Abstract:
The genera Boonea Robertson, 1978, Chrysallida Carpenter, 1856, Fargoa Bartsch, 1909, Ivara Dall & Bartsch, 1903, Mumiola A. Adams, 1863, Odostomella Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus, 1883, Parthenina Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus, 1883 and Trabecula Dall & Bartsch, 1909 from Brazil are reviewed. Boonea jadisi (Olsson & McGinty, 1958), Boonea seminuda (C. B. Adams, 1839), Chrysallida gemmulosa C. B. Adams, 1850, Ivara terryi (Olsson & McGinty, 1958), Fargoa bushiana Bartsch, 1909, Mumiola gradatula (Mörch, 1876) and Odostomella carceralis Pimenta, Absalão & Alencar, 2000 are confirmed to occur in Brazil. We also present the first records of Parthenina varia (Odé, 1993), Odostomella fonteini (Jong & Coomans, 1988) and Trabecula krumpermanni (Jong & Coomans, 1988) from the region, all, new combinations. Two species, previously reported from the Brazilian coast, could not be confirmed: Boonea bisuturalis (Say, 1822) and Boonea impressa (Say, 1822). Odostomella cf. doliolum (Philippi, 1844) and Parthenina cf. interspatiosa (Linden & Eikenboom, 1992), originally described from the eastern Atlantic, are here recorded from Brazil, although their status remains dubious because of lack of information on their biology and due to lack of morphological and molecular data. One new species is described: Boonea scymnocelata, which can be distinguished from the similar species B. seminuda by its smaller size and immersed protoconch, with no visible nucleus.

Abstract:
This paper clarifies the confusion relating to the publication of Carlos de la Torre & Paul Bartsch’s taxonomic study of theCuban Urocoptidae. This massive work, which described >500 new taxa, was completed in manuscript form in 1943, butwas not published during the authors’ lifetime. In 1972 Miguel Jaume and Alfredo de la Torre (a nephew of C. de la Torre)published a slightly modified version of a large portion of this manuscript in the Circulares del Museo y Biblioteca deZoología de la Habana, a mimeographed journal which is available for taxonomic purposes per ICZN Code Article 8. The420 new taxa introduced in this paper were made available under the ICZN Code (even though many were differentiatedonly in identification keys) and should be attributed to C. de la Torre & Bartsch because the descriptions were copied fromthe 1943 manuscript and Jaume & A. de la Torre explicitly credited this work to the former two authors (per Article 50 ofthe 1964 edition of the ICZN Code). The 1972 paper does not delineate type material for most of the new species-grouptaxa; however the detailed information provided in the 1943 manuscript constitutes valid evidence of the type series perICZN Code (1999) Article 72.2. The 1972 paper was republished by Jaume & A. de la Torre in 1976 in the Ciencias Bi-ológicas of the Universidad de la Habana. In 1980 Jaume & A. de la Torre prepared a typescript describing the remainingnew taxa from the 1943 manuscript, which was slated to be published in the Circulares; however we have not found anyevidence that it was distributed or otherwise made available in a manner satisfying the ICZN Code criteria for availability. In 2008 Carolina de la Torre, grand-niece of C. de la Torre, published the entire 1943 manuscript in a book of more than760 pages that was printed in Havana. The authorship of this book was credited to C. de la Torre & Bartsch. The bookdescribes as new the taxa already treated in the 1972 paper as well as 130 additional taxa, which also should be attributedto C. de la Torre & Bartsch. We briefly discuss the disposition of the Cuban urocoptid material studied by C. de la Torre & Bartsch and the subsequent citations to their taxonomic study of this fauna.

Abstract:
Curtitoma nodulosa (Krause, 1885) comb. nov. Curtitoma nodulosa (Krause, 1885) comb. nov., a rare species that was found only in the bays of the Chukotka Peninsula. Firstly it was described as Bela violacea var. nodulosa Krause, 1885, secondly – as Lora inequita Dall, 1919. It differs from Curtitoma violacea (Mighels et Adams, 1842) by the presence of well-defined axial folds, nodes on the keels, and a dagger-like type of radular teeth. From other members of genus Curtitoma Bartsch, 1941 it differs by the presence of keels. The specimens of «Oenopota inequita Dall, 1919» from the Sea of Japan [Bogdanov, 1990] belong to another species of genus Obesotoma Bartsch, 1941. It is proposed to consider Curtitoma nodulosa as a valid name, and Lora inequita as its junior synonym. Key words: Curtitoma nodulosa (Krause, 1885), Mangeliidae, Bering Sea, synonymy, re-description.

