was also applied to the data to show how the various roleplayers were socially constructed by others. Saville-Troike&rsquo
s (1989) ethnography of communicative events was also used to bring out other barriers that were not identified by spatiality and discourse analysis. Aspects like scene, key, message form and content, the observed rules for interaction and where these rules were broken and to what effect as well as the norms for interpretation were considered during the analysis of this qualitative data. The analysis showed that spatiality, social constructions of &lsquo
the other&rsquo
and other factors like nonverbal communication and differences between communicative styles in high and low context cultures (LCC/HCC), had a major impact on intercultural communication at Greenmarket Square, frequently leading to complete breakdowns in communication. Many of the traders interviewed acknowledged that they needed to improve their competence in intercultural communication. The study concludes with a number of recommendations on how people can become more &ldquo
interculturally competent&rdquo
(Katan, 2004) in a globalized world.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to discover what actions are necessary to mitigate these problems within textile companies. Theories on organisational culture, organisational learning, and international management, were addressed in relation to intercultural communication. Using an exemplifying case of one single person within Eton AB, a case study research design was conducted. The data was collected through a qualitative research strategy and method, using self-completion/self-administrative questionnaires, and analysed using grounded theory. The general result of the thesis indicates that few communication errors between Eton AB and the participant exist. Therefore this interrelation can be seen as a positive example of intercultural communication within a textile company. In this context, it was the authors’ intention to identify the influence organisational culture and organisational learning have on intercultural communication. Certain aspects within an organisational culture are of importance to create a better integration of employees, hence influence intercultural relations positively. Organisational learning, likewise, has a positive impact, since it contributes to the creation of a better environment for integration. This thesis concludes with generalised measures which can be seen as a guideline and as first steps for textile companies in order to reduce intercultural communication errors.

Abstract:
A review of the research related to Medical Family Therapy demonstrates that the inclusion of marriage and family therapists as part of the healthcare team offers benefits such as decreased utilization of healthcare, decreased costs, increased positive outcomes for patients and healthcare systems. However, studies demonstrate the difficulty with communication between providers limiting access to marriage and family therapists. Results of this study identified benefits to working with medical family therapists including broadening the understanding and using a collaborative effort to help the patient improve and get better. Participants also identified barriers to collaboration such as the lack of knowledge of and access to MedFTs, their inclusion in the system, MDs finding value in the MedFT profession, and that the communication process is lacking. Further need for improved communication at the referral and follow-up stages in collaborative practices is shown. In order to move more toward collaborative practices, PCPs and MedFTs need to develop and disseminate training on treatment notes, communication, team meetings, and continuance of collaborative work with one another.

Abstract:
Communication is central to palliative care. It unifies all nursing practice, and plays an integral role in the operationalization of palliative care. To deliver quality palliative care, it is paramount that nurses have adequate communication skills. Positive patient outcomes are derived when communication between the nurse and patient is effective. Ineffective communication may result in inaccurate information on treatment/medication increase patient risks and may cause patient dissatisfaction with care. It is therefore necessary to be familiar with the facilitators and barriers that influence communication. This study aimed to describe barriers and facilitators of effective communication between nurses and patients receiving palliative care. A literature review of fifteen articles was utilized to answer the study’s aim. Searching the CINAHL Complete and MEDLINE databases performed data collection. Data was analyzed using the matrix method. The findings were categorized into two main themes: barriers of effective communication and facilitators of effective communication. Three subthemes emerged under the barriers of effective communication and two sub themes for the facilitators. The main barrier to effective communication was the nurse’s lack of knowledge and skills. In conclusion, the nurse-patient interaction is compounded by variables such as: nurses’ competence, patient’s attributes and environmental or care setting. All together these factors require the nurse’s ability to overcome the communication barriers and highlight the facilitators. It would be of benefit if nurses receive training in communication skills in palliative care with emphasis on transitions and how to handle them within the palliative care scope.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design of a digital communication tool for caregiver-patient communication with language barriers. This is done through a case study at Worldish, a company that develops a digital communication tool named Helen. An iterative service design approach is used in the case study to understand enablers and complicators for usage of a digital communication tool in care consultations with language barriers. Also, for investigating how the design of such tool better can be adapted to fit the service process of a care consultation. The case study is divided into phases where the first two, phase A and B, investigates the care consultation process with and without language barriers as well as how a digital communication tool is used in this process. These phases results in several insights about what in the care consultation process with language barriers that enable and complicates the usage of a digital communication tool. In total, this thesis identifies four enabling factors and six complicating factors for usage of a digital communication tool in the care consultation process. In the third and fourth phase, phase C and D, two design-iterations are conducted where design ideas are ideated, prototyped and tested with users. These phases results in design features and insights connected to how the design of a digital communication tool can better be adapted to the service process. In total this thesis identifies six guidelines that serves as inspiration for someone who wants to create or adapt the design of a digital communication tool to the service process in a care consultation with language barriers.

Abstract:
Despite the recent attention to the LGBT community in the mainstream media as well as psychological research, few resources have been channeled toward the “T” in this acronym. The trans community, and gender diversity in general, have been an afterthought in research claiming to study gender and sexuality. Research on sexual minorities has been assumed to capture the experiences of this population, despite its quite distinct needs and experiences, as well as alarmingly high rates of violence and suicide. This project is a qualitative analysis of the processes and strategies trans and gender non-conforming individuals use to communicate their identity to others, and how they address barriers they face in their everyday lives. Participation was open to all trans or gender non-conforming individuals. Five individuals who identified as trans or genderqueer volunteered to participate in individual semi-structured interviews about their experiences in communicating their gender identity to others. All participants were White university students at a local mid-sized university in a rural Midwestern setting. Interviews were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), using the process outlined by Smith and Osborn (2008). Six themes in total were pulled from the data: (1) Gender identity, (2) Barriers to communication, (3) Strategic responses, (4) Individual impacts, (5) Community politics, and (6) Coping. These results emphasized the complexity and irreducibility of trans individuals’ daily lives, demonstrating simultaneously the tremendous harm of transphobic discrimination and the strength and insight of these individuals into their own experiences. Findings supported the use of the Minority Stress Model (Meyer, 1995) in the trans population and further underscored the need for continued research on all trans individuals’ experiences, especially those who identify as non-binary, trans people of color, and trans women.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of small group communication, investigate to what extent small groups communicate within their minibusiness areas within a mining group. The communication role and the influence it has within an organisation, and what structure it takes within the bigger scheme of the organization were also investigated. Many people and organisations form small groups to perform certain jobs, but they do not have a clear understanding of what constitutes a group, essentially what is it that a group can and cannot do. Small groups are always present and employees are always members of one or more small groups. Establishing a precise definition of a small group that is generally accepted by everyone has proven to be a challenge as most scholars come up with different interpretations and definitions of small group communication. A quantitative research method was used for this study as it was deemed suitable for this type of research, but one of the shortcomings of this method is that the data obtained through this method of research is not suitable for generalisations to any population. It is therefore emphasized that it is not the objective of this research to generalise the results of the study, but that it is applicable to the small group communication within the mining group investigated. The sample and data collected were small. A total of 150 questionnaires were sent to two De Beers' mines, Venetia Mine in Limpopo Province and Voorspoed Mine in the Free State Province, requesting employees via their supervisors and line managers to participate in the small group communications survey. The survey revolved mainly around the company's overview of its Continuous Business Improvement (CBI) business system which involved small group initiatives and communication.

Further, the aim was to explore oncologists’ perceived barriers against psychosocial communication in out-patient consultations. Finally, the aim was to evaluate different methods for evaluating communication in this setting. Routine oncology out-patient consultations from two different hospitals were audio-recorded. After the consultations, patients and oncologists perceptions of the content and quality of the communication were assessed using a self-report questionnaire. A nation-wide survey was performed to assess oncologists’ perceived barriers against psychosocial communication. Finally, the audio-recorded consultations were used for evaluating inter-rater reliability and feasibility of two different communication analysis instruments. Patient-physician consultations in oncology care are focused on the physical aspects of disease and treatment, both in terms of how often these issues were discussed and in terms of the amount of time spent on discussing them. Psychosocial issues, such as the disease’s effects on patients’ emotional or social functioning, are not always discussed during consultations, and the time spent on such discussions is limited. When psychosocial issues are discussed during the medical consultations, they are most often patient-initiated. Reasons for why psychosocial aspects are seldom discussed during the medical consultations can be the barriers concerning this kind of communication perceived by a large majority (93%) of the oncologists. Barriers against psychosocial communication were identified at organizational levels (including guidelines, routines, and resources) and individual levels (including physicians’ knowledge and attitudes). Furthermore, this thesis shows that there are methods with high feasibility and reliability for evaluating the content of patient-physician communication, in large study samples in oncology care. The method (observation/self-report) and perspective (patient, physician, and observer) used when evaluating communication affects the results. This needs to be considered when choosing evaluation methods in intervention studies. There are reasons to continue to evaluate, promote and implement promising ways of achieving better communication in clinical practice. Research should focus on how to overcome barriers against psychosocial communication.