Abstract:
In 2003, a study was conducted to analyze brain-related fatalities in American football. From 1945–1999 a total of 497 fatalities were brain injury-related. Majority of the injuries, 61%, occurred during the football game, and “75% of these were high school players.” The number of high school students was more than 13 times greater than the number of college and professional players combined [1]. While millions of high school students will never make it to the next lever; collegiate and professional players have brought the attention needed to the make advances in the field of helmet design. Further, a study conducted by Bartsch et al. showed that the 20 th and 21 st century football helmet and the “leatherhead” helmets are very similar in their concussion-resistant and shock-mitigating capabilities [2]. In the past few decades, improvements in the helmet design have not addressed shock wave mitigation but rather focused on the strength, durability, and “looks” of the helmet. A major issue stems from the lack of thorough knowledge of the biomechanics and physics of traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to helmet-to-helmet contacts. The current study proposes to an in-depth finite element analysis (FEA) of the helmet-to-helmet collision. The finite element (FE) model consists of a human head clad with helmet with simulations being performed using ABAQUS/Explicit [3]. Here, Helmet-to-helmet impacts will be analyzed to develop a new head injury metric that captures the locational and history effects of the impending shock wave due to collision.

Full text
Abstract:
The static and dynamic stall behavior of the supercritical NLR 7301 airfoil is analyzed with a 2D thin-layer Navier-Stokes code. The code solves the compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an upwind biased numerical scheme in combination with the Baldwin-Lomax or the Baldwin-Barth turbulence models. The effect of boundary layer transition is incorporated using the transition length model of Gostelow et al. The transition onset location is determined with Michel’s formula or it can be specified as an input parameter. The two turbulence models yield significantly different steady-state lift coefficients at incidences greater than 8 degrees. Also, the lift hysteresis loops are strongly affected by the choice of the turbulence model. The use of the one-equation Baldwin-Barth model together with the Gostelow transition model is found to give substantially better agreement with the experimental data of McCroskey et al. than the Baldwin-Lomax model.

Abstract:
This paper presents a modified version of the Baldwin-Barth (BB) turbulence model. This modification accounts for the asymptotic boundary value of the pseudo eddy viscosity as the wall is approached. The BB Model tends to respond strongly to an adverse pressure gradient, in the sense that it always predicts a large decrease in skin friction relative to the measured values. Hence, in the present work, the importance of the modifications for improving the skin friction prediction of flows with adverse pressure gradient is addressed. All of the implemented modifications are free of wall functions and coordinate independent, which renders the model advantageous relative to other wall dependent models. The results are compared with both the original BB and the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) models. The accuracy of these and the present model is assessed against experimental data for transonic flows over NACA-0012 and RAE 2822 airfoils. In general, good agreement with experiments is indicated.

The performance and cavitation characteristics of marine propellers and hydrofoils are strongly affected by tip vortex behavior. A number of previous computational studies have been done on tip vortices, both in aerodynamic and marine applications. The focus, however, has primarily been on validating methods for prediction and advancing the understanding of tip-vortex formation in general, rather than showing effects of tip modifications on tip vortices. Studies of the most relevance to the current work include computational studies by Dacles-Mariani et al. (1995) and Hsiao and Pauley (1998, 1999). Daeles-Mariani et al. carried out interactively a computational and experimental study of the wingtip vortex in the near field using a full Navier-Stokes simulation, accompanied with the Baldwin-Barth turbulence model. Although they showed improvement over numerical results obtained by previous researchers, the tip vortex strength was underpredicted. Hsiao and Pauley (1998) studied the steady-state tip vortex flow over a finite-span hydrofoil, also using the Baldwin-Barth turbulence model. They were able to achieve good agreement in pressure distribution and oil flow pattern with experimental data and accurately predict vertical and axial velocities of the tip vortex core within the near-field region. Far downstream, however, the computed flow field was overly diffused within the tip vortex core. Hsiao and Pauley (1999) also carried out a computational study of the tip vortex flow generated by a marine propeller. The general characteristics of the flow were well predicted but the vortex core was again overly diffused.