Abstract:
In times of rapid economic development and internationalization of business, effective cross-cultural communication among managers remains a challenge. This thesis aims to research and analyze cross-cultural communication in business context based on qualitative case study of a small Swedish company and its international business partners. Previous research has focused on differences and similarities in people’s behaviour and ways of communication based on their cultural background. Through in-depth analysis and application of existing theories to the chosen case study company, the findings of this research demonstrated that although national culture does have an undeniable influence on people’s behaviour and their communication style, implications in communication between business partners of different cultural backgrounds often connected to an individual approach to cross-cultural communication. A great emphasis was placed on the language being one of the biggest communication challenges facing SMEs in international arena. Finally, misunderstandings occurring due to communication through technological devices were discussed.

Abstract:
Background: Communication is fundamental for the approach of nursing to work properly. If communication fails and causes an incorrect transfer of information, not only is patient safety at risk but also that wrong care is given due to misinterpretations. With the development of society and increasing global migration, there is a continuous change in the conditions for health care. Changed conditions mean that high skills are required of the nurse. The nurse should possess knowledge to identify how cultural factors can affect the experiences and expectations of care and treatment as well as be aware of how their way of communicating is influenced and perceived by patients. Aim: The aim was to illuminate the encountering between healthcare professionals and patients in communication barriers from a transcultural perspective. Method/Design: A general literature review. Results/Conclusion: Communication barriers in nursing consists mainly of linguistic- and cultural barriers. Cultural awareness and cultural competence of the nurse increased the conditions for addressing the communication barriers. The use of an interpreter was presented as a positive and a negative resource when language barriers appeared, since it was found to be complex to use out of many aspects. With person-centered care, the nurse can overcome communication barriers as it promotes the individuality and participation of the patient.

Abstract:
Black women mortality rates are perceived to be impacted by communication barriers, trust issues, and the lack of quality preventive health services. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore communication barriers and trust issues perceived by Black women when seeking preventive health services. HMB was used to identify public attitudes around receiving preventive health services and to construct each question based on perceived susceptibility and perceived severity of communication barriers and trust issues. An ecological model of the communication process was used as a framework to identify fundamental relationships between the Black female patients and health care providers. Data were collected using open-ended interview questions from Black women in public health and health care professions in southeast Texas (N=10). Results were coded and evaluated by thematic analysis. NVivo 10 software was used to store and manage data. Study findings showed 4 participants voiced their beliefs that their healthcare provider was somewhat apathetic when it came to addressing their health care needs, and 3 of the participants who visited a doctor's office within the last 12 months reportedly expressed having poor communication and trust issues with their health care provider. Emerged themes included lack of attentiveness from health care providers and lack of a comfortable atmosphere or bedside manner when receiving preventive health care services from their healthcare provider. This research has implications for social change if the health inequalities of Black women are identified and addressed, then Black women may have a reduction in health disparities when receiving preventive health services and an increase healthier outcomes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the globalized economy, internationalization is necessary for companies to have a  competitive advantage to survive in the long term and Swedish companies are no exception. However, when Swedish companies enter Japan the cultural differences between the two countries are significant, which may create cultural barriers. There are few cross-cultural studies focusing on communication across cultural barriers that foreign companies face when entering the Japanese market. Also, the research is conducted from a one-way perspective, with less focus on the perspective of the Japanese counterparts. The purpose of this thesis is to identify what cultural barriers a company, with Sweden as the home country, has encountered under the internationalization process when entering Japan from both a Swedish and Japanese point of view. In the qualitative research approach, the empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews with the employees in a Swedish company HMS Networks AB (HMS), which has internationalized to Japan and has a subsidiary HMS Industrial Networks K.K. in Japan (HMS Japan). These findings were also complemented with secondary data such as corporate websites and annual reports. The empirical data were analyzed into three steps: transcription, systematization, and combination. The results showed that HMS has faced internal and external cultural barriers during the internationalization of the Japanese market. The differences in work culture, language, business relationship created cultural barriers and influenced the communication within and outside of the company. There were more internal cultural barriers than external ones, which has decreased over time, resulting from Japanese society becoming more international and Swedish companies adapting appropriately to Japanese culture. This research thesis will be a tool for creating a deeper understanding and communication of two different cultures. First, language is the most significant cultural barrier to entering foreign markets. Therefore, it is crucial that the company itself provides an opportunity to learn a  language for employees. Second, it demonstrates the importance of deepening the understanding between the parties. International companies should not try to change foreign employees’ way of being but instead consider both cultures and implement a common foundation. Third, it is essential to keep in mind that it takes time to overcome cultural barriers.  Also, when a company internationalizes, cultural barriers may occur from both sides of countries, and they may be interpreted differently in the same situation. Thus, understanding how the other party interprets your culture is important, which will help to reduce cultural barriers.
